Reflections of the 5th Annual Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP Weekend August 17-19, 2012

The 5th Annual Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP Weekend saw the first repeat winner at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway when 2010 winner Dani Pedrosa on the #26 Repsol Honda RC213V took home the top honors on a weekend that will be remembered for the Spaniard's second win on the oldest race track in America, but also for the carnage that littered the track and paddock long after the checkered flag had fallen.

Pedrosa is seen at high speed rocketing down the long front straight at Indy during the first practice session of the weekend, where speeds of 208 MPH were recorded during the 3-day weekend in the series' first visit to Indy in the 1000cc era of MotoGP World Championship racing.

Pedrosa's team mate, Casey Stoner on the #1 Repsol Honda (and the defending MotoGP Champion and Indy winner) faired much worse then his double-winning team mate over the long weekend at The Brickyard.  After a seriously nasty highside during the qualifying round that saw the Australian suffer serious ankle injuries, Stoner at first wasn't expected to contest the weekend.  But like the tough competitor he is, the #1 machine soldiered on to a strong 4th-place finish at Indy.

Stoner however had to sit out this weekend's Brno event and is hopeful for the next round at San Marino on September 14-16.  This was Stoner's last trip to the track he loves to hate as he announced his retirement from the sport earlier this summer after the 2012 season.

Honda was one of the many manufacturers on-hand for the 5th Annual Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP Weekend, and one of theirs and all of the displays that was catching a lot of interest was the new Honda CBR1000RR.

Ben Spies' 2012 season troubles continued at Indy in spite of his 4th-place qualifying effort on the #11 Yamaha Factory YZR-M1.  Elbowz got a monster start at the drop of the green in the MotoGP main event and led a few laps before being passed by eventual-winner Dani Pedrosa.  But while giving chase, the motor expired on the long front straight and was highly reminiscent of his 2012 season in which he has suffered a series of maladies and get-offs.

On a brighter side for the 2009 World Superbike and 3-Time AMA Superbike Champion, the 2011 Petronas Factory Yamaha M1 that Spies rode at the Laguna Seca and Indy rounds last year graced the Yamaha display in the infield at IMS.  The paint job helped Yamaha celebrate their 50th anniversary.

Andreas Dovizioso continued his season of superior runs on the #4 Monster Energy Tech 3 Yamaha M1 with a 3rd-place finish at the 2012 version of the Red Bull MotoGP Weekend. Dovi signed between Sunday's Brno round and Indy to ride for the Ducati factory in the 2013 season alongside America's own Nicky Hayden.

You can't talk MotoGP without making a shoutout to and about 9-Time World Champion and 7-Time MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi.  The Italian was the first Ducati home at Indy, bringing the #46 Marlboro Factory Ducati GP12 home in the 7th-place spot.

Rossi was also on-hand at the Lucas Oil Indy Mile on Saturday, August 18, hanging out with Tommy Hayden and Chris Carr on the stage as a special guest of Family Events Promotions and AMA Pro Flat Track.  He also went home with his own Harley-Davidson XR750 to ride on his backyard track, and it was reported that Carr helped to broker the deal for the popular MotoGP icon.

Ducati Island at The Brickyard was at the usual level of excitement that is seen amongst the 'Ducatista' fans and one of the nicest displays at the track was set up for the Ducati compatriots and other fans on-hand throughout the weekend.  The display included two street versions of two of the three Ducatis that 3-Time World Superbike Champion Troy Bayliss rode to his titles, and a Ben Bostrom #1 Vance & Hines Ducati from the '99 AMA Superbike Championship season.  Can you say drool...............

The #17 Cardion AB Motoracing Ducati GP12 of Karel Abraham and the #69 Marlboro Ducati Factory GP12 enter the garage area at Indianapolis after the end of the first practice session of the weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway-hosted 2012 MotoGP World Championship round.

In another case of two ends of the spectrum, Abraham brought the satellite machine home in the 8th-place spot (and just under 11 seconds behind Rossi) while The Kentucky Kid saw air/sky/ground in a brutal crash during qualifying that saw him suffer serious wrist injuries and miss his first home race in the five years that the series has visited Indy.  It was a sad weekend for fans of the popular former '06 MotoGP World Championship and former '02 AMA Superbike Champion.

Teknic Leathers had one of the coolest displays on-hand in the Gasoline Alley vendors area at IMS, which among others included a pair of Miguel Duhamel's leathers from his season of racing the Harley-Davidson VR1000 in the '94 AMA Superbike Championship and a pair of Kurtis Roberts' leathers from his days with the Erion Racing Honda team in the early '00s in the AMA Superbike Championship.  Alongside are a set of Aaron Yates' leathers from one of his years with the Yoshimura Suzuki team and John Hopkins' leathers from his days with the Rizla Suzuki MotoGP squad.

In what was a joint effort among IMS, AMA Pro Flat Track and Family Event Promotions, the promoters of the 2012 Lucas Oil Indy Mile on August 18, 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Saddlemen Rookie of the Year Brad Baker and Bryan Smith were on-hand Friday afternoon, August 17 to sign autographs for the fans and talk about the next night's great racing at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.  AMA Pro Flat Track announcer Scottie Duebler talks with the boys while Baker's #12 Dodge Brothers XR750 and Smith's #42 Crosley/Howerton/Eaken Kawasaki sit on display for the several hundred fans that showed up to talk to the two stars of the greatest racing series on wheels in the world.

For the first time ever, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway hosted a garage at the Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP round called the Social Media Garage.  Set-up for the fans with several laptops, big screens showing the action and racing simulators, the lounge-like atmosphere was a very cool place for fans to come and hang out and chat with some invitees that were on-hand to cover the action at the track for Twitter, Facebook and their respective websites.

Stu's Shots was one of the five invited guests to this special event, thanks to Cassie Conklin with the Indianapolis Motor Speeway, along with Lance Lau, Terry Hampton, Daniel Lo and Larry Lawrence of The Rider Files.com.  It was due to LL's kind mention of Stu's Shots to Ms. Conklin that we were invited and I owe a big thanks to both for allowing me to attend this special event, which included among other perks full access to any stand in the house and free premium parking and credentials that made it a breeze to enter and exit the track I have been stalking since the spring of '69 when I was just a wee junior high student still living in Iowa.

For what was started this year as an experiment with the Indy 500 and The Brickyard 400, the special event was a big hit with fans and with Stu's Shots.  I was and still am humbled by the invite and the great treatment that was given me and I appreciate the efforts of all in putting this super weekend together!

In a finishing touch to wrap-up the 5th Annual Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP Weekend review, and a shallow and self-serving mode of self-promotion, 'Stu's Shots' was advertised inside the Social Media Garage over the weekend along with the other four invitees with scrolling LED read-outs of each of our respective sites and/or Twitter feeds.

I'm still not quite sure to know what to do with seeing my name in lights for the first time in my life, but I guarantee you I won't let it go to my head!

Again, a big thanks to the folks at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a great weekend of racing and for the special invite.  It was a blast and again a stellar running of another World Class event.

Bravo and thank you!

Reflections From the 4th Annual RedBull Indianapolis MotoGP Weekend

A quartet of riders hammers down the long front straight at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the third practice session for round 12 of the 2011 MotoGP World Championship.  Although announced attendance was down somewhat from last year, the crowd on Saturday actually appeared much larger then figures released.  IMS and Dorna were to have announced yesterday the return in 2012 of the MotoGP World Championship, but according to Mel Harder of IMS, this announcement has been delayed while 'final tweaks' to the schedule are being hammered out.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ben Spies motors off on his scooter behind the Yamaha Factory Racing team's garage after the 3rd practice session on Saturday, August 27.  Spies had a great race after qualifying later in the day on the front row, and being bumped back to 9th on the start of yesterday's final.  He rode like the champ he is, and most likely will be in MotoGP, to bring the 50th anniversay Yamaha home in 3rd behind winner Casey Stoner and runner-up and 2010 Indy winner Dani Pedrosa.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kenny Roberts' 1980 YZR500 championship winning machine sits on display under one of the Yamaha tents.  Roberts rode some demo laps on this very machine at Laguna Seca last month, but unfortunately it was 'display only' at Indy.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alvaro Bautista does some interesting stretching exercises as he rolls out of pitlane on the #19 Rizla Suzuki GSV-R during the 3rd practice session on Saturday morning, August 27.  Whatever they were, they definitely seemed to work as Bautista brought the machine home in the 6th spot in Sunday's round 12 action of the 2011 MotoGP World Championship race at Indy.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mike Lloyd of the Lloyd Brothers Motorsports Ducati team had the team's AMA Pro Flat Track machine on display inside the massive Ducati Island area over the course of the weekend.  In both passes I made to try and get a chance to say hi, Mike was busy with the fans talking about the machine that currently sits in the 5th overall position in the point standings with rider Brad Baker.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nicky Hayden appears all smiles en route to Ducati Island at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on August 27.  Hayden had his worst-ever weekend at IMS in finishing 15th and only scoring a single point after choosing a tire that was too soft, even in the cooler Sunday final temperatures.  The Kentucky Kid spent the better part of his off-time away from the bike hanging with friends and family and signing autographs for many a fan over the weekend.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As Dean Adams from SuperBikePlanet.com puts it, the 'bike that wouldn't die' was on display in the Yamaha display vendor area over the weekend at Indy.  This is the same replica TZ750 that The King rode some demo laps on at the Lucas Oil Indy Mile in 2009.  I never get tired of seeing this, even after 36 years passing!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Colin Edwards' #5 Monster Energy Tech 3 Yamaha M1 sits on display under one of the Yamaha tents at the RedBull Indianapolis MotoGP round.  The Texas Tornado was inundated with questions as to his plans for the 2012 season, but wasn't able to shine a light on his future over the weekend.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One of the late Gary Nixon's former Triumph Triples was on display in the paddock area at IMS over the weekend.  Former racer Steve Parrish also did a lap of honor on the bike to pay homage to his departed friend, who passed away in early August.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Monster Energy umbella girls kept many a race fan very happy while posing behind the MotoGP garages at Indianapolis, including long-time race fan and compatriot/best bud of Stu's Shots, Tim Powers.  Powers is also a former National WERA champion from back in the mid-late '80s.  Smiles all around!

Figuring out the MotoGP credentials board takes an advanced degree in algebra.  WTF!?

Ben Spies Takes Maiden MotoGP Win at Assen TT

Ben Spies on the #1 Rockstar/Makita/Yoshimura American Suzuki-sponsored GSX-R1000 heads into the carousel towards the end of lap 1 of race 2, leading the pack during the Wiseco 100 Superbike Doubleheader at Mid Ohio in August of 2008, the premier event of the Honda Super Cycle Weekend presented by Dunlop Tire round of the AMA Superbike Championship presented by Parts Unlimited.  Following closely on his heels is team mate and then 6-Time AMA Superbike Champion Mat Mladin on his #6 like-sponsored GSXR.  Mladin would go on to win the battle, but Spies would go on to win the war and at the end of the year capture his 3rd AMA Superbike Championship, adding to his '07 AMA Superstock Championship earned in AMA Pro Road Racing over the course of the previous three years.

Just behind Mladin (and partially obscured) is Jamie Hacking on the #2 Monster Energy Kawasaki ZX-10R, Neil Hodgson on the #100 Honda/Parts Unlimited/Suomy-backed CBR1000RR, with team mate Miguel Duhamel on the #17 American Honda/Shark/Joe Rocket-sponsored CBR.  Aaron Yates on the #20 Jordan Brand/American Suzuki-sponsored GSX-R1000 tries to keep the front pack in sight as he just comes into the shot on far left.

Spies control and mastery in all-types of competition over the course of the last seven years of premier-class racing has seen him accomplish things we mortals can only dream of in the sport of high-speed road racing around the world.  After leaving the AMA Series after the end of the '08 season, Elbowz arrived on the World Superbike Championship Series (WSBK) scene, and immediately let everyone know his lack of knowledge of race circuits was not going to leave him deterred.  By the end of the '09 season, he had won the WSBK Championship in a route, winning half the races on the season and 11 of 14 poles on the year.  Spies then left the Yamaha World Superbike team to ride alongside fellow-Texan and Mr. Popularity in the MotoGP Championship, Colin Edwards, on the Tech 3 Yamaha satellite team, winning the Rookie of the Year Award along the way and scoring podiums and a pole position at one of his home events, the RedBull Indianapolis MotoGP round last August, less then six miles down the road from the home of Stu's Shots.

Now riding alongside of 2010 MotoGP World Champion Jorge Lorenzo on the Yamaha Factory team, the Texas Terror has had a rough start to the 2011 campaign, with three DNF's in the first six rounds.  Today at Assen, however, in what were described as 'treacherous conditions' by journalists throughout the world, the quiet man from Texas made a steep leap in the learning curve process by winning his maiden MotoGP race in The Netherlands, a track Spies noted was very special to him 'after having watched all his heroes' race and win there over the years.

Today, Spies added to his hero status to us mere mortals by winning his first of what are sure to be MANY more race wins in the premier road racing series in the world.  And probably left even a few of us tearing up seeing him get that first big win in the process.  Congrats Ben for a job well done!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ben Spies took the top spot on the box earlier today for his first win in the MotoGP World Championship at the Assen TT round in The Netherlands, breaking his cherry in the premier road racing series in the world after only 28 events.  The Yamaha Factory Racing pilot took his 50th Annivesary-laiden YZF-M1 #11 machine home to the victory over 2011 season dominator Casey Stoner on the #27 Repsol Honda by over 7.6 seconds, setting the fastest lap of the race on the 12th of 26 laps along the way.  Rounding out the podium at the Iveco Assen TT was the #4 Repsol Honda of Andrea Dovizioso another 20-some seconds back from team mate Stoner.

Spies caught the break he needed less then half a lap into the race.  After coming off the middle of the front row, 2010 MotoGP World Champion (and team mate to Spies) Jorge Lorenzo tried to make the pass on Elbowz, only to run wide in the first turn, allowing Spies the margin necessary to stay ahead of the mayhem that was to befall his team mate and allow him to gap the field almost immediately into the event.  Polesitter Marco Simoncelli on the San Carlo Honda highsided his #58 machine shortly thereafter just in front of Lorenzo's #1 machine, causing both to go down while the pack snaked by.  Both remounted, and in a ride that champions are made of, Lorenzo blasted back through the field to eventually finish in the 6th position, just over a second behind 5th place finisher Nicky Hayden on the #69 Marlboro Ducati.

7-Time MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi overcame his 11th starting spot to garner 4th place, only his second time on the season inside the top 4.  Rossi's struggles with the Ducati GP11 have been well-documented on the year, and after receiving chassis updates for this round seems to be coming to grips with the needed-changes after an up-and-down weekend at Assen, and on the year overall.  Colin Edwards on the #5 Tech 3 Yamaha brought it home 7th, and Hiroshi Aoyama, filling in for injured Dani Pedrosa on the Repsol Honda, came home in the 8th spot.  Simoncelli managed to come up through the field after his first lap get-off to bring it home in 9th, and Toni Elias on the #24 LCR Honda rounded out the top 10.

Congratulations go out to Ben Spies for his maiden win in the MotoGP World Championship.  The man from Texas has now gotten that first win in his pocket and we, along with all of his fans around the world, are glad to help him celebrate.  Great ride today Ben!

Yamaha World Superbike 'Rookie' Eugene Laverty Does the Double at Monza for First-Ever WSBK Wins

Ben Spies' 2009 Sterilgarda Yamaha YZF-R1 World Superbike Championship winning machine sits on display under the Yamaha tent during the 3rd Annual RedBull Indianapolis MotoGP Weekend in August of 2010.  The former 3-Time AMA Superbike Champion and 2010 MotoGP Rookie of the Year came into the 2009 World Superbike Championship season without so much as having even seen the majority of the 14 tracks he would be racing on for the season, but went on to light the series fire in winning 14 of 28 races, as well as 17 podiums and 11 pole positions when the dust settled at the end of the year, as well as bringing home the first WSBK Championship for the tuning fork marque.
The Yamaha WSBK squad changed dramatically in the 2010 season after The Texas Terror headed over to the MotoGP World Championship, with the squad replacing Spies as well as team mate Tom Sykes with former 2-Time World Superbike Champion James Toseland and '09 World Supersport Champion Cal Crutchlow.  Crutchlow would go on to win three races on the season and finish 5th in the final year-end standings, in what would be be
For the 2011 year, the Yamaha WSBK squad again started with a new full slate on the team, bringing in 2-Time World Supersport runner-up, Irishman Eugene Laverty alongside former MotoGP castaway and former 250 GP World Champion, Italian Marco Melandri.  With only four rounds on the 13-round season for the year in the bags, the squad has already equaled it's 2010 performance with Melandri having won race 1 at the Donington round in March, and Laverty scoring his first wins as a 'rookie' by winning both rounds yesterday at Monza.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The World Superbike Championship Series visited the fastest circuit on the calendar in Monza, Italy over the weekend for round 4 of the 2011 season, and 'rookie' and new Stonex Yamaha World Superbike squad member Eugene Laverty got the double win for his first taste of the podium and first-ever wins in the premier series.  The 2-Time World Supersport Champion runner-up led 17 of 18 laps in winning race one on his #58 Yamaha R1 over defending World Superbike Champion Max Biaggi on his #1 Aprilia RSV4 Factory machine by 1.575 seconds, and then taking advantage of a miscue by Biaggi in race two, which saw Biaggi forced to complete a 'ride through' penalty for overshooting a turn while leading the race by several seconds.  Laverty also took advantage of team mate Melandri's slide on his #33 Yamaha R1 while going through the infamous Parabolica turn on the last lap run to the checkers to get around him to take the win by just .327 seconds.

The Yamaha World Superbike squad is seeing an early-season turn around after the great year the team had with Ben Spies winning the '09 crown for the team, and last year's duo of James Toseland and Cal Crutchlow only winning three rounds on the year, all by Crutchlow.  Melandri is virtually turning his career around after several dismal years in MotoGP, and Laverty is establishing himself quickly as not only a 'rookie of the year' candidate, but as a full-time front runner, as well.  After taking the lead in race one at Monza over first lap leader Troy Corser on the BMW Motorrad Motorsport S1000RR, Laverty set sail at the front to win his initial race on the WSBK calendar.

In race two, however, the Irishman was forced wide and almost involved in a first lap crash that took out Jonathan Rea on the Castrol Honda CBR1000RR, Leon Haslam on the other BMW Motorrad machine and Jacob Smrz on the Team Effenbert-Liberty Racing Ducati 1098R, and was as far back as ninth place.  Slowly working his way up the grid, as well as taking advantage of other riders' missives, Laverty finally caught team mate Melandri with roughly five laps to and the duo put in some strong and exciting laps to the end.  Looking like Melandri would take his second WSBK race on the year with Laverty right on his tail section, and while going through the Parabolica last turn, Melandri's rear tire broke loose just enough for Laverty to inch out the win by the blink of an eye.

If you haven't seen the races yet, SpeedTV in the U.S. will be replaying them on Tuesday, May 10 from 1200-1400 EDT.  Be sure to set your DVRs as both of these races were full of some great battles, let alone seeing Laverty break his cherry in the premier superbike championship in the world.  With straightaway speeds in the neighborhood of 188.5 mph at the infamous Monza circuit, the racing was fast and furious all weekend from the time practice started on Friday, May 6.

Melandri and Laverty now sit 2nd and 5th in the 2011 standings after four rounds, with series points leader Carlos Checa on top of the leaderboard on his #7 Althea Racing Ducati 1098R with 145 points.  Melandri lies 27 back, with defending WSBK Champ Biaggi in 3rd just one point behind Marco.  Jonathan Rea sits fourth with 89 points and Laverty rounds out the top five just four points back of 'Mad Max.'

The World Superbike Championship reconvenes at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah in 18 days over the Memorial Day Weekend for round five of the 2011 WSBK Championship Series, and it's going to be an exciting year again in this great series.  Stay tuned as you don't want to miss it!

WSBK Has Returned to Donington for this Weekend's Rnd 2 in the 2011 WSBK Championship

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ben Spies' #19 Sterilgarda Yamaha YZF-R1 2009 World Superbike Championship-winning machine sits on display in one of the Yamaha tent's during the Indianapolis RedBull MotoGP round in August of 2010. Spies' assault on the WSBK Championship Series in 2009 is stuff that legends are made of, winning 14 races along the way including a double round win at Donington Park. Spies was the first American WSBK Champion in seven years, following in the footsteps of fellow Texan Colin Edwards. In 28 races covering 14 events, Elbowz also managed an incredible 17 podiums, and won the pole position an astounding 11 times on the season.
Spies has been long-gone from the WSBK scene, instead progressively moving up the ladder in MotoGP after being named the 2010 Rookie of the Year, and now a team mate to '10 MotoGP Jorge Lorenzo on the Factory Yamaha M1. Yamaha's World Superbike team this year again has been completely revamped, and riders Marco Melandri and Eugene Laverty are piloting the #33 and #59 R1s in the 2011 chase. Both riders timed into the top four in the first timed qualifying session earlier today in Donington, and both look to improve on their great results from Philip Island a couple of weeks ago.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
World Superbike Championship round two kicked off earlier today at Donington Park in England for what is looking to be another stellar year in the world production championship. With seven manufacturers contesting the series, competition is again at an all-time premium in the hotly contested championship. With Aprilia's Mad Max Biaggi wearing the #1 proudly on his Aprilia RSV4 Factory machine, the series is seeing the great racing that it has become known for, especially over the last 5-6 years.

The FIM and WSBK also announced the other day that beginning with this second round (of 13 total for 2011), that on-bike cameras will now be part of the mix for the worldwide television and internet viewing audiences. Eight bikes total will carry cameras throughout each race weekend which will surely add to the already great coverage we see in the series.

SpeedTV carries the WSBK Championship on a tape-delayed basis here in the U.S. and will be showing both races back-to-back this Sunday, March 27 at 1500 EDT. The second qualifying practice fires off tomorrow morning at 0645 and 0945 EDT/US and Superpole 1 qualifying rolls off at 1100 EDT tomorrow. You can view both via WSBK's Live Timing and Scoring link (available below) as you can the races themselves on Sunday at 0800 and 1130 EDT/US.

Ben Spies Named 2010 MotoGP Rookie of The Year

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Monster Energy Tech III Yamaha YZR-M1 of Ben Spies sits on display in the Yamaha tent at the Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP round at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on August 28, 2010. The '06-'08 AMA Superbike Champion and '09 World Superbike Champion added another mark to the 'can-do' list yesterday with a fine run home in 5th place in round 16 action at Philip Island in Australia, which gave him enough points to earn the 2010 MotoGP Rookie of The Year Award.
With two rounds remaining in the series, Spies has had a phenomenal year in his 'rookie' season in the bigs of MotoGP. With two podiums (2nd at Indy, 3rd in Great Britain), a pole in Indy and only two DNF's on the year, Elbowz is currently 6th in the 2010 MotoGP World Championship standings with 163 points. As announced at the Indy round at the end of August, he will be moving up to the Yamaha Factory M1 squad alongside 2010 MotoGP World Champion Jorge Lorenzo for the 2011 season.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The headline to this story could almost be viewed as a redundant statement the way that Ben Spies has landed in the MotoGP World Championship Series in 2010, but without really being so the '09 World Superbike Champion did have to earn the title this year in what is and has been his 'rookie' series in the highest level of motorcycle road racing in the world. Coming into the 2010 season, Elbowz had the advantage of being on the top satellite Yamaha team in the series with the Monster Energy Tech 3 team, but he had also only been on about a third of the 18 tracks that the series runs on. That and getting used to a prototype machine compared to having run production-based Superbikes for the better part of his career.

But not too many people had any doubts as to what Mr. Spies could and would do, even racing amongst the top echelon of riders in the world. But Number Eleven does have what it takes to race with the best and even before the mid-point of the season, let alone the series stop in Indy where he wowed the crowd and the series' combatants with a pole position in only his 12th official ride in active competition in MotoGP (Ben rode one race at the end of '09 with Sterilgarda livery under the Tech 3 tent, and Indy was this year's 11th round.)

After winning the '06-'08 AMA Superbike Championship and the '07 AMA Superstock Championship, Spies headed to Europe to contend the 2009 World Superbike Championship, where in his 'rookie' year, he won the championship while riding for the Sterilgarda Yamaha team. Along the way he won 7 consecutive poles and 11 overall in the 14 round series, took the top spot on the podium in 14 of 28 races, and added two second-place finishes and one third-place finish to his results for the year. It was also the first American to win a World Superbike Championship since Colin Edwards in 2002, and he gave Yamaha their very first title in the series in the 22 years that the series had been competing through the 2009 season.

We can look forward to hearing more about Ben this year, as there are still the last two rounds in Portugal the last weekend in October, and then the series closes the 2010 season out the first weekend in November in Valencia. And then on to the Yamaha bigs for the 2011 season as a team mate to newly-crowned 2010 MotoGP World Champion Jorge Lorenzo.

Great job Ben, we're all real proud of you man and great to see you up there in the bigs having a good go of it! Can't wait to see the results for 2011 on the factory M1.

Reflections of the 3rd Annual Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP 2010 Weekend

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2010 Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP winner Dani Pedrosa's Team Repsol Honda HRC RC212V sits outside the garages during the pitwalk on the first day of the big event held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Pedrosa rode a flawless race in winning his third MotoGP race of the season, a first for the Spaniard after having won two races each season since signing with the team in 2005. His win was also his first at Indy after leading last year's race only to crash and remount to put in a magnificent charge back through the ranks to finish 10th.
The '03 125CC World Champion and '04-'05 250CC World Champion is still unsigned with Honda for the 2011 season, but his status is listed as 'almost certain' to re-sign and remain with the squad for what would be his sixth season riding for HRC, and with the weekend announcement that MotoGP will return to Indy in 2011 he should be back to defend Sunday's win in August 2011. With the momentum of winning the Indy event, look for DP26 to finish the season strong against title leader Jorge Lorenzo.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ben Spies took the pole and finished second to winner Dani Pedrosa by 3.575 seconds on his Tech 3 Monster Energy Yamaha YZR-M1. In his 'rookie' season, Elbowz managed to put it on the box for the second time in 11 rounds to go along with his third from earlier in the season at Silverstone. It was also his second time starting from the front row in the premier MotoGP class, and over the weekend the official announcement was made that he would be moving up to the full factory Yamaha squad next season.
Team mate Colin Edwards fared much worse as tire problems seemed to be his undoing and he retired after 12 laps into the event. It was mentioned over the weekend that Colin is now expected to stay on the French team for the 2011 season with Brit Cal Crutchlow moving up from the WSBK squad to the seat Ben will be vacating.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Team Marlboro Ducati Desmosedici GP10's of Casey Stoner #27 and Nicky Hayden #69 sit in and out of the garages in preperation for the 3rd Annual Red Bull Indy MotoGP event, the 11th round of the 2010 MotoGP season. Stoner, the '07 MotoGP World Champion, had an awful weekend, crashing in practice as well as out of the final event on Sunday afternoon. He's surely at the point the way his season has gone that he is looking to 2011 with the move to Honda.
The Kentucky Kid had a much better all-around weekend, although his final result of 6th place Sunday afternoon was not what he, the team or even the fans wanted. After qualifying third and starting on the front row, Nicky was just getting into race rhythm when his left knee got snagged on the track, tearing the velcro and puck off of his leathers and wearing a hole in his leathers as well, effectively ending any type of real charge to the front.
But good things did indeed happen over the weekend as Nicky was the Grand Marshall at the Lucas Oil Indy Mile running of the AMA Pro Flat Track K&N Filters Grand National Championship. It was announced at Indy, officially, that Nicky has been resigned to the Ducati team for not only 2011, but 2012 as well. And then #69 jumped on a Lloyd Brothers Ducati 1098 (that had been set-up with a special '#69' number plate with stars and stripes) and proceeded to run off a couple of laps the reported 'low 39s' that would have qualified him around 8th or 9th in the Expert Twins race. And then he told the crowd it had been since 2002 he had even been on a real dirt tracker at a real dirt track ("....other than Earl's Lane...." back home.) Oh, and he did mention after wowing the crowd that he WOULD be back to flat track one day. Very cool.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The French LCR Honda RC212V of Randy DePuniet sits outside the team garage as one of the lovely umbrella girls does her thing to entertain the crowd during the pitwalk on Friday, August 27. The team didn't have a good weekend as the mostly-left turn track took it's toll on DePuniet's healing left leg, not to mention the heat and the slippery track surface that they never were able to completely overcome. After starting the weekend out in the final spot of the first practice session, Randy finished 13th in the MotoGP event on Sunday, and remains in the 8th position in the standings. Talks are strong that he will remain with the Honda satellite team again for the 2011 season, in what will be his third year with the team.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The 125CC World Championship title fight was tightened up after Indy thanks to a crash by points leader Marc Marquez on the #93 Red Bull Derbi team entry, although he did remount to finish 10th to salvage valuable points to series runner-up and winner on the day Nicolas Terol on the #40 Bancaja Aspar Aprilia (L) who won by 4.995 seconds. They now stand 172-168 in the championship with seven rounds remaning in the season. Terol's team mate Bradley Smith, who campaigns the #38 Bancaja Aprilia (R) crashed out at Indy but remains a solid fourth in the season standings.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toni Elias #24 Gresini Racing Moriwaki Moto2 machine sits in the garage at Indy on Friday. Elias, who signed with the team in the off season after contesting the MotoGP class last year, can't turn a wheel wrong in the new class with the control Honda motors, as he pulled out the win on Sunday by .405 seconds and now leads the inaugaral Moto2 World Championship standings by a whopping 67 points over Andrea Iannone who finished a solid fourth on the day. Both survived the crazy initial start that saw eight riders crash in two seperate groups in the same turn 2 of the event. After numerous delays, the race was shortened from 26 to 17 laps since it took so much time to clean up the carnage.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roger Lee Hayden's #34 American Honda/Erion Racing/Moriwaki Engineering Indy wild card Moto2 machine sits in the pitlane as the Kevin Schwantz-led Erion crew discuss the weekend to come. Little did they know that with the massive effort put forth that 17th place on the weekend would be the result. Although for the way the race started, with Roger one of the eight involved in the initial turn two melee, that finish probably isn't too bad. Not only did he take a nasty fall, but his head was run over as well (and ruining what was one of the nicest special event helmets ever seen!) and the bike was left in pieces. After scrambling to get it together, the team wasn't even sure they were going to be allowed to restart at all, and once the dust (and confusion) cleared, RLH was able to bring it home. Down on the weekend from the start, they were never able to capitalize the way that they, and the fans, had hoped. But team manager and '93 500CC World Champion Kevin Schwantz told SuperBikePlanet.com that they are 'very hopeful' to put together a full time team for an assault on the 2011 Moto2 World Championship, with an American rider.
A very special shout out and congratulations goes out to the other American rider who was given a wild card entry into the Indianapolis Moto2 round. Former AMA Road Racing competitor Jason DiSalvo took a Team GP Tech FTR machine from the 26th qualifying spot all the way through the woods and on to Grandmother's house to a fine ninth place finish. Staying out of trouble on both starts and working his way through the field, Jason put on some great racing in making passes where he was strongest on the track. The SpeedTV crew covering the race said there was a good chance he may be invited to finish the season for the team, but I have heard no more on that statement. He should be, though, as Jason rode like a champ and was obviously in fine form on Sunday.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The lovely Red Bull girls smile for the cameras in the Gasoline Alley garage area at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. With the world economy still suffering, the vendor and crowd count were down for the weekend, but attendance numbers were reported to be in the 69K range for the final events on Sunday, after high 70s in 2009 and around 93K the initial year in 2008. There was a great show to be seen by all.

Of note, there was a tragic loss at the track when young Peter Lenz died as a result of his injuries sustained on the warm up lap of the USGPRU Moriwaki MD250H support race. A very freak accident that could have happened on any track and involving any rider, this young man was a multi-time competitor in this and many other series, and at the young age of 13 had already won several championships in other road racing series. God Speed Peter and our condolences go out to his family, friends and fans.

Ben Spies Ready to Go WFO at Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP Round This W/E

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Eric Bostrom on the #32 Ducati Austin/Parts Unlimited/Dunlop/Red Bull-sponsored 999R leads Ben Spies on the #11 American Suzuki/Yoshimura/Motorex/Dunlop-backed GSX-R1000 early in the running of race one of the AMA Superbike Series weekend at Mid Ohio in July of 2005. Spies got around EBoz in race one to finish second to winner Mat Mladin with EBoz rounding out the podium. The youngest of the Boz Bros turned it around in Sunday's race two and won with Miguel Duhamel in second and Ben 'Elbowz' Spies bringing it home third on the day.
Elbowz went on to win the '06-'08 AMA Superbike Championship, the '09 World Superbike Championship-as a rookie-and currently sits in 7th place in the 2010 MotoGP Championship standings, having already scored a podium finish at the Silverstone round with a fine third place finish on his Monster Energy Yamaha YZR-M1. Look for Ben to be close to the top at Indy this weekend as he has enough or more experience at this track then many of the tracks that the MotoGP circus visits. With two days tire testing at the end of June of '08 for the Suzuki MotoGP squad, and then racing in the first Indy Red Bull MotoGP in September of '08, Ben will have at least an equal-or better if that is possible-advantage at IMS this weekend during round 11 action.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ben Spies is looking to step it up (again?!) at this weekend's running of the 3rd Annual Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP, round 11 of 18 of the 2010 MotoGP World Championship. Having already put it on the podium back at the Silverstone round and then qualifying on the front row at Brno two weeks ago, Ben is making the U.S. fans and his Monster Energy Yamaha squad quite proud this year. And including this weekend here in Indy, we still have eight rounds to go before he most probably is crowned the 2010 MotoGP Rookie of the Year. Not that I'm trying to throw a jinx at anyone now. Quite a performance for the satellite Monster Energy Yamaha pilot and squad to say the least.

Elbowz is looking forward to racing on U.S. soil again and also to being back at Indianapolis for his second go-around at the most famous race track in the world. Having tire tested here and competing in the first running of this event some two years ago, Ben does know the nuances of the REAL world center of racing and it's multi-surface layout. With the MotoGP track being completed in the early spring of 2008, this track does offer a variety of surface-types where everything from the original oval, the changes made from when the Formula One parade was here, and it was constructed and pieced together (so to speak) from different mixes of asphalt, making for the surface-types meeting together and offering different grip levels for traction. There have been some rumblings about those differences in grip levels as a result of the putting together of this world famous facility, but Ben knows them well from the many laps he ran here. If my memory serves me, in just the two days alone of tire testing in 2008 he ran close to 80 laps or so each day. In other words, over three race distances each day. So this should be a great weekend for him here in Indy!

One of two of the still-to-be-officially-announced worst-kept secrets left in the MotoGP silly season is where Ben will end up for the 2011 season. With '07 MotoGP World Champion Casey Stoner making his move to the Repsol Honda team official and multi-time 500CC/MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi making his move to the Marlboro Ducati team official, Ben Spies moving to the official Yamaha MotoGP team for next season should be 'officially' announced this weekend on U.S. soil at the World Capital of Racing. And of course the second of those two worst-kept secrets being the announcement-most likely this weekend as well-of Nicky Hayden staying on for another year with the Marlboro Ducati team, and his pairing again with soon-to-be-team mate Valentino Rossi.

This should be a great weekend overall, what with the 'official' announcements for two of the three American riders in the MotoGP class, the weather outlook overall is really expected to be superb and most likely the best of the three years that MotoGP has visited here at IMS. Sure has to beat '08 with the remnants of Hurricane Ike bearing down on us the final day of racing and pushing 60+ mph winds up most everyone's arse and all but spoiling the Yamaha and Boz Bros party in the infield in taking out some of the tent supports. Last year we even got some rain on Friday so it made it sketchy for not only the fans, but especially the riders during day one's on-track activities.

It's going to be great to see Ben and the boys back here for this monumental event. And since he was off killing 'em in World Superbike last year this will be his first visit since he brought the Rizla Suzuki #11 home in sixth place during the Hurricane Ike edition of the Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP round in September of 2008. It should be great for him as well as the fans, and we wish Ben as well as all of the others the best as well as the safest of racing this weekend!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Colin Young over at SpeedTV.com's Moto Racing News penned this article about Ben's season and his hopes for himself and the Monster Energy Yamaha, as well as for the U.S. fans at this weekend's running of the 3rd Annual Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP, round 11 of the 18 round MotoGP 2010 season.

Check it out, and we'll be watching for Ben, Nicky and Colin to put on a great show no matter where they end up, as well as the rest of the MotoGP traveling road show!

Mid Ohio AMA Superbike Preview--Get it All Here! (Updated 7/16/10 w/ Live Timing and Scoring)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mat Mladin on the #66 Yoshimura Makita Rockstar Suzuki GSX-R1000 leads team mate Ben Spies on the #1 machine across the stripe early in AMA Superbike race two action at Mid Ohio in 2008. Just coming out of the last corner onto the front straight is Jamie Hacking on the #2 Monster Energy Team Kawasaki ZX-10. Team Honda team mates Neil Hodgson on the #100 CBR1000RR and Miguel Duhamel on the #17 lead Aaron Yates on the Michael Jordan Motorsports #20 Suzuki GSX-R1000 as they all try to keep the front group in sight.
Since the takeover of the AMA Road Racing properties and running of the racing events by the DMG-led folks, the Superbike class has gone from a fire-breathing, 240+ HP and top-of-your-game class to Superstock heavy. With control tires and control fuel being implemented to help level the field--not a bad thing by me, it's working in WSBK!--and less-then-super Superbikes in the way of stock front suspensions-albeit the internals can be changed out-to milder-tuned and less hopped-up engines. With the racing arguably closer in the premier class, but still missing the fire that a full-blown Superbike class should have (see WSBK rules). And due to other problems such as the economy, losing sponsors and teams, the AMA Road Racing series at least appears to be making somewhat of a comeback in 2010. Though they do still need to work on the television package in respect to times shown (or not).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One of the more user-friendly tracks (in terms of fan viewing and garage-access anyway) on the AMA Road Racing schedule is the flowing 2.5+ mile track known as Mid Ohio, located just outside beautiful downtown Lexington, OH. The Trueman Family still runs the track after all these years, and their ties to one of their original Indy car sponsors in Red Roof Inns is still prominent in the building and rooftop colors.
One of the nicer advantages of viewing a race at Mid Ohio is the way they set up some of the garages on each end of the paddock with stairs and a walkway above and over-the-shoulders of the teams set up inside for the race weekend. It gives you a nice chance to view some of the teams as they prepare for the weekend-or scramble because of it, and not get in anyone's way while doing it. Overhead views seem to lay everything out for you, so to speak, as well, in giving you an idea of where everything is.
In this shot you can see Josh Herrin's Graves Motorsports Yamaha 600 Supersport machine and his team as they prepare for the day's events in the summer of 2007. Herrin can be seen at the bench in the tan cap. Herrin will be looking to extend his lead in the 2010 AMA Daytona SportBike Championship at M.O. this weekend with two races on tap. Herrin won the Daytona 200 back in March riding for Team Graves and has gradually over the course of the last four seasons proved to be a seasoned-veteran with the team on and off the track. Winning multiple races the last couple of years it's just a matter of time before he bags a championship for Yamaha and for Graves Motorsports.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Coming out of the keyhole onto the back straight at Mid Ohio, several riders run together during the first qualifying session for the AMA Formula Xtreme class in 2004.
Just outside the keyhole area the track offers camping and motorhomes and is a good high-speed vantage to watch from as the riders roll it on through the gears. The track also offers shower facilities just behind the paddock area where the safety garages and cars are. You can't miss that, just look for all the Honda's set up in racing school gear!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mid Ohio Sports Car Course, one of the oldest tracks on the current AMA Road Racing schedule that has been an annual stop since the early '80s, hosts round six of the AMA Superbike and AMA Daytona SportBike races this weekend. Also on hand will be the AMA Supersport races and the new Vance and Hines H-D XR1200 race on Sunday.

Honda Supercycle Weekend presented by Dunlop Tires is the hosting sponsor for the races that will kick off with practice sessions tomorrow at Noon EDT and continue into Saturday for race one and wrap up with race two on Sunday for the top three classes.

Links to all you need to know to follow action at Mid Ohio can be found below!

Mid Ohio has been hosting double-race Superbike rounds since the 2000 season, and this track is a great place to see a race in terms of viewing and bang-for-the-buck happenings. If you can't get excited about watching the races anywhere around this place you don't have a pulse.....

Of note for the race weekend, Eric Bostrom #32 will be returning to AMA Superbike action riding for the Cycle World/Attack Suzuki team and Doug Polen, the '91-'92 WSBK Champion and '93 AMA Superbike Champion, will also be riding a Ducati for DucShop Racing in the Daytona SportBike class. Unfortunately, Aaron Yates' leg is not mended enough for him to ride for Michael Jordan this weekend, but Canadian sensation Brett McCormick is scheduled to fill the seat of the #23 Superbike entry again after filling in for the last few rounds on Aaron's bike.
Also, #79 Blake Young is out after a massive crash in testing after the Road America round in early June, and the rider that was slated to be his replacement on the Yoshimura Suzuki squad, Josh Waters, an Australian Superbike fenom, was also injured in a testing crash a couple of weeks ago, and will not fill the seat as planned. No word if anyone will be in the seat tomorrow when first practice rolls out at 1 P.M. EDT for the Superbike class.
