AMA Pro Flat Track Spotlight on Riders Henry Wiles, Johnny Lewis & Jimmy Wood

Henry Wiles spins it up on the #17 Monster Energy Kawasaki/Jones Bros/Don's Kawasaki/Arai-sponsored KX450F and sets fast time in his return to the track he has owned since the 2004 season during qualifying for the Peoria TT on August 21.  Round 14 of the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series saw the reigning 2-Time Singles Series Champion return to win his 7th National main event in a row, after suffering injuries earlier in the year at the DuQuoin indoor round that would see him have to sit out almost a third of the season.

Adding to his roster of wins this season, Hammerin' Hank also managed to pull off the win at the Salinas Short Track round in late April, before going under the knife in California to have his knee repaired from the damages incurred the previous weekend inside the confines of the Southern Illinois Center on the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds.  Wiles was able to speed up his rehab, and returned to the track less than three months later at the Lake Odessa, MI. round, and was able to wrestle his GCR XR home to a safe 12th place finish.

Skipping the Sacramento round in late July, Wiles was able to card a strong 4th place finish at the Castle Rock TT before heading to the track that he has owned in central Illinois.  When the series next hit the Springfield Short Track over Labor Day weekend, he again did the near-impossible by winning his 5th National main in a row on the rodeo/multipurpose arena track located at the Illinois State Fairgrounds, further adding to his legend as a Grand National Championship Series contender.

Although Henry wasn't able to defend his two Single Series Championships due to missing part of the year, he still finished the season in the top 10 in points, 10th overall.  Not bad for a guy who didn't even make it to six rounds and missed qualifying for another two rounds.

Look for The Hammer to be back strong as ever for the 2012 season and completely healed up.  By the time Daytona rolls around in mid-March, Wiles will be ready to go again!

Former AMA Supermoto Champion Johnny Lewis maneuvers through turn 2 at the Peoria TT during his heat race at round 14 of the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series.  The #10 Scott Powersports/Dubach Racing Developments/Saddlemen/Triple J Racing-sponsored and Honda CRF450R-mounted JL10 would go on to finish 3rd in his heat behind winner Henry Wiles and runner-up Rob Pearson, and would end the day in the 10th spot in the National main event at the oldest track on the AMA Pro Flat Track Series schedule.

Lewis turned even more heads during the 2011 season on the Scott-developed Kawasaki 650R-based Twins Series mount, in carding a 2nd place finish at Hagerstown (for a series' and personal best finish in the Twins class) and for leading several laps at the Springfield Mile II round over Labor Day weekend.  He also brought home two 2nd place finishes on the year at the season-opening rounds in Daytona.

Johnny ended the season ranked as the 7th place rider in the overall standings, even after not
qualifying for three rounds on the year (Salinas ST, Sacramento, Springfield ST.)  After improving from a 10th place finish in the 2010 season, look for JL10 to move up during the 2012 year.

Jimmy Wood puts his #37 A&J/Southland Racing/M.E.H. Corp/Race Tech-sponsored Honda CRF450R through it's paces during qualifying for round 14 of the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series at the Peoria TT on August 21.  Qualifying in the 27th spot for the National main, the West Coast hotshoe was involved in a massive pile-up in turn one of heat 3 that saw him suffer extensive damage to his left wrist, causing him to miss several rounds of the series.

With a new Twins Series program to work with for the 2011 season on his A&J Racing Kawasaki 650R-based mount, Wood was able to still finish the season ranked as the 13th overall rider for the year.  His season-best effort came at the Salinas Short Track early in the season where he finished 2nd behind winner Henry Wiles.

For a man who didn't even have his full effort for the year planned out until late winter, Wood did a remarkable job for the year, and plans to contend the full season for the second year in a row during the upcoming 2012 race season.  We wish him the very best of luck!

AMA Flat Track: Pomona Half-Mile Season-Finale Video From Dirt Illustrated

Round 6 of the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series kicks off the Twins Series part of the schedule for the season at the Springfield Mile with heat one in the rain-delayed program getting ready to roll for the day.  In what would normally have been a top-4 go to the main event race, the top-6 were guaranteed a spot in the National on this sunny Memorial Day weekend afternoon due to the revamping of the program, with AMA Pro Flat Track dropping the semi races in order to get the show in for the day.

In what would end up being the fastest heat of the day, eventual-Saddlemen Rookie of the Year Brad Baker took the #12 Lloyd Brothers Motorsports/TeamHurtByAccident.com/Foremost Insurance/ENI USA-sponsored Ducati 1098 to the win over defending and eventual-repeat AMA Grand National Champion Jake Johnson on the #1 Zanotti Racing/Schaeffer's H-D/Boughner Racing/Arai-sponsored H-D XR750.  Johnson would finish the day in 3rd, while Baker fought a handling problem that saw him fight for a very strong 5th place finish.

The duo finished the season at Pomona 1-2 in the main, with Johnson taking his 4th win of the season and second-in-a-row to end the season, while Baker would hound The Champ as much as he could in the final to come home 2nd, his best finish of the season and his very young Expert career.  Even with the two re-starts, there was no touching Johnson on his day.

Rob 'Bugs' Pearson would bring his #27 American H-D/Matt Reecy/RPM/WKR-sponsored XR home in 3rd in heat one, and would eventually go on to finish 10th in the main.  The Morton, IL. resident took another turn on the USC/Universal City Kawasaki at Pomona and took the 650R-based machine to a 6th place and very promising finish in the season-finale, and ended the season ranked in the 11th overall spot in the championship.

Johnny Lewis' year saw the #10 Scott Powersports/Dubach Racing Development/Triple J Racing/Saddlemen-backed and Kawasaki 650R-mounted rider move up three spots in the championship chase in a year that started with his 4th-place finish in heat one back in May and an eventual 8th place finish in the National main.  The Pennsylvania rider garnered his first AMA Grand National Twins podium at Hagerstown and also led his first laps in a Twins event at the Springfield Mile II round over Labor Day weekend.  JL10 wrapped up his excellent year with a 4th place finish at Pomona that also saw him finish 7th in the overall championship for the year.

Californian Jimmy Wood (behind Lewis) debuted his new #37 Southland Racing/M.E.H. Corp/Race Tech/Hostility Clothing-backed Kawasaki 650R-based Twins machine at Springfield, and although he missed the main still showed promise on the machine with two top-10 results at Hartford and Brainerd.  Wood missed several rounds due to his Peoria crash, but still finished the season ranked in the 13th spot after finishing 14th at the Pomona round.

Luke Gough played double-duty all year in the Twins class, debuting the #62 Digger/Dick Ford/KK Cycle/Eaken Racing-backed Kawasaki 650R at Springfield in late May.  Swapping back and forth between the Ricky Howerton-built and Danny Ingram-tested Kawasaki and the team's XR, Gough finally made the main with the team's new mount at Sacramento (9th) and again at Springfield II (15th.)  But a 4th place finish at the penultimate round at Calistoga was his and the bike's best-ever finish to date.  The former Australian flat track champion finished the season ranked in the 16th spot and swapped-back to the XR at Pomona to finish 13th in the season-finale.

JR Schnabel, Jr. in all likelihood had a year he would probably like to forget (except for his fine 3rd place finish at the Springfield TT after also winning the Dash event.)  But the rider of the #33 Werner-Springsteen Racing/Monster Energy Kawasaki/Cedar Creek Motorsports/Wossner Pistons-sponsored Kawasaki 650R-based mount never seemed to 'get the feel' so-to-speak for the little Twin, and by the Peoria round in late August was out from under the Werner-Springsteen camp and the rest of the season.  Missing the first  Twins race of the season, the long-time contender in the AMA Grand National Championship only scored points at the Lima round afterwards, and ended the season ranked 21st.

Brandon Robinson ended the first Twins event by finishing 5th in heat one, and taking his #44 Action Motorsports/Big Dawg Racing/Arai/Power Bar-sponsored XR home in the 13th spot of the National main at Springfield I.  Only contesting a partial schedule this season, BRob44 ended the season ranked 20th after having an off-year while still recovering from several surgeries early in the year from his Lucas Oil Indy Mile crash in August of '09.

Chad Cose and the #49 Waters Auto Body/Bell Helmets/Arlen Ness Products/D&D Power Sports-sponsored KTM/Suzuki team struggled to get the team's KTM into the field during the Twins events this year, although they did score a 16th place on the Suzuki at Lima.  Gerit Callies used his Pro Singles provisional to put the KTM in the Pomona main, and finished 16th in the season's final outing.  Cose finished the year ranked in the 18th overall position.

And after having his bike burned from the team's transporter fire earlier in the day, Jesse Janisch on the #45 Weirbach Racing/General Engineering/Jerry Wilhelmy/Arai Helmets-sponsored Suzuki failed to make the main at Springfield.  Janisch and the Weirbach team did a remarkable job even getting the bike ready for the heat earlier in the day from when this shot was taken.  Janisch finished the season ranked in the 30th position.

So take another look at the season's final round from the Pomona Half-Mile as we all get ready for the long lay-off until the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship Series season kicks off in mid-March at Daytona.  A big thanks to Dirt Ilustrated.com for some outstanding footage of round 20 at the Pomona round!

AMA Flat Track: Jimmy Wood Recovers from Peoria TT Heat Crash to Take 7th at Brainerd Half-Mile

Round 14 of the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series got off to a rough start for a couple of the competitors in the 3rd heat race right from the start.  With the Peoria TT being the longest running and current event held on the series' schedule, the fight to make the 18-rider main event can sometimes turn into a war zone.  And that's exactly what happened to Jimmy Wood and Brad Baker on the first lap of their heat race in turn one.

With eventual 1st and 2nd place finishers in heat 3, Jake Johnson on the #1 Zanotti Racing/Schaeffer's H-D/Boughner Racing/Motion Pro-sponsored Honda CRF450R and Bryan Smith on his #42 Moroney's Fasthog.com/American H-D/Rockyonline.com/Boughner Racing-backed Honda able to shuffle through without any mishaps, the rest of the field starts to get caught up in what looks like a demo derby.  Jimmy Wood on his #37 A&J/Southland Racing/M.E.H. Corp/Race Tech-sponsored Honda CRF450R has already gone down after running into/over Brad Baker on his #12 Brothers Powersports/MVR/Schenk Racing/Major League Moto-backed Honda while trying to negotiate the tight turn into one after the start.

As JW #37 is doing a face plant and his bike is getting ready to slam down on top of him, Baker is already down after the contact between the two.  Matt Weidman on his #20 SNIP/Shoei/R&D Springs/Silkolene-sponsored Honda has managed to avoid the rag-dolling Wood, missing Baker in the process (you can just see The Bullet's arm through the gap in Matt's machine between the front tire and frame.)  Baker's machine also came down to tag him during the aftermath.  Ion Stear on his #19 Mack Daddy Racing/Performance Cycle & Dyno/Motion Pro/Fight For Dirt Track.com-sponsored Honda manages to slip through unscathed, with Mikey Rush on his #54Z Ride Nasty Clothing/GP Sports/Rod Lake Racing/Hooper Motorsports-sponsored Honda getting it slowed down in time to avoid the fallen riders.

After the dust and parts had settled, Baker was lucky to make the restart and race the semi to make the main event, for a hard-fought (and sore) 12th place finish. Several weeks later, he still had a burn/hematoma spot on his stomach at least half the size of a football.   Jimmy, however, was not so lucky.

Breaking bones in his left hand, Jimmy was forced to not only miss the re-start of the heat, but the main event, and the next three events on the schedule as well.  With pins and rods inserted to bring his hand back into working shape, the California resident was able to return to action in round 18, just a little over a month after the accident.  Don't EVER say that AMA Pro Flat Track racers aren't tough!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jimmy Wood can be seen in his pit area working on his #37 A&J/Southland Racing/M.E.H. Corp/Race Tech/Hostility Clothing-sponsored Kawasaki 650R-based machine during the Lake Odessa Half-Mile at I-96 Speedway in July 2011.  The Redlands, CA. resident is a regular competitor in the west coast flat track series (among them Eddie Mulder's and Gene Romero's flat track series), and was set to go road racing this year until a last minute change brought him onto the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series as a full-time competitor.

Banding together with his cousin, they started building this great looking machine and team back in January.  With a new motor and a C&J frame wrapped around the Ninja 650R-based parallel twin, Wood has had some impressive results this year, but the most impressive without a doubt was bringing it home into the 7th spot at last Saturday's Brainerd Half-Mile, only two days over a month after his Peoria debacle.  And with enough hardware in his hand to set off an airport metal detector, the man has guts and is as tough as nails.

Jimmy currently sits in the 13th overall spot in the point standings with 100 points, and if not for his having to miss out on the four rounds he missed overall (Peoria, both Springfields and Knoxville), would surely be in the top 10.

You can read all about Jimmy's recovery and his surgery on his hand below, and we wish him the best of luck for the two remaining rounds this year, and look forward to seeing him back in the saddle during the 2012 season, too.  Great job JW, you're too tough for me, man!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can read here what Jimmy Wood had to say after his fine 7th place finish at round 18 of the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series event at the Brainerd Half-Mile round held at the North Central Speedway on Saturday, September 24, below.

A BIG thanks to Tyler Porter from Fight For Dirt Track.com for this great interview with Jimmy after he brought his #37 A&J/Southland Racing-sponsored Kawasaki 650R-based machine home into the 7th spot in the 18-rider main in Minnesota last Saturday.  Read on:

Jimmy Wood Interview courtesy of and by Tyler Porter/FightForDirtTrack.com

Jimmy Wood is a man on a mission. After a
crash in Peoria that left him with a seriously
damaged hand, Jimmy rebounded in Brainerd
With a 7th place finish on his Kawasaki 650.

FFDT: Hey Jimmy, nice ride in Brainerd, walk us
through your night.

JW: The night started off with me being terrified,
just hoping I could hang onto my bike without it
trying to kill me. I had the crash at Peoria, had 4
plates and 26 screws put in my hand and I had
surgery right after Peoria so it has been about 4
weeks or something since the surgery. My hand is
super tender, not getting a lot of movement out of
it yet, no strength or anything, so it was been a
struggle. My doctor told me that if I could hang on,
I could ride so it's really strong, it's all bolted
together, I just have to be able to hang on. I cut
one of my Spider Grips open and put it over the
other one so I had a big 'ole grip to hold on to and
I gave it a go. My bike worked really good. I
qualified, I think, 5th, then got 3rd in my heat and
put it into the main event. I feel like the bike was a
lot better than my results showed. I just couldn't
ride it through the middle of the corners very well,
I just couldn't hold onto the handlebars. The bike
was really really good.

FFDT: With the hand injury, was there any kind
of rehab you were doing to try to get it a little
closer to 100% before the race?

JW: Pretty much all I do is try to wiggle my fingers
around. The doctors put me through a little rehab,
but that's really all it was, just trying to move it
around. Just keep everything moving, keep it kind
of mobile. By the end of the day I can pretty much
ball up a fist, but then I wake up in the morning and
it's locked back straight again. Everyday I make
progress through the day and then I wake up in
the morning and it's, "Aw man!" It's like starting
from scratch.

FFDT: How much is the injury going to affect you
in the next two races?

JW: You know, I don't know. I would think with
another week, well, so far with the first 4 weeks,
when I look at it week by week I have made a lot
of progress. Leaps and bounds. With another
week, I should be good to go. I think I might feel
it a little bit, but it'll be a lot better than it was over
the weekend.

FFDT: Talk about your Kawasaki 650. You've
made some big changes to it this year. How close
is it to being right where you want it?

JW: We've made some really big changes.
Actually, some of the biggest changes came from
John at Jet Tuning. They did a motor for me and
it's great. It makes really equal power to the other
bikes and I'm happy with that. That was a big deal
for us and when Jet Tuning got ahold of the thing,
it's got a noticeable advantage on the
straightaways. I'm really happy with that. Brent
Armbruster, Jared Mees' mechanic took me out
testing one day right before Peoria and helped me
out a lot with the geometry. We moved things up
and down changed everything around until I was
really comfortable. We got the front end like I like
it, made it a lot easier to ride. I was excited to get
out there this weekend on it. One of the reasons I
was in such a hurry to come back was because I
was excited to ride the bike after all of the
improvements that we made. It's been one of
those deals where, my cousin and I decided to put
this team together in January, right at the last
second and we're kind of under prepared I guess
you could say. It's been a learning curve all year
long, trying to get to all the race tracks, then trying
to get the bike dialed in and we built this in a
garage and have something that nobody else has I
guess with the C&J Chassis and that whole deal.
It's come a long ways, but we were the only
Kawasaki in the top 10 last night, so we were first
Kawasaki. I feel like we have one of the best bikes
on the track and we keep making improvements.
We'll go into next year maybe with some more
equipment, but a lot more test time for sure.
We'll be prepared to move forward next season.

FFDT: What did you think about the track at
Brainerd?

JW: Everybody had to ride on the same race track.
Even though it was a bit small for a twin, we were
all on them, so I guess it doesn't matter. It was a
good racy race track. I think we put on a good
show for the people who were in the grandstands
and that's really what matters. It might not have
been the most fun for all the riders, but nobody
went out and got hurt and we put on a show for
the fans. In my opinion it was a good venue, one
that we should probably go back to in the future.

FFDT: This summer you've stayed and traveled
with Jared Mees. Was this the first time you
stayed East and how much did it affect your
program?

JW: Years ago I stayed the summer in Jefferson
City Missouri with Dave Burks and Travis Smith
with the Suzuki crew. They let me ride some of
their singles bikes, so I stayed out there for quite
a while. I've gotten used to the whole "back east"
lifestyle thing. I've been mainly road racing the last
couple of years, staying mainly out west for that,
doing that whole deal. This summer living with
Jared has helped out a lot. Being in Michigan like
he is, is just the perfect place. You're pretty close
to all of the nationals and All-Star races. It was
just nice having somebody with me on these road
trips.

FFDT: Do you have any good Jared Mees
stories?

JW: Of course I do! I have 100 of them!

FFDT: Now your finishing out the series in your
home state of California. Are you expecting to do
better since you're going to be right at home before
the races?

JW: yeah, I actually left early so I can get home,
get bikes prepared and stuff like that. We'll do the
last two nationals and then Eddie Mulder's big race
at Willow Springs also. But being at home, we're
going to have a lot more time to test with the bike.

FFDT: Best of luck and congratulations on your
top 10 at Brainerd!

JW: Thanks man, I appreciate it!

AMA Flat Track: Kaw Tales & Noise Makers From the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship Series Season

Jay Springsteen rolls Shaun Russell's #28 Monster Energy/Werner Springsteen Racing/Wossner Pistons/MotionPro-sponsored Kawasaki 650R-based machine through the pit area on the way to the 'waiting area' just off the track before the heat races at the Springfield Mile on May 29.  Following close behind the 3-Time AMA Grand National Champion is team head Bill Werner, himself a 13-Time AMA Grand National Championship winning tuner, bringing the starter for the team's machine to crank it up.

Neither of the team's riders qualifed for the main event at round 6 over the Memorial Day Weekend, with both JR Schnabel #33 and new-signee (just before the race weekend) Shaun Russell #28 failing to qualify for the National out of their heat race. (In all fairness to everyone, heats-only qualified for the main during the spring event, as the semis were scrapped due to the abbreviated program after taking several hours out of the day getting the track ready after the previous day's rain deluge.  The extra time on the bikes in another 8 lap session alone could have made for more time to sort things out!)

The WSMEK team has struggled more then would be expected this year after the breakout year they had in the 2010 season.  With National #42, Bryan Smith twisting the throttle last year, the team scored three podiums and two wins, and finished the season ranked in the 7th spot in the Twins Series and 8th overall.  With the numbers they put up over the season, the team helped Kawasaki win the Manufacturer of the Year Award from AMA Flat Track, and during the off-season signed new rider Schnabel, a long-time veteran of the series, to run as a team mate to Smith, to further help on development of the machine.

Unfortunately, after the season openers in Daytona, Flyin Bryan announced he was going it alone with his Moroney's Fasthog.com XR team, and Schnabel was left to help develop a new (to him) ride alone.  Then, just before Springfield, the team signed another long-time veteran of the Series, Russell, as a team mate to JR.  At this point of the season, the only results the team has to show in the Twins Series is Russell's 10th place at Hagerstown last weekend, and JR's 13th at Lima at the end of June, after four Twins rounds down on the year.  Definitely not what anyone would have expected after setting the bar in the 2010 edition of the series.

All can't be doom and gloom for the team and it's fans, however, if for no other reason the vast experience pool that each member brings to the team as a whole.  Just Bill and Jay alone have more experience in their lives in flat track then a handful of others, and Schnabel and Shaun combined have over a quarter of a century of experience (as Experts, let alone coming up through the ranks ) to bring to the track.  And getting used to what for both of the riders is a new machine, in terms of handling and power characteristics, is a very big step.  Especially in the world of AMA Flat Track Series racing where the tried-and-true H-D XR-750 has been at the forefront for going on it's 5th decade now, except for a few great years when Honda came in and knocked everyone's door down, only to leave and close it behind them.

Never fear, this team WILL get it turned around and heading down the pike in the right direction, mark my words!  And the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series season is just into the half-way point of the year, and everyone on this team has been known to pull some big rabbits out of the hat in their long careers in The Rolling Thunder Show, so all is not lost, by any means.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jimmy Wood on his #37 Southland Racing/M.E.H. Corp/Racetech/Hostility Clothing-sponsored Kawasaki 650R-based machine heads out for practice during more round 6 action from the Illinois State Fairgrounds mile oval.  Wood debuted his new mount at the first Twins Series round, and also suffered from the lack of track time due to not being able to qualify from his heat into the main at Springfield.

Since then, however, he has managed to turn some heads with setting some fast qualifying times, two-9th place main event finishes and an 11th at Hartford, with a 3rd in the Dash at Hartford thrown in.  As a result, he sits 11th in the Twins Series point standings, and coupled with his great Singles Series program, the west coast flat tracker is 9th in the overall standings.

Look for more out of Jimmy as he's been around this scene for some time, focusing mainly on west coast events up until this year, in which he is making a full-on run on the Grand National Championship Series circuit.  His experience and adaptability will help keep him going with solid results.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Johnny Lewis stands ready to mount up, looking over his #10 Scott Powersports/Dubach Racing Developments/Saddlemen/Triple J Racing-sponsored Kawasaki 650R-based mount while team head Mike Scott sits ready to fire up JL10's machine before the heat races at Springfield at the end of May.  Lewis, in only his second full year of competition in the AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series, bagged his first Twins Series podium of his and the team's young, but very promising career and future in AMA Flat Track Series racing last Saturday night at Hagerstown.

Lewis and the Scott Powersports Kawasaki team have been making some big noise this year, after having a good start to their pairing during the 2010 season.  Lima was a little rough on them, as they only managed a 17th in the main (due to a reported bad gearing choice), but Johnny has two-top 3 Dash finishes and a 5th place finish at Hartford to go along with his 8th place at Springfield.  This team is just starting to gel, as well as getting used to the nuances of the machine.  Last Saturday's 2nd place at the Hub City Classic at the Hagerstown Half-Mile was also the first for a Kawasaki on the podium in a half-mile event.  And Kawasaki is starting to take notice of this former AMA Supermoto Champ and the work he has been doing at the AMA Flat Track events on his SPK machine, as noted by the official press release from Team Kawasaki Racing below.

With these guys mixing it up on a regular basis in the 2011 version of the AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series season, it shouldn't be too long before JL10 gets to that next step on the podium.  And bravo for them now, and when they do.  It's going to be fun seeing it happen as the season rolls on!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Team Kawasaki posted this great release this week showcasing the work that Johnny Lewis and the Scott Powersports Kawasaki team has been doing in the 2011 edition of the AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series season.  Noting the effort put forth by Johnny and the team to garner themselves their first Twins Series podium at Hagerstown last weekend, they also take time to note the work put in by Bill Werner and Jay Springsteen in taking the Monster Energy Werner Springsteen Racing Kawasaki to two back-to-back mile wins last year with Bryan Smith #42 in the seat.

AMA Flat Track Salinas TT & Short Track Rounds 4 & 5 Preview & Race Guide for Easter Weekend

The intensity is in the air and can be seen in the riders' eyes as the main event gets ready to roll off in round 3 of the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series inside the confines of the Southern Illinois Center at DuQuoin, IL. on Saturday, April 16.  With the first indoor short track on the series' schedule in over six years getting ready for 'go time' for the 30 lap main, riders take their position and get their last breath before fighting it out on the bullring track that proved to be fast, furious and exciting.
With experience triumphing over youth at DuQuoin, round 3 showed that it's not always the fast and the young that get it done, but that veteran leadership all-to-often plays out when it comes to making it to the end.  The top three finishers on the bullring at DuQuoin had a combined 115 + wins amongst them, as well as over 14 total AMA Flat Track Championships on their resumes.  End results of the event were far from what many had thought and predicted, only to show that at any given time, anything can and likely will happen in the Rolling Thunder Show.
Riders chomping on the bit on the front row of the DuQuoin Indoor Short Track above are #37 Jimmy Wood on his Southland Racing Honda CRF450R, #45 Jesse Janisch on his #45 Weirbach Racing Honda, #49 Chad Cose on his M.E.H. Corp. Honda, followed by #9 Jared Mees on his Montgomeryville Cycle Center Honda, #4 Chris Carr on his DFW Honda, and event winner Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. on his #2 Chaplin Kawasaki KX450F.  Carr followed The King of Cool home in second (.606 seconds shy of the top spot on the box) for his best finish on a short track in over five years, with defending GN Champ Jake Johnson coming home third on his Zanotti Racing Honda 1.625 seconds back from Coolbeth.  Mees and Slammin' Sammy Halbert on his #7 Woody Kyle Yamaha rounded out the top five.  Will Fulford from The Fast and Dirty.com can be seen on the right side of the shot getting final adjustments made to on-board cameras for the event.

Salinas Preview: Rounds 4 and 5 of the AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Flat Track Championship

DAYTONA BEACH, FL (April 21, 2011) - The AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Flat Track Championship is set to invade the West Coast for the first time in 2011 over the Easter weekend, as Salinas, California's Salinas Sports Complex plays host to Rounds 4 and 5 on April 23-24. Saturday will feature a TT Steeplechase, followed by a Short Track on Easter Sunday, all adding up to one can't-miss event.

For the history buffs out there, this isn't the first Grand National to be held in Salinas ... a Half Mile National was staged in the Monterey Country city back in 1968, a race in which none other than former Grand National Champion Mert Lawwill took victory. Amateur and Pro-AM TT racing at the Sports Complex dates back to the early 1960s.

Fast forward to 2011, and the all-new cast of characters that makes up the AMA Pro Racing "Rolling Thunder Show" is getting set to continue the tight, handlebar-banging action that's typified the 2011 season. Three-time Grand National Champion Kenny Coolbeth is fresh off his first Short Track National win (at last weekend's DuQuoin event) and will be looking to notch his first TT win on his Chaplin Kawasaki-backed Kawasaki.

Current points-leader Sammy Halbert (Fredericktown Yamaha/Woody Kyle Racing) backed up his pair of Daytona wins with a come-from-behind fifth-place result at Round 3, but he's looking to expand on his 16-point lead in a big way. Meanwhile, Coolbeth is tied for second in the points chase with defending Grand National Champion Jake Johnson. And though Johnson's a Pennsylvanian, Salinas will be something of a of a hometown event for his crew, as the Zanotti Racing Team is based in California.

Henry Wiles, who's dominated Grand National Singles racing over the last few years, will be trying to straighten out what's been a trying year for the Monster Energy Kawasaki/Don's Kawasaki-backed effort. After getting banged around at last weekend's DuQuoin event---- and coming away with a dismal 19th-place finish---- Wiles is twelfth in points, but that deficit probably won't last long.

Salinas's own Stevie Bonsey will be looking to keep the victories local as he brings his potent Mack Daddy Racing Honda out with a chance to perform in front of friends and family. (Watch for an upcoming "Notes From the Blue Groove" column on Bonsey, who doubles as a quick road racer, and check out Mark Gardiner's DuQuoin-to-Salinas column right here:

South Dakota's Gerit Callies has taken possession of the Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles points standings after his dominant performance in DuQuoin. California's Mikey Avila had been tied with Callies, but his ninth-place finish at Round 3 leaves him 14 points back, in second. Another Californian, Mikey Martin, rests third in the points.
