Legendary Racer Dave Aldana to Act as Grand Marshal for AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days at Mid-Ohio July 10-12

Legendary racer, multi-race winner and all around nice guy Dave 'Bones' Aldana has been chosen to serve as the Grand Marshal at the upcoming AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days celebration being held again at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on July 10-12.

Aldana, best known to most fans these days as the guy in the skeleton leathers, will be making the trip to Lexington, OH. to oversee and serve at the AMA's annual vintage meet again being held at one of the premier facilities in the United States.

In the shot above, Aldana can be seen during the rider's meeting at Mid-America Speedway in Indianapolis during the track's 'Night After the Indy Mile' on Saturday, August 9, 2014. Aldana was on hand to compete on his fleet of Honda XL350s and Bultaco 250 during the 2nd Annual AMA Vintage races held at the 'little track that could' on Indianapolis' southeast side of town at the Marion County Fairgrounds. Aldana is expected to return to this year's 3rd Annual gathering at Mid-America in early August to defend his wins in the Vintage 60+ class.

Check out the full press release below from the AMA and if you are in the MId-Ohio area over the July 10-12 weekend, be sure to look Dave up and tell him that Stu's Shots says 'Hi' and that we again are looking forward to seeing him here in Indy in a few short weeks!

Hall of Famer Dave Aldana to serve as grand marshal of AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- June 25, 2015 -- One of motorcycle racing's all-time fan favorite riders, David Aldana, will be the grand marshal for AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, July 10-12, at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

Aldana, known for his trademark black leathers with a white skeleton print, will not only meet and greet fans at this year's event, but he'll also compete in the vintage motocross and dirt track programs of the AMA Vintage Grand Championship that takes place during AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days.

"These days, there's a real vibrant community of fans, collectors and vintage racers who fondly remember the 1970-80 era of racing," Aldana said. "Those same people are now coming out to events like AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days to re-live and re-experience those memories. They are dedicated enthusiasts and die-hard motorcyclists, and I love to spend time with them and connect over motorcycles."

Aldana said vintage racing helped pull him back into motorcycling after a layoff following his professional career.

"When I was growing up, I just enjoyed riding, whether it was my motorcycle or my bicycle," Aldana said. "When I quit road racing in the 1990s, I just stopped everything. Then when I had an opportunity to ride a vintage flat track bike, I had that same feeling that I had when I was younger. The pressure was off. I could just go out and have fun riding. That's what vintage racing is about."

One of the most colorful personalities in racing, Aldana teamed with AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Mike Baldwin to win the prestigious Suzuka eight-hour endurance race in 1981 as a Honda factory rider contesting the FIM World Championship Endurance Series. He later rode the revolutionary Elf Hondas in the world endurance series. One of the most versatile racers in the history of the sport, Aldana competed in nearly every form of motorcycle racing, including motocross and speedway racing.

Prior to his foray into endurance racing, Aldana was a top AMA Grand National Series competitor during the 1970s, winning four AMA nationals during his career. By the late-1970s, Aldana began concentrating on road racing. He became a factory rider for Suzuki and later joined Kawasaki's AMA Superbike team in 1980.

When not racing in Europe and Asia, Aldana raced in select races in America. In 1983, he finished third in the AMA Superbike race at Daytona aboard a works Honda. In 1985, Aldana rode the new Suzuki GSX-R750 for Cycle Tech Racing with teammate John Kocinski, who will be inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in October, to win the WERA National Endurance Championship.

For 2015, AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum. AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days is a fundraiser for the facility, which houses the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame and other thematic exhibits that celebrate motorcycling's heritage.

The museum was founded in 1990 to provide a permanent home to the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, which celebrates and preserves the rich tradition of motorcycling in America through the recognition of the sport's greatest heroes. Proceeds from AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days are donated to the American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization tasked with funding the operation of the museum and Hall of Fame activities.

AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days also includes North America's largest motorcycle swap meet with parts, bikes and memorabilia from all eras. Bike shows bring out examples of some of history's most beloved motorcycles, while stunt shows, such as the American Motor Drome Wall of Death, and demo rides of current production bikes keep attendees entertained. Seminars feature some of the country's leading experts on numerous motorcycling topics.

It all adds up to one of motorcycling's premier events. Purchase tickets now from Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course

Mid-America Speedway in Indy Announces 2015 Schedule, Includes Night Before the Indy Mile & AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Series

(Above) Brad 'The Bullet' Baker, the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Champion, showed up at Mid-America in August 2014 equipped with his Baker Boys Honda CRF450R and proceeded to own the track throughout the evening in the Open Class event that saw him take home the  $1500 to win monies available to the Pro and Expert riders in attendance over the Indy Mile weekend. A large contingent of GNC1 and GNC2 (formerly known as the Expert and Pro class riders in AMA Pro Flat Track) are expected to attend this year's Night Before the Indy Mile race on July 10. Mid-America Speedway Announces 2015 Season Schedule

Indianapolis, IN. – March 31, 2015 – Mid-America Speedway in Indianapolis would like to announce their new schedule for the upcoming 2015 season, which kicks off next month with the first event of the season on Saturday, April 25 with their annual spring event, the Flat-Track Forums Night (http://flat-track.com/forum/). This year Mid-America Speedway will be hosting and supporting a total of 14 races throughout the 2015 season.

Track president and race promoter Jim Terchila and his great crew will again preside over the racing action at the Marion County Fairgrounds-hosted track, located on Indy's southeast side. “We're looking forward to the new season ahead, and this year includes our regularly scheduled regional races to go along with what will be our hosting of two big premier events at our facility.

“This year's schedule will include our third year of hosting the AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Series sponsored by Harley-Davidson of Bloomington, IN. on August 8 during the Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP Weekend, and our annual Night Before the Indy Mile race that is scheduled for July 10 and will again see a $1500 payout in the Open Class pro race. This year's race will be held the Friday night before the AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship stop at the Indiana State Fairgrounds on July 11,” stated Terchila.

“We are also partnering this year for the first time with the 3rd Annual Hoosier Bike Rally in Frankfort, IN. and we will be running a limestone half-mile race at the Clinton County Fairgrounds on September 12, which will be a part of the three days of festivities over the September 10-13 weekend that will also feature food, music, a car & truck cruise along with our first-ever half-mile race. You can find out more about this big weekend at their website, http://homegrownbiker.com/hoosierbikerally.

“We're very proud of what we have been able to do over the years thanks to the folks at the Marion County Fairgrounds, and in what will be our 8th year of operation we have also updated our track logo for the first redesign in our history to honor local racer and hero Dan Ingram, AMA Grand National #31 who recently announced his retirement from full-time racing. Dan is a long-time supporter and competitor at Mid-America and we wanted to do something special for him to honor his many years of support at our facility.”

The track would also like to remind everyone about the season-ending Halloween race, one of the facility's best-attended events of each year. “Traditionally this has been our 2nd-biggest event each year and it includes costumes and a 25-lap Open Class main event that pays a minimum of $500 to win. With just over three weeks to go before the first race of the season, it's not too early to start marking your calendars and making plans for what will be another thrilling and exciting season of racing at Mid-America Speedway as we look forward to hosting some of the best flat track racers and fans in the Midwest. For more info on this year's schedule, please take the time to visit our website at http://www.midamspeedway.com/schedule.php,” Terchila stated in closing.

Mid-America Speedway's 'Night After the Indy Mile' Proves Wildly Successful in Round 10 of the 2014 AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series, Brad Baker Romps to Open Pro Win

Indianapolis, IN,--August 9, 2014--One of the premier events in the Midwest during the late summer months is Mid-America Speedway's hosting of their premier 'Night After the Indy Mile' race, which up until this year had actually been the 'Night Before the Indy Mile.' With the altering of the AMA Pro Flat Track and MotoGP World Championship schedules for the Indy weekend this year, the race was moved to the Saturday night after the legendary Indy Mile over the Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP weekend, and it proved to be even more wildly successful than any of the previous events that the track has hosted over the course of the last few seasons. This year 155 racers and 210 entries made for a long, late night, but proved to be the best turn-out ever in Mid-America's seven-year history, and the racing never was lacking as usual at 'the little track that could.'

This year's event of course included the track's famous Open Pro Class, which beckons some of the best of the best in AMA Pro Flat Track's riders, who already in the area for the Indy Mile, are ready to earn some extra traveling cash and tout their abilities in front of a smaller and more close-knit crowd. This year's event saw 2013 AMA Grand National Champion Brad Baker, former AMA Grand National #15 Garth Brow, current Zanotti Racing rider Stevie Bonsey and a host of other greats show up to do war on Mid-America's fast and furious short track, and the action was as good or better as seen at the venue or any other regional events in the area, for that matter.

Mid-America also hosted their 2nd Annual AMA Racing Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series round, which saw former greats such as former 7-Time AMA Grand National Champion Chris Carr, Dave 'Bones' Aldana, last year's runner-up in the Bultaco race and Zanotti Racing tuner Dave Atherton and several other former AMA Grand National number plate holders do battle on the little track that could.

Aldana was again on-hand to do battle in the Bultaco race and Vintage 60+ Class, while Carr tried his hand for the first time at Mid-America riding a Bultaco Astro 360 in four of the night's events. And at the end of the evening, although the races ran somewhat later than usual due to the stellar turn-out of riders and entries, everyone left a winner whether crossing the line for the checkers first or via spectating in the stands overlooking Mid-Am's wonderful layout.

In the shot above, Chris Carr #4 and Dave Aldana #13 dice during one of the practice rounds at Mid-America Speedway for the Bultaco Astro Race event, which saw over 30 entries show up to do battle and let the two-stroke pipes sing and the two-smoke smell waft in the air for all to enjoy. Aldana was on his own self-prepared Bultaco 250 while Carr was on a sponsored unit which he used to contest four of the evening's events on.

The Open Pro Class race at Mid-America has been a must-see for any fan the last few seasons, as well as a 'must race' event for many of the AMA Grand National number plate holders. Up until this year, 2012 AMA Grand National Champion Jared Mees had been the undefeated champ at the track located on Indy's southeast side at the Marion County Fairgrounds.

This year, Mees, after a tiring schedule of running the AMA Grand Nationals and Steve Nace Racing AMA All-Star Races, was a no-show in order to be better prepared to grab his second AMA Grand National Championship for the remaining races on the 2014 schedule.

As a result, there is a new 'sheriff' in town as 2013 AMA Grand National Champion Brad Baker made his second appearance in-a-row at Mid-America on his Brothers Powersports Honda CRF450R and was looking to improve on his last year's 5th-place finish. Baker didn't miss a beat all night, from opening practice until the final checkers flew in the Open Pro main event, and took home the $1500-to win purse going away on his #1 mount (shown above during practice.)

Andy Karadontes made the trip from his home in New York State with this ultra-sano #3 Honda 500 Ascot in a Knight frame, and cleaned house in three of the classes he was entered in, including 500 Masters and Hot Rod Singles as part of round 10 of the 2014 AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series held for the second year in-a-row at Mid-America.

Kasey Sciscoe #61 is one of the local talents at Mid-America Speedway, having raced at the track for several years now. Moving up to a Honda CRF250R this season, the 13 year-old from the Mooresville, Indiana-area has been showing progress in just his first year after having ridden some of the 100cc bikes and smaller. Here he can be seen dicing with another rider during the 80-200cc 2/4 Stroke Class main event. With riders like this fine young man, who's Dad, Mike, was in charge of one of the great food vendors for the evening, and who tunes Kasey's mounts for him, the future of flat track is going to be very bright.

Former AMA Grand National #15 Garth Brow made the trip to Indy to initially compete in the AMA Pro Flat Track Pro Singles event at the Indy Mile on the previous night at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, but after lunching something in the motor of his Honda CRF450R in the final qualifying session at Indy, was ready to go home to South Carolina and call it a weekend.

After talking with track president and promoter Jim Terchila, we had talked Garth into sticking around for the 'Night After the Indy Mile' event to possibly throw a leg over a ride in the AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series race in the Bultaco Astro Event. When things didn't work out on that end, Brow ended up getting a ride on a pretty decent bike--one of Stevie Bonsey's back-up Zanotti Racing Hondas for the Open Pro Class.

Brow (shown during one of the Open Pro practice sessions on the #8 Zanotti Racing Honda CRF450R) acclimated pretty quickly to his borrowed mount and went out and won his heat race to nab a direct spot for the Open Pro main. Unfortunately, due to a red flag in his heat, he was forced to start on the second row in the Open main, and only scored an 11th-place finish, but he looked good and showed team owner Dave Zanotti and crew as well as the fans that he still has it in him after all these years. Even Zanotti was impressed with his heat win, and as he put it was 'glad to help give back to the sport and racers' in putting Garth on one of his immaculately-prepped bikes.

7-Time AMA Grand National Champion Chris Carr (partially obscured by another rider's hat), Bultaco Astro racer and Zanotti Racing tuner Dave Atherton, and Dave 'Bones' Aldana take it all in during the riders meeting early in the day at Mid-America Speedway on Saturday, August 9.

Aldana again showed up for Mid-America's round 10 of the 2014 AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series with two of his three Honda XL350-based Champion-framed mounts, as well as a new steed in his corral, a Bultaco 250 also set in a Champion frame. For the second year in-a-row Aldana ended up running off and hiding in the Vintage 60+ Class on his Honda, here seen setting up Melvin Brown on his #50 Triumph twin for the pass. Once 'Bones' got around him, it was all over and he sailed home the victor.

Former AMA Grand National competitorTim Ferguson #20 and former AMA Grand National #64 plate holder Charlie Roberts dice for the 6th-place spot during the Bultaco Astro Challenge event at Mid-America. Roberts got the nod at the end, with Ferguson coming home in the 7th-place spot.

Youngster Charlie Gerencer put it to everyone all night in the Bultaco Astro Challenge event on the #28 Astro 360. The 15 year-old was never challenged.

Andy Heise on his #4F Honda took the win in the Super Senior 50+ Class at Mid-America Speedway's 'Night After the Indy Mile' Vintage race.

Although the Bultaco Astro Challenge event was perceived as a race for the 'older' stars of AMA Pro Flat Track, there were several 'younger' riders on-hand to do battle and blow smoke for the fans at the little track that could, and even though one of those youngsters won the main event, there was still plenty of action throughout the night to keep us 'old horses' satisfied, thrilled and exhilarated as they laid down some rubber to go along with the smell of two-stroke smoke in the air to cleanse the palate.

During one of the Bultaco practice sessions above, Dave Aldana #13 on his 250 and Dave Atherton #15X on his 360 (shown wearing one of Charlie Gerencer's #28 team jerseys throughout the evening) dice it up coming out of Mid-America's turn four just ahead of former AMA Grand National #68 and North Carolina's Robert Lewis on his #68C Bultaco 360.

AMA Pro Flat Track regulars Chad Cose #49 and Stevie Bonsey #80 try to keep from dozing off during the riders meeting early in the day at Mid-America Speedway. Cose was making his first appearance at the Marion County Fairgrounds-hosted facility while Bonsey was back this year after appearing in last year's event. Both rode the Open Pro Event, Cose on a borrowed Honda framer and Bonsey on one of Dave Zanotti's potent CRF450Rs.

Terry Vestal #27 made the trip to Indy from his home in Wisconsin with this immaculate Harley-Davidson KR model, and went out and won the 750 Ironman-Brakeless Class with it, making it look effortless in the process.

Riders line up for the big money-paying Open Pro Event at Mid-America Speedway, and when the racing was done, no one was disappointed in the outcome. Some of the best racing of the night and the year was put on by some of AMA Pro Flat Track's best in front of those that stuck around for the late evening premier race.

(L-R) Australia's Mick Kirkness #87 (Kirkness also rode the Speedway Class at Mid-Am and took home the glory in the methanol/brakeless event), Sam Lowe #48X, Brad 'The Bullet' Baker #1, Jeffrey Carver, Jr. #23, Jarod Vanderkooi #8X and Chad Cose #73F make up the front row at the Marion County Fairgrounds-hosted Open Pro main. Australia's Jace Castles #81P and Brandon Wilhelm #24J can be seen on row two.

Baker had the point from the start to the end, and put on a clinic to put himself in the 'man to beat next year' spot at Mid-America. In just his second outing at the track, the Washington State resident was ready to go and he wasted no time from the time he unloaded until the final dust of the Open Pro main had settled, doing several of his patented victory wheelies around the track to celebrate winning the big purse for the evening.

While the winner was decided from the start, the racing behind was up in the air throughout as several riders swapped rubber and bars, without any mishaps or incidents throughout the 12-lap final.

In the end, Vanderkooi took the runner-up spot on his #8X Honda, fresh off his win the night before in the AMA Pro Flat Track Pro Singles Series at the Indy Mile, and the 16 year-old Ohio resident wowed the crowd on-hand with his ability to swap it with the others and keep a solid head on his shoulders. Look for this fine young man to move up to the Expert ranks in the next couple of years and make the future even brighter than it is already!

Cose, on a borrowed Honda framer, took the #73F mount to the 3rd-place spot after a good start and holding off the charge of several other racers, while making some excellent moves of his own. The short track specialist was making his first start at Mid-America, and as with all of the competitors at Mid-Am, we hope he's ready to come back next year!

John Skinner made the trip again to the Marion County Fairgrounds from his home in Alabama with his spotless #66 Triumph Trackmaster, and won the 750 Hotshoe Class in the Vintage races.

3-Time AMA Grand National Championship-winning team owner Dave Zanotti was again on-hand during the 'Night After the Indy Mile' event and again brought along star rider Stevie Bonsey on the #80 Zanotti Racing/Top 1 Oils/K&N Filters-sponsored Honda. Both were making their second appearance in-a-row at Mid-America and this year brought along Bonsey's tuner Steve Polk (partially obscured behind Bonsey) and team consultant and helper Michelle DiSalvo.

Zanotti as mentioned previously had lent Garth Brow one of Bonsey's back-up machines, while Bonsey was doing some testing of a new ignition system for the team hot off their Indy Mile win with team mate Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. the previous night at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Bonsey, who had a solid run at the mile the previous evening to take home 7th-place, seemed to struggle this year out at Mid-America, early in the day due to the extremely dusty conditions (that were near perfect come main event times.)

Struggling to a 13th-place finish in the Open Pro Event, the Salinas, CA. resident was hoping for much better after his initial appearance at the track last year when he brought it home in the 3rd-place spot. Let's hope he returns next year and gets back on the box, because the whole team's enthusiasm for the sport just flows when you talk with them, and all have given so much for the sport as well as given back. It's great to see teams like this supporting the smaller, regional races like this and seeming to be overly thrilled to be doing so.

Also, a big thanks to team owner Dave Zanotti for sharing some of his valuable time with us at the track, it was a very rewarding and interesting experience being able to talk one-on-one with one of the long-standing supporters of the sport and one of the great team owners.

As mentioned above, from the time the green light flashed in the Open Pro main event at Mid-America Speedway, 2013 AMA Grand National Champion Brad Baker didn't miss a beat, leading all 12 laps of the race to take his initial victory at the little track that could on his #1 Brothers Powersports Honda CRF450R, and his steely-eyed glare shows the determination that the reigning AMA Grand National Champ had that evening.

After getting the jump on the field, Baker leads Australian Mick Kirkness #87, Sam Lowe #48X and Jarod Vanderkooi #8X (2nd-place) early in the running. Kirkness ended up 4th, with Lowe in the 7th-place spot.

More results from the evening can be found here. And results from the 2014 AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series can be found here.

All in all, the evening was a huge success at Mid-America Speedway and left little doubt as to the success of the event thanks to all of the racers, teams, fans and especially track president and promoter Jim Terchila and his great crew for all of their efforts to put on one of the premier racing events in the Midwest, if not the nation as a whole.

Whatever you do, keep an eye out for the 2015 schedule and be sure you mark the weekend of Mid-America's hosting of the 'Night After the Indy Mile' for next season as it is undoubtedly an event that you don't and won't want to miss!

Indy's Mid-America Speedway Announces Return to Original Management Effective Immediately

Indianapolis' own hidden gem, Mid-America Speedway, located on the southeast side of Indy at the Marion County Fairgrounds, recently went through a short-term management change when track founder and president Jim Terchila decided to step down earlier this year due to family and work commitments. With his travel schedule at work and home life being affected in a major way, Terchila turned over management duties to a local club to run the regular racing activities at the track, which he has operated along with a very stout, loyal and professional team now for some seven years.

Unfortunately, things didn't go according to plan, and effective this last Satuday, June 28, Jim stepped back in and re-took control of complete operations of the track along with his full, original crew of long-standing referees, pit stewards and track announcer, among others. After talking with Jim over the course of the last few weeks, it was obvious things weren't going to work out with the new team running things, and even with the support of his wife never ending, gave in the ghost and decided to take back control of operations, after fulfilling his initial obligations to those that had tried to take over operations--something he had originally hoped would be seamless, but which turned into more of a cluster than what the man who IS Mid-America Speedway could sit by and let happen.

Below is the press release we prepared for Jim (Mr. Mid-America Speedway himself) after we talked late Saturday about his coming back to helm the ship, and he and his lovely wife Holly are looking forward to bringing everyone the same level of professional racing activities that they and their crew have been synonymous with for all of their years of operation at the Marion County Fairgrounds.

We want to take the time to welcome Jim and his crew back, as I am sure many of you as well as the regular attendees and racers will be in seeing that things will be back to normal at the next race on the schedule on Saturday, July 12 at Mid-America Speedway in Indy, the little track that could!

Indy's Mid-America Speedway Announces Operations to Return to Original Track Management Effective Immediately

Indianapolis, IN., June 29, 2014 – Mid-America Speedway in Indianapolis, one of the finest racing facilities in the Midwest, announced yesterday that track operations would return to the original management team effective immediately. Track founder and president, Jim Terchila made the announcement on Saturday afternoon, June 28.

After founding the facility some seven years ago, Terchila had turned over operations to another local club in lieu of job and family obligations that were taking their toll in being able to maintain the track's operations at the level with which he had originally started the outing over half a decade ago.

“Unfortunately, due to some difficulties with the three races with which they had been in charge here at the Marion County Fairgrounds, it just didn't work out,” stated Terchila. “As of today and for the rest of the season, our original management team will be back in charge of race operations, which will commence with our next race on Saturday, July 12.

“We are obviously looking ahead to the rest of the season, especially with the fast-approaching premier event on our schedule, The Night After the Indy Mile race, which this year will be held on Saturday, August 9,” continued the president of track operations, “and this year's event will again see the two premier classes in the Open Pro and Bultaco Astro Cup events. Jared Mees will again return to defend his unbeaten record here at Mid-America and Dave 'Bones' Aldana, last year's winner Steve Morehead and a host of other former AMA Grand National Championship greats will also be on hand again for some of the racing we have lined up.

"All of our previous personnel will also be returning to action, our pit steward and referee, as well as long time announcer Bret Cheek, who is known for his intense level of excitement and fiery enthusiasm which bestows the overall sentiments which we have tried to bring to the table in all of our years of operating here at the fairgrounds.” Terchila also wanted everyone to know that his lovely wife, Holly, whom everyone has known to become the welcoming hostess in the sign-up area, will also be returning to greet all of the riders and team members as they arrive for each outing.

You can expect the same level of great racing that has been seen for years at Mid-America Speedway going forward, and you can keep up with their full compliment of events by visiting their website at www.midamspeedway.com.  Mid-America would also like to take the time to thank all of the racers, teams, personnel, sponsors and fans who have been a part of the track's success over the years and for making it the great facility that it has become during all of the years it has been in operation.

13 Rounds Scheduled for 2014 AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series, Including Indy's Mid-America Speedway

The AMA released their complete 2014 AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series schedule late yesterday, and as expected Indy's Mid-America Speedway will return to the series for the second year in-a-row this upcoming summer. 13 total rounds will make up the schedule, which kicks off in Florida in early March and wraps up in late September in New York State.

Falling mid-point in the schedule for the 2014 season is Mid-America Speedway, located on Indy's southeast side at the Marion County Fairgrounds. The 'little track that could' again will play host to racers young and old on August 9 as the circuit will once again highlight the Pro-level competition of today alongside the Pro-level racers of yesterday. The 2013 season saw the track host it's first AMA Vintage meet, with the Bultaco Astro Challenge showcasing the talents of racers from AMA Pro Flat Track's past while racing on some of the iconic brand's famous two-stroke model single-cylinder machines that set the bar for the short track competition from the late '60s through the mid '70s.

In the shot above, Brett Miller #44F leads former 2000 AMA Grand National Champion Joe Kopp #3 out of turn 2 at Mid-America Speedway during one of the evening's heat races in the Bultaco Astro Challenge series' initial outing at Indy on August 16, 2013. Kopp, in his first time on a two-stroke racer, took to the machines like the former champion he is, coming to terms with the compression release as utilized on the Bultaco models.

Indy's Mid-America Speedway will once again host the Bultaco Astro Challenge in 2014, that saw former champions of the sport Kopp, Jay Springsteen, Dave Aldana, Garth Brow, Steve Morehead and a host of others flock to the facility for the evening's great racing. The track is planning on the return of many of the great racers for the second outing of the AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series, in what will be dubbed 'The Night After the Indy Mile' for the 2014 event. Many of the sport's stars past and present will be in town for the August 9 running of AMA Pro Flat Track's Indy Mile at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

Another of the great racing classes showcased in the Vintage Dirt Track National Championship is the 60+ Vintage Open class, which will also return to Mid-America for the second time in 2014.

In the shot above, Tim Hurley #48E, Alan Niles #88, Bill Snyder #4, Joe Baggott #68, Dave Atherton #15X (partially hidden) and Dave Aldana #13 roar off the line at Mid-America Speedway during the 60+ Vintage Open main event on August 16 at the track's hosting of the 2013 Night Before the Indy Mile race. Aldana rocketed into turn one and never looked back to steal the win in front of a crowded house at Mid-Am's Marion County Fairgrounds.

With the racing season still just over two months away, it's never too early to start making your plans for the upcoming year's schedule. The AMA Vintage Series is one of the great series that each year showcases some of the machines and riders of days gone by, but the racing is at the very least some of the most competitive no matter the age of either, and is well worth your while to check out. Make sure to mark your calendar for whatever event is closest to you, and when you are in Indy in August, be sure to make Mid-America Speedway your go-to event for it's 2014 version of 'The Night After the Indy Mile' round to see all of the great action taking place on Indy's southeast side.

AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series kicks off March 8

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- December 30, 2013 -- Racers of classic dirt-track racing motorcycles will begin their hunt for 2014 titles on March 8 in Savannah, Ga., when the AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship kicks off with its first of 13 rounds.

"Motorcycle dirt-track racing is one of motorsports' great historic disciplines, and the AMA is honored to support the vibrant community of vintage dirt trackers with national championship recognition," said AMA Track Racing Manager Ken Saillant. "The AMA has a rich history in the sport, dating to the original factory Class-A racing in the 1920s and the Class-C production-based format that continues today. The motorcycles that helped write that history are amazing machines, and it's thrilling to see many of them still on the track, competing for AMA national No. 1 plates."

The AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series recognizes national champions in period-correct classes that reflect the storied history of AMA dirt-track competition. Class winners are honored at the annual AMA Championship Banquet, which recognizes national champions in all amateur racing disciplines.

The first three rounds of the 2014 AMA Vintage National Dirt Track Championship Series run in conjunction with the AMA-sanctioned amateur dirt-track program that has grown up around Daytona Bike Week.

Mid-America Speedway's Round 10 of the 2013 AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Sees Steve Morehead Steal the Bultaco Astro Cup Victory, Dave Aldana Runaway Victor in Vintage 60+ Class

Mid-America Speedway's Round 10 of the 2013 AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Sees Steve Morehead Steal the Bultaco Astro Cup Victory, Dave Aldana Runaway Victor in Vintage 60+ Class

Mid-America Speedway, Indianapolis, IN. – August 16, 2013 – Mid-America Speedway's inaugural hosting of the AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series saw the track's hosting of the first Bultaco Astro Cup, and after the dust and two-stroke smoke had settled former AMA Pro Flat Track veteran and Findlay, OH. resident Steve Morehead topped the victory podium over runner-up Tom Morgan and 3rd-place finisher Dave Atherton.

Over 30 riders had signed up on the pre-entry list to contest the race, a tribute to the popular marque that dictated AMA Pro Flat Track competition in the sport's hey-day in the late '60s throughout the '70s. Riders including Morehead, '00 AMA Grand National Champion Joe Kopp, 3-Time AMA Grand National Champion Jay Springsteen, Garth Brow, David 'Bones' Aldana, 6-Time VDTRA Champion 'Wild Will' Kelley and a host of others all arrived to do battle on Indy's southeast side.

The Marion County Fairgrounds-hosted event, sponsored by Harley-Davidson of Bloomington, was the first of it's kind at the great little facility, and the riders that came from near and far all seemed to love and enjoy their time on the track, and riding some of the Bultaco Astros that many had utilized in short track racing throughout their careers.

But it was Morehead who stole the show, in spite of the best efforts from many including Springsteen, Aldana, Brow, Atherton and runner-up Morgan. Morehead ran away after the first lap and never looked back to take the checkered flag in front of a big crowd at Mid-America and a big handful of adoring fans who obviously remembered the pressure the Ohio resident used to put on the competition in his days racing in Grand National Championship events.

Aldana, who had made the trip to Indy via the Stockton, KS. fair races the weekend prior, showed up at the track with a rolling race shop in the form of a 20-foot 'v' nose trailer behind his Ford pickup, housing not only his four Honda 350 singles flat trackers but a well-organized shop complete with everything to tear into a motor, hone a cylinder and weld and repair pretty much any damages that could incur while racing. This man has been doing this a long time, and ole 'Bones' had a shop that some present-day young racers would be envious of.

Steve Morehead battles with former AMA Grand National #15 Garth Brow at Mid-America in their Bultaco Astro Cup heat race (above), one of the first of the evening. Brow got the jump off the start, but the 58 year old Morehead kept on his tail and made a daring but excellent move up the inside coming out of turn 2 on lap 2 and was never headed from there.
Little known fact: Morehead still fits into his leathers that he wore in AMA Grand National competition up until his retirement after the 1999 season, and they still look almost-new. The AMA Hall of Famer spent 26 seasons contesting the AMA Grand National Championship Series and when he retired, he was ranked 10th in the all-time wins list of competition.

White Pigeon, MI. resident Dave Atherton (the father of former AMA Grand National #23 Kevin 'Cupcake' Atherton and Brad Baker's tuner on the Dodge Brothers Racing team in the AMA GNC Series) ended up in the 3rd-place spot in the BAC main on one of his pristine machines he brought to the track from his home. Atherton is known to have a pole barn full of vintage racers at home and this one was a beauty.

Art 'The Dart' Randall leads Brow #15 coming out of turn 4 during one of the event's early practice sessions. Randall, a long time supporter of flat track racing, made the trip to Indy from his home in St. Louis, along with close to a dozen of his Bultaco Astros in his collection, which he helped to supply some of the riders with for the event. Art owns a restaurant and pub in St. Louis close to Busch Stadium called 'Kilroy's' which houses several of his spotless machines that are on display. If you get the chance to make a Cardinals game (the only time that Kilroy's is open) make sure you stop by to check out part of his museum on display.

One of the all-time crowd favorites gets ready to head out for one of the evening's practices as Mid-America. Former 3-Time AMA Grand National Champion Jay Springsteen had one of the biggest crowds of people hovering around him wherever he went that evening, other than fan-favorite Aldana.

Aldana talks in his rolling transporter and shop with one of his many fans during a break in the on-track action at Mid-America.

Dave 'Bones' Aldana gets ready to head out for practice for the Vintage 60+ class at Mid-America on one of his Honda 350 single machines. Aldana won his heat and main going away, each by just shy of a straightaway, masterfully taking the lead right off the bat in turn one and running away, never bothering to look back.

The crowd enjoyed seeing one of the all-time greats of the sport show up, including this fan, as I had the pleasure of hosting the Fayetteville, GA. resident over the weekend, and man were there some stories to be told and heard. 'Bones' spent time the next evening at the Indy Mile as the race's Grand Marshal, a race he won during the 1970 season while riding for the BSA factory, when the event was a 30-lap mile event.

Aldana's rolling race shop as seen from the rear, with a glimpse of one of two of his machines he raced and practiced on at Mid-America sitting off to the side on the right. Aldana stated he could do everything including rebuilding a bike's engine and honing a cylinder if necessary, complete with a bench vise, extra spares, welder and torches.

Dave Atherton #15x and Dave 'Bones' Aldana #13 mix it up during one of the heat races for the Bultaco Astro Cup event, part of round 10 of the 2013 AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series held at Mid-America this year for the first time. Atherton was on one of his machines while Aldana was on a borrowed mount from Ken McGuire, who also showed up with a host of Bultacos for the event.

Summerville, SC's Garth Brow gets ready to head out for one of Mid-America's Bultaco Astro Cup practice sessions. Brow made the trip from his home in the southeast and ended up finishing in the 13th-place spot while battling a suspected electrical malady that hurt his finishing position in both his heat, semi and main results.

Riders line up for the Bultaco Astro Cup main event at the Marion County Fairgrounds-hosted event on Indy's southeast side, including former 2000 AMA Grand National Champion Joe Kopp, Aldana on the #13 Astro and Springer, just behind Aldana, on the #9 mount. Other than the textbook runaway put in by winner Morehead, Springer and Aldana had the crowd roaring over their battle for the 4th-place spot in the main. Springer got the nod, with 'Bone's finishing in the 5th-place position. Although Kopp had never ridden a two-stroke machine fitted with a compression release, the former AMA Grand National Champion had no problem adapting and won his heat right off. Kopp ended up with an 11th-place finish in the BAC main event.

All in all, Mid-America Speedway's hosting of the 2013 'Night Before the Indy Mile' was a big success for team operations head/track president Jim Terchila and his team. With a big crowd on hand for the large racing weekend in town for the 6th Annual Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP event, round 8 of the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles Grand National Championship, the stunt show and Motorcycles on Meridian being held each evening in the downtown area, fans had a lot of choices in which to spend their hard-earned money and time over the weekend.

Those that attended the 'Night Before the Indy Mile' at Mid-America weren't disappointed and saw some of the past, present and future stars of flat track put on a great show that won't soon be forgotten, and many should now be making plans to return for the 2014 version to be held at Mid-America Speedway on Indy's southeast side.
