Harley-Davidson Named Presenting Sponsor for 2012 Hall of Fame Legend Mert Lawwill

Harley-Davidson is presenting sponsor of AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Legends recognition for Mert Lawwill

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- October 31, 2012 -- Harley-Davidson, whose motorcycles helped write the history of American dirt-track racing, will be the presenting sponsor of the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame's Legends recognition for Mert Lawwill. Lawwill, a 1998 inductee, will be honored at the annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Friday, Nov. 16, at the Red Rock Casino, Resort & Spa in Las Vegas, Nev.

Each year during the induction ceremony for the new class of the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, existing members of the Hall of Fame are recognized as Legends. The 2012 AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Legends are Lawwill, the 1969 AMA Grand National Champion, and 1998 inductee Malcolm Smith, a pioneer in off-road motorcycling. Both Lawwill and Smith starred in the timeless motorcycling documentary "On Any Sunday." The pair will be introduced on stage by the director of that movie -- and a Hall of Famer himself -- Bruce Brown.

"The iconic images of motorcycling seen in 'On Any Sunday' were instrumental in bringing generations of new riders into the sport and continue to resonate with riders today," said Scott Miller, Harley-Davidson Vice-President of Parts, Accessories and Customization and an AMA board member. "Mert Lawwill is truly one of the great legends of Harley-Davidson and AMA racing, and we could not be more proud to support this event that recognizes the immense impact that he and Malcolm Smith have had on the history of motorcycle racing through their achievements on and off the track."

In addition, the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, presented by KTM, will officially welcome the class of 2012: the late Rod Bush, KTM North America president and industry visionary; world championship roadracing tuner Nobby Clark; off-road racing champion Ty Davis; 1975 AMA Supercross Champion Jimmy Ellis; pioneering female motocrosser Sue Fish; world-class bike restorer Brian Slark; and the late iconic race starter Al Wilcox.

"Harley-Davidson is synonymous with Grand National Championship racing, and having the Motor Company be a part of this amazing event where we will honor one of the sport's most cherished champions, is a true pleasure," said Jeffrey V. Heininger, chairman of the American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation, which oversees the Hall of Fame. "Mert Lawwill is an inspiration, and we're looking forward to recognizing him, Malcolm and the new class of the Hall of Fame this Nov. 16."

The 2012 AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, presented by KTM, is part of AMA Legends Weekend. The event also includes one of the country's leading motorcycle shows and the finale of one of the most thrilling AMA-sanctioned national racing series. On Saturday, Nov. 17, the Red Rock will host the 2012 AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Dave Mungenast Memorial Concours d'Elegance, featuring many of the country's most impressive original and restored classic motorcycles. That evening, at the nearby Orleans Arena, fans can catch the last round of the 2012 GEICO AMA EnduroCross National Championship Series.

AMA Flat Track: Winter Break & Bad Weather Getting You Down? Read All About The Season-Finale Pomona Half-Mile Round 16 to Get You Through the Hurricane Sandy Aftermath

Riders get ready to roll out for the final qualifying session at round 10 of the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season at the Lucas Oil Indy Mile on August 18 and three of the four main protagonists in the final fight for the brass ring that is the 2012 AMA Grand National Championship are ready to hit the track.

Jake Johnson, the 2-Time and defending AMA Grand National Champion, would lead the National main event at Indy early before crashing out just past the mid-point of the 25-lap final, and would leave the Indiana State Fair event down in the points with a deficit that not even the come-from-behind specialist was able to surpass this year.  In spite of his record of coming from behind in the last two seasons to take the title, first from Joe Kopp in the 2010 season and then from Jared Mees in the 2011 season, Johnson and his #1 Zanotti Racing/Schaeffer's H-D/Boughner Racing Suspension/Arai-sponsored XR750 weren't able to recover again at the end of the 2012 season.

After coming through the semi to make the main, and thusly missing valuable points for not making the Dash at Pomona, Johnson soldiered home to a 14th-place finish in the final round to end the season in the 3rd-place spot in the overall championship to his friend and rival, Jared Mees.  Jake and the Zanotti team are expected back together for the 2013 season and will no doubt be as tough as ever as they work to get the #1 plate back on what will be the #5 again for the 2013 season.  And although it is strictly a rumor at this point, there has been buzz throughout flat track nation that one Dave Zanotti, the great man behind this great effort, has even spoken of putting together a Kawasaki for the mile events for next year.  Say it ain't so, Joe.......

Mees, who more or less controlled the championship hunt from the mid-point of the season, would leave Indy with another podium (3rd-place) and would suffer his only downfall of the year at the next round at Knoxville (18th-place) but would hold on through the rest of the season to bring it home in the 8th-place spot at Pomona to capture the 2012 AMA Grand National Championship that he had been so wanting to claim for years now.

The rider of the #9 Rogers Racing/Blue Springs H-D/Saddlemen/National Cycle-backed XR added to his '09 and '11 Twins Series and '12 Singles Series Championships by taking the big marbles that he has been shooting for since being named Rookie of the Year in the 2004 season.

With the announcement last week of long-time tuner Brent Armbruster leaving the team to join the Lloyd Brothers Motorsports team and former multi-time championship winning tuner Kenny Tolbert coming back to the track to turn the wrenches for the Rogers Racing rider in 2013, the upcoming season should see some interesting combinations moving forward.

According to Mees at the Springfield doubleheader round in mid-September, he stated that there could be a distinct possibility that he may have to mount-up a new ride on the mile tracks in order to stay competitive with the Kawasakis that have hit the scene of late.  After asking master builder Rick Howerton if he was interested in putting something together for him (half in jest and half serious), Howerton stated he was much too busy to be able to spread himself that thin and still run his IndyCar/NHRA/NASCAR fabrication business on Indy's west side and still keep his Eaken-powered Kawi in the hunt for rider Bryan Smith.

This begs the question, will KT be rolling out his mean green Kawasaki armada (that was last seen at the Springfield Mile I round in late May with then-rider Brad Baker before being mothballed for the remainder of the season due to lack of sponsorship) for next season to help keep The Jammer in the front at the big tracks, or will the wrench spinning on Rogers Racing XRs' by the former H-D factory mechanic be enough to keep them in contention?  If anyone can keep an XR finely tuned, it is KT, but at what cost will the fragility and expense of the long-in-the-tooth Milwaukee iron (or alloy, as it would be) be able to remain competitive, and not just on the mile ovals?  Time will tell.

Bryan Smith announced way back in early April that he would be joining a new 'rookie' team based out of Indianapolis and headed-up by one Mr. Howerton, and would be saddling up on the #42 Crosley Radio/Howerton Motorsports powered by Eaken Racing/MPH/Dreyer Motorsports-sponsored Kawasaki parallel twins for the five mile events in the 2012 season.  Looking back, that rookie team with that veteran rider (and mile specialist, to boot!) had taken the series by storm by winning two events, taking home two 3rd-place finishes and a 14th-place at Indy (that could have resulted in a much higher finish if not for one errant battery-failure issue).

And then they did the unthinkable, and entered their rocket Kawi in the season-ending round at the Pomona Half-Mile, announcing just shy of two weeks before the finale that they would be making it one more go around in order to help Flyin' Bryan capture the ceremonial Twins Series Championship.

Looking back, it was a pretty good move on all parts as Smith took 3rd-place at Pomona in the team's first half-mile event together and in the process claimed the 2012 AMA Grand National Twins Series Championship and a fine 4th-place overall in the overall standings, behind Mees, Sammy Halbert and Johnson.

With new rules expected to come into place to help quiet the naysayers (and those not-in-the-know) in terms of possible restrictor sizes being discussed and minimum weight limits being set (almost a given) for everyone running the Twins Series events, the little team that could AND did will have their work cut-out for them.  But ask their fearless leader if he's worried and he gives you one of those looks that make you rethink whether you are crazy or not (of which I am, of course) and states that they have 'more in the tank' and that their bike isn't 'nearly as light as it looks' and they will just adjust accordingly.  If you think he's kidding, you don't know the competitive spirit of Rocket Rick and his team of long-time flat track fans and aficionados.

After winning his semi at round 5 of the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season at the Lima Half-Mile (shown above rolling onto the podium on June 30 after taking that semi win), less then an hour later 3-Time AMA Grand National Twins Champion Kenny Coolbeth was down and out after hitting a track marker on the first lap of the 25-lap National main at the Allen County Fairgrounds event.

Forced to sit out the next few rounds while recuperating from a broken left leg, Coolbeth and the #2 Screamin' Eagle/Harley-Davidson Motor Co/Fox/Arai Helmets-sponsored factory XR750 team came roaring back for a season-ending run that would leave young men gasping for air, let alone a long-time veteran of the sport.  Looking like he had hardly broken a sweat, The King of Cool took the season-finale win at Pomona to put a stamp on a season of what if's for the long tenured veteran of the sport, after also having won the Knoxville Half-Mile just over five weeks earlier.

Coolbeth sandwiched those wins with finishes of 6th-place (Springfield Mile II), 8th-place (Santa Rosa Mile) and 11th-place (Tucson Half-Mile) to take the 7th-place spot in the final overall standings and let everyone know that he isn't done yet, by any means, and will no doubt be back for the 2013 season with a big head of steam under his seat ready to take on the pack again.

Sammy Halbert rolls onto the podium at round 5 of the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season after taking the win over rival Henry Wiles at the Lima Half-Mile after a hard-fought 25-lap National main that was interrupted by a red-flag delay that saw the final five laps worthy of the paying house on hand.

Halbert and his #7 South East H-D/The South Ass/Mo Vaughn Transport/LZ Racing-backed XR had another great run for the championship during the 2012 season, winning a series' leading four rounds and finally taking the dirt track 'grand slam' after taking his initial mile event win at Indy back in August.

But like with all events and racing championships, the fat lady did not hit a good note for Slammin' Sammy as a clutch failure at the season-finale relegated him to an unlucky 13th-place finish at Pomona and the series' runner-up spot in the overall championship.

No doubt the Washington State resident will be back for the 2013 season and will be as tough as ever, and maybe even gazing at everyone with that determined but anguished stare that seemed to be ever-present throughout the 2012 season.  One thing for sure, you know he'll be at the front fighting it out to try and add to his '11 Singles Series Championship by finally nailing down the big brass ring that is the AMA Grand National Championship in The Rolling Thunder Show.

AMA Flat Track: Lloyd Brothers Motorsports Announces Signing of New Crew Chief Brent Armbruster for 2013 AMA Grand National Twins Series Championship Season

The Lloyd Brothers Motorsports team has announced that AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship-winning tuner and crew chief Brent Armbruster will be joining their team effective immediately for the upcoming 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season for the series' and team's Twins Series Championship assault.

A long-time member of the AMA Pro Flat Track fraternity hailing from the Clio, MI. area, tuner and master wrench spinner Armbruster had been involved with the Rogers Racing team that led 2012 AMA Grand National Champion Jared Mees to the title this past season.  Armbruster also tuned the machine that took Mees to his first win at Springfield in May '11 and to five wins during the 2011 season, and has been involved with flat track racing for several decades now.

Speaking with team co-owner Dave Lloyd this morning, Lloyd noted the great effort that has been put in by departing crew chief, Dave Gamble, over the course of the last few seasons.  "Dave has done a great job in heading up our efforts over the course of the last few seasons, and we wish him the very best in his endeavors going forward.  We're looking forward to a new chapter in our history with Brent coming on board, as Mike and I have known him since around 1987 when we were novices getting started in the sport."

After losing three engines this year and missing the set-up and the Nationals at two rounds this season (Hagerstown and Knoxville), the team still pulled out three top-10s (Santa Rosa 6th-place, Tucson 8th-place, Pomona 7th-place) and two top-5 results (Lima 2nd-place, Indy 4th-place) for their hard-earned efforts, and are looking to improve dramatically on the season as a whole.

In the shot above the team is shown getting ready for the first practice session of the Twins Series season at round 5 of the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season at the Springfield Mile I event on May 27.

As rider Henry Wiles gets ready to head out for practice on the team's #17 LBM/Foremost Insurance Group/Ramspur Winery/Motorcyclist Magazine-sponsored Italian 'L' twin, he can be seen on the right talking with Dave Gamble and Dave Lloyd, while brother and co-owner Mike Lloyd can be seen talking with 2000 AMA Grand National Champion Joe Kopp (far left, seated).  Kopp was the team's rider during the 2010 season which saw him get them their first-ever win in the series on the team's potent Ducati 'L' twin mount at the Arizona Mile I round in Prescott in May '10.

Brent Armbruster is shown with Jared Mees and the #9 Rogers Racing/Blue Springs H-D/Saddlemen/National Cycle-backed XR750 just before the riders hit the track for the Dash for Cash event at the Springfield Mile I round on May 27, 2012.  2-Time AMA Grand National Champion Jake Johnson is shown ready for battle on the #1 Zanotti Racing XR just beside Armbruster.

According to team co-owner Dave Lloyd, Armbruster will be taking possession of the team's big red twins and doing all of the prep-work at his home in Michigan and then transporting the team's rig and bikes to each event for the 2013 season, which should free-up more time for the LBM brothers to concentrate on the daily runnings of the team and dealing with sponsors, "and should help travel to-and-from each event for Brent and Henry" noted Dave Lloyd, since they both live close to one another.

Michiganite Armbruster should be a great addition to the team for the coming year and his vast knowledge of bike prep and turning wrenches will be another plus for the team.  Under Armbruster-prepped mounts, Mees only suffered from a small handful of mechanical failures in the last few seasons, which finally translated into a Grand National Championship this year for the fellow-Michigan resident and Rogers Racing team.

Team co-owners Mike (left) and Dave Lloyd (right) help crew chief Dave Gamble finish with some final settings on the #17 Foremost Insurance/Ramspur Winery/ENI USA/Motorcyclist Magazine-sponsored Ducati just prior to the running of round 5 of the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season at the Illinois State Fairgrounds mile oval.  The team suffered it's first engine loss at the first Twins Series event at Springfield, and put them in the hole right from the start of the year.  With Armbruster coming in to help out immediately going forward, this should help in terms of freeing up time for the Lloyds to concentrate on sponsorship and team operations.

"We're further ahead today then we were at this time last year in getting sponsorship situated for next year," commented Dave this morning from his new home just outside of the Evansville, IN. area, "and we have a lot of the same folks coming back as we move into the new season, and Ramspur Winery is stepping up their involvement for 2013, while Foremost Insurance will also be involved again as they were this year and the last few seasons with the team.

"You're never done with bringing in sponsorship in racing, but we're looking forward to the new season with a new fresh face in the team to help us reach our goal of winning another Twins Series event," continued Lloyd.  "Brent and I have known one another for almost three decades and are looking forward to working together moving forward."

This is great news for one of the hardest working and most professional looking and run teams in The Rolling Thunder Show, and helps to guarantee that they will be back again for the 2013 season to again battle it out with the other greats in the best racing series on wheels in the world.

Congrats to the LBM crew and to Brent Armbruster for this great news and we can't wait until the first Twins Series event of the 2013 season to see them all in action together!

Hello Race Fans,

I am pleased to announce, The Complete Grand National Championship Volume II 1970-1975 is finally finished!  The new 562 page book details the explosion in popularity of GNC racing in the first half of the 1970’s. This was truly at the peak of the “Golden Era” of American motorcycle racing.  Factory involvement was at it’s highest and the best riders competed on dirt tracks and road courses from coast to coast.

Over two years in the making, the book has been painstakingly researched and covers each race and championship.  It is packed with neat trivia and nearly 200 photographs, many never before published. Other highlights include a foreword by two-time Grand National Champion Dick Mann and a tribute to road race legend Cal Rayborn from his close friend, Jim McMurren.

Like The Complete GNC Volume I, the detailed account fills in the gaps and tells the whole story of this exciting era for the first time.

AMA Flat Track: Lloyd Brothers Motorsports Team Raises $10.2K for Air Fence Fund in 2012 Buell Raffle Sales

Round 4 of the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.coms season gets ready to roll into action as the first Twins Series event of the year is set to hit the track at the Springfield Mile I on May 27.  2-Time AMA Pro Flat Track Singles Champion Henry Wiles slips on his gloves as he prepares to take the #17 Lloyd Brothers Motorsports/Foremost Insurance Group/Ramspur Winery/Motorcyclist Magazine-sponsored Italian 'L' twin out for the day's first practice session as team co-owner Mike Lloyd looks on while brother Dave fires up the big red machine.

In their second year of partnering with AMA Pro Racing, the Ohio-based team again put on a raffle this season to help gather funds for the flat track Air Fence Fund.  The prize this year was another 2009 Buell XB12 simliar to the machine that was raffled off last season, both of which were used during the '09 AMA Pro Road Racing seasons as pace bikes.  Along with Saddlemen, Arai, and a host of other great sponsors and people, the team added to the $11.5K raised last season by bringing in just over $10.2K this year in ticket sales, which is the fourth largest donation overall to the dirt track side of the air fence fund to go along with last season's third-largest donation.

The RoadRacing World Air Fence Fund is THE single best way that anyone can get involved by helping to support the series, and most importantly the safety of the riders in the series.  An impact-absorbing 'air pillow' that lines the track and helps to protect the riders from immoveable objects, this safety device is probably the single-biggest innovation in safety in high-speed motorcycle racing in the last few decades.

Transported from race-to-race and maintained by the great folks on the AMA Pro Flat Track Blue Crew, sections of this great life saver eventually wear out and have to be replaced, and that is where these last two seasons' of raffle tickets sold have been so helpful and so needed, in order to maintain the high level of safety needed at each and every event on the schedule.

A big thanks go out to the LBM team for their undying efforts to help maintain and add to the sanctity of this great life saving effort, for their time in transporting the bikes the last two seasons to each of the Twins Series events on the schedule, to getting the tickets made up and sold at each of those events, and for doing such a top-notch job of displaying not only their wares in the sport, but for doing so with the Buell display at each event for the fans to check out.

While some of the fans check out the '09 Buell XR12R on display (background left) at round 5 of the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season, Lloyd Brothers Motorsports co-owner Mike Lloyd sells another raffle ticket to another great fan of the sport for the 2012 Air Fence Fund Buell raffle at the Lima Half-Mile on June 30.  Brother Dave looks after the funds just behind him during the fan walk held at the Allen County Fairgrounds event.

The LBM team and rider Henry Wiles helped contribute to the RoadRacing World Air Fence Fund again this season and added to the donations raised for the dirt track donation list, with the help of AMA Pro Racing, Saddlemen, Mr. Sign and Army Armstrong.

William Jones of Ramsey, N.J. won the grand prize Buell that was announced at the season-finale at Pomona on October 13, and Bob Morris of Wheeler, MI. won the Saddlemen runner-up prize for their worthy ticket purchases this season.  Congrats to you both!

And again, a big thanks to the super efforts of Mike, Dave, Henry, crew chief Dave Gamble and the rest of the great people involved with the Lloyd Brothers Motorsports team for taking the time to go the extra distance in helping to keep the riders safe, and a tip of the helmet as well goes to AMA Pro Racing for donating the Buells the last two season to be raffled off for the Air Fence Fund.

You can check out the official press release below from the LBM team.

AMA Flat Track: Coolbeth Wins Pomona Half-Mile Season-Finale, Bryan Smith Grabs Twins Series Championship, Mees Takes '12 AMA Grand National Championship

Jared Mees pulled out what very few people had doubted would happen last night in taking the #9 Rogers Racing/Blue-Springs H-D/Saddlemen/National Cycle-sponsored XR750 to an 8th-place finish at the season-finale in Pomona to claim the 2012 AMA Grand National Championship.  After claiming the ceremonial Singles Championship just over four weeks ago at the Springfield Short Track, Mees added to his legend by taking the overall championship over title rivals Sammy Halbert (13th-place finish at Pomona) and Jake Johnson (14th).

Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. won the battle after running away with round 16 of the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season on the #2 Screamin' Eagle/Harley-Davidson Insurance Co/Fox/Arai Helmets-backed factory XR750, leading 2nd-place finisher Brad Baker #12 home by just over 8.5 seconds at the Pomona Fairplex.

Bryan Smith, riding the #42 Crosley Radio/Howerton Motorsports powered by Eaken Racing/Guts Wear/Dreyer Motorsports-sponsored Kawasaki 650R-based mount for the team's first-ever half-mile event in their maiden season together, took the Howerton rocket to a 3rd-place finish in what could be the second-best finish ever for a Kawasaki on a half-mile oval in the series.  Smith also left with the ceremonial #1 plate by capturing the 2012 AMA Grand National Twins Series Championship over Halbert, Johnson and Mees, who all finished within 10 points of one another in the big bike class points.

Johnson, riding the #1 Zanotti Racing/Schaeffer's H-D/Boughner Racing Suspension/Arai-backed XR, was able to qualify for the main via his semi win but for only the second time this season in the Twins Series failed to finish inside the top-10 after a 14th-place finish.  It was also the first season in memory that Johnson hasn't won a race, giving up his 2-Time and defending #1 plate to one of his best friends in The Rolling Thunder Show and the man he has battled with frequently over the course of the last few seasons.

In the end, the final tally for the 2012 AMA Grand National Championship saw Mees finish with 291 points, Halbert in the runner-up spot with 278 points and a series' leading four wins for the season, with Johnson rounding out the top-3 overall with 265 points.  Bryan Smith finished fourth in the overall, with Brad Baker rounding out the top-5.  Henry Wiles ended the season with another top-10, finishing in the 7th-place spot at Pomona and 6th in the championship, with Coolbeth still getting 7th in the championship battle after missing the mid-point of the season due to his leg injury at Lima in late June.

In the shot above, Johnson, Mees, Coolbeth and Smith get ready to line-up on the front row of the Springfield Mile II on September 16.

Check out the press release below thanks to AMA Pro Flat Track, and a big congrats goes out to Jared Mees, the 2012 AMA Grand National Champion, and Bryan Smith, the 2012 AMA Grand National Twins Champion.  Great year and a great battle to the end, congrats to all!

Jared Mees Captures 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Title; Kenny Coolbeth Jr. Wins at Pomona

Vandekuur Takes Home Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles No. 1 Plate

POMONA, Calif. (October 13, 2012) - This just in; the state of California knows how to put on a solid race. For the third and final time this season, AMA Pro Flat Track was back in the golden state in front of an ecstatic crowd. Kenny Coolbeth Jr. (Screaming Eagle Harley-Davidson) got the win in what proved to be a phenomenal grand finale to conclude the 2012 season. When the lights turned on Saturday night at the LA County Fairplex, engines roared throughout the confines of the stadium and the euphoric fans hung on every lap.

Though Coolbeth Jr. put on a show to claim his second victory of the year, the real story of the night was Jared Mees (Rogers Racing/ Harley-Davidson) as he took home the coveted AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com and Lucas Oil No. 1 plate.

Jared Mees took the #9 Rogers Racing XR750 to an 8th-place finish last night at Pomona to secure the 2012 AMA Grand National Championship over title rivals Sammy Halbert and Jake Johnson.  AMA Pro Flat Track photo by Dave Hoenig.

"The feeling hasn't really sunk in yet," said Mees. "So much hard work and dedication has gone in to this season and it all paid off. I kind of knew where I was at the whole way and was able to bring it home. I really have to thank my team and sponsors for all of their support this year; this was a great team effort."

Though Mees finished eighth, his effort was more than enough as his only competitors for the title, Sammy Halbert (Southeast Harley/ Harley-Davidson) and defending Grand National Champion Jake Johnson (Zanotti Racing/ Harley-Davidson) looked sluggish the whole way.

Coolbeth Jr. was in a different area code Saturday night as he took the uncontested checkered flag by more than eight seconds. The Connecticut product saved the best race for last as this was clearly his sharpest performance of the year.

The race behind Coolbeth Jr. was where the real action was held. Bryan Smith (Brosley Radio/ Kawasaki) bounced back from a 14th starting position and was neck-and-neck with Brad Baker (Dodge Bros Racing/ Harley-Davidson). Baker was able to hold off Smith for a strong second-place finish with Smith closing out the podium.

"It takes a team to make this happen," said Coolbeth Jr. "I'm not going to take all of the credit. Next season we just have to train hard and stay healthy and we'll be alright. We're going to keep our heads held high and give these boys a run for the championship next year."

AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles

Stephen Vanderkuur (Parkinson Brothers Racing/ Honda) has been a beast all year long and Saturday night's showdown was no exception. The young gun won the final race of the season in convincing fashion and clinched the AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles National Championship.

"This feels unbelievable," said Vanderkuur. "I want to give a huge thank you to my team and a big shout-out to everyone who helped me achieve this goal. There are really so many people to thank for my success."

Vanderkuur, starting from pole position, found himself trailing rival Jason Isennock (High Dairy Stores/ Honda) early on, but a crash on lap four caused a staggered restart. The second chance was all Vanderkuur needed as he caught Isennock on the back stretch and stole the lead. However, one man's fortune is another man's tough luck, as the staggered start proved to be the last thing Isennock needed as it caused him to fall back to fourth and eventually land outside the top-five finishers.

Dominic Collindres (Weirbach Racing/ Honda) ran a good race, finishing in second on the night and fourth on the season in the Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles standings. Wyatt Maquire (Kirkland Racing/ Yamaha) closed out the podium with a solid third-place finish.

Vanderkuur has been atop the standings for the majority of the season and it became evident early on that the upcoming star was on his way to a breakout year.

AMA Pro Flat Track 2012 Flat Track Finals at Pomona Half-Mile Ready to Decide the Overall Grand National & Twins Series Championship

In a matter of just a few short hours, fans, teams, sponsors and riders will hit the track for the season-finale of the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season at the Pomona Half-Mile as three riders get ready to battle it out for AMA Grand National Championship when the first practice is scheduled to roll out on the track at 6:30 PM EDT/3:30 PM PDT.

With a 12-point lead in the overall standings, Jared Mees on the #9 Rogers Racing/Blue Springs H-D/Saddlemen/National Cycle-sponsored XR750 will be looking to sew-up his first-ever Grand National Championshp after taking the Twins Series Championship in '09 & '11 and earlier this season securing the Singles Series Championship for the first time at the Springfield Short Track.

Sammy Halbert on the #7 South East H-D/The South Ass/Mo Vaughn Transport/LZ Racing-backed XR will be looking to add to his '11 Singles Series Championship and his '09 and 'mythical' overall Grand National Championship title that he carries from the last season that the overall champion wasn't recognized by the series.

Jake Johnson, the 2-Time and defending '10 & '11 AMA Grand National Champion will be looking to retain his crown and become the first 3-Time Champion in-a-row since Chris Carr in the early '00s, as the '02 Rookie of the Year looks to also add to his '06 & '08 Singles Series Championships.  20-points in arrears heading into today's final round, Johnson has a tall hill to climb in order to be able to repeat.

Also being decided today at Pomona will be the now-ceremonial Twins Series Championship for the 2012 season, which sees four riders within nine points of one another for the championship in the 'big bike' class.  With Johnson leading the group with 168 points, Sammy back another three points, Bryan Smith another one point back, and Mees sitting in the fourth spot heading into today's final event with 159 points.  This battle alone could make for some interesting fodder if nothing else today!

Bryan Smith will be trying to go after that ceremonial #1 plate in his first event this season on the #42 Crosley Radio/Howerton Motorsports powered by Eaken Racing/Guts Wear/MPH-backed Kawasaki 650R-based parallel twin.  The Howerton and Crosley folks announced last week they would be supporting Smith in his efforts to claim the Twins Series Championship and will be looking to gauge their level of success in the five mile events this season on a big half-mile track.  This will also lead to another interesting mix in the action today at the Fairplex in Pomona.

In the shot above from the Springfield Mile II on September 16, Smith leads Halbert, Johnson, defending and 2-time Springfield Mile winner Willie McCoy on his #59 Harley-Davidson of Wausau/Independence H-D/Tucker Rocky/Arai-backed XR and Jared Mees with just a few laps to go in what would be Smith's and the Howerton team's second win of the season in their debut effort together.

So while you are getting fired-up for tonight's action at Pomona, you can check out the AMA Pro Flat Track press release below, and then follow along with the Pomona guide further below to keep up with the action in the final round of the 2012 season in The Rolling Thunder Show as we all await the first green flag of the day and the final checkered flag of the season to see who wraps what up and who comes home the day's victor.

The 2012 AMA Pro Grand National Championship Comes Down to the Wire at the Flat Track Finals at the Pomona Fairplex

Sent on behalf of the promoters of the Law Tigers AMA Pro Flat Track Finals:

POMONA, Calif. (October 11, 2012) - When the Law Tigers AMA Pro Flat Track Finals thunders into action Saturday, October 13th at the Fairplex in Pomona, it will mark the start of the biggest battle of the season. The points are close and the competition will definitely be intense as America's top flat track racers go for the coveted title.

Leading the charge for glory is Jared Mees. Hailing from Clio, Mich., Mees holds a 12 point lead and is eager to take the title. A harder charger from beginning to end, Mees has put his Harley-Davidson into victory lane once this season and on the podium nine times.  "I finished fifth at Pomona last year and ended the year in second overall," he says. "This time out I want to better my finish and take the title.

However, Sammy Halbert of Graham, Wash., has a totally different scenario. Trailing Mees by just 12 points, Halbert is equally as determined to take the coveted title. So far this year, he has scored four wins, the most of any rider in the series, and four podium finishes.  "I really like racing at Pomona," smiles Halbert. "It is a very challenging track and those are definitely the kind I enjoy. I really think I have a good shot at dominating this time out. I took a third last year and hopefully I can better that and bring home the win."

Sitting 20 points behind is reigning champion Jake Johnson. Johnson, who also earned the title in 2010, is looking to make it three-in-a-row. Although he has finished on the podium eight times so far this season, he had yet to take the checkered. Johnson has scored at least one Grand National victory each consecutive year since 2002 and is the only rider to do so. However, with just one race to go this season, Johnson is winless. Determined not to break his record, Johnson is more than determined to repeat his 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Finals performance and end the year with a win.

And these are only three of the competitors in this, the final race of the season. Fans will get to see an incredible night of intense, ground-pumping action that will crown the two Champions of the AMA Pro Racing Flat Track Series. Both the Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Champion and the Motorcycle SuperStore.com Pro Singles Championship will be decided on this Saturday night.

Hitting speeds up to 130 mph and racing handlebar-to-handlebar, flat track racing is indeed the most exciting form of two-wheel racing in America today. There is no time to coast, no time to try and figure out strategy. It is sheer go-for-it from beginning to end.

Jake Johnson #1 leads Jared Mees #9, Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. #2, Bryan Smith #42 and the rest of the field during the first lap of the Springfield Mile II on September 16.  Johnson will need to overcome a 20-point deficit in the championship in order to retain his 2-time and defending crown over Mees as the series winds up the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season at the Pomona Half-Mile today in California.  AMA Pro Flat Track photo by Dave Hoenig.

This year the action starts early as local motorcycle clubs will be featuring their bikes on display at the pre-race tailgate party complete with live music, motorcycle vendors, and family activities will run from 3-5 pm. The racing action gets under way at 6 pm and continues into the night until the AMA Pro Champions are crowned.
