2013 AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles Grand National Championship Year-End Awards Overview

The season ending awards for the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles Grand National Championship were handed out after the season-finale round at the Pomona Half-Mile on October 12, and although the monetary totals were not what a lot of people would have liked to see, the sport is still thriving in it's overall adrenaline boosting attraction.

Many will probably bit.h and moan about the lack of the big dollars that once were apart of the sport several decades ago, but the fact is The Rolling Thunder Show has not had the thousands of dollars available in sponsorship that was a part of the sport in the days of the heavy tobacco sponsorship that many of the old fans (like myself) remember. And some will bemoan the fact that 'today's economy' is not a good reason for the lack of dollars, but it's pretty plain to see that it has a big impact on what two and four wheeled sports have and are attracting in the way of corporate dollars, whether they are inside the industry or outside the industry.

But anyone with half a clue will also realize that with so many things going on in today's world, people have more of a choice in ways to spend their hard-earned money, if they are able to do so in terms of entertainment, and a big slice of that money once seen in AMA Pro Flat Track is being funneled to other areas-if the companies that have or were involved in the sport are even spending it in terms of any type of sponsorship or advertising. Yeah, excuses, excuses, excuses, but look at the big picture and you will see-and know as I do as a full-time fan of The Rolling Thunder Show, and who follows it with the utmost of sincerity, seriousness and adrenaline just like I did over forty years ago when I first found it, those excuses are plain old reality, and anyone thinking different simply doesn't have that clue.

And of course the costs of operating are higher than what they were in those days for not only the track promoters and the vendors, not to mention the teams, riders and sponsors of the greatest racing show on two wheels in the world.

But bottom line, at least some money is still being funneled and set aside for the year-end awards, and those pay-outs were awarded after the final checkered flag of the season at Pomona, with many a rider being recognized for their accomplishments throughout the season as a result. And with money being paid out to many of those riders, things have improved over what they were several years ago when no year-end bonuses or monies were paid-out to the riders.

The big winner of the big slice of the pie of course went to your new 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Champion, Brad Baker, who in just his third season as an Expert-ranked rider won his first of what could be many championships in the top level flat track series in the world.

Baker took home the lion's share of the dough this season for winning the Grand National Championship and for also scoring the Singles Series title earlier in the season at the Peoria TT on August 11 while riding for the Dodge Brothers Racing team and campaigning his own Honda in the Singles events.

Bryan Smith was next in line after capturing the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track Twins Series Championship for the second year running for the Howerton Motorsports team, while newbie to the top-3 this season, Brandon Robinson, took the 3rd-place honors for the TJ Burnett Farms team. Robinson was easily the most-improved rider this season, and his stunning double win at the Springfield Mile over the Labor Day weekend was enough to make even the most casual fan take notice of his presence at the top of the heap.

Jake Shoemaker won the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track Saddlemen Rookie of the Year honors, joining former winners Baker, Matt Weidman, Jake Johnson and a host of other riders who went on to bigger and even better things as their careers progressed. Shoemaker's run this season was impressive in that he campaigned a privately-owned Kawasaki in the Twins events with an extremely tight-almost nil-budget, and did so in fine form.

There were several other awards presented this season, so a big congrats go out to all of the riders who took home the hard-earned dollars, as well as to those who didn't but yet fought the good fight throughout the season and added to what is still the greatest racing on the planet (as Dakota Dan Johnson from Today's Cycle Coverage likes to say!)

In the shot above from the Indy Mile on August 17, the top-3 finishers in the championship and at Indy-but in a different order than their season-ending battle-celebrate on the podium after what was another great show at the Indiana State Fairgrounds-hosted event run along with the 6th Annual Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP weekend and the last weekend of the Indiana State Fair shining bright in the background.

3rd-place finisher Brad Baker, event winner Bryan Smith and 2nd-place man Brandon Robinson (being interviewed by one of the golden voices of AMA Pro Flat Track, Barry Boone) all show the emotion of what Indy and most especially The Rolling Thunder Show brings after the 25-lap National main had flown the final checkers for the evening.

Flyin' Bryan had just taken the #42 Crosley Radio/Howerton Motorsports Kawasaki rocket to the win at the legendary Indy Mile and had captured the hometown win for his team owner, Rick Howerton. Robinson had followed him home on the TJ Burnett Farms/James Hart Racing Kawi while The Bullet had taken the #12 Dodge Brothers Racing/Sefnco Communications H-D XR750 to the final spot on the box.

Just shy of two months after Indy these three men would also celebrate their stellar seasons in what was another great year of racing.

Check out the full press release below to get a better rundown of the awards handed out at Pomona a couple of weeks ago, and be thankful and happy that these guys (and gals) were able to pocket ANY extra dollars for their great efforts this season.

And when you want to bit.h and moan about the lack of money in the sport, get off the couch and go to a race and support the riders, teams and sponsors of the sport to help do something about it, because if you are just complaining and not giving anything back, YOU are part of the problem, and NOT the solution. And you are missing one heckuva great show!

For their integral part in the success of the 2013 season, the AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles community would like to extend many thanks to all of the sponsors that supported these important year-end awards.

AMA Pro Grand National Championship

Brad Baker (Dodge Bros Racing) claimed his first ever overall Grand National Championship and it took a brilliant final-round effort to do it. Baker's two wins and seven total podiums were enough to edge out a worthy opponent in Bryan Smith (Crosley Radio) by 17 points in the overall standings. The Dryad, Wash. product was recognized for his astonishing achievements this season and was awarded $13,000 and the coveted Grand National Championship No. 1 plate for winning the title.

The following awards were given out on behalf of AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles to the outstanding participants in AMA Pro Grand National Championship competition:

1.       Brad Baker - $13,000
2.       Bryan Smith - $7,000

Bryan Smith won two mile-long races in 2013 on the back of his powerful Kawasaki and earned his second consecutive AMA Pro Grand National Expert Twins Championship. Smith's two victories and six podiums lifted him over Brad Baker in Expert Twins competition by 11 points in the standings, adding heat to an already scorching hot rivalry between the two superstars.

AMA Pro Grand National Expert Singles Championship

Brad Baker became a force on the AMA Pro circuit this season as he not only claimed the overall Grand National Championship but also wrapped up the 2013 AMA Pro Grand National Expert Singles Championship as well early on after edging out Henry Wiles by just two points in the standings. Baker's consistency on his 450cc Specialty Fabrication Inc. Honda and KTM this season led to three second-place finishes and his first ever championship of any kind at the elite expert level.

AMA Pro J&P Cycles Pro Singles Championship

Wyatt Maguire (Kirkland Racing) and Ryan Wells (Waters Auto Body) found themselves in a tight-fight against each other all season and it was only fitting that the AMA Pro J&P Cycles Pro Singles Championship came down to a single marker separating the two to decide the winner. Maguire edged out Wells 137-136 in the points to claim his first ever championship to earn the No. 1 plate in J&P Cycles Pro Singles competition for the 2014 season.

The following awards were given out on behalf of AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles to the outstanding participants in AMA Pro J&P Cycles Pro Singles competition.

Brandon Robinson & the #44 TJ Burnett Farms Kawasaki Team Celebrate 2nd-place Finish at the Legendary Indy Mile

Brandon Robinson awaits the first practice session at the Indy Mile on Saturday, August 17 before heading out onto the track for the day's activities.  Robinson made the best of what could have been a miserable day after losing a motor in the first qualifying session during round 8 of the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles Grand National Championship season at the Indy Mile and rebounded with a great last lap pass coming out of turn 2 that saw him get the best of Jared Mees and Brad Baker in the 25-lap National main event that landed him in the 2nd-place spot on the podium.

Check out the press release below from BRob44 and the TJ Burnett Farms/USC/Hart Racing Kawasaki team about the great turnaround the team made after overcoming the adversity of losing another motor on the day at the legendary Indy Mile.

Brandon Robinson & the TJ Burnett Farms Kawasaki team take 2nd-place finish in round 8 at the Indy Mile

Press release – For Immediate Release

Oxford, PA. – August 21, 2013 –Round 8 of the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles Grand National Championship season is history and the TJ Burnett Farms Kawasaki team with rider Brandon Robinson earned a hard-fought 2nd-place finish at the legendary Indy Mile on August 17 with a last-lap pass to secure a spot on the box at the Indiana State Fairgrounds-hosted event. It was Brob44's second-best finish of the season after the Daytona win.

After two rough results in rounds 6 & 7 of the season at the Castle Rock TT (DNQ) and the Peoria TT (18th-place finish), let alone fighting a painful tooth over the Peoria weekend, BRob44 put himself back into the top-5 of the championship hunt with a great effort at Indy.
“Things started rough with losing a motor early in the day, especially after we practiced in the 6th-place spot, but we rolled out the back-up bike to qualify 19th out of the 47 riders on-hand who took a qualifying time,” stated Robinson. “Hats off to James Hart (Robinson's tuner), Billy Gruwell & TJ for getting us back on track after losing the motor early in the first qualifying session.”

As a result of finishing in the 2nd-place spot behind winner Bryan Smith on the Howerton Motorsports Kawasaki, Robinson and the TJ Burnett Farms Kawasaki team left Indy with 97 points in the championship hunt and only 6 points behind 4th-place man and defending 2012 AMA Grand National Champion Jared Mees.

With five races in the 2013 season left (Colonial Downs, Springfield Mile I & II, Santa Rosa and Pomona), the team is poised for their run to the end of the season. “Colonial Downs coming up this weekend (round 9 on August 24) is a toss-up for us and the rest of the teams, but Springfield could really play into our hands over the Labor Day weekend,” continued Robinson, “and we're really looking forward to the doubleheader there after the weather postponement from the Memorial Day weekend. And I'm also looking forward to Santa Rosa and Pomona, where we ran in the top-10 last year.”

The TJ Burnett Farms/USC/James Hart Racing Kawasaki team hopes to see all of our fans stop by to say 'hi' to us at each of the remaining events so we can share with them the great time we are having this season. We hope to see you all soon!

Brandon Robinson #44 & the TJ Burnett Farms Kawasaki AMA Grand National Championship team would like to thank all of our sponsors for the 2013 season:

Bryan Smith Cleans House in Round 8 of the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles Grand National Championship at the Legendary Indy Mile, Shayna Texter Takes Pro Singles Win

Round 8 of the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles Grand National Championship saw the stars of The Rolling Thunder Show hit the mile oval at the Indiana State Fairgrounds-hosted Indy Mile, and Bryan Smith on the #42 Crosley Radio/Howerton Motorsports Kawasaki made up for lost time this go around in winning every race he was in and running away with the 25-lap National main by over five seconds over runner-up Brandon Robinson.

Smith, who looked to have last year's race in the bag before a battery malfunction forced him out just past the mid-point of the final, more then made up for last year's malady as he cleaned out the house this go around to take his second win of the season in front of a packed house at Indy.

Starting with practice and qualifying (shown above in the final session of the afternoon running with 3rd-place finisher Brad Baker on the #12 Dodge Brothers Racing/Sefnco Communications XR750 in turn one), Flyin' Bryan took fast time over the 47 riders entered for the evening's event who took a qualifying time.

From there, the Michigan resident won the first heat of the night over Zanotti Racing's Steve Bonsey and Robinson, and then headed to the 4-lap Dash for Cash to help put his exclamation point on the evening by running away with the five extra points and the $1K that goes with it.

In the 25-lap National main, Smith set sail and it was all over within a few laps as he extended his lead throughout the night to win by 5.120 seconds over runner-up Robinson on the #44 TJ Burnett Farms/USC/Hart Racing Kawasaki.

As 3rd-place finisher Brad Baker gets interviewed by AMA Pro Flat Track announcer Barry Boone on the victory podium, Smith beams after his great run at Indy while Robinson tries to cool down and relish in his 2nd-place effort and second-best finish of the season.

4th-place finisher Jared Mees leads the troops with just a couple of laps to go on the #1 Rogers Racing/Blue Springs XR750 with championship points leader Baker right alongside.

Robinson, who slowly but surely worked his ways towards the front after running in the bottom part of the top-6 early in the night, made the move of the race on the last lap coming out of turn two and held it until the checkers to take the 2nd-place slot on the podium.  Robinson stated he wasn't sure how he did it but just decided it was time to go, and helped to earn his second-best finish of the year and move him back into the 5th-place slot in the championship hunt after a rough last couple of weeks.  Well deserved man!

Baker rounded out the bo/ with his 3rd-place finish, and his eighth top-5 of the year (although his 2nd-place at Daytona II was disallowed due to improper fork usage), and extended his lead in the championship hunt to 33 points over runner-up Smith (155-122 points) with five rounds to go in the season.  Henry Wiles fell to third in the championship with 120 points after running a strong race on the #17 Lloyd Brothers Motorsports/Ramspur Winery H-D XR750 with a 7th-place finish.

Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. on the #2 Harley-Davidson Motor Co/Screamin' Eagle XR ran with this pack most of the evening before giving way to Robinson's team mate, JD Beach on the #95 TJ Burnett Farms Kawasaki, with Beach rounding out the top-5 and The King of Cool coming home in the 6th-place spot.

Shayna Texter took her second win of the season and the sixth of her promising and young career on the #25A Crosley Radio/DFW Honda CRF450R after making one of the strongest moves of the night in hunting down early leader Stephen Vanderkuur with just a few laps to go and swooping down and clipping his wings at the line by just .343 seconds.  Running in the 6th-place spot around the halfway part of the 16-lap J&P Cycles Pro Singles Championship final, the young lady from Pennsylvania showed her mastery of the mile in taking the win and wowing the crowd on hand, who went nuts after she took the checkers for another very popular win for her and her many fans in attendance.

Shayna is shown above during the first practice session of the day at Indy.

AMA Pro Flat Track has the full set of results which you can check out here.

Cycle News' Larry Lawrence was dashing back and forth all weekend from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's 6th Annual Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP event, and filed his usual excellent race report here.

And Dave Hoenig, the master of the lens for AMA Pro Flat Track, filed this album of shots from Indy.

With a lot going on right now, we'll have more on the great event for you to check out this weekend, as we shot it up and have more to talk about in all the happenings at the Indiana State Fairgrounds-hosted event.  We'll try to have some more out here by the end of the day on Saturday while we check out round 9 of the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles Grand National Championship season as the series heads to Colonial Downs, Virginia for another mile race August 24.

And we would like to take the time to give a special thanks to Family Events/The Promotion Company's Leah Burdette and the great group of people who put on the Indy Mile this year.  They really went out of their way to take care of the press again this year, a wonderful media room, excellent parking and a great show all around.  Thanks again so much for helping to make Indy another super event and for treating us like kings and queens!

You can also read AMA Pro Flat Track's official press release below to see what transpired last Saturday under the lights at Indy.

Smith, Texter Earn Indy Mile Victories in Round 8 of AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (August 17, 2013) - Flint, Michigan's Bryan Smith (Crosley Radio/Kawasaki) was as cool as the Indiana breeze Saturday night during Round 8 of AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Smith, who is famous for using the power of his Kawasaki to diminish the hopes of his competitors on mile-long circuits, proved worthy of his reputation once again tonight as he claimed victory by more than five full seconds over second-place finisher Brandon Robinson (TJ Burnett Farms/Kawasaki).

"This is just unbelievable," said Smith. "I've been racing here since I was 10 years old and now I'm one of the older guys. I probably have more laps logged than anybody here and it just feels great to get this win. This place is extra special to me for a lot of reasons. The fact that I'm part of the Howerton family just adds to all of this excitement. Everyone that's a part of my team is absolutely awesome and I couldn't take any of this credit without including them."

There was no stopping Smith at any point tonight, as he proved yet again that he is the fastest mile-long rider on American soil. Smith's breathtaking practice and qualifying results were early indications that he was going to be very sharp tonight. After convincing Heat 1 and Dash for Cash victories, all early assumptions were proved accurate as Smith came into the night's main event unanimously locked in as the clear-cut favorite to win his second mile of the year.

Bryan Smith on the #42 Crosley Radio/Howerton Motorsports Kawasaki took all the glory at the legendary Indy Mile by winning every race he was in on Saturday, August 17.  AMA Pro Flat Track photo by Dave Hoenig.

Though he was never in the hunt to compete with Smith, Robinson's second-place finish was nothing to cringe at as he had to battle it out with current Grand National Championship points leader and Eatonville, Washington native Brad Baker (Dodge Bros Racing/Harley-Davidson) for second. Robinson edged Baker on the final lap to earn second place for his best finish since winning Round 2 at Daytona earlier in the year.

Consistency is the name of Baker's game. Though he lost the battle for second to Robinson, Baker's third-place effort to round out the podium marks his eighth consecutive top-five finish in 2013.

Clio, Michigan product and defending Grand National Champion Jared Mees (Rogers Racing/Harley-Davidson) finished fourth and Philpot, Kentuckty's JD Beach took advantage of his GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing off-week and rounded out the top five with an impressive night all-around, winning his heat race and claiming fifth in the main event.

AMA Pro J&P Cycles Pro Singles

The AMA Pro J&P Cycles Pro Singles main event was decided late in the race when Willow Street, Pennsylvania's Shayna Texter (Crosley Radio/Honda) ripped the lead from Davison, Michigan's Stephen Vanderkuur (Parkinson Brothers Racing/Honda) as she hawked down the defending champion on lap nine. Texter would refuse to forfeit any ground for the final two laps as she closed out her second victory of the season.

"I knew I had to step up once I saw Vanderkuur put his head down and start to break away," said Texter. "I was in the mix with a big group of guys early on and I just wanted to break loose from it. I have to give hats off to my team for giving me a great bike. Two years ago, I was unable to attend this race because I was in the hospital with my father who eventually passed away. I'm dedicating this race to him."

Vanderkuur got the holeshot and the lead early on but the second Texter stole the lead from him, an ecstatic Indianapolis crowd rose to their feet, cheering on the female phenomenon every wheel of the way as she rode her 450cc motorcycle to victory.

Vanderkuur's second-place effort marks his best finish of the season and the reigning champion will look to carry over this momentum to the next event as he tries to defend his title.

Starting from fifth on the grid, Attica, New York's Cody Johncox (Sunnyside Cycle/Yamaha) was able to find his way onto the podium with a third-place finish after edging out fourth-place finisher and
Brisbane, California's Dominic Colindres (Motorcycle Superstore/Honda) by almost two full seconds.

Mead, Washington product and current AMA Pro J&P Cycles Pro Singles points leader Wyatt Maguire (Kirkland Racing/Yamaha) salvaged a fifth-place finish to round out the top five.

Larry Pegram's Ducati Flat Tracker Up For Grabs...

...if you are ready to pony up 17 large for it, that is.
The great guys from across the pond at http://sideburnmag.blogspot.com/ posted a shot
and a link from www.FlatTrack.com that shows Larry Pegram's Ducati Flat Tracker is up for
sale from the folks at Lloyd Brother Racing. When Larry 'The Worm' Pegram wasn't winning
AMA American SuperBike races this year, he was occassionally throwing a leg over this fine
piece that was set up for the AMA Flat Track series. He was at Indy the last Saturday in
August for the Indy Mile--unfortunately he didn't make the main after running both the heat
and semi races--but the bike is a wonderful piece of rolling art as you can see from the pics.
I threw in the links from the boys at Sideburn Mag as well as the link as posted on FlatTrack.com as well as Larry and Lloyd Brothers' official sites so you can check them out
as well.

The King Talks About Riding the TZ Again...

Twas the night before Christmas.....hell, no, seeing this run again after all these years
was BETTER then Christmas man! This was like that long-yearned for toy or experience
or woman that you had briefly flirted with, wanted, or would just about die for. This was
history in the making. To a motorcycle racing fan, this was like being present when Lincoln
delivered the Emancipation Proclamation. This time would live on in infamy....
And to the hard core bike racing fan, like myself, being able to see, let alone hear and see
the man who made it famous, roll it out on that same track some 34+ years later, well, man,
this was like the planets had really aligned perfectly, and Santa Claus had left you the BEST
and BIGGEST present ever! And you were there for the original, and for the follow up to
ensue. This was karmic.
As you have deducted, I am talking, blabbering, drooling again about THE bike that made
history on August 24, 1975, and THE man who rode it to not only the winner's circle but to
history as we all know it. And who to fans of motorcycle racing all know as 'The King,' Mr.
Kenneth Lee Roberts. To see him bring out this very fine replica again that night, was a
very moving and rewarding experience. Like deja vu, but also knowing you REALLY were
there 34+ years ago, too.
But this was Kenny's night, in front of a world class flat track crowd, as well as some of the
world class riders on hand from the MotoGP race running just down the road at the Indianapolis
Motor Speedway. And he DID NOT dissapoint, as he rode out and immediately pinned it and
threw it into the corners on all 3 laps almost as hard has he had done so many years before.
Like Larry Lawrence said then on his http://www.theriderfiles.com/ site, it was TRULY a magical evening, one that will be planted in my mind for many years to come.
So if you were there as well, or even if you weren't, you must take the time as I do to thank
Dean Adams and his people at http://www.superbikeplanet.com/ for posting this link to YouTube of KR talking about that night. And with a pretty decent sound card and speakers, you can hear the sound of the nasty ole 2 stroke wailing in the wind like a chainsaw on steroids and acid. WOW!
The current color shots attached were all taken that w/e of the Indy round of the MotoGP
circus. Yamaha had (another) wonderful display in the vendors area of the infield with this
beauty set up out in front of one of their tents. It's a wonder they didn't have someone
standing by to wipe the saliva off of it because myself I know I made a mess just gawking at
it---and that was before I took these shots as well as the ones from a few weeks ago I posted
of it here on my blog. As Kenny mentioned, Ray Abrams with A&A Racing was the craftsman
that made this particular replica happen. There are suttle differences other then the tires as
KR mentions in the video that made it easy for someone like me who had been there know it
wasn't the original. But it's PRETTY DARN CLOSE! And I would bore you if I pointed those
differences out, anyway. So relish in the beauty of this fine piece. And remember, this IS
history! The other color shot is of KR that night holding court in the pits at the mile.
The original black and white shot above is the original shot I took on that original day of
infamy back in August of '75. It is the same shot as used on my blog header panel, and one
that thanks to so many people like Dean Adams with http://www.superbikeplanet.com/ and Mark Gardiner with http://www.roadracerx.com/ has made a few rounds on the internet and in print here and there as well. I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed taking them. And drooling all over it while doing so.......
Thanks for the memories Kenny! A great evening and a great steed for a great man and rider!
