AMA Hall of Fame to Honor Legends Malcolm Smith and Mert Lawwill at 2012 Induction Ceremony on November 16-17
In a heat race that could be labeled the 'battle of the brands' of the day, riders line up for the start at the long-running Peoria TT round of the AMA Grand National Championship Camel Pro Series in August 1975. Not to mention the legends of the day that were on-hand to circulate the amphitheatre track on their 330+ lb. machines while flying off the infamous Peoria infield jump at over 70 mph.
(L-R) The late Mark Williams, wearing his Norton factory leathers, lines up on his #70 Triumph mount while looking over the rest of the front row. Behind him is Ike Reed on the #90 Triumph, along with John Gennai #20 on another British parallel Triumph twin.
'69 AMA Grand National Champion Mert Lawwill looks at ease on his factory Harley-Davidson XR750 #7, while Scott Drake on the #91 XR750 gets into position on the second row (partially obscured.) Getting ready to roll up next to Mert is 1970 AMA Grand National Champion Gene Romero on his #3 C&J Frames-sponsored Yamaha XS650-based machine, and just to Romero's left is 2-Time and Defending AMA Grand National Champion Kenny Roberts on his #1 factory Yamaha parallel twin (mostly obscured by the AMA Pit Steward.)
Lawwill, who would hang up his leathers just over two years later, was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1998, will be honored along with 1998 and fellow-inductee Malcolm Smith, at the November 16-17 AMA HOF Induction Ceremony. Again being held at the Red Rock Casino in Las Vegas, the two will be lauded for their racing accomplishments as much as for their gifts back to the sport that have served them both so well.

Malcolm Smith, Mert Lawwill to be honored as legends
PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- March 14, 2012 -- Off-road racing icon Malcolm Smith and famed national champion dirt-tracker Mert Lawwill will be honored as Motorcycle Hall of Fame Legends at the annual AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at the Red Rock Casino, Resort and Spa in Las Vegas, Nev., on Nov. 16-17.
"Just say the names 'Malcolm' and 'Mert' and the motorcycling community knows exactly who you are talking about," said Jeff Heininger, chairman of the American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation, which raises funds for the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame. "These two legends starred together in the influential 1972 motorcycling movie 'On Any Sunday,' and we're very excited that they will star together again on our induction ceremony stage."
Smith, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1998, was a pioneer in off-road motorcycling. He's famous for his accomplishments in the Baja 1000 and for his gold-medal winning rides in International Six Day Enduro competitions.
He gained fame beyond the motorcycling community when he appeared in "On Any Sunday." The scenes of Smith and Lawwill play-riding with popular actor Steve McQueen showed people across the country just how fun motorcycling could be. The movie helped launch an explosion in the popularity of off-road motorcycling in America.
Smith went on to become a successful businessman with his Malcolm Smith Motorsports motorcycle dealership in Riverside, Calif. He also built up Malcolm Smith Racing products, now known as MSR, which is owned by Tucker Rocky, where Smith works as a consultant. Known for his support of community projects, Smith also created a tax-free foundation that has raised more than $750,000 to support an orphanage and help educate children at El Oasis in Baja, Mexico, http://www.malcolmsmithmotorsportsfoundation.org.
"I'm humbled to receive this recognition because there are so many great riders and racers in the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame," Smith said. "This is a great honor. I'm looking forward to seeing old friends, and meeting new ones, at the induction ceremony in November."
Lawwill, inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1998, was one of the top professionals on the AMA national circuit during the 1960s and 1970s. He was the 1969 AMA Grand National champion and "On Any Sunday" chronicled his bid to defend his title during the 1970 racing season. By the time Lawwill hung up his racing leathers in 1977, he had amassed an incredible 161 career AMA Grand National finishes during his 15-year racing career.
Lawwill went on to become one of the top motorcycle racing frame designers and builders. He then used his expertise to create custom racing mountain bikes that won numerous national and world titles, as well as prosthetic devices to enable amputees to ride motorcycles and bicycles.
"This is totally unexpected," Lawwill said. "I'm very grateful that my peers in the motorcycling community think enough of me to honor me in this way. I'm really looking forward to this event. "
Smith and Lawwill will be honored as Legends at the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony for the Class of 2012.
Past recipients of the Legends honor are roadracing icon Kenny Roberts and motocross legends Roger DeCoster and Bob Hannah.

AMA Flat Track: Mert Lawwill, On Any Sunday, and Backmarker
'70 AMA Grand National Champion Gene Romero on his #3 C&J Frame-sponsored Yamaha XS650-based parallel twin, leads '69 AMA Grand National Champion Mert Lawwill on his #7 Harley-Davidson Factory XR-750 v-twin during heat race action at the Terre Haute Action Track in August 1975. The summer stop-off at the Indiana half-mile venue as part of the '75 Camel Pro Series/AMA Grand National Championship Series was a hot day on and off the track as riders dueled for their spot in the 18 rider main, hoping to get to the next weekend's stop of the calendar at the Indy Mile, some 75 miles east and six days later.
Two of the greats of the sport, Romero now runs his West Coast Flat Track Series, while Lawwill is still working with his 'Mert's Hands' company that helps injured riders return to the track via the use of prosthetic devices. Both featured in the movie that changed it all for flat track fans in the late '60s/early '70s, "On Any Sunday" saw the former and soon-to-be-current AMA Grand National Champions battle the long and arduous trek to attain (or retain) that coveted #1 Grand National number plate.
Mark Gardiner, who used to pen his great column 'Backmarker' on the now-defunct Road RacerX.com, is now at it again, but over at Motorcycle-USA.com. The 'Riding Man' himself caught up with the former National #7 recently, and was gracious enough to contact me for the use of some shots from back in the day. Being how I was a big fan of Mert when I was still getting my legs as a young fan (and fanatic) of AMA Flat Track, I had just the ticket to help him out, and with pleasure!
You can check out the above photo, as well as a few others that Mark and Motorcycle-USA.com were gracious enough to use AND give me credit for in the latest installment of Mark's 'Backmarker' below. Thanks to both Mark and M-USA for showcasing some of Stu's Shots 'been in the vaults a long-time' shots from the AMA Grand National Championship Series trail.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mark Gardiner penned the following story in his latest Backmarker column (now being featured at Motorcycle-USA.com) about one of the true living legends of the sport of AMA Flat Track and AMA Grand National Championship Series racing. Mert Lawwill came through to the top of the ranks when the 'so-called' glory days of racing were at their peak, in the mid-late '60s, and he was featured in the film 'On Any Sunday' by Bruce Brown that helped to bring some new fans to the track in AMA Grand National Championship racing and expose the greatest show on wheels in the world.
Check out Mark's latest column as he gets the chance to catch up with former Grand National #7:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And you can read more of Mark's great stuff below. The author of 'Riding Man,' Mark's exploits in dropping everything in his life to attain his quest of riding the Isle of Man TT is a great read for any motorcycle racing fan, let alone one that is a fan of racing at one of the iconic and deadliest circuits in the world. When Mark isn't penning for any of the online rags, you can keep up with his work at his Bikewriter site here:

AMA Pro Racing Announces Cortech as Sponsor for Live Timing and Scoring

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chuck Palmgren on the #38 Daniel S. Gurney (DSG) Yamaha parallel twin leads '69 AMA Grand National Champion Mert Lawwill on the #7 Harley-Davidson Factory XR750, with Shell Thuett-sponsored Hank Scott bringing up the rear on his #14 Yamaha, during heat race action at the New York State Fairgrounds in September of 1975. The Camel Pro Series/AMA Flat Track Grand National Championship Series annual stop on the Syracuse Mile was a very well attended event by riders and fans alike, and was one of the last East Coast Nationals in those days before the series headed back to the West Coast to wrap up the year's championship.

AMA Pro Racing Welcomes Cortech as Presenting Sponsor of AMA Pro Live Timing & Scoring
DAYTONA BEACH, FL (March 10, 2011) - AMA Pro Racing is pleased to announce the addition of Cortech apparel and gear as Presenting Sponsor of AMA Pro Racing's Live Timing & Scoring functions on www.amaproracing.com and AMA Pro's new mobile applications.
Well known for their high-performance lines of motorcycle apparel and accessories, Cortech's support of the AMA Pro Road Racing series also includes the $2,000 "Fast Man Standing" year-end rider reward, which will acknowledge the AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike competitor who logs the most fastest-lap designations during the season's races.
"We're very excited to have Cortech join our group of sponsors," said COO and Managing Member David Atlas. "Our new mobile applications and enhanced Live Timing and Scoring are essential parts of our continued efforts to deliver more-accessible information to our fans and participants, and we're so pleased to have Cortech support this incredibly important facet of our sport."
"We're extremely proud to be involved with AMA Pro Racing," said Helmet House Director of Marketing Richard Kimes. "Helmet House was a long-time supporter of the series under the Shoei name, but this is a first for Cortech and very exciting across the board. We're looking forward to a great 2011 season."

You can check out Tour Master's Cortech catalog here:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And here are the new links to AMA Pro Racing's Live Timing apps on the net. These are also listed on the left side column of the site under the 'AMA' info lists, and unlike previous years, the links stay static, in other words no changing from event to event.
Hopefully the season-opening bugs/problems associated with the Live Timing and Scoring applications are and will be taken care of by the next events on each series' respective schedule. In defense of AMA Pro Flat Track, the problems encountered during the opening round one event at the Daytona Short Track were experienced only during qualifying rounds, and by the time the evening's program commenced for heat races, the site was working well with no apparent glitches seen for the rest of the two rounds.
However, another red ink spot on the chart for AMA Pro Road Racing, to go along with all of the other problems during the shortened Daytona 200, the LT&S did go down after the lengthy red flag, and never got back running by the time the event finally wrapped up. Hopefully this will not happen again throughout the year!

'69 AMA Grand National Champion Mert Lawwill Talks to Flat Track.com's Fans In The Stands, Chew and Mia Larcom

Thursday, September 23, 2010
Happy Birthday to Mert Lawwill: '69 AMA Grand National Champion and AMA Hall of Famer

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mert Lawwill gets a leg down in practice in between turns 1 and 2 at the Terre Haute Half Mile round of the AMA Grand National Championship Series in August of 1975. Mert captured the '69 AMA Grand National Championship as well as competing in over 160 events as a pro on the AMA Flat Track scene from the early '60s until his retirement in 1977. He also won 17 AMA Grand National Championship Series races throughout his career and went on to be inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame in 1998 as well as being inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 1997 for his ground-breaking work in the mountain bike industry. Mert still works in the frame and suspension areas with bicycles and motorcycles and also works with amputees in helping to develop prosthetic limbs. His son Joe is a well-known competitor in downhill mountain bike competition.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mert strolls the pits at Terre Haute in '75 while then-National #77 Eddie Wirth walks back to his pits behind him. Sitting in his pits on the right side of the shot is Ken Springsteen #76X with his Vista Sheen-sponsored XR750's sitting just over Mert's right shoulder. Ken and Jay ('76-'78 AMA Grand National Champion) were team mates on the Vista Sheen team during their rookie seasons in the AMA Grand National Championship Flat Track Series and had been sponsored by them for a couple of years coming through the amateur and novice ranks in the AMA's ladder system of AMA Flat Track Racing.
Some of Mert's ventures outside of the flat track motorcycle racing scene involved working with and developing prosthetics for amputees as well as his legendary work in the mountain bike industry. He also teamed with Kenny Roberts in the late '70s/early '80s on the Roberts/Lawwill Racing Team, which included riders Jimmy Filice and former 2-Time Grand National Champion Dick Mann as one of the team's advisors. The bike was based on the Yamaha Virago V-Twin engine that was very popular on the street some 30-odd years ago. It was also one of Yamaha's strongest selling and most popular platforms for street use as well. It never really quite came around in the flat track scene, unfortunately.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Heat race action at Terre Haute in '75 with a talent pool that was to say the least, pretty deep. Leading on the #3 C&J Frames-backed Yamaha parallel twin is 1970 AMA Grand National Champion Gene Romero, followed by '69 AMA GNC Mert Lawwill on the #7 factory H-D XR, '73-'74 AMA Grand National Champion Kenny Roberts on the #1 Yamaha factory XS650-based parallel twin, and former National #77 Eddie Wirth just coming into the shot on his privateer XR. 1981 AMA Grand National Champion and current AMA Pro Flat Track Manager and overseer Mike Kidd won the main event at the Terre Haute Action Track that day.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stu's Shots wants to take the time to wish '69 AMA Grand National Champion Mert Lawwill a VERY happy birthday which he will be celebrating on Friday, September 24th. Having caught on to AMA Flat Track Racing in the summer of 1974, Mert was one of the main men on the scene in those days, and always seemed to have a smile on his face to go along with his will of iron and tenacity on the track.
Besides competing on the pro scene for some 15 years, Mert was one of many riders in the day to come out of the Pacific Northwest area of the United States in the late '50s/early '60s, although by the time he was racing in the pro ranks he was based in California. He is not only a member of the '98 AMA Hall of Fame class, but was an inductee into the '97 Mountain Bike Hall of Fame class as well for his ground-breaking work in the industry with mountain bike frames. He was also inducted into the Washington State Motorcycle Hall of Fame and was one of the inaugaral inductees into the AMA Flat Track Hall of Fame at the Springfield Mile in late summer of 1998. His work in the area of hand prosthetics goes back to the mid/late '60s when he first worked with a former team mate who had lost his hand in a racing accident, and to this day works to develop limbs through his company Mert's Hands.
You can check out some more info on former National #7 below and help in wishing one of the all-time greats of AMA Flat Track and AMA Grand National Championship Series racing a big happy birthday. Thanks for all of the racing memories, Mert, and thanks for all you have done throughout your life to help people as well. Have a great day!!
