PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- May 27, 2016 -- Suzuki motorcycles have a long and rich history in AMA Superbike competition. This summer at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, July 8-10 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, that history will be on full display as part of Celebrating 40 Years of AMA Superbikes, presented by Suzuki Motor of America Inc.

Suzuki's support is even more fitting because Wes Cooley, 2016 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days Grand Marshal, rode a Suzuki GS1000 to his first AMA Superbike Championship in 1979. In 1980, the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer successfully defended that title for Suzuki in one of the most thrilling AMA Superbike seasons ever.

"Not only did Wes Cooley win in exciting fashion, but he was a pioneer in a racing style that captivated fans and, at the same time time, helped AMA Superbike become the premier discipline in motorcycle road racing," said AMA Chief Operations Officer Jeff Massey. In addition to Cooley's 1980 championship bike, the Yoshimura Suzuki GS1000 owned by collector Brian O'Shea, and the bike he rode in the 1982 campaign, the Yoshimura Suzuki Katana owned by collector Ken Edgar, the display will include signage honoring Cooley's career as well as other key moments in AMA Superbike history.

July 8-10, during AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, fans will get another chance to meet the two-time AMA Superbike Champion. Cooley, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2004, will serve as the 2016 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days Grand Marshal. "I'm really excited to get back to the track and meet a lot of friends and fans from those exciting Superbike days," Cooley said. "Those were some crazy years, for sure -- for me and for Superbike racing in general. Legendary Racer Dave Aldana to Act as Grand Marshal for AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days at Mid-Ohio July 10-12

Legendary racer, multi-race winner and all around nice guy Dave 'Bones' Aldana has been chosen to serve as the Grand Marshal at the upcoming AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days celebration being held again at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on July 10-12.

Aldana, best known to most fans these days as the guy in the skeleton leathers, will be making the trip to Lexington, OH. to oversee and serve at the AMA's annual vintage meet again being held at one of the premier facilities in the United States.

In the shot above, Aldana can be seen during the rider's meeting at Mid-America Speedway in Indianapolis during the track's 'Night After the Indy Mile' on Saturday, August 9, 2014. Aldana was on hand to compete on his fleet of Honda XL350s and Bultaco 250 during the 2nd Annual AMA Vintage races held at the 'little track that could' on Indianapolis' southeast side of town at the Marion County Fairgrounds. Aldana is expected to return to this year's 3rd Annual gathering at Mid-America in early August to defend his wins in the Vintage 60+ class.

Hall of Famer Dave Aldana to serve as grand marshal of AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days


PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- June 25, 2015 -- One of motorcycle racing's all-time fan favorite riders, David Aldana, will be the grand marshal for AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, July 10-12, at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

Aldana, known for his trademark black leathers with a white skeleton print, will not only meet and greet fans at this year's event, but he'll also compete in the vintage motocross and dirt track programs of the AMA Vintage Grand Championship that takes place during AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days.

"These days, there's a real vibrant community of fans, collectors and vintage racers who fondly remember the 1970-80 era of racing," Aldana said. "Those same people are now coming out to events like AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days to re-live and re-experience those memories. They are dedicated enthusiasts and die-hard motorcyclists, and I love to spend time with them and connect over motorcycles."

Aldana said vintage racing helped pull him back into motorcycling after a layoff following his professional career.

"When I was growing up, I just enjoyed riding, whether it was my motorcycle or my bicycle," Aldana said. "When I quit road racing in the 1990s, I just stopped everything. Then when I had an opportunity to ride a vintage flat track bike, I had that same feeling that I had when I was younger. The pressure was off. I could just go out and have fun riding. That's what vintage racing is about."

One of the most colorful personalities in racing, Aldana teamed with AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Mike Baldwin to win the prestigious Suzuka eight-hour endurance race in 1981 as a Honda factory rider contesting the FIM World Championship Endurance Series. He later rode the revolutionary Elf Hondas in the world endurance series. One of the most versatile racers in the history of the sport, Aldana competed in nearly every form of motorcycle racing, including motocross and speedway racing.

Prior to his foray into endurance racing, Aldana was a top AMA Grand National Series competitor during the 1970s, winning four AMA nationals during his career. By the late-1970s, Aldana began concentrating on road racing. He became a factory rider for Suzuki and later joined Kawasaki's AMA Superbike team in 1980.

When not racing in Europe and Asia, Aldana raced in select races in America. In 1983, he finished third in the AMA Superbike race at Daytona aboard a works Honda. In 1985, Aldana rode the new Suzuki GSX-R750 for Cycle Tech Racing with teammate John Kocinski, who will be inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in October, to win the WERA National Endurance Championship.

For 2015, AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum. AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days is a fundraiser for the facility, which houses the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame and other thematic exhibits that celebrate motorcycling's heritage.

The museum was founded in 1990 to provide a permanent home to the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, which celebrates and preserves the rich tradition of motorcycling in America through the recognition of the sport's greatest heroes. Proceeds from AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days are donated to the American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization tasked with funding the operation of the museum and Hall of Fame activities.

AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days also includes North America's largest motorcycle swap meet with parts, bikes and memorabilia from all eras. "AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days has a long and rich history as one of motorcycling's most fun, feel-good events," said AMA Chief Operations Officer Jeff Massey. A fundraiser for the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days features classic motorcycles of all makes and styles, and honors the riders who made them famous.

AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famers won Grand Nationals as part of 'Indian Wrecking Crew' 

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- July 5, 2014 --In the early 1950s, three underdog riders were winning AMA Grand Nationals against their better-funded factory rivals out of Europe and Milwaukee, Wis. Whether it was the Springfield Mile, the Charity Newsies or Daytona, Bill Tuman, Bobby Hill and Ernie Beckman put their Indian motorcycles on the top step of the podium.

Known as the Indian Wrecking Crew, Tuman, Hill and Beckman made an indelible mark on the history books and solidified Indian Motocycles' reputation as one of the 20th Century's greatest marques.

On July 11-13 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, BikeBandit.com AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, featuring Indian Motorcycle, will celebrate the careers of these great racers, with surviving members Hill and Tuman serving as grand marshals. Beckman, who won three AMA Grand National events in his career, including the last AMA Grand National race won on an Indian, died in October 1999.

Tuman was the last single-day winner of the AMA Grand National Championship at the Springfield Mile in 1953 before the AMA Grand National Championship Series was created in 1954. That win also marked the last time an Indian rider won the prestigious AMA Grand National No. 1 plate. Tuman won a total of five AMA Grand Nationals during his professional racing career that spanned 1947 to 1955.

"Indian motorcycles have a special place in history," Tuman said. "In those days, when folks were looking for something to take their mind off the war, Indian racers saw some success, and those who witnessed that remember the brand as something from those glory days of racing. It will be fun to spend some time talking about those old stories this summer at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days."

Hill was AMA National Champion in 1951 and 1952 by virtue of his victories on the Springfield Mile. Hill won a total of 12 AMA Nationals during his professional racing career spanning the years 1947 to 1959. Hill's first win, in Atlanta on Aug. 8, 1948, was one of the most memorable races in AMA racing history. Hill and Billy Huber crossed the line in a dead heat and both were declared a winner, the only time that has happened in AMA Grand National competition.

"In those days, if you wanted to be successful as a racer, you had to do everything yourself," Hill said. "Engines had to be built and modified to race them as hard as we did. Bill and I have been friends -- not only friends, but like brothers -- for all these years, and we'll really enjoy sharing stories of our Indian motorcycle racing days with the fans."

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- February 24, 2014 --The American Motorcyclist Association is pleased to announce that Indian Motorcycle will be celebrated as the 2014 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days Marque of the Year, July 11-13, at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days featuring Indian Motorcycle as Marque of the Year will include special recognition, displays and race classes for historic Indian-brand motorcycles (including Indian "Motocycles" from the early days), as well as participation from the new Indian Motorcycle.

 

Attendees to the three-day festival of vintage motorcycling will experience a special Indian Motocycle-themed tent on the Mid-Ohio infield featuring beautiful examples of classic Indian machines, as well as the latest machines from the new Indian Motorcycle. In addition, a full demo fleet of Indian Motorcycles will be at the event, allowing attendees to get a feel for the Indian Motorcycle line-up.

AMA Issues Thanks to All for Successful 2013 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days Event

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- July 26, 2013 -- AMA members and motorcyclists from across the country celebrated the people, machines and sport of motorcycling at BikeBandit.com AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, featuring the riders and champions of Husqvarna, over the July 19-21 weekend. The annual gathering of tens of thousands of motorcycling enthusiasts took place at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

Attendees participated in vintage racing, took in numerous bike shows, met their motorcycling heroes, purchased vintage parts and motorcycles in the massive swap meet, spent time with old friends, and met new ones.

The AMA and the American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation, which oversees the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, extend their appreciation to AMA members, racers, enthusiasts, collectors, restorers, fans, clubs, companies and others who supported the three-day celebration of motorcycling's history and heroes.

"AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days is not just the perfect blend of old and new, it's also a wonderful example of the spirit of cooperation that drives the like-minded folks who love motorcycles and the people who ride them," said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. "I want to personally thank everybody who helped make the event a success in 2013, especially our Grand Marshal Dick Burleson, the boards of directors for both the AMA and the American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation, AMA staff, and the army of AMA members and volunteers who pitched in to support this fundraising event for the Hall of Fame."

The AMA organizes the annual AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days as a fundraiser for the Hall of Fame. It includes North America's largest motorcycle swap meet, national championship vintage racing in numerous disciplines, classic bike shows, notable awards, and presentations by some of motorcycling's leading experts and personalities.

The AMA Vintage Grand Championships, which run in conjunction with AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, add not just to the atmosphere of the event, but also draw hundreds of participants from around the country.

AMA Vice President of Operations Jeff Massey said that competitor registration continued to be strong in 2013, thanks in large part to the AMA-chartered clubs and promoters who are the AMA's organizational partners for the event.

"Once again, WERA Motorcycle Road Racing ensured the road-racing program ran like clockwork," Massey said. "Participants repeatedly commented on the professionalism of the operations -- on not just the road course, but for all disciplines."

Additional groups and individuals who contributed to the vintage racing program were the Roadracing World Action Fund for soft barrier deployment, the Ashland Fairgrounds that hosted the dirt-track event, Drew Wolf, the Dayton Motorcycle Club, Don May and Ohio Trials Inc., Mandi Mastin and her family, Bart Newman and Jeff Beerbower of Log Road MX Park in Coldwater, Mich., national anthem singer Dawn Merical and husband Mark, as well as Jim Pooler.

"We also can't overlook the superb announcing performance of long-time AMA and Hall of Fame supporter Tom White, who kept the fans and racers updated through two days of vintage and post-vintage racing on the motocross track," Massey said.

Dingman also extended his appreciation to the groups and individuals who supported the efforts of the numerous Hall of Fame activities at the event.

"The Hall of Fame and All Years Bike Show participants brought some wonderful motorcycles for all to enjoy," Dingman said. "We also greatly appreciate Mike Seate and Café Racer magazine, this year's Classic Club the Louisville Vintage Motorworks, and the show-stopping Wall of Death stunt show for contributing to the infield activities."

Dingman thanked other clubs in attendance as well, including the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club, the Kawasaki ZL Owners Club, the Christian Motorcyclists Association and ABATE of Ohio.

"We are also very grateful to our AMA Life Members who joined us for the weekend and the AMA Life Member Appreciation Breakfast," Dingman added. "The lifetime of support from these dedicated members makes everything possible."

Dingman also thanked the voice of AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, announcer Griff Allen; demo ride providers Kawasaki, KTM North America and KYMCO; Ryan Young Products for providing a trials stunt show; the companies that filled up vendor row; Federal Companies Motorcycle Shipping; all the seminar speakers; the riders who participated in the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Lap for History rides around the Mid-Ohio road race course; riders in the Craig Vetter Fuel Economy Challenge; bike show judges, which included AMHF Board Member Don Rosene and Ellis Holman and Scotty VanLeuwen of the VJMC; and everyone who purchased a raffle ticket for the Hall of Fame raffle bike.

"We also want to thank all the swap meet vendors who turned out to make the 2013 BikeBandit.com AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days swap meet one of the biggest ever," Dingman said.

Several artists contributed their talents to AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days this year, creating art in real time in the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame tent. The demonstration was an extension of the new 2 Wheels + Motor: A Fine Art Exhibition at the Hall of Fame. Those artists included Matthew Anderle, Katherine Crowley, Ken Goodson, Andrew Lumberg, Mike Siculan, Siege, Ric Stewart, Alicia Jean Vanderelli, Susan Ward.

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- June 3, 2013 -- From 1974 to 1981, AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Dick Burleson won eight consecutive AMA Grand National Enduro Championships during his remarkable career, earning the nickname "King Richard." This July 19-21, Burleson's triumphs will be celebrated when he serves as the grand marshal for BikeBandit.com AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, featuring the riders and champions of Husqvarna, at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

BikeBandit.com AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, featuring the riders and champions of Husqvarna, includes vintage racing, bike shows, seminars and an expansive motorcycle swap meet. It is a fundraiser for the 501(c)(3) AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in Pickerington, Ohio.

In addition to his incredible domestic record, Burleson also won eight consecutive gold medals in the world's top off-road competitive event, the International Six Days Trials (now called the International Six Days Enduro).

Burleson was born in Johnson City, Tenn., in 1948. His family moved to St. Joseph, Mich., when he was 2 years old. Burleson first began riding at 18, and in the late 1960s he excelled at motocross.

Burleson's off-road career took a leap in 1971 when AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer John Penton invited Burleson to race on the American Trophy team that was competing in the International Six Days Trials at the Isle of Man.

 

Burleson continued competing in international competition as well as domestically, and in 1974, Burleson earned his first AMA National Enduro Championship. He also earned his first gold medal in ISDT competition, in Italy. That kicked off an amazing eight-year period when Burleson won the AMA Grand National Enduro title each year.
