Team Rizla Suzuki Looks to Be Returning for 2012 MotoGP World Championship

Rizla Suzuki MotoGP team manager Paul Denning (back of garage left) talks with another team member while the team's GSV-R is being readied for rider Alvaro Bautista for the RedBull Indianapolis MotoGP's 4th annual event in August 2011.  Bautista had just earlier qualified in the 9th position on the grid at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway event, and went on to finish in a very solid 6th place the next day.  Struggling with being a one-man team, Bautista and the Suzuki MotoGP are to be commended for their great efforts this year to gain good results, when he is not out due to injuries.

Bautista looked good in leading the free practice session yesterday afternoon in the wet at Valencia, and was 7th in the dry session this morning.  He went on to qualify 5th today, only .568 seconds behind Repsol Honda pilot Dani Pedrosa.  The only bad thing-Casey Stoner was over 1 second faster then Pedrosa in taking the pole at the Spanish circuit on one of the other lightning-fast Repsol Honda RC212Vs.

For a team that hasn't won in over four years and struggled mightily over the course of the last few, they have done a whirlwind job of getting top 10 results in the GPs that they have finished.  And the grids for the premier road racing series in the world look to remain with a blue machine filling a slot come the 2012 season.

With expectations since late last season that Suzuki would not return for the 2012 season in the MotoGP World Championship, it looks as if that has changed--for the better.  The loss of their presence at the GP rounds in the garage or on the grid would be devastating to MotoGP, leaving only Honda, Ducati and Yamaha to field factory-backed efforts.  With Suzuki cutting back for the 2011 season to one rider, it seems to have helped in terms of concentration of working on getting the 800-based GSV-R more competitive.  And with the word of their return a possibility exists they may re-expand to two riders for 2012, which many are hoping will go to former Suzuki MotoGP pilot and 2011 British Superbike Championship runner-up John Hopkins.

What may be the only struggle in the early part of the season is Suzuki is still planning to run the 800-based GSV-R while the rest of the factory and satellite-backed teams run the new full-blown 1000-based prototypes.  The new 'CRT' teams will help to fill the grids with production-based rules with some variances in suspension set-up, which is Dorna and MotoGP's way of trying to spread the wealth, but more importantly, fill the grids to something more than the 16 or 17 riders that have contested the series for the last few years.

There are still a lot of cards to play out in the off-season, even with the tragic passing of Marco Simoncelli and the seat on the San Carlo Gresini Honda now open and up-for-grabs.  Bautista is assured the #1 spot for his efforts this year, but anything beyond that is still up in the air--especially until Suzuki says 'officially.'  Off-season testing starts on Tuesday at Valencia, and it is confirmed Suzuki will take part--good news in itself.

Here's the story from the good folks at Motorcycle News.com from across the pond, that revealed the great news about Team Suzuki most probably staying with their MotoGP efforts into the 2012 season:

Reflections From the 4th Annual RedBull Indianapolis MotoGP Weekend

A quartet of riders hammers down the long front straight at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the third practice session for round 12 of the 2011 MotoGP World Championship.  Although announced attendance was down somewhat from last year, the crowd on Saturday actually appeared much larger then figures released.  IMS and Dorna were to have announced yesterday the return in 2012 of the MotoGP World Championship, but according to Mel Harder of IMS, this announcement has been delayed while 'final tweaks' to the schedule are being hammered out.

Ben Spies motors off on his scooter behind the Yamaha Factory Racing team's garage after the 3rd practice session on Saturday, August 27.  Spies had a great race after qualifying later in the day on the front row, and being bumped back to 9th on the start of yesterday's final.  He rode like the champ he is, and most likely will be in MotoGP, to bring the 50th anniversay Yamaha home in 3rd behind winner Casey Stoner and runner-up and 2010 Indy winner Dani Pedrosa.

Kenny Roberts' 1980 YZR500 championship winning machine sits on display under one of the Yamaha tents.  Roberts rode some demo laps on this very machine at Laguna Seca last month, but unfortunately it was 'display only' at Indy.

Alvaro Bautista does some interesting stretching exercises as he rolls out of pitlane on the #19 Rizla Suzuki GSV-R during the 3rd practice session on Saturday morning, August 27.  Whatever they were, they definitely seemed to work as Bautista brought the machine home in the 6th spot in Sunday's round 12 action of the 2011 MotoGP World Championship race at Indy.

Mike Lloyd of the Lloyd Brothers Motorsports Ducati team had the team's AMA Pro Flat Track machine on display inside the massive Ducati Island area over the course of the weekend.  In both passes I made to try and get a chance to say hi, Mike was busy with the fans talking about the machine that currently sits in the 5th overall position in the point standings with rider Brad Baker.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nicky Hayden appears all smiles en route to Ducati Island at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on August 27.  Hayden had his worst-ever weekend at IMS in finishing 15th and only scoring a single point after choosing a tire that was too soft, even in the cooler Sunday final temperatures.  The Kentucky Kid spent the better part of his off-time away from the bike hanging with friends and family and signing autographs for many a fan over the weekend.

As Dean Adams from SuperBikePlanet.com puts it, the 'bike that wouldn't die' was on display in the Yamaha display vendor area over the weekend at Indy.  This is the same replica TZ750 that The King rode some demo laps on at the Lucas Oil Indy Mile in 2009.  I never get tired of seeing this, even after 36 years passing!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Colin Edwards' #5 Monster Energy Tech 3 Yamaha M1 sits on display under one of the Yamaha tents at the RedBull Indianapolis MotoGP round.  The Texas Tornado was inundated with questions as to his plans for the 2012 season, but wasn't able to shine a light on his future over the weekend.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One of the late Gary Nixon's former Triumph Triples was on display in the paddock area at IMS over the weekend.  Former racer Steve Parrish also did a lap of honor on the bike to pay homage to his departed friend, who passed away in early August.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Monster Energy umbella girls kept many a race fan very happy while posing behind the MotoGP garages at Indianapolis, including long-time race fan and compatriot/best bud of Stu's Shots, Tim Powers.  Powers is also a former National WERA champion from back in the mid-late '80s.  Smiles all around!

Rizla Suzuki Announces Alvaro Bautista Returning at Estoril MotoGP Round

The #19 Rizla Suzuki GSV-R of Alvaro Bautista sits on display outside the team's garages during the Indianapolis RedBull Moto GP round in August of 2010.  Suzuki kept Bautista in the saddle for the 2011 season as the team's only rider, and after his injury at Qatar in the season opener, drafted former team rider John Hopkins to contest the team's machine in Jerez for round 2.  The rumors are still running deep that Suzuki won't be on the grid for the 2012 season, unless it would be contesting the current bike in the new-for-2012 '1000' class.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rizla Suzuki team rider Alvaro Bautista was cleared to ride the team's GSV-R this weekend in round 3 action at the Estoril Circuit in Portugal, after breaking his femur in the season opener at Qatar just over 40 days ago.  With MotoGP having a three week break due to the earthquake disaster in Japan, and postponement (and still possbile cancelation) of the Motegi round, Bautista was afforded a little more time to recuperate after his injury.  Action kicks off tomorrow in Portugal and Bautista and Rizla Suzuki will make a determination after the first free practice session if he is up to racing for the whole weekend or not.

Here's the official press release thanks to the Rizla Suzuki MotoGP team:

Take a Peek Inside the Rizla Suzuki MotoGP Garage

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The #19 Rizla Suzuki GSV-R MotoGP machine of '06 125CC World Champion Alvaro Bautista sits outside the team's shed at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP round in August of 2010. Former team mate Loris Capirossi has left the team and the Rizla team will be scaling back operations for the 2011 MotoGP season, leaving Bautista as the lone rider on the team. Dorna, the rights owners for the MotoGP brand, is said to be helping the squad out in terms of financials, in order for them to be able to continue racing in the high dollar, high spec MotoGP World Championship Series.

One motorcycle website that I have been finding to be very up-to-date and refreshing is the Ultimate Motorcycling.com site. I just came acrossed some of their stuff initially back in early spring, and have since found it a daily stop in the 'what to do, and what to check' list of regular and daily visits In my quests to gather any and all information related to the areas of motorcycle racing that I am familiar and confortable with, I've made it one of my 'must see' stops of late, even during the dreaded 'off time' in racing which occurs around this time of year where you search and surf for anything and everything to get you that fix to get you through until-in my case-the Dakar Rally kicks off on January 1.

The great guys at UM.com had this nice little video posted today that takes a quick look inside the Rizla Suzuki MotoGP garages during a typical race weekend. You can see from the amount of traffic and people involved (if for no other reason) why MotoGP is as high dollar as it is. Check it out here:
