AMA Pro Road Racing Previews 2012 Daytona SportBike Series & Season-Opening Daytona 200

Jake Zemke maneuvers the #98 Erion Honda Racing/Parts Unlimited/PJ-1/MTX-sponsored Honda CBR600RR through turn 14 at the Mid Ohio Sports Car Course during a qualifying session for the AMA Formula Xtreme Championship Series round at the Honda Super Cycle Weekend Presented by Dunlop Tire in July 2004.  Zemke, who would go on to win the 2008 (and final) AMA Formula Xtreme Championship, won the Daytona 200 while riding for the American Honda team in 2006.

Zemke will join former Daytona 200 winners Jason DiSalvo (2011) and John Ashmead (1989 when the 200 was a full-on Superbike event) in the field of 47 riders now pre-entered for the Saturday, March 17 endurance race.  It was just announced last week that Zemke had signed on to ride a Ducshop Racing Ducati 748 in his return to the track that he won the Rolex watch at for last year's event.  Dunlop has been working double overtime to ensure no tire problems plague the field like what were experienced during last year's event that saw the 200 shorted to the Daytona 147.

You can read the full preview and press release below for this year's Daytona 200 and AMA Pro Daytona SportBike Series Championship.

AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike:
2012 Season-Opening DAYTONA® 200 Week Preview

71st Running of Historic Race to Air Saturday, March 17 at 2:30 p.m.ET/11:30 a.m. PT on SPEED

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 13, 2012) - The 2012 AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike season kicks off this weekend from the high banks of Daytona International Speedway, with 47 competitors entered to take part in the 71st running of the historic DAYTONA® 200. America's longest-running endurance motorcycle road race, the DAYTONA® 200 was first held on the shores of Daytona Beach in 1937. Today, the 200-mile, 57-lap race pits man against machine in a demanding battle on the 3.51-mile traditional motorcycle course at the famed speedway.

Practice and qualifying for this year's event will be held on Thursday, March 15 and Friday, March 16, with the start of the race scheduled for Saturday, March 17 at 1:00 p.m. local time.

In last year's contest, fortune was looking down upon Jason DiSalvo as the always-impressive Team Latus crew persevered during a red-flag situation to repair the No. 40 Ducati 848 and get the Batavia, N.Y. native back in the show for the race's final laps. DiSalvo didn't disappoint, earning victory as the sun began to set on the high banks. For 2012, DiSalvo returns with the same team and a different brand to begin his 2012 AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike title fight. Paying homage an American motorcycle racing legend, DiSalvo's helmet, leathers and Team Latus Motors Racing Triumph Daytona 675 will feature a one-off design scheme for Daytona in the style of the classic, championship-winning No. 9 Triumph Triple ridden by the late Gary Nixon.

Grid positions for the DAYTONA® 200 will be determined by the combined results of two timed qualifying sessions scheduled for Friday, March 16 at 8:45 a.m. and later that same day at 1:10 p.m. The DAYTONA® 200 Pole Award, and the accompanying Rolex Daytona Cosmograph, will be given to the pole position winner at noon on Saturday, March 17 during opening ceremonies for the 71st running of the historic 57-lap, 200-mile race.

Jake Zemke, winner of the 2006 DAYTONA® 200 and of last year's DAYTONA® 200 Pole Award, will also be back at Daytona on a new brand. The Californian led the majority of the 2011 DAYTONA® 200 before finishing the race in third and has joined forces with Ducshop to compete aboard the No. 98 Ducshop Racing Ducati 848 in the 2012 season. Italian Dario Marchetti will compete aboard the team's No. 23 Ducshop Racing Ducati 848 entry.

The importance of the team component to success in the DAYTONA® 200 is often underestimated. As the only event on the calendar that requires pit stops, with all of the intricacies of quick tire changes and safe refueling, it's easy to overlook the fact that the race is often decided by just fractions of a second - last year DiSalvo had an official margin of victory of just 0.029 seconds over Vesrah Suzuki's Cory West. West will be looking to improve by one position this year and top the podium on the No. 57 Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki GSX-R600, racing with and against new teammate and GoPro Daytona SportBike rookie Benny Solis (No. 35 Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki Team Suzuki GSX-R600) for the duration of the season.

Following a successful bid in AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike, 2010 AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike Champion Martin Cardenas returns to the class aboard the No. 36 GEICO Suzuki GSX-R600. Cardenas' last result in the DAYTONA® 200 came in 2009, when he finished ninth. That ninth place finish isn't indicative of the Colombian's innate ability however, which becomes apparent when noting the 17 victories he earned over three years in the top tiers of AMA Pro Road Racing competition, including a rare maiden victory in his debut National Guard SuperBike season last year. Dane Westby, riding the No. 5 M4 Broaster Chicken Suzuki GSX-R600, poses an equally-significant threat and both riders' teams stem from the same racing DNA, well-known for being some of the paddock's most experienced endurance racing teams.

Another team with a strong history in endurance racing is Graves Yamaha. This year, the team's impressive two-rider stable of debut-race winners includes Cameron Beaubier (No. 6 Yamaha Extended Service, Graves, Yamaha YZF-R6) and Garrett Gerloff (No. 8 Yamaha Extended Service, Graves, Yamaha YZF-R6). Beaubier is no stranger to victory at Daytona, having earned a victory in his first AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport race in the 2010 season, and Gerloff's Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport debut race likewise ended in victory at New Jersey Motorsports Park last year.

The recently-created RoadRace Factory Red Bull Team also has a solid two-rider GoPro Daytona SportBike roster which is sure to be at the front when the checkers fall. JD Beach (No. 95 RoadRace Factory/Red Bull Yamaha YZF-R6) led two laps of last year's contest and finished the race in fourth, and the 2008 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup Champion has been training hard in the offseason with new teammate Jake Gagne (No. 123 RoadRace Factory/Red Bull Yamaha YZF-R6). Gagne is a GoPro Daytona SportBike rookie whose accolades also include a Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup Championship, earned two years after Beach in 2010.

LTD Racing's Huntley Nash (No. 75 LTD Racing Yamaha YZF-R6) earned two Top 10s last year and now has a full season of GoPro Daytona SportBike under his belt. Beginning at Daytona, LTD Racing's second Yamaha will be piloted by 2011 SuperSport West Champion and GoPro Daytona SportBike rookie David Gaviria (No. 700 LTD Racing Yamaha YZF-R6). Gaviria's last-lap victory in 2011's SuperSport Race 2 at Daytona is a clear indication of the Colombian's riding skill and LTD Racing's two-rider force will be one to be reckoned with in 2012.

Another SuperSport West Champion will be back at Daytona in 2012, with 2010 SuperSport West Champion Joey Pascarella slotted to ride the No. 52 Project 1 Atlanta Yamaha YZF-R6. The combination of Project 1 Atlanta and Pascarella is sure to be fast; The Project 1 Atlanta Yamaha earned pole position and led 25 laps of last year's contest with Zemke at the controls and Pascarella has already demonstrated his winning ways at Daytona with a 2010 victory in SuperSport Race 2.

Tommy Aquino (No. 827 SGA Racing/Yamaha Champions Riding School Yamaha YZF-R6), who finished third in the 2011 AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike Rider Championship, will be racing in the DAYTONA® 200 round of AMA Pro Road Racing before heading overseas to race in the CEV Moto2 Spanish National Championship for Wilmax Racing. Aquino's teammate on the SGA Racing squad is Robertino Pietri (No. 16 Katra/SGA Racing Yamaha YZF-R6), who returns to full-time AMA Pro Road Racing competition following two seasons of racing in the Moto2 Championship.

Yamaha will be well represented at Daytona, with 28 of the 47 GoPro Daytona SportBike riders entered on the Yamaha YZF-R6. The most recent Yamaha added to the fold is the No. 50 Meen Motorsports Racing entry, which combines the riding talent Bobby Fong with some of the industry's best tuners.

The largest team entered in this year's contest, Triple Crown Industries will host a four-rider lineup consisting of Paul Allison (No. 20 Triple Crown Industries Yamaha YZF-R6), Michael Barnes (No. 34 Triple Crown Industries Yamaha YZF-R6), Austin Dehaven (No. 56 Triple Crown Industries Yamaha YZF-R6) and Sam Rozynski (No. 175 Triple Crown Industries Yamaha YZF-R6). Allison finished 10th in last year's DAYTONA® 200.

Fan-favorite Melissa Paris recently inked a deal that will see her competing aboard the No. 13 Sea Miracle Yamaha Racing Yamaha YZF-R6 during the 2012 AMA Pro Road Racing season. Paris, the wife of two-time, reigning AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike Champion Josh Hayes, holds the record for the highest finish for a female rider in the 71-year history of the DAYTONA® 200 with her 2009 finish of 21st place.

The bar was raised for the DAYTONA® 200 mileage record in 2011 and both the current record holder and one of his only close contenders will be at it again in 2012. Heading into last year's contest, Ricky Orlando (No. 12 Ricky Orlando Racing Kawasaki ZX-6R) was nine miles behind Rick Shaw's record of 3,728 miles but finished the race on top with 3,857 miles. 1989 DAYTONA® 200 winner John Ashmead (No. 37 Peter Brady Racing Kawasaki ZX-6R) now sits in third place with 3,679 miles, and is still mathematically within reach of claiming the record for his own if the chips fall in his favor this weekend.

The DAYTONA® 200 will be televised in a same-day delay broadcast on SPEED, scheduled for Saturday, March 17, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. ET (11:30 a.m. PT). The SPEED on-air team for AMA Pro Road Racing will include veteran motorcycle broadcaster Leigh Diffey providing play-by-play, with AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Scott Russell joining him in the booth for analysis. Longtime SPEED reporter and host Greg White will provide reports from the pits.

AMA Pro Fan Walk sessions will take place on two occasions over the race weekend, during which fans will be able to circulate on pit lane to visit with their favorite riders and teams from AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike, AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike, AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport and the AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Series. There will be a host of additional fan-specific activities and events during the DAYTONA® 200 Week at Daytona International Speedway, including demo rides, vendor offerings at the Daytona Motorcycle Marketplace and live entertainment, games and bikini contests at Thunder Alley. Another experience not to miss is the seventh-annual "Spring Dash Around Daytona" - the chance to take two laps around Daytona International Speedway's 3.56-mile road course on Saturday, March 17 immediately after the DAYTONA® 200.

Live Timing & Scoring of all on-track sessions will be available at http://live.amaproracing.com/rr/. In a great battle of the 'black and blue' brigade during the Suzuki Superbike Doubleheader weekend at Road America in June 2004, four riders go at it for the final spot on the podium, early in the going of the Lockhart-Phillips USA Formula Xtreme final as they head into turn 14.  Leaders (and eventual 1st and 2nd placers) Miguel Duhamel and Jake Zemke are already well ahead of this pack during the 10 lap event on their Honda CBR600RR machines, leaving this pack to go at it for the 3rd place spot on the podium.

Chaz Davies Wins 2011 World Supersport Championship For ParkinGO Yamaha Team

Chaz Davies bends the #57 Attack Performance/Kawasaki-sponsored ZX-6R through the turn 11 section at Road America during one of the practice sessions for the AMA Formula Xtreme Series round of the AMA Pro Road Racing Series in June 2008.  Davies would later qualify in the 6th spot for the Formula Xtreme Series with a time of 2:21.605 and an average of 103.229 mph at the four mile course in Elkhart Lake, WI.  Davies would finish in the same spot in the Formula Xtreme final, 4.563 seconds behind event winner Aaron Gobert on a Rockwall Honda.

The Brit born and bred rider headed over to the World Supersport Championship Series in late '09 after the end of the AMA Pro Road Racing Series, which he had contested for the Aprilia team in the AMA Pro Daytona SportBike Series Championship.  Contesting three races for the ParkinGO team on their Triumph 675-based mounts, Chaz returned in the 2010 season to end up fourth in the overall standings. while riding the 3-cylinder machines.

Switching to Yamaha's potent YZF-R6 for the 2011 season, the team took possession of Team Yamaha's 2009 World Supersport Championship-winning machines early in the season, and proved that the machines were still up to the task, winning five rounds on the year to date.  Cal Crutchlow had previously taken the machines to the '09 Championship while under the Yamaha factory tent.

Davies season started out rough when crashing out of the season-opening round at Phillip Island in late February, but went on a tear in posting results of 2-1-1 finishes in the next three rounds.  The UK resident then went on to win three of the next five rounds of the season, taking a third place along the way at Brno in early July, and wrapping it up with a hard-earned 6th place finish at last weekend's round in France.

Team ParkinGO Yamaha rider Chaz Davies won the 2011 World Supersport Championship last weekend at the Magny Cours round of the series' season.  Thanks to WorldSBK.com for this short story about Chaz' great championship wrap-up with just one round remaining on the season:

AMA Road Racing: Steve Rapp Wins His 1st AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Series Race at Miller Over Memorial Day Weekend

2007 Daytona 200 winner Steve Rapp sets up his #15 Attack Performance/Kawasaki Motors Corp/NGK/Pirelli-backed ZX-6R for a turn at Road America during a practice session for the AMA Formula Xtreme Series in June of 2008 at part of the AMA Pro Road Racing Suzuki Superbike Doubleheader Weekend at the Elkhart Lake, WI. track.  Rapp would go on to qualify third behind eventual '08 Formula Xtreme Champ Jake Zemke on the Erion/Parts Unlimited Honda and '06-'07 Formula Xtreme Champ Josh Hayes on another Erion Honda.  He went on to finish out the weekend in the fourth spot in a race run under heavy rain conditions behind winner Aaron Gobert on a Rockwall Honda, runner-up Zemke and 3rd place finisher Larry Pegram on his Pegram Racing Ducati.

Having raced in the AMA Pro Road Racing Series now for over a decade-and-a-half, the California resident first showed promise in the AMA Supersport Series in the mid-late '90s, and eventually signed to ride with the powerhouse Vance & Hines Ducati as a team mate to former AMA 250 GP, World 250 GP and World Superbike Champion John Kocinski for the 2000 season.  Rapp may be famous to some fans for his turn one get off at high speed at Road America in June of 2000 in race one of the AMA Superbike Championship Series stop at the Wisconsin track.  In what was caused by contact with another rider as the pack headed into turn one after the start, the bike literally flew through the air flipping across the track, which in turn caused the ultra high-dollar front forks on the machine being torn off of the bike as it acted like a Super Ball bounding down the tarmac and exploding into pieces.  It was one of those crashes that even seasoned fans shook their heads about, thankful that no one was seriously injured!

Rapp signed to ride with the then-fairly new to AMA Pro Road Racing Michael Jordan Motorsports team for the '05-'06 seasons in the AMA Superbike Championship and AMA Superstock Championship.  After hooking up with the Attack Performance Kawasaki team in the 2007 season, Rapp started off the season leading 39 of 68 laps to win the Daytona 200 by Honda event over team mate Ben Attard, and went on to finish the season in the 2nd ranked spot behind Josh Hayes.  He would finish in the 3rd spot for the 2008 AMA Formula Xtreme Championship behind Jake Zemke and runner-up Hayes.

In '09 Steve campaigned a Yamaha YZF-R6 with sponsorship from Bazzaz, ending the season ranked in the 10th spot in the first year of the newly-created AMA Pro Road Racing Daytona SportBike Series, and during the 2010 season he rode a Ducati 848 for the Team Latus Motors Ducati squad in Daytona SportBike where he garnered a handful of podiums and finished out the year ranked in the 4th spot overall.

Rapp Takes First '11 Win in BigM AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200

TOOELE, UT (May 30, 2011) - Drag Specialties' Michael Barnes launched into the lead of Monday's AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 event at Miller Motorsports Park's BigM Weekend, only to be forced back to third a lap later by a hard-charging Steve Rapp (Parts Unlimited) and Chris Fillmore (Bruce Rossmeyer's Daytona Racing), Fillmore pressuring Rapp unmercifully as the field blasted through the start of the eight-lap contest.

Rapp took over the lead with just four laps to go, followed within a second by Fillmore, Barnes, and the reigning class champion, RMR Bruce Rossmeyer's Daytona Racing's Danny Eslick. Eslick, however, had other plans for the running order, quickly getting up the inside of Fillmore and setting his sights on Rapp. A string of riders following behind the lead trio, Fillmore made a close inside pass on Eslick to retake second position. And though Fillmore rebuffed Eslick's first attack, which came almost immediately, he was forced to cede the position several turns later.

With three laps left to go, the dicing between Fillmore and Eslick had allowed Rapp to put a half-second between himself and the other podium contenders---- a comfortable difference if the two Bruce Rossmeyer teammates stayed focused on each other. As Rapp kept his head down and continued to drag footpegs through MMP's flowing turns, he posted the quickest lap the race had seen yet.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Elbows out, Eslick and Fillmore took the white flag almost side-by-side, having left Barnes several seconds behind but simultaneously lost touch with Rapp, the latter rider now unstoppable more than a second ahead. The pair swapped position heading for the back section of the Utah track, Fillmore making a final bid for the second step but ultimately unable to fend off Eslick, who blasted by and made it stick as the pair tore onto the front straight for the final time.

Third-place Fillmore was followed across the line by Barnes, Michael Beck (J&P Cycles), Tyler O'Hara (GP Bike Parts), Chase McFarland (Latus Motors Racing), Kyle Wyman (Bruce Rossmeyer's Daytona Racing), Joe Kopp (Latus Motors Racing), and Michael Corbino (RMR Bruce Rossmeyer's Daytona Racing).

As the series heads for next weekend's Round 4 at Elkhart Lake's Road America, June 3-5, Fillmore leads the overall AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Championship by six points over Rapp, 78 to 71. Wyman sits third with 51 points.

Chaz Davies Nabs 3rd Place in Final 2010 World Supersport Race in Magny Cours

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chaz Davies on the #57 Attack Performance/Leo Vince/NGK/Pirelli-sponsored Kawasaki ZX-6R dives into turn 11 at Road America during practice for the AMA Formula Xtreme Series in June of 2008.
Davies signed on with the ParkinGo BE1 Triumph World Supersport team for the 2010 season and was the 'best of the rest' this season in finishing 4th in the 2010 World Supersport Championship and carding four podiums, including his fine run home to 3rd place today at the final round in Magny Cours, France. The top three finishers in the series all ran Japanese four cylinders built on the 600 inline-based platform, whereas the Triumph is a three cylinder, thusly the 'CC' advantage in the engine size department. Davies will be back with the team for the 2011 season trying to improve on his and the team's great season on the Daytona 675 Speed Triple-based machines. Good job Chaz and congrats!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chaz Davies, who from 2007-2009 was campaigning the AMA Road Racing Series aboard Attack Performance Kawasakis and Celtic Racing Yamahas in the AMA 600 Supersport Series and the AMA Formula Xtreme Series (among others), finished a great run in the World Supersport Championship in his first full year and brought the Triumph ParkinGO BE1 team's Daytona 675-based machine home in 3rd place today at Magny Cours,France to finish out the season ranked fourth in the championship race. The always-hard charger fought through until the end to card his fourth podium of the year in the World Supersport Championship and finish the year ranked 4th in the overall championship, and what could be termed the 'best of the rest.'

With the series main protagonists running the 'more preferred' 600 inline four cylinder platform in the highly competitive series, Team ParkinGO Triumph took on the task of fielding four riders on the British marque with it's mid-size and very popular three cylinder 675CC machines. After having spent time in Europe racing various other series over the years, and being British himself, Chaz filled the bill that the team needed to stay and race up at the front in one of the world's most competitive series, and to be able to regularly bring his equipment home.
Out of 13 rounds on the season, there was only one round he failed to finish-last weekend's round in Imola. Since the third round in Valencia in early April, Chaz was able to stay in the hunt for the season and held the fourth spot firm in the championship standings throughout the rest of the year. Talk about consistency! All the while, the top three in the championship were all inline-4 mounted.

Great job Chaz and we're looking forward to seeing you back on track in the 2011 World Supersport Championship!

Chaz Davies Scores 2nd World Supersport Podium at Kyalami

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On a drying track, Chaz Davies looks for the dry line with a fresh slick mounted on his #57 Attack Performance Kawasaki ZX-6R during the first practice session of the weekend at Road America for the AMA Formula Xtreme class in June of 2008. Chaz switched to the Attack team for the '08 season and ran both the AMA FX and AMA 600 Supersport classes for the team, winning the Daytona 200 and finishing 5th in the FX class and finishing 6th in the 600 SS class for the year. The Brit rider moved to the Aprilia RSV1000R factory team for the Daytona Sportbike class in '09 and placed 9th in the final standings for the year.
Chaz got the opportunity to run several World Supersport races for the ParkinGO Triumph BE-1 team after the '09 AMA season was wrapped up, and signed with them in the off-season to return to the class aboard the team's Triumph Daytona 675 triple. Through yesterday's event in South Africa, Chaz has maintained 4th place in the season's standings to go along with his first podium back at Valencia.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chaz' first foray into the American AMA series was with the Celtic Racing team during the '07 season. He ran both the AMA 600 Supersport series as well as the AMA Formula Xtreme series for the team. The team ran Yamaha YZF-R6's and Chaz finished 13th in the 600SS and 6th in FX class for the season. The #157 bike above is the DOT tire-equipped 600-class machine sitting in Celtic's pit area at Mid Ohio in July of '07. The bike in rear left of photo is the team's FX class-based machine.
Chaz also raced a 250GP bike in MotoGP in several events during the '06 season, with a best of 13th at Jerez while running for an under-funded team. He has also raced the 125 class in the British Championship back in the early part of the '00's.

Great news for fans of Brit Chaz Davies as he took his second podium of the year yesterday at Kyalami during the South African round of the World Supersport series. Placing 3rd to retain and strengthen his 4th place series standings, Davies took the Italian-based ParkInGO Triumph BE-1 team's triple Daytona 675 to within 10 seconds of the top spot after the 23 lap race that runs along with the World Superbike Series calendar.
The 23 year old Brit, who gained a strong fan base in the States while running for Celtic Racing in 2007, Attack Performance in '08 and Aprilia Racing in '09, signed with the ParkInGO team during the off season after running the last three events for the team in '09. Teamed with former U.S. teamster Jason DiSalvo on the Triumph Daytona 675 triple machines, Davies has had the better of results between the two team mates thus far after six rounds down in the series schedule.
They can next be seen at Miller Motorsports Park over Memorial Day weekend on May 28-31 and the weekend schedule can be found at http://www.sbkusa.com/ to keep up with the action.
The team's press release and the official results of the Kyalami race can be found below.

Stu's Shots tips the hat and helmet to Chaz for a great run yesterday and a solid season so far. Keep up the great work and go get 'em! We miss you in the States but are glad to see you going for it on the World scene!
