AMA Flat Track: Jake Johnson Talks Winning at Calistoga and Taking the Points Lead Heading to Pomona With Fight For Dirt Track's Tyler Porter

As team owner Dave Zanotti goes about swapping out the rear tire/wheel combination on the #1 Zanotti Racing/Schaeffer's H-D/Boughner Racing/Motion Pro-sponsored H-D XR750, the rest of the team goes about their regular duties while rider Jake Johnson relaxes before hitting the track again at the Springfield Mile II event on September 4.  Round 16 of the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series made it's annual Labor Day Weekend stop at the Illinois State Fairgrounds mile oval, and when all was said and done the Zanotti team of owner Dave, head tech Ted McDermitt (left side of shot) and former AMA Grand National competitor Mike Hacker (sunglasses, behind Zanotti) had come pretty close in getting the set-up right as Johnson came home in the 3rd spot to round out the podium behind winner Willie McCoy and runner-up Chris Carr.

The defending AMA Grand National Champion took the lead in the overall points standing last weekend after winning his 3rd National main event of the year at the Calistoga Half-Mile (and first Twins Series event win), to leave the penultimate round headed to the Pomona season finale with a four point lead over runner-up Jared Mees, and an eight point lead over third place man, Sammy Halbert (357-353-349.)

With just round 20 of the season left to go in the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series, The Champ has again put himself into the leading spot heading into the season finale.  Last year the same scenario transpired for the Zanotti team and rider Johnson, when Joe Kopp suffered mechanical ills at what ended up being the penultimate round for the 2010 season at the Canterbury Park event.  Johnson led by 10 going into the Arizona Mile II finale, and won the event outright to clinch his first overall AMA Grand National Championship by 20 points over runner-up Smokin' Joe.

For a man that is staring at the possibility of garnering his second AMA Grand National Championship in a row at next weekend's Pomona Half-Mile event, Jersey Jake is as laid back and carefree as can be-almost like he appears in the shot above.  Understanding the pressure of what leading and winning in the championship can be after last year's fine run, Johnson is the quiet warrior who lets his actions on the track do the talking.  With any given number of possibilities to win the championship against either of the remaining title contenders left in Mees and Halbert, letting it all fall together on the track is the best way for it all to be handled from Jake's perspective.

With 3 wins (Salinas & Springfield TTs, Calistoga), 13-top 5 finishes and 12-top 3 finishes, Johnson has had a stellar year by anyone's standards.  Although only garnering 2 wins on the season in the Dash events (Lake Odessa, Sacramento), the rest of his stat sheet looks mighty impressive as well: 14-total Dash events, with 8-top 3s to show for them.

Read on below as Tyler Porter from Fight For Dirt Track.com talks with the defending Champ about his win at Calistoga that vaulted him into the points lead heading into the Pomona Flat Track World Finals on Saturday, October 15!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tyler Porter from Fight For Dirt Track.com has been bringing us cutting-edge stuff from the world of AMA Pro Flat Track for several years now.  His weekly column, 'The InSlide Line' is a weekly stop for anyone wanting to get 'in the know' about the happenings in and around the AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship Series.

Earlier this week, Tyler filed this great report at his Fight For Dirt Track.com site with defending AMA Grand National Champion Jake Johnson, after Jersey Jake had taken the win and series points lead at the penultimate round of the season at the Calistoga Half-Mile event.

Thanks to Tyler for this great interview with The Champ!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FFDT: I'd say Calistoga went pretty well for you?

JJ: Yeah, it went real well. It started good, we
were pretty fast in qualifying, top 5 in the first 2
sessions, then in the last session we were a little
bit off, we tried a couple things and the track
changed up a little bit, it got just a little slick. We
ended up 2nd overall so when we were going out
for the heat race the throttle started hanging up
on my bike, it just wierded me out a little bit. A lot
of guys were having problems with it, because it
was so cold I guess. Everybody was having the
same problem in Minnesota too. I guess the cold
the weather or something, the throttles were just
hanging up. Call me a sissy I guess, but I don't like
to ride when the throttles are hanging up. I don't
know if it's going to stick a little bit or a lot, so I
just ended up jumping on my back up bike for the
heat race. Won my heat race but I felt like I
struggled a little bit. When I came in we got the
main bike fixed for the dash for cash. I was getting
crappy starts all day and just got a bad jump in the
dash and me and Sammy got together on the
starting line. We were both going for it, neither one
of us wanted to lift so we tangled handlebars and
we both just about went down off the start. We
were tank slapping and our feet were flailing and
when we finally got separated I was last going into
the first corner. I worked my way up to third, but
found some good lines for the main. We had some
good laps times so I was feeling good for the main
event. When we went out for the main, we got
another crappy start and I was 5th or 6th going
down the back straight away. By lap 5 I was in the
lead and that's when Jared went down. I peeked
back when the red flag came out and could see
that I had a little bit of a gap so I knew we were
fast and could win at that point. On the restart, I
think it was Sammy that nearly passed me going
into the first corner, but I was able to beat him
going into 1, put in some good laps and pull away.
I was actually able to relax a little during the last 5
laps. Pretty much every race this season where
I've been in the hunt for the win has just been just
a complete battle, a dog fight until the end. It was
nice to be able to peek back with 5 to go and be
able to breathe.

FFDT: Did you find anything wrong with your
throttle or was it just the weather?

JJ: I'm not really sure. My mechanics Ted and Mike
went through everything and checked them all out.
They loosened stuff up and everything was fixed,
it was good. I don't know if there was some dirt
in there or what the story was, but it has seemed to
be a common problem the last two weekends. I
think it may just be the cold weather. Maybe we
just got lucky and it freed up. Luckily we got it
fixed and didn't have to worry about it.

FFDT: Can you tell the difference between the
bikes when you are jumping back and forth?

JJ: Yeah, a little bit. We try for the most part, as
the day goes on make the same changes. Like, if
we change the gearing on one bike we change the
gear on the other just in case we have to get on it.
We try to get the suspension as close as possible,
but it's hard to tell without riding it. The bike I rode
in the dash didn't feel quite as good as my main
bike, but I hadn't been on it all day long. It was a
little different than the other one. Basically it is the
same, gearing wise and it had the second best tire
that we had on it, just stuff like that. You can have
two bikes identical, you could buy two brand new
CRF450's off the show room floor and do the
same stuff to them but one of them is going to feel
better than the other. The back up was fine though,
it got us through while we were working on the
other bike.

FFDT: Did you feel like this win was payback for
what happened in Brainerd?

JJ: A little bit. It was kind of payback for all the
twins races that we've gone to this year where
we've been so close, we've been so close at all of
them, well, or most of them. I figured sooner or
later it was going to be my turn. It's been tough.
Jared, Sammy, Kenny, Bryan, everybody has
really been on their game lately. Especially Jared
and Sammy. At Knoxville the points were tight,
all three of us were on the podium, in Brainerd
we were up there too, so it's been tough to make
up any ground really. We got a little bit of a gift
with Jared's situation over the weekend. We were
able to make up some big points and it got us back
in the hunt. Going into the race 18 points down, I
still had a shot, but it was a long shot. I couldn't
count myself out, but I didn't think it was going to
turn out the way it did even if I did win. It was
good, it put us into the lead going into Pomona.
Pomona is going to be tough. It's somewhat of an
unsure track. I've done decent there before. I've
ridden decent, but I didn't finish decent. The year
I was riding the Suzuki, I was battling Kopp for
3rd and ended up crashing and taking both of us
out. I rode there in 09 and kind of struggled but I
think we should be alright. I know Sammy is going
to go good there, Jared hasn't had a great past
there, but neither have I. It's going to be interesting,
that's for sure.

FFDT: With the points being this tight going into the
last round, does the pressure get to you?

JJ: I try to put it out of my mind. You can think
about it all you want but it's not going to help
anything. The way the dash for cash is, I could
easily be one point down going into the main event.
You can think about the scenario's, you know if this
guy wins I have to finish here, but you can't really
do any of that until the Dash For Cash is over. I
could miss the dash and Jared could go out and win
it or Sammy could go out and win it and only be 3
points down. You just have to take it as it goes. I
have to make sure that I'm in the dash and that I get
some points out of it. From there, just do the math
and figure out where I need to be. I try not to think
about it that way, just go out there and try to win
the thing. It's nice to know though, in the back of
your mind that if you are running in a certain
position and you know you need to pick up one
more spot, it gives you a little bit of motivation
instead of not knowing what is going on. I'm just
going to try not to think about it. Last year going
into Arizona I was 10 points up and I didn't sleep
for two or three weeks. We had Knoxville that got
rained out last year so I had a lot of time for it to
eat at me. I've been in the position before, Last
year the way it was it would have been worse to
have lost the championship, well, the devastation
would have been bigger for losing than the
excitement of winning it was. If I wouldn't have
won that thing, I would have just been crushed.
This year, I don't know, I have won a
championship and no one can take that. I want
to win it, don't get me wrong, but I also know
that it's not the end of the world if I don't. I'm
going to give it everything I've got it.

FFDT: So how about making it back to back in
Pomona?

JJ: Yeah, that'd be nice. That is what I have really
been lacking this year, is wins really. We have been
consistent, I think my worse finish this year has
been an 8th, so we've been on the podium a bunch.
Jared's got 5 wins this year, Sammy has 4, so that is
what I am lacking. I'm lacking in the win department.
We got a little bit of luck going on our side, and
that's the biggest thing really. Jared, Sammy and a
few others can win on any given day, so really it
comes down to the little lucky breaks that you can
get. It's like everything was against us a few
weeks ago, but things are starting to turn back our
way. We'll see how it goes.

FFDT: Going into the last round with the points this
tight, do you get worried about one of the
championship contenders using a desperation move
to win the race or title?

JJ: No, no, I mean, it's expected out of anyone
really. If it's coming down to the last corner, the last
lap for the championship, any one of us is going to
do what we have to do. I'm not going to go out
there and clean somebody out or anything, but if it
comes down to it, we will for sure be going for it.
I'm going to try to be smart about it. I'm going to
give it everything I have, but I don't have that win
or crash mentality. I still want to go into the off
season with all of my limbs attached. I'm still going
for it though, but I'll be smart about it. None of us
knows until it happens, until the situation is in front
of me, from there anything can happen.

FFDT: Best of luck!

JJ: Thanks!

AMA Flat Track Announces Harley-Davidson Insurance as AMA Flat Track Grand National Championship Title Sponsor

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jake Johnson's Zanotti Racing crew is hard at work on his #5 Zanotti Racing/Leo Vince/Tucker Rocky-sponsored CRF450 during a break in the racing action at the Springfield Short Track round of the 2010 AMA Pro Flat Track K&N Filters presented by Motorcycle Superstore.com Grand National Championship Series. Johnson would go on to take third later in the evening, and of course clinch the 2010 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship just over a month later at the year-end event in Prescott Valley.

Jersey Jake, who won round two at Daytona in March of 2010 on one of these machines, qualified fourth this afternoon behind fast qualifier Johnny Lewis #10, Sammy Halbert #7 and Henry Wiles #17. First full-year Expert Brad Baker qualified fifth on his #12 machine.

With K&N Filters bowing out of their support for The Rolling Thunder Show for the 2011 season after their great involvement in the sport for the 2010 season, it was announced this afternoon that Harley-Davidson Insurance would be taking over the title sponsorship reigns for this year, effective immediately with the opening round today on the Daytona Short Track at DIS. Instead of the K&N Filters header you see at the top of the number plate in this shot from 2010, 'Harley-Davidson Insurance' will now take it's place as the new header. And good news also comes in that H-D Insurance will ALSO UP THE YEAR-END PAYOUT for the points fund, doubling the purse for the year-end points fund to $100K.

This is great news for the newly-renamed AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series! Thanks H-D! Now, let's go racing. Heats are set to launch off tonight at 2000 EST, in about 15 minutes.

AMA Flat Track: 2010 AMA Grand National Champion Jake Johnson Ready for 2011 Season to Kick Off in Daytona

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jake Johnson stands at the ready next to his #5 Zanotti Racing Honda CRF450 just before the main event riders are announced for the Springfield Short Track round of the AMA Pro Flat Track K&N Filters presented by Motorcycle Superstore.com Grand National Championship Series on September 4, 2010. Jersey Jake went on to finish second in the final on his Zanotti Racing/Leo Vince/Tucker Rocky/S Designs-sponsored machine, 5.270 seconds behind event winner Henry Wiles on his #1 Jones Brothers Kawasaki. Wiles had captured his second Singles Series Championship earlier in the evening after winning the Dash, while Johnson went on to capture the big prize just a few weeks later in winning the 2010 AMA Flat Track Grand National Championship, while also winning the season ending round in Prescott Valley, AZ.
Johnson, who had a stellar year in winning one of the season opening rounds in Daytona, as well as the spring event on the Springfield Mile (to go along with his win at the final race of the year at Yavapai Downs) won the title over Joe Kopp, 289-269 points. He scored eight podiums on the year and eleven top five finishes along the way to add to his '06 and '08 Singles Series Championships.
With the 2011 season ready to kick off at Daytona on March 10 and 11, Jake will be one of the riders to keep an eye out for in just over two weeks, let alone for the whole season. He will be returning again to the Zanotti Racing team, and you can expect them to come into the new season with the #1 plate on their bikes ready to back it up. With the determination that Jake has and the great team behind him, don't bet against them for the new season!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship Series ready to launch a new season at Daytona in just over two weeks, 2010 AMA GNC Jake Johnson is geared up and ready to go along with his Zanotti Racing team to back up their super year in winning the #1 plate. With team owner Dave Zanotti joining his late Father, Mario, as the only father-son combination to win the coveted #1 plate in AMA Grand National Championship Series racing, look for this team to come out hard and strong this year when the first green flag of the season waves on Thursday, March 10. The series will also race on Friday, March 11 before heading to DuQuoin, IL. on April 16 for round three.

Johnson, who has proven to be one of the best all-around riders in the series, will be one of the riders this year (as he always is!) to watch throughout the season. His great bike control and ability to bring it home are traits that helped lead him to winning his first overall championship in 2010, and the team prepares some of the best equipment in The Rolling Thunder Show series.
Stu's Shots wishes the very best to the defending champion and team and we'll be watching from the sidelines as they try to make it two in a row in 2011!

AMA Flat Track: 2010 AMA GN Champion Jake Johnson Talks Racing and Hooking Up

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jake Johnson, the 2010 AMA Flat Track Grand National Champion, sits beside one of his trusty Zanotti Racing H-D XR750s in the pits at the Springfield Mile on September 5. Johnson, who also has two AMA Flat Track Singles Championships on his resume for the '06 and '08 seasons, won the title outright this year with a season that was filled with consistency, great riding, and zero machinery failures. His Dave Zanotti-helmed team put together bullet-proof machinery not only in the Twins Series, but in the Singles Series as well, propelling Jersey Jake to three wins, three 2nd place finishes, two 3rd place finishes and eleven top 5 finishes on the year, in what ended up being a 16 round season. Jake's final tally over series runner-up Joe Kopp was 289-269 points. Not bad numbers, you say!?
The '02 AMA Flat Track Rookie of the Year, who calls Franklinville, N.J. home, hooked up with the Zanotti team during the off-season, and they proceeded to start off the season at Daytona with winning on their 'to do' list, getting a 3rd place at the season opening race and then winning the second race of the year on the next night. Johnson added the Springfield Mile win in May to go along with his season-ending win on the Yavapai Downs Mile in Prescott Valley to close out a very successful season for him and the Zanotti Racing team. The team's only finish on the year that didn't garner a double-point pay-out was a very uncharacteristic 13th place finish at the Gas City Short Track round in June. Along the way, Jake and the team also won the Twins Championship and they were also awarded the Team Excellence Award, as well as Dave Zanotti and Mike Hacker being awarded Mechanics of the Year by title sponsor K&N Filters.
Congrats go out to Jake Johnson and the Zanotti Racing team for such a stellar year.
Great job guys, and we can't wait to see the new season roll off in just shy of four months!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jake Johnson, the newly crowned 2010 AMA Flat Track Grand National Champion, won three races this year on the AMA Pro Flat Track K&N Filters presented by Motorcycle Superstore.com Grand National Championship schedule. While riding for Zanotti Racing and splitting time between his Zanotti XR-750 in the Twins Series (which he also won to go along with the newly re-combined overall championship) and his Zanotti Honda CR450F in the Singles Series (where he placed 4th on the year), Johnson and the team were the model of consistency, bullet-proof machinery and rider skill and ability.

This was the first year since the end of the 2005 season that AMA Flat Track had combined the overall championship, and Johnson and the Zanotti Racing team had what it took to add to their long lists of accomplishments throughout the years in the series. Johnson adds the overall and Twins Championships to his '06 and '08 Singles Class Championships, and Zanotti Racing adds to it's legacy and winning ways in AMA Flat Track to be the only father and son-run team to win the coveted #1 plate in the top form of American flat track racing. Dave's father, Mario, teamed with '76 Rookie of the Year Steve Eklund to win the 1979 AMA Flat Track Grand National Championship.

Jake got a chance to talk with the great folks over at RoadRacerX.com at the end of the season, and you can check out the chat with him below as he talks about hooking up on the track and the difference between the cushion and the groove, among other things.

Congrats again go out to Jake and the Zanotti team for a stellar year!

Super job, and I can't wait to see them defend their titles in the 2011 season!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks to the great crew at Road Racer X.com for putting this chat together with Jake Johnson, the 2010 Champ!

AMA Flat Track: 2010 GN Champ Jake Johnson Reflects on His Championship Season with Zanotti Racing

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jake Johnson's #5 Zanotti Racing/Leo Vince/Arai/Tucker Rocky-sponsored Harley-Davidson XR750 sits inside the AMA tech area after a fine run home into fourth place at the Lucas Oil Indy Mile on August 28. Jersey Jake finished just off the podium at Indy, 3.057 seconds back from winner Bryan Smith on the #42 Werner Springsteen Monster Energy Kawasaki, in what was also Kawasaki's first win in AMA Flat Track Grand National Championship Twins Series Racing.
Johnson's stellar year in the series saw him come out of the box at Daytona in the second of two races for the season opening rounds, to win at the new stadium. Johnson and the team won again at Springfield at the Memorial Day Weekend mile event, and wrapped up the season by winning the season-ender in Prescott Valley, AZ. Throughout the year, Johnson showed his ability to bring it home in every race, and the team never suffered a DNF throughout the year, laying claim to a program that saw consistency and bike-prep as the groundwork for a very worthy championship season. Johnson's only finish outside the top ten in 2010 was a 13th place finish at the Gas City short track round in June. He won the title outright by a margin of 20 points, 289-269, to runner-up Joe Kopp and the Latus H-D/Lloyd Brother Ducati team.
Team owner Dave Zanotti adds to the legacy his father started in the '70s, when Mario Zanotti teamed with a young up-and-comer by the name of Steve Eklund, and won the '79 AMA Flat Track Grand National Championship. With Dave and Jake adding to that great feat from 31 years ago, Zanotti Racing is the only father/son duo to have won the coveted #1 plate in AMA Flat Track competition after over 50 years of racing in the series. Johnson, the 2002 AMA Flat Track Rookie of the Year, also won the '06 and '08 AMA Flat Track Singles Championships while riding for the American Suzuki effort.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In what was a stellar year for fans and competitors alike, the 2010 AMA Pro Flat Track K&N Filters presented by Motorcycle Superstore.com Grand National Championship season saw new winners, new competition and new faces in the series to add to the great turn around that the series is seeing. But when the year was done and said, long-time competitor Jake Johnson and the Zanotti Racing team took home all of the honors while doing so with one of the legends of the sport, the Harley-Davidson XR750. With all of the 'new' in the series for this season, the final say-so went to a machine that has been competing in the series since the early '70s, showing everyone that the 'iron-clad' alloy XR isn't quite ready for the museum as of yet, restrictors or not!

Teaming together in the off-season last year, Jake Johnson and Zanotti Racing formed the perfect match to win the big marbles in AMA Flat Track Racing, and in doing so also showed how strong their team and rider were throughout the season by taking home 3 wins, only one finish on the year outside the top ten, and zero DNF's due to rider or mechanical failure. Talk about a near-dream season.

The great folks at Motorcycle-USA.com and The Fast and Dirty.com have teamed up to bring us this great season ending video from the Yavapai Downs Mile in Prescott Valley, AZ., and we get a chance to see and hear from some of the racers during round 16 of the 2010 season. Jake Johnson takes some time to reflect on the season, and ultimately the #1 plate as he wins the race over Jared Mees, the defending AMA Flat Track Grand National Twins Champion, by a scant .004 seconds to go out on top and collect the 2010 AMA Flat Track Grand National Championship for himself and Zanotti Racing.

You can check out the season-ending highlights right here and hear Jersey Jake reflect on the run-up to the season ender, and the result of winning it all. Congrats again to Jake Johnson and Zanotti Racing for a great championship season. I can't wait for 2011!

AMA Flat Track:2010 Season End Awards For GNC Jake Johnson & Zanotti Racing, P.J. Jacobsen GNC Rookie of the Year

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2010 AMA Flat Track Twins and Grand National Champion Jake Johnson surveys the action on the track just before rolling out for final qualifying at the Springfield Mile on September 5. The new #1 for 2011 will be the third different number Jersey Jake has worn after having worn the #14 before being awarded the single-digit #5 for the 2o1o season in what is one instance of recognizing all past champions still competing in both the Twins and Singles Series, while still bringing the AMA Flat Track Grand National Championship back as the overall #1 for the 2010 season and beyond. Johnson had won the '06 and '08 AMA Flat Track Singles Championships while riding for Suzuki.
The Zanotti Racing/Leo Vince/Arai/Tucker Rocky-sponsored rider hooked up with the team for the 2010 season, spear-headed by Dave Zanotti, the son of Mario Zanotti, who along with Steve Eklund back in 1979 were the first privateer team in 16 years to win the coveted AMA Grand National Championship. The team won the overall AMA GNC making them the first father and son-run team to win the series highest honor. At the awards banquet, team members Zanotti, Ted McDermitt and Mike Hacker were awarded the K&N Filters Grand National Championship Mechanics of the Year award for their efforts in wrenching JJ to the crown, and the team was also awarded the Team Excellence Award.
Super effort by these guys for what they have done in 2010. Congrats go out to Jake Johnson and the entire Zanotti Racing team for their hard work in winning the 2010 AMA Flat Track Grand National Championship. Great job guys, great job!

P.J. Jacobsen sits on his #99B Moroney's/1-800-FAST HOG/Weiss Racing/Shoei-backed XR750 while talking with announcer Scotty Duebler after having won the second semi to gain a ticket to the National Main Event at the Lima Half Mile on June 26.
P.J. qualified for four National main events this year, with a best finish of 6th place at the May Springfield Mile, as well as a 7th at the Lucas Oil Indy Mile. He eventually finished 13th at Lima, and also finished out the season with a 9th place finish in Prescott Valley on October 9. He ended the season ranked 18th in the AMA Flat Track Grand National Championship with a total of 44 points. As a result of his fine year, P.J. was awarded the AMA Flat Track Saddlemen Rookie of the Year award at the season ending awards banquet on October 10.
After splitting his time while also running some AMA Road Racing events in the 2010 season for Celtic Racing, we hope to see much more of him in the AMA Pro Flat Track K&N Filters presented by Motorcycle Superstore.com Grand National Championship Series in the 2011 season. Congrats P.J. for your ROY award for the 2010 season. Great job!

To the winner go the spoils, so they say, and the season ending awards banquet for the 2010 AMA Flat Track Grand National Championship Series awarded the official #1 plate to Jake Johnson and the Zanotti Racing team in Prescott Valley on October 10. Although the big money isn't and hasn't been a part of the scene in AMA Flat Track for some time, unfortunately, there was still season-ending cash to be paid out to the winners and entrants of the 2010 AMA Pro Flat Track K&N Filters presented by Motorcycle Superstore.com Grand National Championship Series thanks to the title sponsors, K&N Filters, having come on board with the series at the end of May. With a points pay-out for the top ten in the overall point standings, cash and trophies were the norm for the day in Arizona.

Johnson and the Zanotti Racing crew took home a large portion of the year's payouts due to their winning the overall title, including the ceremonial #1 plate to go along with winning the 2010 AMA Flat Track Grand National Championship, and the team was lauded for their efforts with the Mechanic of the Year Award as well. As mentioned in a previous post, Kawasaki was awarded the Manufacturer of the Year Award for the first time ever, and they also won the Singles Manufacturer of the Year Award (in large part due to Henry Wiles winning four Singles mains this year at the Springfield TT and Short Track, the Gas City Short Track round and at the famous Peoria TT as well. Harley-Davidson won the Twins Manufacturer of the Year Award to also garner some of the glitter for their efforts in winning the Twins Class point standings and putting the XR750 up front and center again as it has been since the early '70s in AMA Flat Track racing.

And P.J. Jacobsen, who until this year had been spending most of his time road racing, attempted to qualify for six main events this year, making four of those, and finishing 18th in the season overall point standings with 44 points to garner the Rookie of the Year Award for the 2010 AMA Pro Flat Track season. We can only hope this young man wants to keep running in the series for 2011 and beyond, as he put on some good shows on the track this year on his Moroney's FAST HOG-sponsored XR to keep the fans on their feet. Whatever he may end up doing he has a very long and bright future ahead of him at the young age of 17. We hope to see him back next year for some flat track events. Great job this year, P.J.!

You can check out some of the official stories below from the season ending race and banquet, with some great shots from those on-hand to highlight the end of this great season of racing in the AMA Pro Flat Track Series for the 2010 year. And a big shout-out and thank you to K&N Filters for coming on board with AMA Flat Track to put up the money for the season-ending pay out. Bravo to K&N and we hope to see them back on board again next year as well. Thanks guys!

Jake Johnson Wins The Battle & The War at AMA Flat Track Arizona Mile 2010 Finale in Prescott Valley

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jake Johnson can be seen talking with some other racers while his team owner Dave Zanotti talks with his daughter Amanda in the background at the Springfield Mile last month. The #5 XR-mounted and Zanotti Racing/Leo Vince/Arai/Tucker Rocky-sponsored Jersey Jake stole the show today at Yavapai Downs in the season finale of the 2010 AMA Pro Flat Track K&N Filters presented by Motorcycle Superstore.com Grand National Championship race by beating out Jared Mees by .004 seconds to take the win and the 2010 AMA Flat Track Grand National Championship.
JJ topped the points for the year in the Twins class as well as the overall championship standings, and beat out runners-up Joe Kopp and Mees by 20 points, 289-269. Great job and super season Jake!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jake Johnson, the former 2-Time AMA Flat Track Singles Champion, can now add Overall AMA Grand National Champion to his resume as he took his #5 Zanotti Racing XR750 home to the win at the Budweiser Racing Arizona Mile in Prescott Valley, AZ. today. In beating out Jared Mees to the win in the main by .004, Jersey Jake also claimed the overall points championship and is now the 2010 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Champion.

Jake had a great day in winning his heat and coming home 5th in the dash to add to his overall point total going into the day. His final points lead over runners-up Mees and Joe Kopp was 289-269 as the two ended tied in points in the year, with Kopp taking the tie breaker via his three wins this year. Mees had a very consistent year in ending up third in the standings without a win in the 2010 season.

The 2010 AMA Pro Flat Track K&N Filters presented by Motorcycle Superstore.com Grand National Championship Series season saw Jersey Jake take three wins for the season including his second round win on the Daytona Short Track, as well as his win on the Springfield Mile in May. This is the first year since the 2005 season that AMA Flat Track will recognize the overall champion in the sport, whereas since the '06 season points and championships have been rewarded in both the Twins and Singles classes. Although each class will be recognized for the year, the overall champion, Jake Johnson and the Zanotti Racing Crew, will wear the coveted #1 plate in the 2011 season.

Congratulations to Jake Johnson and Zanotti Racing for their stellar 2010 AMA Flat Track Championship season. Great job guys, take a bow!
