AMA Pro Road Racing Announces Roadracing World Young Gun of the Year Award for 2014 Season

In an announcement out of Daytona Beach the other day, AMA Pro Road Racing announced the return of the Roadracing World Young Gun of the Year Award for the 2014 season. The award honors the youngest of the pro racers in the premier road racing series in America and names the top riders 18 years old or younger who compete and stand out in their respective series throughout the season.

In the shot above taken from the Stu's Shots archives, four riders appear that would have likely at one time or another during their careers been recognized as 'young guns' for their abilities and accolades either earned or 'to be earned' in their respective pro racing careers.

From the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course round of the AMA 250 Grand Prix Championship series event in July-August of 1992, there were four riders who stood out in the series that season that didn't win the title, but were either past or future champions in several major series throughout the world (future 2-Time World Superbike Champion Colin Edwards II won the '92 AMA 250 GP title over this host of fine and talented men.)

(L-R) Rich Oliver is shown on the #97 Wayne Rainey Racing/Otsuka Electronics-sponsored Yamaha TZ250 as the pack gets ready to head out for the series' main event of the weekend at the Camel Super Cycle Weekend presented by Dunlop AMA Pro Road Racing round.

Oliver went on to win five AMA 250 GP Championships to garner the all-time win record of 71 wins at the end of the 2003 season, the series' last before the two-stroke championship was eliminated from the North American road racing championship schedule. Oliver also went on to become undefeated in the 250 series in three seasons, '96-'97, when he won 20-straight races, and in the series' final season of 2003 where he led every lap of the 12-race series swan song. Oliver also claimed a Formula USA Championship and a WERA 250 National Championship to add to his illustrious resume before retiring from the sport to become the owner of the Rich Oliver Mystery School, one of the preeminent riding schools in operation in the United States.

Jimmy Filice, shown on the #1 Commonwealth Racing/Camel/HRC-sponsored Honda RS250, won the previous season's 250 GP Championship while riding for the L.A. Motor Works team, one of three of his championships won in the two-stroke class throughout his career. In winning his final championship during the 2001 season, Filice bested Oliver by just one point to claim the crown in what was a series for the ages as the two battled tooth and nail throughout the year. The 1981 AMA Pro Flat Track Rookie of the Year won a total of 29 National series races throughout his racing career, spread between the AMA Grand National Championship and 250 GP Championship, and was inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame in 2000. Most fans will probably remember Filice's grand win in the 250 World Championship round at Laguna Seca in 1988, riding as a fill-in rider for world championship-winning tuner Erv Kanemoto.

Kenny Roberts, Jr. was Oliver's team mate during the 1992 season, shown on the #25 Wayne Rainey Racing/Otsuka Electronics-backed Yamaha TZ250. KRJR as he is now famously known, as well as being the first-born son of 'The King', Kenny Roberts, Sr, won the 2000 500cc World Championship while riding for the Suzuki team, in the most recent season that Suzuki has been able to win the premier road racing class in the world. Roberts won four races that season and stood on the podium nine times while starting from the front row 13 times throughout the year.

And last, but surely not least, shown just behind Roberts, is the late Randy Renfrow, who won three premier road racing championships before his early and unfortunate demise from this earth in August of 2002. Renfrow is shown on a Ruben McMurter-backed Honda RS250 (partially obscured.)

The very last of the AMA Road Racing Formula One Champions (1986), Renfrow also won the AMA 250 GP Championship in 1983 and the AMA Pro Twins Championship in 1989 on a Commonwealth Honda RS850, built around the all-conquering Honda RS750 that dominated the AMA Flat Track Grand National Championship in the early-late '80s, and headed up by Louisville, KY's Martin Adams, who went on to campaign Renfrow in Honda's return to the AMA Superbike class in 1990. Renfrow won a total of 17 National championship races throughout his career, including a win on a Commonwealth Honda RC31 in the AMA Superbike Series at Willow Springs in 1990 as a member of the Honda factory team. Renfrow was just inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame in October of last year.

AMA Road Racing: Indianapolis Motor Speedway Vance & Hines XR1200 Test Round Up As DiSalvo Spoils The Party, Kevin Schwantz In the House & Local 'Boy' Makes Good

Jason DiSalvo talks with one of the crew members from his #40 Latus Motors Racing/RSRaceCraft.com/FMF/Speedymoto-sponsored H-D XR1200 team before heading back out in the afternoon session to spoil everyone else's fun during the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's hosting of the AMA Pro Road Racing Vance & Hines XR1200 Series tests on Friday, August 19.  DiSalvo, who is currently sitting in the 3rd spot in the 2011 AMA Pro Road Racing Daytona SportBike Series standings after winning three rounds on the season, was persuaded to run the IMS rounds of the XR1200 Series by his team owner, George Latus.

Team mate Chase McFarland can be seen in the background strapping on his helmet as he prepares to go out on his #19 Latus Motors Racing XR1200.  McFarland has competed in the series for the full schedule and sits in the 8th spot in the point standings.

Not showing up until Friday's session, the diminutive New York State resident used the morning session's 25 laps to work his way into the 2nd spot on the charts behind then-leader Steve Rapp.  It only took him 7 laps in yesterday's session to leave the test with the fastest times on the charts.

DiSalvo knows Indy after competing in the Moto2 class last year, and put on a clinic in working his way into the 9th spot in the 40-rider strong field.  In the process, it re-opened people's eyes to the young man who had just earlier in the season parted ways with his World Supersport team.  Over the course of the off-season, he signed with Latus, to ride the team's Ducati 848EVO in the Daytona SportBike Series, and promptly went out and won the controversial Daytona 200 (147 after the long red flag.)  Winning a couple of more races after Daytona, DiSalvo has fallen off a couple of times to remind us he is still human, and has been putting on a great show in the ultra-competitive class in the AMA Pro Road Racing Series.

Next weekend should be a great show in the AMA Pro Road Racing Vance & Hines XR1200 Series races.  With two seperate, points paying events scheduled for Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28, the loud and proud American Iron will grace the legendary IMS facility, and hopefully also along the way help bring in more paying butts to the seats.  In a series that has seen some very competitive racing in just it's second year of existence, being able to see these Hot-Rod Harleys at IMS will be a great experience added into the weekend's long list of great events.

And if he has his way like he did in testing, Jason DiSalvo and the #40 Latus Motors Racing XR will be up at the front.  Or darn close to it!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am not worthy.

Getting to spend the day checking out the AMA Pro Road Racing Vance & Hines XR1200 Series test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, hanging out with my buddy and homeboy, Larry Lawrence from Cycle News.com and The Rider Files.com, and in the process being able to meet '93 500CC World Champion, #34 himself, Kevin Schwantz, in the process.  At the end of the day, they probably should have had to put me in an oxygen tent...at the very least.

One of the all-time ground breakers in World Championship Road Racing in the late '80s/early '90s, Schwantz, along with other legends that followed Kenny 'The King' Roberts to Europe for the 500CC GP wars, helped to set the bar for road racing around the world when it came to European's eyes in terms of American's involvement in the world's road racing circuits.  Finally winning the championship himself in the '93 season, his #34 competition number is the only number retired in road racing in the now MotoGP World Championship.

Kevin is in town for his Kevin Schwantz School going on at IMS today and tomorrow, along with his Mom and Dad, as well as former local racer Rueben Frankenfeld, who is teaching at Schwantz' school over the weekend.

As we were driving about the huge facility, we made a dash down what during the MotoGP weekend are the vendor areas-garages for the car teams, converted for the big 2-wheel weekend for display purposes.  While checking out an ultra-sano '01 Suzuki GSX-R, that carried a personalized 'KEVIN' license plate, we happened to look over, and there was The Champ himself.  Ever so congenial--most likely because he knew Larry-HA!-he was very gracious and friendly in extending a hand shake and a few minutes of 'shooting the bull' while his family was helping get the area set up for the school.

Talking generally about the drive up from Texas, the drought and crop losses in his home state, and his beautiful nine-month old dog, Schwantz appeared the everyman instead of the World Champion he is.  It was truly a pleasure to be able to share the time with someone who I have watched in awe over the course of the last 25+ years thrill the he..out of me with his ability to wrestle a racing motorcycle around a road race course, and to think that even just for a moment, I was shooting the sh.t with one of my long-time racing idols.  MasterCard doesn't have squat on me, because it was truly priceless!

Thanks #34!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Long-time Indianapolis/Indy West Side resident Gene Burcham is exploring a different phase in his years-long association with racing motorcycles.  The former AND current WERA standout, and AMA Pro Road Racing competitor, is now into at least his fourth decade of racing motorcycles by my account.  Having won numerous races and championships in the WERA Series over the course of the last 30+ years, he is now getting his lifelong chance to ride on what is literally his home track.

Unless you've grown up around the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway as Gene has-or myself and at least half-a-dozen of my closest and former riders/racers/fans and fanatical adrenaline heads have-telling someone about being able to race around the over 100 year old track just doesn't seem to get them to understand.  And especially so, since all of us grew up in the times when there was but one little race going on at the sprawling West 16th Street facility.  And chances of anyone of even the BEST of the bunch getting to jump in an open wheel Indy car were all but pretty much slim, and virtually, NONE.

And then along came the MotoGP Circus to Indy in '08, and now the 2nd year AMA Pro Road Racing Vance & Hines XR1200 Series, which for the first time in history will be racing on the 2.5 mile road race course at The Brickyard during events over the course of next weekend's 4th Annual RedBull Indianapolis MotoGP round.

And that's when the lightbulb came on for Gene, where next weekend he will get his chance 'to live the dream' as he is going to be able to ride his #94 Burcham Racing/ERMCO Electric/Dreyer Motorsports-sponsored Harley-Davidson XR1200 in front of a Worldwide crowd and compete at the track that has loomed over his backyard for his entire life.

With the local and long-time Dreyer Motorsports, from Indy's West Side, jumping onboard to help out his efforts, Gene turned his first wheel at Indy this last Thursday while taking part in the two-day tests over both Thursday and Friday.  After running the Mid Ohio XR event last month, Gene was able to help get the bike dialed in closer to his liking, and spent the test methodically working his way up the charts.  Bettering his times along the way while running a total of 61 laps, at the end of yesterday afternoon's session he had worked his way into the 11th spot on the charts.

Gene can be seen in the shot above sitting on the far left and checking times out on his Touchpad while the rest of the Burcham/Dreyer crew go about getting the #94 machine ready for the afternoon session, and for the REAL test next weekend.  Good luck Gene, and have a great time while you are doing it!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Steve Rapp confers with one of his crewmen on the #5 Parts Unlimited/Vance & Hines-sponsored H-D XR1200 team in between some action on the track.  Rapp ended up the 2nd fastest over the two-day test, beat out by .255 seconds by Latus Motors' Jason DiSalvo in the final Friday afternoon session.  The Rapper was credited with running 70 laps over the course of the four test sessions, and showed his usual consistency on the machine-or any for that matter-in ending up with a 5-4-1-2 tally in overall times.  Currently 2nd in the points to Chris Fillmore, Rapp could very well use the doubleheader at IMS and the season-ender as a springboard to catching Fimmore in the championship.

Michael Barnes #34 Drag Specialties/Vance & Hines XR1200 sits just behind Rapp's #5 machine, with Michael Beck's #60 Vance & Hines/Harley-Davidson/J&P Cycles-sponsored XR just behind, as other members of the crews discuss their results from Friday's AM practice and work on game plans for the PM session.  Barnes sits in the 4th spot in the standings, with Beck laying 5th.  Rapp's two wins on the year are just behind Fillmore's three with the two events at Indy next weekend and the season-ender at NJMP over Labor Day Weekend left on the 2011 schedule.

DiSalvo Quickest as AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Class Completes Testing at Indy

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (August 19, 2011) - After two days of testing at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway, AMA Pro's Vance & Hines XR1200 riders are ready to go at next weekend's Red Bull Indy GP, August 27-28. The AMA Pro test marked the first time Harley-Davidsons have run at the Brickyard since 1909, bringing two American classics together after more than 100 years.

AMA Pro Daytona SportBike rider Jason DiSalvo, who made his XR1200 debut today with Team Latus Motors Harley-Davidson, declared himself one serious class rookie by notching the quickest time ahead of series regular and championship contender Steve Rapp (Parts Unlimited). DiSalvo ran a 1:58.342 to Rapp's 1:58.597, the duo comprising the only two riders able to crack the 58-second range today. Tyler O'Hara, running under his own banner, was third quickest.

"The track seemed to come in really well there toward the end of the day," said DiSalvo. "For the race, this track is just going to get better and better. We've been working on some stuff with the tires, but the spec Dunlop tires we run are lasting pretty good and it's only going to get better. I love riding the XR1200. I'm actually riding my teammate, Chase McFarland's, backup bike and I haven't changed one thing -- spring rates, anything -- from the time I got on it. All in all it's been really good. It's a blast to ride, and fun. It's going to be a great show for the fans out here and I can't wait to see thirty-plus Harley-Davidson XR1200s line up in front of a packed house here at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nelson.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Championship points-leader Chris Fillmore ran a limited number of laps today but declared himself fit to protect his overall lead. "We're ready to go," said Fillmore, "and I wanted to rest my shoulder a little. It's been a good couple of days and we feel pretty good about this race. After that, we'll look forward to the final race at New Jersey, where I'll also be riding my KTM AMA Pro SuperBike."

Michael Beck, who ran well all weekend, added, "This is a great facility. It's my first time [riding] here; I came here to see MotoGP a couple of years ago as a spectator, but I always wanted to ride across those bricks, and to actually get to do it is a great experience. The surface is super-flat and super-smooth -- it's a great place to ride. It is a little slick, but with it being so fresh and so new we just haven't done enough laps around here yet. We're getting prepared for next weekend with our XR1200, and I'm looking forward to it."

Nelson.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A total of twenty-two Harley-Davidson XR1200s tested at the Speedway, and a number of additional riders are slated to be join them for the inaugural AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 double-header during the MotoGP weekend, pushing the number of expected entries to more than thirty.

Vance & Hines' Terry Vance reflected on the significance of the upcoming races, saying, "It's a great thing to see the class out here and the number of bikes we're going to have on the grid for the MotoGP weekend. I'm just really happy everybody has come together with Harley-Davidson, Vance & Hines, and AMA Pro to make all this happen, culminating in the upcoming event. We only started this class a year and a half ago, and we have thirty-three guys entered for this race, so we're doing really good. There aren't too many young racing series in the United States that are actually growing, and to look at the Harley-Davidson class and say it's made leaps and bounds is an understatement.

"I never really thought about racing here at Indy," Vance continued, "but the opportunity became available this year when Mel Harder from IMS said it was a possibility. David Atlas from AMA Pro got it put together, and we started talking to Harley-Davidson and Vance & Hines and made it a reality. It's a nice moment for us, and I'm really excited to see the XR1200s on the track."

Multi-time AMA Pro Road Racing 250GP Champion Rich Oliver was on hand over the course of the two-day IMS test to help out rider Gerry Signorelli with set-up and riding tips on his #88 Kuryakyn/Bob Fier Racing/Racing For a Wish-sponsored XR1200.  Oliver, who today spends time teaching with his Rich Oliver Mystery School teaching riders the PROPER way to ride a racing motorcycle, looked as lean and mean as he did back in the day walloping the 250GP classes he reigned over in AMA Pro Road Racing.  This is another of the super nice guys around the paddock who always brings a level of enthusiasm just being there, outgoing and friendly, and willing to lend a hand-or a voice, as it were.

For a man who used to TOTALLY dominate on the track, it was great to see this side, again, off the track.  To put things into perspective, my friends and I when attending AMA Road Races back in those days, ALWAYS had a running bet as to who would place 2nd-because we knew if Oliver showed up (and he very seldom was injured or would ever miss a race), that that would be where the race was, as the man would just annihilate the competition.

Historic First Day of AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Testing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway Wraps Up

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (August 18, 2011) - The AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 class took to the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway circuit for the first time today in preparation for the upcoming Red Bull Indy GP, August 27-28. Using the 2.621-mile, 16-turn "MotoGP" track layout, AMA Pro Road Racing hosted two open practice sessions for the series' newest division.

Local rider Gene Burcham (pictured at bottom) was the first man out at 9:21 a.m., living out one of his longtime dreams in turning the first laps of the Harley-Davidson class' debut at the famed "Brickyard."

"It's very important for me from the standpoint that I grew up here in Indianapolis," said a beaming Burcham after the morning session. "Being around Indianapolis where you have auto racing all the time ... my whole life I've always raced motorcycles, and not being able to participate in any events here made it tough. I wanted to go out first; I kept asking the officials, 'How much longer?' The history here at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway -- you walk into this place and you're just in awe."

Eighteen specially prepared Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson XR1200 motorcycles circulated in the afternoon session, and it was championship-points-leader Chris Fillmore (Bruce Rossmeyer Daytona Racing GEICO) who ended up fastest overall with a time of 1:59.577. Fillmore -- who also topped the morning session -- was the only rider to break into the 59s.

"It was kind of limited this afternoon," said Fillmore. "We went out to try to diagnose a problem with the bike -- just a funky noise I'm hearing that I don't want to hear. I don't think I did more then ten laps in the second session, but I'm nursing a sore shoulder so it was kind of good that we didn't do so many laps. I really want to tie up this championship, and if we can get a win or two here, we'll be solid for New Jersey."
Other notables included 2010 AMA Pro SuperSport Top Gun Champion Tyler O'Hara, second-fastest in the morning session, followed by Northern Ireland's Jeremy McWilliams, the 2010 British XR1200 champion. McWilliams, who's back for his second appearance in the AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 class following his triumphant win at last year's season finale in Alabama, said, "It's been a steep learning curve again, trying to work out all the intricacies of the XR1200, but I think we're somewhere in the ballpark. It's not ideal -- we can see that Fillmore has got the hammer down and we've got a big gap to bridge -- but we're using the same tire and motorcycle and we shouldn't be that far away. At the end of the day we kind of lost our way a little; not a disastrous day, but you know what [we racers] are like -- we can always be better!"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Teammates Steve Rapp and Michael Barnes also posted top-five times in both sessions and were enthusiastic about the new venue. "It's cool," said Rapp. "I've never been here before, but the track is really cool. We had a good day. We're working on getting more traction like everybody else ... it's going to change when we come back for the race, but we're doing the best we can for now."

In the only incident of the day, Kyle Wyman experienced a mechanical problem during the second session that necessitated a stoppage to recover his RMR Bruce Rossmeyer Daytona Racing XR1200. "The day was going pretty good," said Kyle. "We were trying a whole bunch of different stuff ... but in one of the sessions I had an issue with the bike going into some sort of neutral between gears, and the motor quit. We'll put in a fresh motor for tomorrow, and hopefully it will be better. The track is a nice little challenge and I think the layout caters to an American style of racing."

Testing will continue tomorrow with another pair of sessions, during which 2011 Daytona 200 winner and XR1200 rookie Jason DiSalvo will get his first look at Indianapolis Motor Speedway since he contended the Moto2 event at last year's Red Bull Indy GP, finishing ninth in the international field.

Steve Rapp #5 on his Parts Unlimited/Vance & Hines H-D XR1200 is shown going through the turn 13-14 area at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during day two testing for the AMA Pro Road Racing Vance & Hines XR1200 Series.  Rapp attended both days of the test, always sitting in the top 5 of the time sheets, and progressively moving up into the fastest time of the AM test session on Friday.

In the end, only DiSalvo spoiled his party for the two-day tests after Friday's PM session was complete, and Rapp leaves the sessions with a good base level to work with for next weekend's doubleheader at the World Capital of Racing at IMS.  The Rapper currently sits in the 2nd spot of the overall championship standings in the XR1200 class, 30 points behind current leader Chris Fillmore (167-137) with just three events left on the season (2 at IMS and the season ender at NJMP over Labor Day Weekend.)

AMA Road Racing & Dunlop Tire Set for Daytona Test on March 17 & 18

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anthony Gobert leads a field of stellar competition on his way to the event win riding the #95 Vance & Hines Ducati 996 during the AMA Superbike Championship final at Road America on June 14, 1998, as part of the Coca-Cola Super Cycle Classic weekend round in Elkhart Lake, WI.
Following closely early in the race are Miguel Duhamel on the #17 American Honda RC45, team mate (and eventual '98 AMA Superbike Champion) Ben Bostrom on the #11 American Honda RC45, Jamie Hacking on the #92 Yamaha Motor Corp. YZ750, Doug Chandler on the #1 Muzzy Kawasaki ZX-7R, Aaron Yates on the #20 Yoshimura American Suzuki GSX-R750 (partially hidden), Tom Kipp on the #16 Fast By Ferracci Ducati 996, and just coming out from under the old Billy Mitchell Bridge the #97 Yamaha Motor Corp. YZ750 of Rich Oliver.
In this shot, all riders but Tom Kipp are Dunlop Tire-shod, with the FBF team running Michelins this particular year. With Dunlop being the sole control tire provider in the new age of AMA Road Racing (along with many other spec tire series running throughout the world now), the English tire giant will be plenty busy come Monday and Tuesday of the upcoming week in supplying tires to over 50 riders for the test scheduled at Daytona. With the extra load that the banking sections at Daytona puts on tires (even in these days of Superbike-Lite tuned motors) tire testing is a must in order to ensure participant safety as the stresses put on the machines and getting the power to the ground are extreme.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What used to be the annual trek to Daytona Beach for the AMA Road Racing and Dunlop Tire tests is finally set for the first of next week, as AMA Pro Road Racing released this press release late yesterday on what the particulars will be for the two day event. The World Center of Speed at Daytona International Speedway will play host to the stars of today's AMA Road Racing Series as tires will be put to the test to better help get a gauge on the newly-paved track for the March running of the AMA Superbike Championship round and the Daytona 200.

AMA Pro Road Racing also notes that the Live Timing and Scoring feature will be available while the tests are being run, and taking a look at it today they have done a VERY nice job of updating this feature for easier viewing and better stats to keep you up to date. Great job AMA Pro Road Racing!

You can check out the official release here thanks to the new and improved AMA Road Racing. With just under two months until action kicks off for the 2011 racing season in the U.S., this will be a great primer to help keep us Midwesterner's a little warmer and fueled up in the off season!

AMA Road Racing Lineup Set for 2011 Dunlop Tire Test at Daytona International Speedway

Daytona Beach, Florida--Friday January 14, 2011

AMA Pro Racing and Dunlop Tire will be conducting a two-day test session at the newly resurfaced Daytona International Speedway on January 17 and 18. All four AMA Pro Road Racing classes will be participating in the first open test for the AMA Pro Road Racing competitors. A limited test was conducted this past December by Dunlop Tire and successfully paved the way for the first big open test of 2011.

An impressive 53 rider entry list has been set for the two-day test with 17 AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike riders, 15 AMA Pro Daytona SportBike riders, 10 AMA Pro SuperSport riders and 11 AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Series riders.

The test will begin at 12:00 noon on Monday, January 17th and run until 5:00 p.m. and then the riders will have a full day on the track on Tuesday, January 18th, running from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

Highlighting the entry will be 2010 National Guard SuperBike Champion Josh Hayes with his Yamaha now sporting the coveted Number One plate. He will be joined by 2010 Daytona SportBike Champion Martin Cardenas, making his National Guard SuperBike debut on a Team M4 Suzuki. Also testing for the first time at Daytona in 2011 will be Tommy Hayden, Blake Young, Chris Ulrich, Geoff May, Chris Clark and others.

A number of riders will be making their debuts on new team or equipment combinations including Ben Bostrom, Larry Pegram, Eric Bostrom and the aforementioned Cardenas. Rejoining the AMA Pro series in 2011 is Roger Hayden.

The series will also be welcoming back Kawasaki to AMA Pro Road Racing for this year's Daytona round, the exciting new project that was announced earlier today will see Eric Bostrom riding the iconic green Kawasaki Ninjas at Daytona in both the SuperBike and Daytona SportBike classes with the Team Cycle World Attack Performance program.

Larry Pegram has made an equipment change, riding a BMW in this year's series.

Ben Bostrom will join Roger Hayden at the Jordan Motorsports team in a complete rider change for the team. Hayden will be riding the National Guard Suzuki and Bostrom will be aboard the famous number 23 Jordan Suzuki.

In the AMA Pro Daytona SportBike category, 15 riders will be testing the new racing surface. 2009 Daytona SportBike Champion Danny Eslick will be getting his first look at the new track surface and he will be joined by a number of new rider team/equipment combinations as well, including Dane Westby riding with Team M4 Suzuki, Taylor Knapp moving to Vesrah Suzuki alongside Cory West, and P.J. Jacobsen riding a Ducati for Celtic Racing with technical support from Fast by Ferracci. The series will also see the return of Jason DiSalvo, riding with Team Latus Motors. AMA Pro 2010 SuperSport Young Gun East Division champion J.D. Beach will be making his debut in the Daytona SportBike class aboard the exciting new Kawasaki entry alongside Eric Bostrom as part of the Team Cycle World Attack Performance program with Kawasaki.

2010 AMA Pro SuperSport race winners Elena Myers and James Rispoli headline the 10 SuperSport bikes that will be testing at Daytona, getting their first look at the new asphalt, the second resurfacing in track history and the first since 1978. Also running in SuperSport will be Eric Stump, Stefano Mesa, Miles Thornton and Michael Corbino among others.

The AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Series, which debuted last year in June at Road America, will be taking to the Daytona highbanks for the first time. Bolstered by another healthy addition to the prize money fund by Harley-Davidson, the test will see a strong 11 Harley-Davidson XR1200's take to the track next week. A number of familiar names will be riding the big twins including Michael Barnes, Kyle Wyman, Paul Schwemmer, Chris Fillmore and Clinton Seller. Making a welcome debut in road racing will be AMA Pro Flat Track star Joe Kopp with Team Latus Motors and he will joined by Chase McFarland on a second Latus XR1200. AMA Pro 2009 SuperSport Young Gun West Division Champion Ricky Parker will also be testing a XR1200.

Following the earlier limited testing this past December, Dunlop Tire engineers will be on hand to closely monitor the performance of the various new combinations. The previous test was quite successful with the new surface receiving many complements from not only the AMA Pro riders that participated but also from the other categories of motorsports that have tested on the amazingly smooth new surface.

The AMA Pro teams will return in March for the opening rounds of the 2011 season with the Daytona 200 Week activities beginning March 5th with the Daytona Supercross event. The AMA Pro Flat Track events at the DAYTONA Flat Track are scheduled for Thursday, March 10th and Friday, March 11th. The AMA Pro Road Racing activities begin Thursday, March 10th and the closing race of Bike Week this year will be the famous Daytona 200, which will be run during the day on Saturday, March 12th.

Live Timing & Scoring from the Dunlop Tire Test will be available for the duration of the two-day test at http://live.amaproracing.com.

Happy Birthday to Steve Crevier From Stu's Shots!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Steve Crevier bends the #14 Smokin' Joe's Team Honda RC45 through the carousel at Mid Ohio during a practice session for the AMA Superbike Series annual trek to the Lexington, OH. track in the summer of '97. Crevier was probably better known in his home country of Canada then here in the States, though he was undoubtedly one of the more popular riders in the paddock during his years of competition in lower North America. Back home he garnered six Canadian Superbike Championships ('89 on a Yamaha, '91-'93 on Kawasakis, '00-'01 on Honda RC51's), not to mention his four Canadian National Sport Bike (600) Championships and his three Canadian Open/750 Production Championships. He also won the '98 AMA 600 Supersport Championship here in the U.S. while campaigning GSX-R600's for Team Yoshimura Suzuki.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Steve Crevier on the #14 Yoshimura Suzuki TL1000 twin is seen going into the turn 11 area while qualifying for the AMA Superbike event at Mid Ohio in July of 1999. Crevier was teamed with Ohio's own Larry Pegram during the '98-'99 seasons on the big twins, while team mates Mat Mladin and Aaron Yates were teamed on the GSX-R750s. Crevier won the '98 AMA 600 Supersport Championship for the team while riding GSX-R600s and won the Mid Ohio event in '98 three events before the end of the season to help seal up the championship over Team Muzzi Kawasaki's Doug Chandler.

Mat Mladin on the #66 Team Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R750 leads the Yosh TL squad of Larry Pegram on the #72 and Steve Crevier on the #14 through the carousel at Mid Ohio during AMA Superbike final action in July of '98. Rich Oliver on the Team Yamaha YZF-750 #97 machine is seen bringing up the rear of this pack. Suzuki team mate Aaron Yates is long gone on the #20 GSX-R750 and captured the event final.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can see the almost-ever present smile on his face through his helmet opening as Steve Crevier chats with his mechanic just before the start of the Mid Ohio AMA Superbike final in August of '92. Crevier rode for Two Brothers Racing (Craig and Kevin Erion) and campaigned Honda RC30s for the team alongside team mate Fast Freddie Spencer during the '92 season.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Team Muzzy Kawasaki ZX7-based #14 machine of Steve Crevier cranks a big wheelie after winning the pole for the one-time AMA Superbike event at Gateway International Raceway (just over the river from St. Louis) in the hottest event of the year--and maybe the decade--in August of '95. Crevier campaigned the Rob Muzzy machine while also competing in the AMA 600 Supersport Championship during the '95 season.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Steve Crevier is one of the easiest going, and most animated individuals to ever hit the AMA Road Racing scene, and he is celebrating his birthday on Friday June 18, and Stu's Shots justs wants to tip the helmet to this great racer and all around fun guy.

Crevier, who currently resides in Maple Ridge, BC, CA., was born in 1965, and competed in the AMA Road Racing series for over a decade starting in '92 (at least that's when I started seeing him around the U.S. races) for teams including Two Brothers Racing, Team Muzzy and the Smokin' Joe's Honda team. While campaigning Team Yoshimura Suzukis in '98 and '99, he won the '98 AMA 600 Supersport Championship (while also winning the '98 Mid Ohio round of the series). He added that championship to go along with his six Canadian Superbike Championships, four 600 Canadian Championships and three 750/Open Production Canadian Championships. Can you say winner?!
One of the more animated people on/off the track, very rarely have I ever seen the man at a race without a big smile on his face and laughing and carrying on about something jovial. And Crevier never fails to perform on the track, especially with his race-ending stoppies and smokies and wheelies. Never a dull moment when he is near or on the track, it is a pleasure to watch him get it on while racing and while on the cool off lap! The man is a 3-ring circus in and about himself with his antics, and he's always shown the crowd a great time.

Stu's Shots wishes Steve a very Happy Birthday and wants to thank him for all of his years of on-the-edge competition and for showing the fans a great time.
And thanks for taking the time to sign a bunch of my pictures over the years, as well. It's always been and always will be a pleasure!
