AMA Pro Flat Track: Lima Half-Mile to Host Test & Tune on June 9

The Allen County Fairgrounds, host of the Lima Half-Mile, will again be running a test & tune for riders in the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles Grand National Championship season this coming Sunday, June 9.

As was announced by AMA Pro Flat Track today, the track will be open to teams and riders who wish to utilize the facility in preparation for the upcoming Ohio National Championship round of the 2013 season coming up on Saturday, June 29 in what will now be round 4 of the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles Grand National Championship season (due to the fact that the original round 4, the Springfield Mile I was postponed to the Labor Day weekend because of inclement weather.)

This will be the second test & tune of the season after the Stockton Half-Mile hosted a session back in late April for the riders and teams wanting to acclimate themselves for round 3 of the season.

You can check out the full press release below from AMA Pro Flat Track to get all of the particulars for this weekend's session.

AMA Pro Flat Track: Waters Auto Body KTM Team to Field Steve Murray in Twins Series, Adds Ryan Wells for Pro Singles Class

Dave Waters, owner and team manager of the Waters Auto Body 'Project K' KTM AMA Pro Flat Track team, checks out the action on the track as riders Jeremy Higgins #82 and Steve Murray #51 get ready for their first practice session at round 4 of the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season at the Springfield Mile I on May 27.

The team has retained Murray to campaign the #51 KTM North America/Waters Auto Body Racing/Bell Helmets/Arlen Ness-sponsored KTM LC8-based Twins Series mount for the upcoming 2013 season in what will be his second year with the team, while Higgins will be stepping aside for the year after riding for the team the last three seasons.

Rider Ryan Wells tries to cool off while the Iowa-based Weirbach Racing team goes about getting the #94B Weirbach Racing/General Engineering/Barnett/Spectro-backed Honda CRF450R ready to go for round 5 of the 2012 AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship season at the Lima Half-Mile on June 30.  In spite of missing out on five rounds in the 2012 season (Daytona Short Track I and the last four rounds of the season), Wells, a former AMA Horizon Award winner, still finished the year ranked as the 7th-place rider in the 'feeder' Pro Singles Championship class.

As was announced this week, Wells will be hooking up for the 2013 AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship season with fellow New York residents, Dave & Rhonda Waters, to campaign the Pro Singles class aboard their Waters Auto Body machines.

You can check out the full press release below as we wish the Waters Auto Body team and riders Steve Murray and Ryan Wells good luck for the upcoming 2013 season as we look forward to seeing them hit the track this year!

WELLS TO “FLY” UNDER WATERS AUTOBODY/PROJECT K RACING BANNER

February 11, 2013 -- Albion, NY

Dave & Rhonda Waters are proud to announce their support of Flyin’ Ryan Wells to the Waters Autobody/Project K Racing Team for the 2013 Pro Singles Series.  Ryan has always shown the drive and determination required that it takes to become a championship rider and it is our pleasure to be able to help this young man and his family strive for the Pro Singles Championship in 2013.

Ryan Wells, the 2012 Daytona short track winner, has shown us that after being injured mid-year when he was not able to achieve the success he had aimed for that he has learned, grown and worked hard to overcome some of the obstacles that stopped him from attaining that goal.  He has been training all winter and we have seen that first hand.

Ryan Wells is shown taking the checkered flag on the #94B Weirbach Racing Honda at round 2 of the 2012 AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Series season at the Daytona Short Track II.  Wells will be riding for the Waters Auto Body team in the 2013 season.  Photo courtesy of the Waters Auto Body AMA Pro Flat Track team.

“Dave & I have always tried to help the riders in our area excel in the sport.  In keeping with that tradition, Wells is a natural fit and we are excited about the future of the team and all the possibilities.  Our thought is Ryan & Steve will compliment one another with each other’s experiences and bring a friendly yet competitive atmosphere.”

Ryan had this to say regarding the team, “I am very excited to be working with the Waters Autobody/Project K Racing team as I feel we will communicate and work together well as a team.  I also feel having Steve Murray as a teammate will be a great learning step for me on and off the track.”

Piloting the KTM’s for the AMA Expert Twins season will be the sole pilot Steve Murray for a second year.  Jeremy Higgins has decided to curtail his race schedule for the upcoming season and dedicate more time to other aspects of his personal life.

“Dave and I would like to express our gratitude and thanks to Jeremy and the Higgins family for the past three years.  Jeremy & Jack have given so much input over the years that have helped our team to continually make changes to bring the KTM’s closer to the goal of making mains week in and week out.  We can never thank them enough for all the hard work, long hours and lasting memories that were made and we wish them the best for 2013.”

AMA Pro Flat Track Rider Spotlight on Waters Auto Body KTM Rider Jeremy Higgins

Round 4 of the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season saw the Waters Auto Body KTM team socializing in their pit area during the break in the on-track action at the Springfield Mile I event on May 27.  The New York State based team had an impressive set-up for the fan walk part of the program, with two of the team's bikes on display along with their riders, and the rest of the team on-hand to talk to the fans and show-off their impressive fleet of KTM LC8-based Twins Series mounts, which the team has obviously benefitted from with the factory backing of KTM North America.

In the shot above, back row you can see team patriarch Dave Waters, Jack and Michelle Higgins, and Rhonda Waters.  Sitting at the table talking with the fans are riders Jeremy Higgins #82 and new-to-the-team for the 2012 season, Steve Murray #51.  One of the team's techs (who I apologize for not having his name) looks over the surroundings on the right side of the team's awning.  The team had a steady flow of fans checking out their line-up during the fan walk and throughout the day overall.

Out front sit the teams massive-looking KTM LC8s, Jeremy's #82 and Steve Murray's #51, both of which are sponsored by KTM North America/Waters Auto Body Racing/Bell Helmets/Arlen Ness and Silkolene Oils.  Both machines have been re-worked since the 2010 and 2011 seasons, most noticeably with newly re-routed exhausts and new paint schemes, among other subtle changes since last season.

The team is getting much closer with the addition of KTM North America this year of making more of the Twins Series National main events, which was evidenced in both riders' top-37 showings in practice and qualifying at the Illinois State Fairgrounds mile oval.  With a tough field of competition, neither Higgins or Murray made the main in the first Twins Series event of the year, but showed great improvement throughout the day's events to help propel them further along in the year of making the show on a regular basis.  In all fairness to both, Higgins had suffered from a fractured wrist in the previous night's TT event at the Multipurpose Arena, and it was Murray's first full-day of competition on the new-to-him LC8 after having ridden XR750s for the last couple of seasons.  With Higgins in his third year with the team, and Murray's veteran leadership, 2012 could be the year that we see the KTM team in a National main more often.

I got a few minutes to talk with the enthusiastic team at Springfield on May 27, and in this shameless self-plug shot of me shaking hands with the head man in charge at the Waters Auto Body KTM North America team, Dave Waters.  It was really a pleasure to talk with them for the few short minutes we had, but they are a great bunch of hard-working folks to be around, and have obviously done a super job of putting a great looking team together in the process of having a good time doing it.

The team is looking forward to the rest of the 2012 season, and they are sure to improve this year as the season goes on, and with the factory backing of KTM North America things are really looking up for the new year.  Waters Auto Body KTM team photo provided by Rhonda Waters.

A big thanks to the Waters Auto Body KTM team for taking time out of their very busy day at Springfield to talk with Stu's Shots, and we're looking forward to seeing more out of this great group of folks in the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season.  Thanks guys and as always, good luck this year!

AMA Pro Flat Track had their rider spotlight on the Waters Auto Body KTM team's rider, Jeremy Higgins #82 this week.  You can check out their piece on Jeremy here:

AMA Flat Track: Waters Autobody KTM/Project K Racing to get KTM Backing

Jeremy Higgins' #82B Waters Autobody Racing/Power Sports Institute/Arlen Ness Leathers/Bell Helmets-sponsored KTM LC8-based Twins Series mount sits in the Waters Autobody Racing pit area at round 14 of the 2010 AMA Pro Flat Track K&N Filters Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season at the Springfield Mile II on September 5.  The rookie Expert would go on to put the KTM in the field at the Canterbury Park, MN. and Yvapait, AZ. II mile events at the end of the season, earning his National #82 which he wore during the 2011 season.

Higgins and team mate Chad Cose split time on the KTMs and Suzukis during the '10 and '11 season, which seemed to hold them and the team back in overall results.  Cose announced over the off-season he was starting his own team, Chad Cose Racing, and the Waters Autobody team added Kansas-based rider Steve Murray to their 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season line-up.

Murray and Higgins will now concentrate solely on development with the KTM LC8 Twin motor for the 11 Twins Series events scheduled for this season.  Waters announced they will be putting the Suzukis on the backburner for the time being, allowing them to concentrate further efforts into the big KTM.  And with yesterday's announcement that KTM North America will be helping the team out with sponsorship, it should be a big help to everyone on the New York State-based outfit.

You can read the full press release below on the great news ahead, and you can see Jeremy Higgins #82 and Steve Murray #51 carrying the Waters Autobody KTM livery at the first Twins Series event of the season in 22 days, at the Springfield Mile I on May 27.

KTM Announces 2012 Waters Autobody/Project K Racing AMA Pro Flat Track Expert Twins Sponsorship

Release Courtesy of KTM North America, on Behalf of Team Waters Autobody/Project K Racing:

MURRIETA, Calif. (May 3, 2012) – KTM Motorsports is pleased to announce its sponsorship of Waters Autobody/Project K Racing for the 2012 AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Expert Twins division.  The current team riders are Jeremy Higgins and Steve Murray.

Team owners, Dave and Rhonda Waters, have been working diligently to establish a KTM presence in the realm of flat track racing since the team’s inception in 2008.  Being a fledging privateer team among so many well established has proven to be a challenge, but with KTM’s assistance, Waters is confident that the durability and performance of the LC8 motors will be a key factor in the quest for the Grand National Championship. The water-cooled, 4-stroke, 75° V-Twin arrangement is used in the 2012 990 Adventure, 990 Adventure R and 990 Supermoto T.

New York native and team rider, Jeremy Higgins, has been instrumental in developing the flat track machines for the past several years.  He is joined by seasoned veteran Steve Murray from Kansas City, MI.  Murray has the knowledge and experience to provide necessary feedback to further develop the LC8 powered machines.  Dealership support will be provided by Scott PowerSports, Inc. from Coopersburg, PA.

Brad Hagi, Vice President of Sales for KTM North America, Inc. remarked,  “KTM is very excited to work with the Waters Autobody/Project K Racing Team this season.  We see the amount of hard work they put into creating a successful flat track racing team and we are happy we can help assist their program and are proud to be a key sponsor to their 2012 racing efforts.”

The Waters Autobody/Project K Racing Team will make its 2012 debut at the first AMA Pro Flat Track Expert Twins round at the famed Springfield Mile at the Illinois State Fairgrounds on May 27, 2012.

AMA Flat Track: Waters Auto Body/Project K Team to Develop KTM Further in 2012 Twins Series Season

The Waters Auto Body Racing team's mounts of #49 Chad Cose and #82 Jeremy Higgins sit in the team's pit area during round 16 of the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series at the Springfield Mile II on September 4.  Cose's Suzuki SV650-based mount sits alongside the KTM 950/990 LC8-based mount, as do Higgins' #82 machines in the back of the shot.  Team owner Dave Waters can be seen overlooking his machinery in the rear of the shot.

Cose was able to put the Suzuki in the main earlier in the season at Lima, carding a 16th place finish, while fill-in rider Gerit Callies was able to take the KTM-based Twins effort to a like-result at the season-ending round at Pomona for one of his provisional rides in the Twins Series after campaigning the Pro Singles Series this season.

The team has decided to put the Suzukis on the back-burner for the upcoming 2012 season, concentrating solely on the KTMs, along with retained rider Higgins and new signee Steve Murray #51, and also hooking up with Boughner Racing to help with their suspension needs  The full press release can be read below.

With the rules in AMA Pro Flat Track being said to hold true into the 2012 season, the team has a good base to work with on the KTMs going forward.  Having some of the nicest looking equipment in the pit area coupled with getting some more development work done with the KTM should help them get over the hump in getting the big Twin into National mains on a regular basis and being able to get the power to the ground that the big orange-and-black machines produce.

We wish them all of the best and will be glad to see the WAB KTM team back at it in the AMA Grand National Championship for the 2012 season ahead!

Waters Autobody/Project K Racing Changing it up in 2012

From a Press Release Issued by Waters Autobody/Project K Racing:

ALBION, N.Y. (December 19, 2011) - Coming off of 2010 with some great finishes and strong showings, we thought we had turned the corner and momentum was on our side. However, 2011 did not turn out to be the year the Project K Racing/Waters Autobody Racing team had hoped to have. Many things contributed to a less than stellar season and it was time for the team owners, Dave & Rhonda Waters, to reevaluate where things were going and what changes needed to happen to go forward into 2012.

One thing that was agreed upon after the final race in Pomona was to park the Suzuki’s. The Suzuki's had become a distraction and had taken away the focus from our original goal. That goal being, to put another brand on the box of the highly dominated Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship class and our weapon of choice was the KTM 950/990’s with their dependable and reputable LC8 power plants. The final California race was less than kind to our riders and equipment and it was time to get back on track.

Many other dynamics played into the decisions but one thing had been plaguing the team since the start. The LC8 motors had more than enough power but getting it to the ground and through the corners was always a huge issue. The bikes loved cushion tracks and hauled on big miles, but on hard packed half-miles, the handling flaws became more prevalent. Back to square one, get some fresh ideas and start over with the basics.

Many great builders had tried to help but one in particular stood out. While in Sacramento, Marty Lewis from Lazer Racing struck up a conversation with Dave regarding the problems that the riders had been experiencing. Numerous conversations later, it was determined that a new chassis would be built by Lewis from San Leandro, California.

We have a great crew and some even better sponsors but we struggled with set up and needed to make some serious changes. We needed a person willing to do the homework necessary to work with the new chassis design and power plant combination.

One name kept coming back into the conversation, and after discussing at length our mission, it was decided to that Mike Boughner of Boughner Racing, located in Tawas City, Michigan would be our guy for suspension.

Boughner had this to say regarding the collaboration on the team, “I’m sure I can be an asset to your program and would look forward to the challenges of working with your KTM's.”

But certainly the most exciting change has to do with the core of the team. We are extremely proud to have Steve Murray joining us to be Jeremy Higgins teammate in 2012. “Murrdizzle” as he is affectionately known on the circuit, has the experience needed to give the Waters Autobody Racing team important feedback required to make things happen. Steve, like his teammate Jeremy, is very 'hands on' and both riders opinions will be paramount to take us to the next level of competition.

Murray 26, originally from Grand Blanc, Michigan, was a regular on the circuit with the renowned Michigan Mafia crew. He currently resides in Kansas City, Missouri and has an Associates Degree in Website Design from ITT Tech & a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from Cleary University. Steve has fielded his own race program with success but Waters Autobody Racing feels we can give both riders the support and opportunities to achieve the results they desire with this team and with the addition of our new sponsors.

Steve Murray: "I'm really excited to be joining the Waters Auto Body Racing team for the 2012 Season and riding their KTM Twins and having Jeremy Higgins as my teammate. I'd like to thank Dave and Rhonda Waters and all of the team’s sponsors for the opportunity. Developing the KTM's will be a task but I'm confident that Jeremy and I can get Dave and crew the appropriate feedback to be contending for podium positions."

We are pleased to have Steve Murray and both Lazer Racing & Boughner Racing on board for 2012 and are excited about the possibilities that they both have to offer.

We would also like to thank our existing sponsors that are back on board for the 2012 season:

Bell Helmets, Arlen Ness, Motion Pro, Saddlemen, Silkolene Oils, Vortex, K&N Filters, Durelle Racing Wheels, Rekluse Clutches, Spider Grips, RLJ Race Engines, RK Excel, Leo Vince Pipes, D&D Power Sports, Matto Cycle, Power Sports Institute & Hollink Honda.

A special thank you to the following individuals for the support over the past seasons, Jack & Michelle Higgins, Chad & Norm Cose, Steve Fortunato, RJ Overholt, Guy Ruger, Brian Schultz, Yve & Will, Mike Owen, Staci & Jenna Waters, Mia & Chew, the AMA Pro Flat Track crew, KaTeM and various other families and riders of the Western New York race circuit.

In the spirit of the upcoming holiday and race season, we feel truly blessed to have such a wonderful program and many exceptional people contributing and are looking forward to a great 2012.

AMA Flat Track: 1st Time Milestones in 2010 Season

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 2010 AMA Pro Flat Track K&N Filters presented by Motorcycle Superstore.com Grand National Championship Series season saw only one first-time winner on the year, but that didn't make the monumental effort any less important than what it was for not only this rider, but for the series itself as well. Steve Bonsey took the #80 Johnny Goad/Alpinestars/Arai/Dodge Brothers-sponsored H-D XR750 to his first win in the series' first race in Northern California in over 12 years.
At the Calistoga Half Mile event at the end of July, Bonsey started the day off strong timing in second in practice, qualifying in third overall (in a field of 32 riders), and taking 2nd place in the 3rd heat race of the day to punch his ticket to the main event. Heat 3 winner Sammy Halbert, 3rd place Jared Mees, and 4th place Henry Wiles made things pretty honest for Bonsey in the heat. He also managed to score one point bringing it home 5th in the Dash for Cash. In the main, Stevie worked his way through the field to beat the likes of Halbert, Jake Johnson, Chris Carr and Jared Mees to win by 1.176 seconds and put his name in the record books as a first-timer on the top of the podium in AMA Flat Track GNC Racing.
After having been road racing in Europe until the end of the 2009 season, Bonsey was expected to get a ride in the new Moto2 World Championship Series with Kenny Roberts for the 2010 season. The one-time prodigy of The King, who hails from Salinas, CA. (home to other notables such as Wayne Rainey, Doug Chandler and the late Ricky Graham) lost that ride when sponsorship dollars failed to appear for Kenny and the team. But as a result, the AMA Flat Track Series and it's fans were elated to see the youngster campaigning one of the legendary Harley XRs for one of the tuning legends in the sport, Johnny Goad.
Bonsey earned his National number at the Springfield TT in May of '09, and rode his first mile event the next day at the legendary Illinois State Fairgrounds mile oval. For 2010 he would wear the #80, ditching the 'Y' from his rookie campaign season.
Although he wasn't able to duplicate his great run at Calistoga with another podium on the year, Bonsey still finished 12th in the points in the AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship Series with 81 points. He also qualified for eight other events on the year including his 6th place finish at the Springfield Short Track over the Labor Day weekend, and his 7th place finish on the Yavapai Downs Mile at the end of the season. And although we wish him the very best in the coming future, we sure hope that 'best' is in the AMA Flat Track Series!
The attached shot shows Steve Bonsey in the Dodge Brothers pit area at the Springfield Mile on September 5, where Stevie brought the #80 machine home in the 10th spot in the main event.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With the rules for AMA Pro Flat Track in the 2010 season having been set to allow several other manufacturers to run in the Expert Twins Series alongside the long-standing H-D XR750 prototype, the season saw several new entries in GN Twins main events that were either first-timers to the show, or first-time winners. The Lloyd Brothers team with rider Joe Kopp managed to put the icing on the cake for their efforts in May with the big Ducati 1098, and at the Lucas Oil Indy Mile at the end of August we saw the breakout win with Bryan Smith at the controls of the Werner Springsteen Monster Energy Kawasaki.
Somewhat overshadowed by these events were the efforts of Rookie-Expert Jeremy Higgins on the #82B Waters Auto Body/Power Sports Institute/Arlen Ness/Bell-sponsored 'Project K' KTM 950-based team. Jeremy set a major milestone in the series (and for his team!) by putting the big KTM in the main events at both the Canterbury Park and Yavapai Downs races at the end of the season, giving Jeremy and the KTM their very first points in an AMA Flat Track Grand National Championship Twins Series event. Higgins earned his first-ever ticket to a Twins main event with a fine ride into 3rd place in heat 2 at the Canterbury Park Mile, and came home 12th in the final to earn his National number for the 2011 season. He also finished 10th in Prescott Valley, where he had to come off the back row in the 25 lap final event, after having qualified for the main via a 5th place finish in the only semi for the day. Team mate Chad Cose on the #49 KTM 950 also put the team's other machine in the main at the season-ender on the Yavapai Downs Mile, where he finished 13th on the day, and also making history for KTM and AMA Flat Track for having two representatives in a Twins event. Higgins finished the year in the 29th spot in the overall point standings with 16 points, based on his year-end results.
A very fine effort by Jeremy and his family-run and operated team for the year! It is a major undertaking to take on anyone in any major racing series, but to do so with a manufacturer that is new to the series is great for the sport. And from the shot attached of the team at Lima in June (you can also see Cose's #49 Waters Auto Body Suzuki sitting in the rear of the shot) you have to appreciate the looks and layout of these fine machines, as they are visually stunning. The picture really doesn't do the looks of these well-prepared bikes any justice. Great job Jeremy and Company, and we're looking forward to seeing more in the 2011 season! Once this young rider and team completely come together in the Twins Series, look to see more of them in more mains in the coming season.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
J.D. Beach had an extremely busy year in motorcycle racing during the 2010 season. Competing full-time in the AMA Pro SuperSport East Road Racing Series, he won eight events while competing on the Rockwall Performance YZF-R6, and had wrapped up the overall East Series title after the VIR round in early August. In the AMA Pro Motorcycle Superstore.com Pro Singles events, he qualified for six events, winning four rounds including the Peoria TT and the Lucas Oil Indy Mile while competing on his #95C Red Bull/Top 1 Oil/Rockwall Performance/
Alpinestars-backed Honda 450. And to wrap it up, Beach jumped to the Expert Class for the Springfield Short Track round the weekend after Indy, and in his very first appearance in the premier AMA Pro Flat Track K&N Filters presented by Motorcycle Superstore.com Grand National Championship Series, managed to put his #95C Craig Rogers-backed Honda 450 on the podium with a great run into 3rd place behind winner Henry Wiles and runner-up Jake Johnson.
Beach's past accomplishments include running the Red Bull Rookies Cup alongside the MotoGP World Championship Series in 2008, where he finished the season ranked 16th in the overall standings. Learning the high-speed tracks along the way surely helped J.D. as he also jumped on a Rogers Lake Racing-backed XR during the Springfield Mile the day after his first Expert Class podium, and managed to bring it home in the 12th spot in the veteran-filled main event.
In the shot shown, Beach is sitting in his pit area at Springfield several hours before putting it on the podium in the Expert Singles final. He was being interviewed at the time by the tv crew on hand to film for Mav TV. Next to his pit area was his team mate for the weekend, #21 Jared Mees.
With the lure of road racing looming on his future, getting to see J.D. at least run a few events in 2010 was wonderful, and the personable young man has a very bright future ahead of him no matter where he goes and what he races. Obviously, we hope he stays in the AMA Flat Track Series for at least part of the time to shine that big smile around the circuit, let alone showcase his talents on the dirt tracks. Great year J.D.!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With the 2010 AMA Pro Flat Track K&N Filters presented by Motorcycle Superstore.com Grand National Championship Series celebrating a magnificent year in terms of attendance, competition and turn-around in the sport, there were many stories to be told for the year. Obviously Ducati's big win in May on the Yavapai Downs Mile leading off the season, and then
towards the end of the summer seeing the Kawasaki wins at Indy and Springfield were the 'big' break-out stories of the year.
But along the way, there were many other 'first time' events and happenings that also helped to define the great turnaround in AMA Flat Track racing. I've only touched on three of those events for the season, knowing there were many more. These were the one's (other than what we have talked about since the end of the season, that is) that also helped shape the great year that the series has had. (For that matter, I would love any/all suggestions from readers to add to the list, or just to write and read about through the off-season. So if you are reading this, and want to add to the mix of what you think would be a good read here, by all means drop me a line and a suggestion to help us all get through the winter months!)
So join me in congratulating these, and all the entrants and participants in the AMA Flat Track Series, for a year, and a job well done. Here's looking back on 2010 and looking forward to the 2011 season!

Here are a few links to check out on Jeremy Higgins from the #82B Waters Auto Body/Power Sports Institute/Arlen Ness/Bell-sponsored KTM 950-based team. This was a monumental undertaking in setting up the big KTM for AMA Pro Flat Track, and along with Ducati and Kawasaki coming into this great sport (and winning, in their cases) is another fine example of the machinery available under the current rules in place for the series.
Jeremy putting the bike in the main in Minnesota and he and Chad Cose both putting the KTM 950 in the main at the season-ender in Prescott Valley were HUGE for the sport, let along the team! This is the kind of story that is bringing AMA Flat Track Racing back to the forefront in terms of helping to put more paying butts in the seats as well as getting the word out on this great sport. Excellent job by both Jeremy and Chad this year!
Here's the link for Jeremy Higgins' Team Project K Racing:
Steve Warne's great Poppa Wheelie site has these shots of Project K/Waters Auto Body team mates Jeremy Higgins #82B (that number will be changing to a 'solid' number for 2011 based on putting the KTM in the final at Canterbury Park alone) and Chad Cose #49 on the team's Suzuki from the season-ender at Yavapi Downs:
Jeremy filed this year-end report after putting the KTM in the main for the second race of the 2010 season (and second race in a row!) in the AMA Pro Flat Track K&N Filters presented by Motorcycle Superstore.com Grand National Championship season-ending round in Prescott Valley. Check it out at THE place for flat track racing and fans, FlatTrack.com:

Here's some more info on 1st-time winner in the AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship Series, Steve Bonsey of the #80 Johnny Goad/
Alpinestars/Arai/Dodge Brothers-sponsored team. Congrats on a super season, Stevie, and we're looking forward to seeing more of you next year with a steel shoe strapped on!
Dean Adams' site SuperBikePlanet.com filed this interview with Steve Bonsey back in April of 2008 when he was still racing in the 125CC World Championship Series in Europe on an Aprilia. We're glad (and VERY lucky) to have this young man running in the AMA Pro Flat Track Series here in the States and hope that he is able to stick around and get a few more wins on the ovals!
Over at the MotoGP site they have this short story about Bonsey running in the 250CC class from June of 2009:
And RoadRacerX.com has this nice interview with Stevie from June of 2009 just after he had earned his National number at the Springfield TT, and what it was like running his first mile event in the AMA Flat Track Series at Springfield in May of '09:

More on new AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship Expert Series
rider J.D. Beach, who on his maiden voyage racing in the Expert class, stood on the podium at the Springfield Short Track with a fine 3rd place finish (behind winner Henry Wiles and 2nd place on the night Jake Johnson) on the #95C Red Bull/Top 1 Oil/Rockwall Performance/Craig Rogers-sponsored Honda 450. As a result of just making this event, J.D. earned his National number for the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Championship Expert Class. We hope to see more of this great young rider racing in the AMA Flat Track Series in the future as he definitely is a great asset to the sport. Great job, J.D.!

AMA Pro Flat Track had this story on J.D. Beach before he went out and won the Peoria TT and the Lucas Oil Indy Mile while riding in the AMA Pro Motorcycle Superstore.com Pro Singles Class:
RoadRacerX.com has this interview with J.D. from back in April, where he talks about how the road racing is going at the time (VERY well) and riding the Pro Singles events that don't conflict with his AMA Road Racing schedule:
Here is the link to J.D.'s bio on the Red Bull Rookies Cup page from when he was running in that series in 2008, where he eventually finished 16th in the overall point standings:

AMA Flat Track Minnesota Mile Review; The Tide Has Turned in the AMA Grand National Championship Point Standings

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jake Johnson sits in the pits at the Springfield Mile on Sunday, September 5th overlooking his #5 Zanotti Racing/Leo Vince/Arai/Tucker Rocky-backed XR. Jersey Jake finished 3.374 seconds back of winner Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. at the Minnesota Mile on Saturday night, and due to Joe Kopp's misfortune (more later) took the lead in the overall standings in the 2010 AMA Pro Flat Track K&N Filters presented by Motorcycle Superstore.com Grand National Championship hunt. He also won his heat and got second in the Dash to Chris Carr on the night, adding four more valuable points to his overall tally.
After being in the 2nd or 3rd spot in the overall championship hunt since early in the summer, Johnson has taken what at one time was an 18 point deficit and turned it into a 10 point advantage, and lead over Joe Kopp, 265-255. With the half mile in Knoxville, IA. this coming Saturday, and the mile event in Arizona in October the only events left on the 2010 calendar, the tide has turned in the championship hunt and now JJ is the hunted.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Rogers Lake/Blue Springs H-D/Rockysonline.com/Lucas Oil Team of #1 defending Twins Champ Jared Mees gets his XR ready for final qualifying at Springfield while Jammin Jared (center of shot) overlooks the changes. Mees has been as consistent as can be this year, and carded another fine podium finish at Canterbury Park on Saturday night with another great run to 3rd place, second in his heat to winner Johnson, and 4th in the Dash for the evening. He now lies 3rd in the overall championship standings with 246, 19 points back of new leader Jake Johnson.
Of the six men in the top 6 of the overall championship hunt, Jared is the only rider to not have won a race yet in 2010. He's done it on ability, good solid runs, well-prepared machinery and consistency, proving that it doesn't matter where we race, The Jammer will be there. And the season isn't over yet, although he won the '09 Twins Championship without a series win. Can he do it in the overall this year? Time will tell. And he's sitting pretty in the standings to be there in case someone else makes a mistake.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chris Carr gets ready to hop on his #4 Lancaster H-D/DFW Honda/Wiseco Pistons/Arai-backed XR at Springfield on Sunday, September 5th for final qualifying. His Kenny Tolbert-tuned (handing off his primary machine to The Prince of Peoria) bikes have helped the former 7-Time Grand National Champion surge to the front as of late helping him to win three Dash for Cash events in a row in the Twins Series, including his win on the Minnesota Mile in
Shakopee the other night. Add to it his strong run home in the main in 7th place, and Carr is adding to his strong year-end run in the series, where he now sits in the 7th overall spot with 190 points.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shawn Baer put the #32 Bonneville Performance/Marines/Wiseco Pistons/Motion Pro-sponsored Triumph in the main for the fourth time this year in the Twins class, and for the first time in the top 10 with a fine run into 9th place, his and the team's best-ever finish in the AMA Pro Flat Track Series Twins Series. The lone Triumph campaigning the 2010 season, Shawn has done an admirable job of learning the bike and the tracks on his Bonneville SE 865-based mount. He now sits in the 28th spot in the overall championship with 28 points, all earned in his four twins appearances this year. Bravo to Shawn and the Bonneville Performance Triumph team!
With Saturday night's 18 rider field being filled with six different manufacturers, the diversity level in AMA Pro Flat Track is at an all-time high. H-D, Triumph, KTM, Kawasaki, Ducati and Suzuki were all represented in the main event in what has been a very exciting year in terms of the makes that can and have contested the series this year.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Three riders who all had pivotal turns in their quest for the 2010 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship this weekend in Minnesota get ready to roll out for final qualifying at the Springfield Mile over Labor Day Weekend.
Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. took the #2 H-D Motor Co/Screamin Eagle/Arai/Fox-backed factory XR750 to the win at Canterbury Park over runner-up Jake Johnson by 3.374 seconds after taking the lead half way into the race over a battling Johnson and earlier-battling Matt Weidman. It was The King of Cool's first win this season, his first since the Lucas Oil Indy Mile in August of 2009, and it helped to move him up to 5th in the overall championship standings with 231 points, just 34 points back of new-series leader Jake Johnson. He also won his heat and came home 5th in the Dash for Cash behind winner Chris Carr. Kenny was quoted as saying that the track finally came to him and his bike and he was able to get around early-leaders Johnson and Weidman into the lead and take it home on top of the box for the night.
Joe Kopp on the #3 Latus H-D/Lloyd Bros/American Agip/MotoConcepts-sponsored Ducati went the other way, unfortunately. Finishing 3rd in his heat behind winner Johnson and second-place Mees, Kopp was running in the top eight when he reportedly lost a chain, dropping him to 16th on the night with only 3 points scored for this event. He now trails Johnson by 10 points, 265-255 in the overall standings with only two events left, after having as much as an 18 point lead just a few events ago.
As of this writing, Smokin Joe isn't pre-entered for the Knoxville Half Mile this coming Saturday, but it will be interesting to see if he jumps back on his Latus XR for this event, just like he did in winning the Hagerstown and Lake Odessa Half Miles earlier in the season. He ran the Ducati at Lima earlier this season for a 9th place finish, and at Calistoga brought the XR home in 7th in the main after his crash in the heat when the swingarm pivot broke.
Sammy Halbert had the worst weekend of anyone, as he was forced to sit out this round due to what was considered rough riding in a semi race at the Springfield Short Track round over Labor Day weekend. AMA Pro Flat Track Manager Mike Kidd exercised the suspension on Slammin Sammy earlier in the week, stating that he had not only been warned about his rough riding, but that he had also been on probation since the Springfield round in late May. As a result, the defending overall champ was forced to park his #7 Kings Kustoms/Nelson Racing/KK Motorcycle Supply/AGV-sponsored XR for the weekend, leaving him with the 228 points he had amassed through the Springfield rounds, and dropping him to 6th in the overall standings.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bryan Smith's #42 Werner Springsteen/Monster Energy/Wossner Pistons/SuperTrapp-backed Kawasakis sit in the pits before final qualifying at the Springfield Mile over Labor Day weekend. Flyin Bryan was shut out in his bid to win three Twins events in a row after his fine performances the prior two weekends in Springfield and Indy. However he did finish 3rd in his heat at Canterbury Park behind winner Matt Weidman and runner-up Rob Pearson, to earn a direct transfer to the main, and a fine finish of 6th place. He now sits 8th in the overall championship hunt with 177 points. The Bill Werner-tuned machine was one of two Kawasakis that made the field in Minnesota, the other ridden by Scott Powersports rider #10 Johnny Lewis, who also finished inside the top 10 with an 8th place finish (see more on this rider below).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mick Kirkness' #87 Dave Burks Motorsports/Yeager Cycles/F&S H-D/Memphis Shades-sponsored Suzuki sits in the pit area next to his XR at Springfield. The Man From Down Under put the Suzuki in the field in Shakopee via his 3rd place in the semi, and brought it home in the 14th spot in the main. He now sits 12th in the overall championship hunt with 79 points.
Waters Autobody Racing/Arlen Ness/Digger Helm/5-Star Fab & Steel-sponsored #49 Chad Cose also put a Suzuki in the main, but only was credited with one lap and a finish of 18th in the main.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Two men getting ready to roll out for practice at Springfield who both had good results in Minnesota, just not the results they could have had or would have wanted.
Henry Wiles on the #17 KK Motorcycle Supply/Mike & Eddie Adkins/Don Kissinger Racing/Saddlemen-backed XR was running away with heat 2 at Canterbury Park when he suffered an unknown mechanical and was relegated to 7th and a spot in the semi, where he promptly took the lead and the win to put it in the main, but having to start on the back row. Hammerin Hank, who just the weekend before had sowed up his second Singles Championship before winning the short track main in Springfield, got a monster start and worked his way through the pack to finish 4th in the main and move up to 4th in the overall championship standings with 239 points, 26 behind leader Johnson. And to think he didn't make the main at Indy where he might be if he had!?
Fast-all-night-long man Matt Weidman on his #20 GCR/White's H-D/SNIP/Silkolene/Shoe-backed XR set fast time, won the fastest heat and got 3rd in the Dash on his way to the main on the Minnesota Mile cushion. In what was looking like a superb finish by the New Yorker, his run at the front while battling with early leader Jake Johnson was derailed by the dirty track and a faulty tear off on his helmet, limiting his visibility in the main to a 5th place finish. Smart riding by this youngster with the million dollar smile as a result of his tear-off malady also helped him to move up a notch in the overall standings to 9th place with 108 points. And we know he's knocking at the door of that first Grand National win.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The #82B KTM machine of Jeremy Higgins sits in the pits at Springfield over Labor Day weekend. Jeremy put the Waters Auto Body Racing/Power Sports Institute/Arlen Ness Leathers/Bell Helmets-sponsored KTM into the main event on the Canterbury Park Mile last Saturday via a direct transfer to the main with a 3rd place in the second heat behind winner Coolbeth and runner-up Carr. He then made AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National history by not only putting the first KTM into a Twins event, but by bringing it home in the 12th spot in the process. He also qualified for his first Grand National race of the year (and his career!) and will get a 'solid' number for next year. Bravo to Jeremy and the Waters Auto Body Team for a fine night and a great run in helping to diversify AMA Pro Flat Track Racing.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Scott Powersports/Cycle Dynamics/K&N Filters/Pit Posse-sponsored Kawasaki of #10 Johnny Lewis gets some attention by one of the team's techs in the pits at Springfield last weekend. Lewis was the second of two Kawasakis in the field at Canterbury Park on Saturday (Bryan Smith #42 being the other) and got fourth in his heat behind Johnson, Mees and Kopp to earn his direct transfer to the main, where he brought it home in the 8th spot on the evening. He now lies 10th in the 2010 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National overall point standings with 103 points.
With the six makes (H-D, Ducati, Suzuki, KTM, Triumph and Kawasaki) that made up the main event at the Minnesota Mile, the series is looking more and more varied as the season goes on with the rules that have been established to allow the varied makes to compete on the GN Championship trail. Not since the early-mid '70s have we seen this many makes/models competing in AMA Flat Track, and it further proves that the series is on a major upswing with good close racing. And with three brands claiming wins in the Twins events this year shows just how tough it is and how far the series has come in just a few short years, if not months! Hats off to Mike Kidd and Company, the AMA, the promoters and fans, and the racers and sponsors for helping to turn the ship in the U.S. series and putting it back at the top of the must-see racing list where it should be. Bravo!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With the AMA Pro Flat Track K&N Filters presented by Motorcycle Superstore.com Grand National Championship Series round 15 in Minnesota in the bag, the series turns to the ultra-fast half mile in Knoxville, Iowa this coming Saturday night. With a new overall point leader in former 2-Time Singles Champion Jake Johnson, Joe Kopp dropping to 2nd in the hunt due to a mechanical, and defending overall champion Sammy Halbert having served his suspension and being relegated to the 6th spot in the championship hunt, the 2010 version of the best racing show on two wheels hits the Sprint Car Capital of the World for the first of two remaining events on the 2010 calendar. And as fast as this series moves, you better be there to keep up with it or it will leave you sitting in your seat long after the checkered flag flies for the season finale at the
Arizona Mile in October.

All of the highlights, on-the-scene shots and race results from the AMA's return to the Canterbury Park Mile can be read below. And check out the coverage from all of the different sources this week. The news is getting around about how good this stuff really is! Right on!

But don't go away, cuz Saturday will be here before you know it and the racing will be faster and more furious again as the racers go for it until the end in what has to be the best year of racing and competition that AMA Flat Track has seen in some time. Stay tuned for more fun! Stu's Shots will bring you all the updates from AMA Flat Track's return to Knoxville Raceway this weekend so don't stray to far away!
