AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship Set to Return to Charlotte Half-Mile on August 29

The riders and teams of the 2015 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship will return to the Charlotte Half-Mile on Saturday, August 29 for the first race held at the facility since the 2002 season. Round 11 of the season will see The Rolling Thunder Show make a stop at the North Carolina track located at the Charlotte Motor Speedway complex 13 days after the Peoria TT and the weekend before the Labor Day weekend running of the Springfield Mile II.

The track last hosted an AMA Grand National event in 2002 in what was the third year of a three year stop on the tour's schedule just after the turn of the century. 3-Time AMA Grand National Twins Champion Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. is the only top-10 ranked rider still active that was racing the last time the series hit the venue, noted for it's hosting of many World of Outlaws sprint car races over the years.

In the shot above, Coolbeth and the #2 Zanotti Racing/Harley-Davidson Motor Co/Gator H-D-sponsored XR750 team, including championship-winning tuner Dave Atherton and his famous and retired son, Kevin Atherton, head towards the grid during the red flag at the Springfield Mile I over the Memorial Day weekend on May 24, 2015. Coolbeth currently sits atop the series standings with a 5-point lead over defending AMA Grand National Champion Jared Mees (67-62 points) after the running of the Sacto Mile on May 30. Last weekend's Hagerstown Half-Mile was rained out with no rain date available.

Check out the full press release below thanks to SMI Promotions, the promoters of the Sacto Mile, the Las Vegas Finals and the upcoming Charlotte Half-Mile on August 29. If you are in the Charlotte area during the last weekend of August, you definitely need to head to the Charlotte Motor Speedway to see the bar banging action in the greatest racing series on two wheels in the world. I guarantee it will be an event that you don't want to miss!

AMA Pro Grand National Motorcycle Racing Returns to the Carolinas

Charlotte Motor Speedway to host Don Tilley Memorial Charlotte Half-Mile on Aug. 29
CHARLOTTE, NC (June 24, 2015) – After a 13-year absence the AMA Pro Grand National Championships are returning to Charlotte Motor Speedway’s Half-Mile dirt oval with the Don Tilley Memorial Charlotte Half-Mile on Saturday, August 29, 2015. It’s round 11 of the 15-race series, which features the premier event the Harley-Davidson GNC1 presented by Vance & Hines as well as the GNC2 support race. This marks the first time the series has raced at the Dirt Track at Charlotte since 2002, when Kevin Varnes won the Charlotte AMA Grand National on a Harley-Davidson.
This race is named after legendary North Carolina Harley-Davidson motorcycle dealer and race bike builder Don Tilley, who tragically died in an accident last August.
The Dirt Track at Charlotte is a half-mile clay oval on the Charlotte Motor Speedway complex. The Don Tilley Memorial is a return to the early roots of the facility. The track was built in 2000 and one of its first premier events was an AMA Grand National on July 22, 2000, won by Mike Hacker on a Saddlemen Racing/Dodge Brothers Harley-Davidson XR750. The Dirt Track at Charlotte hosted three AMA Grand Nationals from 2000 to 2002. Those nationals were won by Hacker (2000), the late great North Carolina motorcycle racing legend Will Davis (2001) and Varnes (2002).

Kenny Coolbeth (No. 2), of Center Hill, Florida, is one of the few riders still in the series today who raced at Charlotte back in the early 2000s. (Larry Lawrence photo/SMI)

After four rounds so far this season it’s Kenny Coolbeth, Jr., leading the AMA Pro Harley-Davidson GNC1 presented by Vance & Hines. Coolbeth, of Center Hill, Florida, is one of the few riders still in the series today who raced at Charlotte back in the early 2000s. Coolbeth leads defending series champ Jared Mees. Both Coolbeth and Mees race Harley-Davidsons. The surprise rider in third in the standings is Triumph rider Brandon Robinson. Robinson is looking to give the Triumph brand its first AMA Grand National victory in 36 years.
The Tilley Memorial is one of the races Coolbeth has circled on his calendar.
“I’m really looking forward to coming back to Charlotte,” Coolbeth said. “I remember it as one of the best Half-Mile tracks we ever visited. The thing that’s really nice about it is that it’s a racy track, there were a lot of different lines and a lot of good passing opportunities.”
Coolbeth twice finished runner-up at Charlotte and he hopes that in the return to the track he can finally score the victory that he was so close to earning.
“I finished second to Will Davis and then the next year to Kevin Varnes,” Coolbeth said. “It would be nice to get a win there. I love the track and it suits my style, so I think I’ll have as good a shot at it as anyone.”
Coolbeth discounts any notion that since he’s raced Charlotte before that he’ll have an advantage.
“It’s been a long time ago now,” he said. “And all the riders pick up on tracks so fast. I don’t think I’ll have any advantage. It’s a wide-open, fast track, so any of a number of riders could do well there. It should be some good racing.”
Coolbeth went on to say he also looks forward to coming back to North Carolina, calling the area the home of some of the most enthusiastic racing fans in the country.
The AMA Pro Grand National Championship series is one of the longest running motorcycle racing championships in the world. Known by its fans as flat track racing, many consider this form of motorcycle racing the most exciting on the planet. On the straightaways of the Dirt Track at Charlotte top speeds can reach 120 miles per hour running just inches apart, then pitching their machines into the turns and controlling their arc by throttling up and spinning their bike’s rear wheel, all of this on a racing surface made of dirt! Flat track racing has produced many of America’s Motorcycle Grand Prix Champions such as Kenny Roberts, Eddie Lawson, Wayne Rainey, Kenny Roberts, Jr. and Nicky Hayden.
Practice for the Don Tilley Memorial Charlotte Half-Mile begins at on Saturday, Aug. 29 at 2:00 p.m. and opening ceremonies for the evening program kick off at 6:00 p.m.

Round 8 of the 2014 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship at the Sacramento Mile on July 26 to Feature Several Local Riders

Round 8 of the 2014 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship is just over eight days away on Saturday, July 26, with round 7 at the Grays Harbor Half-Mile set to take place tomorrow on Saturday, July 19, but SMI, the promoters of the Sacto Mile, are looking ahead to the action that should blow the hats off of every fan in attendance at Cal-Expo when the racing begins.

With a full field of contenders expected for the second mile National main event of the season, the focus could very easily be on a handful of riders from the local area that are considered great possibilities to win next Saturday. With the area spawning some of the richest talent in racing history, it's no surprise that this year's edition will also be filled with an abundance of talented racers.

In the shot above from round 8 of the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship at the legendary Indy Mile, Salinas, CA. resident and Zanotti Racing team member Stevie Bonsey awaits the first round of practice in his pit as the #80 Zanotti Racing/RGR/Arai-sponsored Harley-Davidson XR750 sits with the tire warmer on ready to do battle. 7-Time AMA Grand National Champion Chris Carr, the rider/coach/team consultant for the Bonsey camp of Zanotti Racing, sits patiently in the team's pit area ready for the evening's action.

Bonsey, who hails from the same area of California that spawned some pretty famous talent such as Ricky Graham and Doug Chandler, among others, is one of those riders considered a great possibility to take another Grand National win at the Sacto Mile next Saturday.

Read on to see and hear about all of the great riders who will be on-hand at Sacramento and who will be defending the west coast's honor in what will be guaranteed as a day and evening to remember!

Press release courtesy of SMI, the promoters of the Sacramento Mile, round 8 of the 2014 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship on Saturday, July 26.

Area Riders Looking for Breakthrough at Sacramento Mile
Top-10 Ranked Stevie Bonsey and Briar Bauman among leading contenders
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (July 18, 2014) – For years riders like Mert Lawwill, Alex Jorgensen, Ricky Graham and Chris Carr gave Sacramento Mile fans homegrown riders to cheer on to victory. Carr, who was raised in Stockton, Calif., was the last of the area contenders to take victory at the prestigious event. Since then there’s been a drought of local talent capable of winning the race, but that’s changing. Riders like Briar Bauman, Stevie Bonsey, Chad Cose, Mike Rush and Mikey Martin are giving renewed hope that a rider from Northern California will once again stand atop the podium at Cal Expo, when the AMA Pro Grand National Championship makes its annual stop at the California State Fair next Saturday, July 26.
You’d have to excuse Northern California racing fans for maybe getting a little spoiled over the years, especially with Carr being the second all-time wins leader at the Sacramento Mile, earning nine-career AMA Grand National victories at Cal Expo. Carr, along with his former fellow Harley-Davidson factory rider and Motorcycle Hall Famer Jay Springsteen, will be honored at this year’s 49th running of the Sacramento Mile for their lifetime of accomplishments.  And while the memories of Carr’s wins at Sacramento are certainly sweet, a big majority of the thousands of fans who will attend this year’s race are from Northern California, and they’d like to once again see a home rider be a contender.
Those fans need look no further than Salinas, California’s Stevie Bonsey to find a local leading contender capable of scoring a podium finish at Sacramento. Bonsey is already a two-time winner in the series, having taken national wins on the Half-Miles at Calistoga, California, in 2010 and Tucson, Arizona in 2012. Bonsey races for the powerful Zanotti Racing Harley-Davidson squad and feels he has the chance to earn a solid result at Sacramento this year. Bonsey said of all the mile ovals the series visits Sacramento just might be the most challenging.
“That track is tough,” Bonsey said. “It’s a real narrow, notch groove. You’ve obviously got to get a good start and be towards the front at the end of it and hopefully keep those Kawasakis behind me. Bryan’s (Smith) bike was pretty much unbeatable there last year. I saw Brad (Baker) trying to get him and there was nothing Brad could do. He kept trying to go under him and Bryan just had a little bit more motor.”
With a Zanotti Harley under him Bonsey said he finally has the bike capable of winning at Sacramento. It won’t hurt that the Harley-Davidson XR750s no longer have to run intake restrictor plates, so they’ll have even more power this year. “I’ve got a beautiful bike to ride this year and hopefully I can put it up front,” Bonsey concluded.
Another Salinas rider who could be a factor at Sacramento is 2012 AMA Rookie of the Year Briar Bauman. Bauman is racing the groundbreaking Bill Werner-built Monster Energy Kawasaki. Werner was the man who first brought Kawasaki’s EX650 to Grand National racing. In the years since the Kawasaki is arguably the bike to beat on the big mile ovals. Bauman, like Bonsey, comes into Sacramento ranked in the top 10 and is poised to score a solid result at Sacramento. Bauman won his first Grand National race earlier this season at Daytona.

Bill Werner was the man who got the whole Kawasaki flat track bike craze started. Now former Rookie of the Year Briar Bauman is showing good promise on the machine and is hoping to do well at his home race, the Sacramento Mile. (Larry Lawrence photo)

“It’s a huge,” Bauman says of Sacramento. “You show up there and because it’s the closest mile we have all your friends and family show up because they want to see it and support you. To be able to do well at that track would be the best, to do it in front of home fans would be huge. I did well on the 450s (Pro Singles) and then in my rookie (expert) year there I broke so I didn’t get to race. Last year I think I finished around tenth (it was actually 13th). I think I’m learning as I go and hopefully this year we’ll be a little bit further up.”
Bauman also feels Sacramento is especially tough because of the narrow groove and that brings unique strategies into play in terms of setting up passes. “It starts out a little like a cushion track, but as the night wears on it becomes a small notched, blue groove we race on all night,” Bauman explains. “It’s a little tough to pass. You have to really draft well and kind of make the passes aggressive because the notch it so small. Other than that it’s a good track to ride on and it’s awesome because it’s home.”
“I know I can do well there,” Martin said. “Last year I was the fast qualifier so I’m looking forward to it. It’s only 20 minutes away from my house, so I can sleep in my own bed and hopefully wake up and put the Triumph on the podium. I think it’s been 40-something years since Triumph’s been on the podium at Sacramento. Hopefully I can be the next one to do it.”

Mikey Martin (No. 91) is hoping to be the first rider in over 40 years to win the Sacramento Mile aboard a Triumph. (Larry Lawrence photo)

Other area riders who could be a factor at Sacramento include Chad Cose (Fremont) and Mikey Rush (San Jose). Both are ranked inside the top-20 in the national standings.

Practice for the Sacramento Mile begins at on Saturday, July 26 at 2:15 p.m. and opening ceremonies for the evening program kicks off at 6:15 p.m.

Kenny Coolbeth Takes the Win in Round 4 of the 2014 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship at the Knoxville Half-Mile

Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. took a big step today towards earning the 2014 AMA Grand National Championship in romping to the win in round 4 of the season at the Knoxville Half-Mile. Coolbeth, on his #2 Zanotti Racing/Dave Atherton-tuned Harley-Davidson XR750, set sail from the start and took the win by just shy of 3.2 seconds over runner-up and fast qualifier and pole sitter Jake Johnson on the #5 Lloyd Brothers Motorsports/Brent Armbruster-tuned XR.

Coolbeth's win was his second of the season after winning the Daytona Short Track II round on March 14, and has finished no worse than second in the last three events after garnering a lowly, for him 17th-place finish in the Daytona Short Track I season-opening race. After parting company with the Harley-Davidson factory team at the end of last year's season and a seven-year relationship with the Milwaukee-based team, the King of Cool hooked up with the Zanotti team, three time winners of the AMA Grand National Championship, and has looked all but untouchable since finding his groove in Daytona.

In the shot above, Kenny, Jr. and his lovely wife discuss strategy with Kenny, Sr. for the upcoming first qualifying session at the Springfield Mile I on May 25. Coolbeth went on to finish in second-place at the Illinois State Fairgrounds on the #2 Zanotti Racing/Moroney's H-D/Burt Ives Honda-sponsored H-D XR750.

Coolbeth now takes a eight point lead in the overall championship over Jake Johnson (80-72) heading into round 5 of the season at the Lima Half-Mile on June 28. Sammy Halbert, who finished in 3rd-place today, also now sits in the 3rd-place in the championship standings another eight points in arrears of Johnson, with today's 4th-place finisher Jared Mees another six points back in fourth place in the standings.

Full results of today's events can be found here thanks to AMA Pro Flat Track, and Cycle News has a short synopsis of the race that can be read here, and you can check out the press release below from AMA Pro Flat Track as we get geared up to do some cushion pushin' in the Ohio National Championship round of the Rolling Thunder Show as it heads to Lima, OH. on the last Saturday in June to put on another great show at another of the series' great events.

Kenny Coolbeth keeps it cool in Knoxville, earns 31st AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship win

KNOXVILLE, Iowa (June 15, 2014) - Kenny Coolbeth, aboard his Zanotti Racing Harley-Davidson, dismantled the Grand National Championship competition on Sunday, June 15, at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa and earned the 31st GNC win of his illustrious career and his second on the young 2014 AMA Pro Flat Track season.

Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. took command early at the Knoxville Half-Mile to lead every lap in the 25-lap National main on the #2 Zanotti Racing XR750. AMA Pro Flat Track photo by Dave Hoenig.

"What can I say? You give me the kind of equipment that Zanotti Racing provides me with and this is what happens," said Coolbeth. "I'm just having fun out there. That's all it takes for me to go fast, is to simply have fun. I have great people to work with and I look forward to weekends now."

Coolbeth hooked up with Zanotti Racing last offseason, and together, the tandem has rocked the AMA Pro Flat Track paddock thus far in 2014, earning two wins and enough points to sit atop the standings after four rounds. Coolbeth got out to an early lead after starting from second on the grid, and the Morris, Conn., native led every turn of the 25-lap shootout.

Jake Johnson trailed Coolbeth for the majority of the race. Mounted on his Ramspur Winery Harley-Davidson and starting from pole position, Johnson didn't have a great start and found himself sixth after the first lap. Johnson rebounded quite nicely, though, as he knifed his way through the pack and eventually caught Sammy Halbert on lap nine to claim second place. From there, Johnson was able to break away and earn a strong runner-up finish.

The fiercest duel on the track wound up being between Halbert and Jared Mees. The two were in a dogfight for the majority of the race, going neck-and-neck, bar-to-bar with each other until turn three of the final lap, when Mees went too high and Halbert capitalized, earning third aboard his South East Harley-Davidson. Mees finished just off the podium in fourth aboard his Rogers Racing Harley-Davidson. Stevie Bonsey rounded out the top five aboard his Zanotti Racing Harley-Davidson.

AMA Pro Singles

AMA Pro Singles pole sitter Kyle Johnson earned the main event victory in a rout. On the start, Johnson coughed up the lead early, only to regain it again on lap four and never look back. Johnson's 6.271-second win margin aboard his Hot Rod Harley-Davidson Honda was the largest of his brief yet impressive career. "Oh man, the bike was feeling really great," said Johnson. "I actually didn't get off to the best start, I found myself behind a little bit at the beginning of the race but I was able to work my way up to the front. It was really nice to know I had some breathing room and didn't have to ride as hard as I could on the final laps."

Johnson's win was the second of his career. After getting off to a not-so-hot start in 2014, Johnson catapulted into fifth place in the AMA Pro Flat Track Pro Singles point standings win the victory.

Johnson's win was impressive, but the most intriguing component of the main event was the battle for second place. Kolby Carlile was able to outgun Davis Fisher by .046 seconds to steal the runner-up spot aboard his K.C. Cycle Helmet World KTM. Fisher's third place effort aboard his TJ Burnett Farms Honda was somewhat bittersweet, but the Warren, Ore., native's consistent start to the 2014 season has him sitting third in the AMA Pro Flat Track Pro Singles point standings thus far. Dylan Morin finished fourth aboard his Kawasaki of Simi Valley KTM and Ryan Wells rode his KTM to a strong fifth place finish.

Zanotti Racing Files Their Race Report on Riders Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. & Stevie Bonsey from the Springfield Mile I at Round 3 of the AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship

The California-based Zanotti Racing squad, the 3-Time AMA Grand National Champions ('79, 2010-2011) have released their race report for the Springfield Mile I round on May 25, which as most everyone knows now was the first Twins Series race of the season and the first race in decades that featured the big bikes sans fuel restrictors.

The team came out ready to do battle after a long off-season of race preparations and team shuffling. After losing long-time crew chief Ted McDermitt late last year, the team was still also in transition with long-time associate and first year Grand National rider Stevie Bonsey who was recruited mid-season after 2-Time AMA Grand National Champion Jake Johnson had parted company with the team mid-summer. And then within weeks of the end of the season, 3-Time AMA Grand National Twins Champion Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. was signed to the team after having been released at the end of the season from a seven year association with the Harley-Davidson factory race team.

From the get go, it was pretty obvious that the veteran squad had been doing some serious homework on their XR-750-based team, which was cemented on the track after one of the team's associates contacted us the evening prior to the event to fill us in on some of the 'behind the scenes' work that had been happening during the off-season in their west coast shop.

Last year's championship-winning crew chief, Dave Atherton, was aligned with preparing the bikes of new signee Coolbeth out of his Michigan-based shop, while Dave Zanotti and Steve Polk were hammering away on the XR-750s of rider Bonsey out of their San Jose locale. Dyno runs were made and the team had managed to find the perfect set-up for the wide-open expanses expected at what also the first mile event of the season, and horsepower figures-which were mentioned but were also mentioned as a 'no-no' to talk about-were at their peak for optimum performance on the 125mph straights at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. And in spite of what many expected with the loss of the restrictors, the five-decade old design of the alloy XR did not see action that would wind the motors so tight that dependability or endurance would be lost in a 25-lap National main.

However, just like in all forms of racing, luck also played into the overall factor on-track as the team had what could best be described as a 'book-end' day, with new rider Kenny Coolbeth (above, heading out for heat race #1 on the #2 Zanotti Racing/Burt Ives Honda/Moroney's H-D/Pint Motorsports-sponsored XR, with tuner Atherton seen standing along the fence in the right, rear of the shot with the black hat on) finishing in 2nd-place all-day long to the dominant machine of the event in Bryan Smith's #42 Crosley Radio Kawasaki. Coolbeth finished his heat, Dash for Cash and National main behind Flyin' Bryan in all three events, but within breathing distance to give the team big hopes for the season ahead, as well as taking the points lead heading into round 4 at the Knoxville Half-Mile next weekend.

On the other end of the bookshelf, team rider Stevie Bonsey (seen above, during rider intros for the Springfield Mile I with tuner Polk and the #80 Zanotti Racing/Classic Harley-Davidson/Top 1 Oil/K&N Filters-backed XR, along with team consultant/rider-coach/starter box man, former 7-Time AMA Grand National Champion Chris Carr) was not so lucky.

Although he just missed the Dash event by just over .7 second after finishing in 3rd-place behind heat #2 winner Jake Johnson and runner-up Brandon Robinson, what started off as a strong day unfortunately went downhill fast right at the halfway point of the 25-lap main event in Springfield, when Bonsey lost it going into turn 1 when defending AMA Grand National Champion Brad Baker accidentally took out his handlebars.

Bonsey and the team regrouped quickly for the restart on their back-up mount, ever as stout at their primary, but after advancing from the back on the restart nearly halfway through the field when he made contact with another rider, forcing him down and out for the rest of the day for what was eventually a 16th-place finish on the day. Fortunately, he was relatively unscathed in both mishaps and will be able to race another day, but he can definitely hold his head high knowing the type of movement he was able to make in the restart, albeit a quick end after such a great job of moving forward.

In retrospect, the Zanotti squad is poised to go for the rest of the season, in spite of two machines that kissed the dirt hard at Springfield and the overall picture is that they are definitely where they need to be in order to take on the ever-growing Kawasaki contingent in the five remaining mile events for the 2014 season moving forward. And with the solidity of this team overall their pursuit of another AMA Grand National Championship may not be too far off!

Check out their official press release below and don't be surprised to see Coolbeth back at the front again in the upcoming races and Bonsey regroup quickly to get his way back to the front where he surely belongs, as well. Round 4 of the season is coming up quick at the Knoxville Speedway in Iowa on June 15, and the first half-mile of the year could very well turn the tide back in favor of the long-time competitors from the Zanotti Racing team. As the saying goes, time will tell......

Zanotti Racing Springfield Mile Report

Welcome to the Zanotti Racing Springfield Mile report. Running a two man race team has proven to be very logistically trying and labor intensive. Many a 15 hour day was spent 7 days a week preparing for the inaugural mile of 2014. With help from Moroney’s Harley Davidson in New York and Classic Harley Davidson in Reading, PA the team was up to the task and the team arrived in Springfield on Friday before the race.

Sunday morning we rolled into the pits at the historic Illinois State Fairgrounds bright and early at 8am. The AMA Pro Racing had all the parking spots laid out prior to our arrival which made parking and unloading extremely easy and efficient. Tech inspection and pre-race preparations went smoothly and we were set for practice. Both Kenny and Stevie were in the first group to go out for practice. This proved to be the fastest session on the track all day. The track was ultra-fast. 33.5 seconds a lap was turned which is an average of 107 mph around the circuit! Minor adjustments were done to the bikes and we headed out for the first session of qualifying practice. Kenny Coolbeth was extremely smooth and fast ending the session as 4th fastest. Stevie Bonsey ran solid, 3 tenths of a second behind Kenny. Both riders in the mid 34 second a lap bracket as the track was slowing slightly each time out. With a few more minor adjustments we went out for the final 4 laps of qualifying. Both riders were fast only separated by 1/1000th of a second and only 1/10th of a second off the leaders pace. As the track was drying out it was tightening the pack. Kenny and Stevie sat in 5th and 6th respectively in that session with the top 10 separated by only 3/10ths of a second.

Being the first mile of the season the pits were packed with fans. Kenny and Stevie spent a hectic hour and a half signing autograph sheets and taking photos with the fans. After the fans were cleared from the pits both bikes were checked and double checked for the upcoming heat races and team owner David Zanotti deemed us race ready.

Kenny Coolbeth drew the first heat with his overall combined qualifying position of 4th. As previously stated the track was slowing ever so slightly and the first session was the fastest. The first heat was stacked with fast qualifier Bryan Smith, championship point’s leader Sammy Halbert, and current National Number 1 Brad Baker. Kenny fought to the front and proceeded to duel with Bryan Smith the entire 8 laps of the race, testing the power and limits of the XR-750, trying to see if a draft pass for the lead was possible. At the end of the race Kenny finished second a mere 5/100ths behind Bryan. They had, lap after lap built a comfortable margin over the rest of the field and earned a spot in the ever so important dash for cash.

Stevie’s heat race was next, also with some stiff competition. Stevie shot off the line in the lead closely followed by Jake Johnson. Jake got by and Stevie latched onto his rear wheel, reeling him in thru the turns and latching onto his draft down the straights. Mid-race Stevie made a mistake and was passed by Robinson and lost touch with Jake’s draft. Stevie finished in 3rd place, 8/10ths of a second behind Jake but turning a faster lap time in the process which boded well for the main event.

In no time they blow the horn to line up for the Dash for Cash. With the current point’s leader missing the cut for the dash, along with last year’s champion, this was an excellent opportunity for Kenny to make up ground on one, and create a gap to the other. This race truly is a dash. In the 4 short laps Kenny once again fought his way to the front in spectacular fashion. He finished a mere 1/10th of a second out of the lead but a healthy 8/10ths over the rest of the field, collecting 4 valuable points for the title chase. Curiously the track had been getting slightly slower as the day went on, but in this event the lap times actually dropped into the 34 second range again.

Ever so slight adjustments were made, strategy was discussed with both riders, and then the riders were left alone to their thoughts to prepare for the main event. Kenny lined up on the front row and Stevie on the second. After the introductions were done, the green flagged dropped and 18 riders roared to the first turn. Staying in the lead pack is imperative; maneuvering yourself to the front at the end is an art. Kenny had himself at the front of the race early on; leading some of the time, never lower than 3rd. Stevie had fought to the lead pack from his second row start and was content to stay in the leaders draft and see how this played out. On the 11th lap the lead group decided to push the pace a bit. Lap times went from the low 35s and high 34s to 34.5s and 34.3s. The lead pack of 7 riders dwindled to 5 with Stevie getting caught unaware as his next 2 laps were his fastest at 34.8 each but he had ever so slightly lost the lead draft. Kenny on the other hand had no trouble staying in the top three, tenaciously latched onto to the leader’s rear tire. At the completion of the 12th lap Brad Baker was drafting Stevie down the front straightaway and took his handlebar out going into turn one. Stevie went down in a heap, getting himself firmly planted in the air fence at over 120 mph. Stevie’s crash brought out the red flag. Miraculously the bike was OK and he was able to remount and line up for the restart.

Before the staggered restart, Chris Carr pointed out to Stevie that though he was at the rear of the grid, he was on the outside near the groove. He instructed him to put the tires on that rubber immediately and fight like hell in the first corner to get back in the lead pack. With 2 riders dropping out early Kenny was lined up 2nd and Stevie 16th. The light went green and the pack roared towards the first turn with Kenny in 2nd and Stevie racing past 8 riders. At this point as he was going around a rider for his 9th position improvement in a quarter of a lap a rider got out of shape and sadly Stevie hit him and went down again. He fell trying to pull off a very aggressive move, but in the end, a move that ended his day.

Another restart followed after they loaded Stevie and his mount and brought them back to the pits. Kenny once again was fighting for the lead on the restart. Lap after lap he rode with what can only be described as surgical precision. He was never more than 3 feet off the leader's rear wheel. It looked like a may come down to a 2 man race for the win. On the 20th lap of the scheduled 25 lap race another rider went down bringing out the red flag yet again. This was not a welcome event for our team.

With 5 laps remaining, this turned the race into another short dash, albeit with a staggered restart, but now bunching the pack once again. This is exciting for the fans but nerve wracking for the team. Kenny being the consummate professional and cool as ice proceeded to once again get a terrific start and plant himself firmly on the leader’s rear wheel. Coming out of turn four towards the checkered it looked as though he could draft by Smith for the win but he came up 4/100ths of a second short. Kenny ended the day on the second step of the podium.

Taking stock of our results this year, the team is guardedly optimistic, yet knows there is more work to do to improve. Dave Atherton brought two extremely fast XR-750’s for Kenny and he used every ounce of power they had. Steve Polk also prepared two very capable bikes for Stevie to ride.

Going forward, equipment and or power will not be an issue it seems. The lap times turned at Springfield were some of the fastest ever and the bikes were up to the task. Kenny leaves Springfield after 3 rounds in the books with the overall points lead in the title chase. He now has 2 podium finishes out of 3 attempts. Moving forward, 2 of the next 3 races are on ultra-fast half-mile car tracks. Both riders on our team thrive on those types of venues and we look forward to continued success in the near future.

Zanotti Racing Announces Signing of Top 1 Oil as Team Sponsor for 2014 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship Season

In a fresh announcement today from the team that is hot off of a 1-3 finish in round 2 of the 2014 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship at the Daytona Short Track II on March 14, 3-Time AMA Grand National Championship-winning team Zanotti Racing has signed Top 1 Oil as one of their leading sponsors for the 2014 season.

With new signee Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. taking his first short track win at Daytona last week since the indoor short track round in DuQuoin back in April 2011, and first full-year man and 2-time Grand National race winner Stevie Bonsey bringing home a solid 3rd-place finish, the Zanotti squad is off to a roaring start to the new season ahead. And with the bulk of the series coming up being in the Twins Series division, the racing is bound to get even hotter and heavier than what we saw in Daytona last weekend (which was pretty darn hot!)

In the shot above from round 8 of the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship season at the Indy Mile on August 17, the Zanotti team goes about getting rider Stevie Bonsey's #80 Zanotti Racing/RGR/Arai-sponsored XR-750s set for the first round of practice coming up at the Indiana State Fairgrounds-hosted event held over the last weekend of the Indiana State Fair and the big 6th Annual Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP event being held a few miles down the road at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Former crew chief Ted McDermitt, team owner Dave Zanotti and man on point Wayne Karcich can be seen in the background, while rider Bonsey and rider/coach and 7-Time AMA Grand National Champion Chris Carr relax before The Rolling Thunder Show takes to the track.

With now two riders under his umbrella to take care of after fielding a single-rider team for the last several seasons, team owner Zanotti now has twice the output in order to field what is always a competitive effort in the series, and with Top 1 Oil coming on board to help out, this should help to ease a little bit of the financial burden for one of the most dedicated team owners in the sport.

A big congrats to all of the guys on Team Zanotti, as we're looking forward to chatting them up some more come the Springfield Mile I round on May 25, and this is great news for these guys! Check out their full press release below to see all of the particulars as we all weather the break in racing between Daytona last week and the Memorial Day weekend kick off to what is truly the full racing season ahead.

AMA Pro Flat Track Pulls Out All of the Stops-& Restrictors-With Early Release of 2014 Technical Rules

In what amounts to a big change as well as an earlier than normal release, AMA Pro Flat Track late yesterday released the updated technical rules for the 2014 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship season. And the big news that will without a doubt will/should silence all of the bickering and complaining that has occurred for the last several seasons, sees the loss and complete removal of ALL restrictor rules/regs in the Expert Twins Series class effective for the new season ahead.

One of the most common complaints heard throughout the paddock and the track over the course of the last several seasons, and for that matter even dating back to what some consider the 'hey day' of flat track racing in the mid-late '80s when Honda was dominating the sport, has been the use of various size restrictor plates in order to level the competition playing field.  AMA Pro Flat Track opened up the allowable opening for the XR750 teams with the use of 32mm restrictors for the half-mile tracks and 33mm restrictors for the mile tracks for the 2013 season (with a special formula used for teams running larger than 750cc and up to 1250cc for other machinery), but the 2014 season will see the restrictors completely removed for all machines on both size tracks.

This will undoubtedly be met with applause, especially from the XR750 camp, many of whom have complained of being able to keep in the draft, especially on the mile venues, with the hot Kawasaki mounts. However, as one team owner mentioned to me several years ago, 'no matter what size motor you are running' or how much power that mount may be putting out, you still have to get it to the ground. And with the spec tire currently being used in AMA Pro Flat Track will most surely be the final and lasting, deciding factor in not only getting that power to the ground, but managing that tire wear, as well.

However, this will be a great step all around for all comers and all campaigners in The Rolling Thunder Show, whether it be the teams running the Triumph 955-based mounts, the Suzuki 1000, KTM 950/990s or the Ducati 1098/1100 platforms, as it will allow each of these manufacturers and team's engines to breath freely and move any and all guess work to tire wear and a more finely tuned suspension setting in order to harness that free-breathing motor and properly supplant it to the track.

In the shot above, Zanotti Racing crew chief Ted McDermitt pulls the K&N air filters off of the #80 Zanotti Racing/RGR/Arai-backed Harley-Davidson XR750 of rider Steve Bonsey after the end of practice at the Springfield Mile I on August 31 during round 10 of the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles Grand National Championship, in order to allow the AMA Pro Flat Track tech crew to measure the restrictor size for the day's events.

Also seen in this shot just behind Zanotti's McDermitt are the father and son duo of Dave and Kevin Atherton of the 2013 AMA Grand National Championship-winning Dodge Brothers Racing team of rider Brad Baker, Jared Mees' team working on removing the breathers from the #1 Rogers Racing team's XR, and one of the team cohorts from the Harley-Davidson Motor Company-sponsored #2 XR of rider Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. with the breathers removed and allowing a good look down the throat of the flat slide carbs on The King of Cool's factory mount.

There are a few other 'minor' tweaks that have been made to the new rulebook, but the leveling of the playing field with the loss or 'banning' of all restrictors in AMA Pro Flat Track competition for the 2014 season is the biggest move and change for everyone. And a big tip of the helmet to AMA Pro Flat Track for getting the rulebook out some five weeks earlier than what we saw in the release of the 2013 season rules in mid-December of 2012. Bravo guys!

You can check out the link below to the new rules as released by the folks on Fentress Blvd. in Daytona from late last evening below, as we get ready to 'weather' the cold winter months ahead while awaiting the release of the 2014 season schedule, reportedly being released 'very soon.'
