Fight For Dirt Track.com's Tyler Porter Hanging Up His AMA Pro Flat Track Pro Singles Shoe

One of the long time supporters of AMA Pro Flat Track, Tyler Porter is hanging up his steel shoe after having competed in the AMA Pro Flat Track Pro Singles Series for the last few seasons.

Porter, out of Paducah, KY. and the owner/operator of Fight For Dirt Track.com, was originally going to call it a racing career well before the end of the 2014 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship season. Talking with him at the Springfield Mile II on August 31, TP sited his busy career obligations with Memphis Shades and his busy travel schedule, as well as the several years he has competed in the Pro Singles Series as his reasons for hanging up his steel shoe.

Porter's InSlide Line column, which appears weekly on his Fight For Dirt Track.com site, is one of the 'must read' musings and informational stops for all-things flat track, and provides everyone with not only a great overview of the background and goings on in flat track, but with a generous dose of reality and amusement to keep things light, yet to the point.

In the shot above, Porter can be seen on his #28C Fight For Dirt Track.com/Performance Cycle & Dyno/Mack Daddy Racing-sponsored Kawasaki KX450F during one of the qualifying sessions for the AMA Pro Flat Track Pro Singles Series at the Peoria TT on August 21, 2011.

Always willing to have a good time and create an air of enthusiastic light heartedness to any and all things, Porter is shown with one of his 'special' autograph cards at the Springfield Short Track round during the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship season at the Illinois State Fairgrounds Multipurpose Arena on September 15, 2012, during the fan walk at the final National held at the facility.

TP called getting his chance to ride a Twins mount at the Springfield Mile one of his biggest and greatest dreams, and was finally able to realize that pleasure during round 3 of the 2014 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship on May 25. Porter showed up at the mecca of flat track with a gorgeous XR750 courtesy of fellow racer and close friend, Ben Knight, and was able to qualify for the Pro Twins Series non-points paying event over the Memorial Day holiday weekend late this spring.

Shown on the #28C Mack Daddy Racing/GFY Racing/Fight For Dirt Track.com-backed Harley-Davidson XR750 while running with Dylan Morin on the #26E Kawasaki of Simi Valley/Chris Cabinet Installation/Frank Baker-sponsored Kawasaki EX650 during one of the qualifying sessions of the AMA Pro Flat Track Pro Twins Series on May 25. Porter qualified a respectable 21st out of the 28 riders who took a timed lap, not bad for a guy who hadn't had a chance to compete at the track that is considered the 'Indy 500' of flat track races.

If you ask TP what his favorite track is, it won't take long for his eyes to light up and his smile to get ear-to-ear when he tells you Peoria. Unlike some racers who consider the track intimidating and scary, Porter always enjoyed making the trip to Thunder Valley.

In the shot above, TP can be seen throwing the #28C Mack Daddy Racing/Performance Cycle & Dyno/Fight for Dirt Track.com-sponsored Honda CRF450F through it's paces during one of the qualifying sessions at the Peoria TT during round 9 of the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Pro Singles Championship on August 12.

Even though he may be leaving the track in terms of competition, you can be sure that Tyler will still be a presence in the background at a lot of the Midwest races on the future calendar of the AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship, and will be keeping us all informed on what is happening in the world of The Rolling Thunder Show and it's diverse and deep family of racers, sponsors and teams. So the next time you hit one of the fan walks at an AMA Pro Flat Track National, make sure you stop by and say hi to TP, as I guarantee you'll walk away with a smile and a good laugh courtesy of one of the great supporters of the greatest racing series on two wheels in the world.

And TP, thanks as always for being a great inspiration to us all and for keeping us in stitches each week with your support of this great sport!

You can read all about Tyler's final race below from last weekend's Pomona Half-Mile, where he got a chance to go out with a bang while riding one of the Zanotti Racing Honda rockets at the LA Fairplex facility.

Pomona Race Report: The Final Chapter

It's a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Corona California where I've been staying all week while I visited some dealers. However, if you are in the area where there is a national, you have to hit that up right? That was my thinking a few months ago when I looked at my travel plans and made the first phone call to Dave Zanotti to secure a bike for the Pomona Half Mile.

It's been over 3 years since I showed up in Daytona with George Mack just trying to see where I fit into the pro ranks. It's be a long journey, full of ups and downs, and mostly downs. I've been fortunate to ride some of the coolest bikes, on the best tracks and have met a lot of awesome people along the way, but every cool trip has to come to an end and that is what Pomona was for me.

Thanks to Dave Zanotti and his crew of Wayne Karcich, Steve Polk and Michelle Disalvo, I had one of the fastest bikes that I had ever hopped on. This Honda was a rocket ship! Now, I don't have a lot of experience on Half-Miles, but the good thing is that Pomona isn't a half-mile. It's listed at 5/8ths but a lot of people say it's closer to a 3/4 mile. I also don't have good history with this sand stuff that these Californians call dirt. However, something seemed to click for me.

In the first qualifier, I was just out to feel things out. I haven't been on a dirt tracker since the Springfield Illinois weekend on Labor Day. Something I always do when I roll out on the track for first practice is roll some sort of wheelie. Into 2nd gear I went  with the front wheel in the air, in a way giving things my own sort of so long, but like in the case of how I feel about Peoria, also giving a salute to the die-hards that show up early to watch practice and to the race crew that bust their tails to give us a great show to participate in at each national. It's also what Steve Murray tells me to do. The track was dry, baking all day in the California sun. Even with that, the track was fun. I enjoyed sliding it into the corner, pulling the throttle back and then holding it sideways coming off the corner and grabbing a gear down the back chute. It was funny how I went from not even looking forward to riding this track to having more fun on it than nearly any track I have been on this year, or dare I say, ever.

I was quite off the pace for most of the day, but I was feeling more comfortable. After talking things over with Wayne and my race wrench for the day, Alex Wood, we decided to drop a tooth to keep me off the rev limiter and raise the forks in the clamps about 5/16ths of an inch to help with front end traction mainly into turn one. Alex also told me I needed to actually tuck in on the straights because of the length of them. Because of my size, he figured it might add up to a tenth or so. I was 34th after the first qualifier and only the top 32 make it into the night program. I never thought I'd do much better but in the last round of qualifier I just focused on NOT blowing turn one which I kept doing in the first session over and over.

We only get 4 laps in each session, so it's important to hit your marks every lap. Plus, our times our so close, any tiny mistake can send you packing. On the first two laps I focused on turn one, finding a new shut off and braking zone that I could make work. On lap 3 I felt like I put in a really great lap. On the last lap I just tried to do the same lap I just did, but try to get on the gas sooner. I came into the pits and Alex was standing there with his hands in the air. At my last national, on a track style that wasn't my favorite on a bike I'd never ridden, I had made the qualifying cut. I was going to race into the night program. After looking at times, I knocked a second off of my lap time from the first qualifier to the second which for me, is pretty impressive.

In the heat race, I didn't get the best jump off of the line and coming back around into turn one I blew the corner and the pack just completely got away from me. There I was in last...WAYYY last which made me angry at myself. I wanted to give up. By the half way point I changed my tune. I was riding an awesome motorcycle on an amazing track and this was one of the last times I was going to have the opportunity. I dug down, and I focused on learning something that I could use in the LCQ.

In the LCQ I had the last pick on the line but when that light went green, that Zanotti Honda just jumped off the line and I was grabbing gears and making passes. I went off into turn one about mid pack and I couldn't believe it, I was doing it! I was making things happen! Down the back chute we went and a few people went high and I got under them. I wasn't close to making the top 4 that go to the main, but I was somewhere in the pack, close and fighting for it. I was all excited about things until I followed a rider into turn one and again blew the corner. Turn 1 plagued me all night long! From there a lot of riders got under me, I lost concentration and found myself at the tail end of the field just as the red lights came out.

On the staggered restart I didn't get the jump I had on the first start and the pack was just going everywhere. I went to the fence and was being forced up there so I went low hoping that a lot of people would blow the corner and I could get under them. I never was a true threat but at least picked off the two riders who went down in the crash that caused the red flag. The checkers fell and I packed a decent wheelie down the back straight to close the book and like that, the book was closed on my pro "career". I made a few night shows, never got too close to a main event, but like I said earlier, had a really good time for the most part.

I have to thank everyone who has been behind me from the beginning. Gary from Lightshoe has been keeping me in boots and steel shoes for years. The folks at Silkolene. I have never once been without oil or cleaners from them. Works Connection have been on board from the start and speaking of starts, their Hole-Shot device on my personal bike has powered me to some excellent starts at a lot of race tracks. Not to mention their billet accessories always have my bikes looking great.  DP Brakes and clutches, if you are looking for a dust free, noise free pad with excellent stopping power, those are the guys you need to talk to. I can't say enough about Charlie from CJ Signs. He's made nearly every graphic kit and number plate back ground for any bike I have ever ridden. He is also responsible for the autograph sheets that I ran out of in just one race because they were so awesome. K&N Filters have been behind me from the get go as well as Mike at Boughner Racing Suspension, Tim at Pro Plates and Shannon at JMP Kawasaki in Wood River Illinois. I also have a lot of "new" supporters in the last couple of years like RK Chain, EVS Sports, and Motion Pro who have come on board and taken excellent care of me. The folks at Bell Helmets have kept me safe no matter how many times I took a digger. Their helmets not only look incredible, but their fit, and most importantly their function is second to none. John and Luke from Bell have been incredible and John was even at the race Saturday to check things out.

Beyond that, there are countless individuals who kept me going. Steve Nace, one of the best promoters in the sport was always right behind me every step of the way. From the time I was racing a YZ125 until I hopped on a Harley XR750 in May in Springfield Illinois. George Mack who made sure I always had a bike to race, and an awesome one at that. The only thing he ever did wrong was taking a donut break during a 3 hour ice race! Clayton Shambaugh gets a lot of credit here, putting me on some of the greatest bikes I've ever ridden, and wrenching for me at a LOT of races. We've had a lot of fun traveling together and no one on earth could teach you more about finding gray areas in a rule book than this guy. Jim Terchila from Mid America Speedway, Ben Knight who has always had my back, Steve Murray who got me into this crazy circus, the Peoria crew of "Turbo", the Kent Brothers, Mitts and Watkins for taking care of me when I'm in town. The Gillim Family for being there from my 250 days until now and for JD Beach who is probably not most famous for his Graves Motorsports Yamaha ride or his Red Bull 125 World Championship, but for teaching me how to ride a rip stick. Aaron Ladd went from my biggest adversary at the local tracks to my best friend. Built some of my race engines and got me out of countless jams. He's also the creator of the "Idiot of the Year" award, which, he made just for me after I destroyed a knock off hub with a hammer. Billy Gruwell who taught me the ways of traveling on the cheap and no matter how disappointed you are in your finish, always get your award. All of my readers on Fight For Dirt Track.com and most of all, my biggest fan from day one, the person who has kept me going and got me started, my cousin Dennis. It's been one heck of an amazing ride.

If there's anyone I forgot, I sincerely apologize. They say it takes a village to raise a child, and it has certainly taken nearly the entire sport of dirt track to get me to this point and I am thankful every minute for me. I'm leaving the pro ranks healthy, experienced, and with a lot of stories and memories that will last a life time. I've crashed over the jump at Peoria and I've gotten an XR750 sideways on the Springfield Mile. I've moved the limestone in Lima, left rubber in Daytona, thrown sand in Salinas, and rode the high banks in Michigan. While I never had any real success, it's been an awesome ride and I thank each of you who made it happen.

Indy's Mid-America Speedway Announces Return to Original Management Effective Immediately

Indianapolis' own hidden gem, Mid-America Speedway, located on the southeast side of Indy at the Marion County Fairgrounds, recently went through a short-term management change when track founder and president Jim Terchila decided to step down earlier this year due to family and work commitments. With his travel schedule at work and home life being affected in a major way, Terchila turned over management duties to a local club to run the regular racing activities at the track, which he has operated along with a very stout, loyal and professional team now for some seven years.

Unfortunately, things didn't go according to plan, and effective this last Satuday, June 28, Jim stepped back in and re-took control of complete operations of the track along with his full, original crew of long-standing referees, pit stewards and track announcer, among others. After talking with Jim over the course of the last few weeks, it was obvious things weren't going to work out with the new team running things, and even with the support of his wife never ending, gave in the ghost and decided to take back control of operations, after fulfilling his initial obligations to those that had tried to take over operations--something he had originally hoped would be seamless, but which turned into more of a cluster than what the man who IS Mid-America Speedway could sit by and let happen.

Below is the press release we prepared for Jim (Mr. Mid-America Speedway himself) after we talked late Saturday about his coming back to helm the ship, and he and his lovely wife Holly are looking forward to bringing everyone the same level of professional racing activities that they and their crew have been synonymous with for all of their years of operation at the Marion County Fairgrounds.

We want to take the time to welcome Jim and his crew back, as I am sure many of you as well as the regular attendees and racers will be in seeing that things will be back to normal at the next race on the schedule on Saturday, July 12 at Mid-America Speedway in Indy, the little track that could!

Indy's Mid-America Speedway Announces Operations to Return to Original Track Management Effective Immediately

Indianapolis, IN., June 29, 2014 – Mid-America Speedway in Indianapolis, one of the finest racing facilities in the Midwest, announced yesterday that track operations would return to the original management team effective immediately. Track founder and president, Jim Terchila made the announcement on Saturday afternoon, June 28.

After founding the facility some seven years ago, Terchila had turned over operations to another local club in lieu of job and family obligations that were taking their toll in being able to maintain the track's operations at the level with which he had originally started the outing over half a decade ago.

“Unfortunately, due to some difficulties with the three races with which they had been in charge here at the Marion County Fairgrounds, it just didn't work out,” stated Terchila. “As of today and for the rest of the season, our original management team will be back in charge of race operations, which will commence with our next race on Saturday, July 12.

“We are obviously looking ahead to the rest of the season, especially with the fast-approaching premier event on our schedule, The Night After the Indy Mile race, which this year will be held on Saturday, August 9,” continued the president of track operations, “and this year's event will again see the two premier classes in the Open Pro and Bultaco Astro Cup events. Jared Mees will again return to defend his unbeaten record here at Mid-America and Dave 'Bones' Aldana, last year's winner Steve Morehead and a host of other former AMA Grand National Championship greats will also be on hand again for some of the racing we have lined up.

"All of our previous personnel will also be returning to action, our pit steward and referee, as well as long time announcer Bret Cheek, who is known for his intense level of excitement and fiery enthusiasm which bestows the overall sentiments which we have tried to bring to the table in all of our years of operating here at the fairgrounds.” Terchila also wanted everyone to know that his lovely wife, Holly, whom everyone has known to become the welcoming hostess in the sign-up area, will also be returning to greet all of the riders and team members as they arrive for each outing.

You can expect the same level of great racing that has been seen for years at Mid-America Speedway going forward, and you can keep up with their full compliment of events by visiting their website at www.midamspeedway.com.  Mid-America would also like to take the time to thank all of the racers, teams, personnel, sponsors and fans who have been a part of the track's success over the years and for making it the great facility that it has become during all of the years it has been in operation.

Mid-America Speedway's 2013 'Night Before the Indy Mile' Again Sees Jared Mees Top the Field in Open Class Win Over Pearson & Bonsey

Mid-America Speedway's 2013 'Night Before the Indy Mile' Open Class
Sees Jared Mees Again take the Win for Unblemished Record at Marion County Fairgrounds Facility

Indianapolis, IN. – Friday, August 16, 2013 – Jared Mees brought his #1 Montgomeryville Cycle Center Honda 450 framer along again for Mid-America Speedway's annual 'Night Before the Indy Mile' Open class round and stormed the field to take the win and keep his perfect record intact at the Marion County Fairgrounds-hosted event. Rob Pearson got the hole shot for the Open main, but Mees made it around 'Bugs' to take the lead and romp to the win again.

Along with a big handful of AMA Pro Flat Track regulars including Brad Baker, Mick Kirkness, Steve Bonsey, Mikey Martin, Mikey Rush and a host of others, the Open class event proved to be a popular event by many of the riders in town for the next day's running of round 8 of the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles Grand National Championship.

A total of over 130 riders were entered for the night's program at Mid-America, sponsored by Harley-Davidson of Bloomington, included the Open class, and AMA Racing's round 10 of the 2013 Vintage National Championship. The evening's racing also included the Bultaco Astro Cup event which saw some of the past stars of days gone by in AMA Pro Flat Track including Steve Morehead, Garth Brow, Jay Springsteen, Joe Kopp and Dave Aldana, to name just a few, take part in the evening's action. (Keep an eye out for our report soon on that part of the program, as it was a super evening just in itself watching past and some current stars of AMA Pro Flat Track doing battle on the historic two-stroke machines.)

Mees, aboard his #1 Montgomeryville Cycle Center Honda 450 framer, won his heat and took the main win over Morton, IL.-resident Rob 'Bugs' Pearson on his #27 Matt Reecy Racing Yamaha YZ450F and Zanotti Racing's Steve Bonsey on the #80 Honda CRF450R in the Open class. Some of the riders opted for their framer mounts while others, like Pearson and Bonsey, rode their current DTX-based Singles Series racers.

Pearson, who considers Mid-America his home track (after the Peoria TT track, of course) can be seen talking with AMA Pro Flat Track part-timer and Australian Mick Kirkness #87 on his Honda DTX-based mount, and Fight for Dirt Track.com's Tyler Porter #28C just before one of the Open Pro heat races. Porter, who also considers Mid-Am his home circuit, made the trip from his home in Paducah, KY., and took the win in one of the heat races for what was his first-ever win at Mid-Am in the 'Night Before the Indy Mile' event, aboard his FFDT-sponsored Kawasaki KX450F. Kirkness took home 4th-place in the Open Class main and TP ended up 12th.

When TP isn't doing his great job of promoting flat track on his website he travels the country as one of Memphis Shades' best salesmen. Just over a week before he had attended the Sturgis Rally in South Dakota to show off Memphis Shades fine line of fairings and windshields.

Riders line up on the front row for the Open class final at Mid-America. (L-R) Tyler Porter #28C, Steve Bonsey #80, Brad Baker #12, Rob Pearson #27, Henry Wiles #17 and Jared Mees #1.

JD Beach had an off weekend from his regular full-time job of piloting the AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike Series RoadRace Factory Yamaha 600, and showed up from his home in Philpot, KY. with a pair of his #95 TJ Burnett Farms/Red Bull-sponsored Hondas CRF450Rs.

JD Beach #95 and Henry Wiles on the #17 Don's Kawasaki-sponsored Honda battle during the Open class main event. Wiles was hot off his 9th-straight victory just five days earlier at the Peoria TT. Beach ended the night in the 6th-place spot in the main with Wiles just behind in 7th-place.

There's calm before the storm in the Zanotti Racing pits as team owner Dave Zanotti, rider Steve Bonsey and team co-hort Wayne Karcich talk shop before the action hits the track at Mid-America. Team owner Zanotti was attending his first event at Mid-America. “After Jake (Johnson) left the team and we brought Steve on board, we decided to run this event,” stated team owner and patriarch of the 3-Time AMA Grand National Championship-winning team. “Jake didn't care much to run the smaller races, just liking to concentrate on the Grand National events, but I've always liked to run some of these, as does Steve. This is a great little facility and we're having a blast. We'll be back for sure!”

Mees #1 and Baker on his #12 Sefnco Communications Honda run together during one of the practice sessions leading up to the evening's main event in the Open Pro class. Baker won his heat and finished the main in the 5th-place spot. Baker currently leads the overall points standings in the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles Grand National Championship, and was making his second appearance of the year and his career at Mid-America Speedway.

Riders roar off the starting line for the evening's Speedway class at Mid-America, one of the undercard events for the track's annual 'Night Before the Indy Mile' race. Brandon Fesselmeyer took the win over Chris Thomas and Daniel Weicht.

Local up and coming racer Kasey Sciscoe #66A leads Jared Lowe #23 to the heat race win in the 80-200cc Youth class at Mid-America and came home in the 4th-place spot in the 80-200cc main. One of the regulars at Mid-America, at 12 years old the local youngster is really starting to show his talent and has stepped-up his game even more then from last season. The young rider put on a great show at Indy that made the crowd roar it's approval and made his Dad, Mike proud for his young son. Mike was busy taking care of the track's concessions throughout the evening and had his hands full with race and food-grilling duties throughout the evening, and was one of the busiest people at the track that night.

And to cap off the great night of racing at Mid-America, John Skinner took his #66 Triumph to the win in the Vintage 750 Hotshoe class, round 10 of the 2013 AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series. Skinner's Triumph is a piece of beauty and looks more suited for a museum piece it is so clean, or even to admire sitting over the fire place mantle. Simply gorgeous!

With a great crowd on hand to take in the action at Mid-America, the evening was a big success for track president and operations manager Jim Terchila and team, who for the first time in memory wasn't aboard his Jawa speedway bike as he was so busy compiling stats and helping out in the tower. The Indianapolis resident again pulled off a great night of racing at the Marion County Fairgrounds facility, located on Indianapolis' southeast side.

The track looks to continue it's success with the event again next year, which has proved extremely popular with the riders and teams already in town for the legendary Indy Mile event, held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds the next day. So if you missed this year's event, this is surely one to add to your bucket list for next season.

Mid-America Speedway in Indy Announces 'Night Before the Indy Mile' for August 17, 2012

One of the hidden jewels in flat tracks in the Midwest is Mid-America Speedway on Indianapolis' south east side, located at the Marion County Fairgrounds.  Having hosted flat track and speedway racing since the 2007 season, the track has started to grow a big following amongst fans and riders alike over the course of the last few seasons.

Run by fellow flat track fanatic Jim Terchila, the track hosts 8-10 events a year ranging from the youngsters all the way to the Pros in a variety of classes and displacements on the immaculately prepared short track.  During regional and local races on the track's schedules, rider turn-outs of 140-150 with 27-30 races is commonplace.

The racing lines around Mid-America are abundant, too, as evidenced in the shot above taken during the June 23, 2012 event.  Ben Knight #85P leads Jake Tolbert #90J, Brett Terchila #9 (the track president's younger brother), and Ricky Leak #96J.  All are area and/or local riders that regularly contest the events held at the Marion County Fairgrounds track.  Track president Jim Terchila himself regularly runs the speedway class himself and is quite the hot shoe on his brakeless 500cc methanol-burning machine.

Last year on the Friday night of the Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP Weekend the track held it's first 'Night Before the Indy Mile' event that was one of the facility's best-attended rounds of the season, and hosted AMA Pro Flat Track riders such as Jared Mees (who won last year's Pro 450 main and is expected back again this year), Henry Wiles, Ion Stear and Rob Pearson, among a big list of other notable Pros.

Next Friday, August 17 will be the track's official 'Night Before the Indy Mile' after last season's Lucas Oil Indy Mile was canceled due to the tragic events surrounding the rigging collapse on stage during the Sugarland concert held just two weeks before the event had originally been scheduled.  Mid-America will again be running a limited program for the evening, and the list of regulars/locals and Pro riders is growing fast.  And the track again will also host the 1949 Indian Arrow 250cc Challenge that drew a nostalgic following for the vintage event's first run.

This will be an event that is a must see for any flat track fan and/or any racing fan in Indy over the big weekend of racing in the Hoosier Capital.  Check out the full press release below and get ready to head east after the first day of practice wraps at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to check out some of the best of the best on the great little short track at Mid-America Speedway.  You won't be disappointed!

Mid-America Speedway in Indianapolis Brings You the '2012 Night Before the Indy Mile' presented by Harley-Davidson of Bloomington, IN. on MotoGP Weekend Friday, August 17

Mid-America Speedway, Indianapolis, IN.--August 10, 2012—In just one week, one of the biggest weekends of a motorcycle racing fan's dream will all come together in the Indiana capital as the Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP will reign supreme for it's 5th Annual gathering at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

There are many events that help to highlight the great weekend of racing in Indy, but one of the most exciting will be happening on Friday, August 17 as Mid-America Speedway , located at the Marion County Fairgrounds, will be hosting their inaugural 'Night Before the Indy Mile' on the beautifully prepared short track venue located on Indianapolis' south east side of town.

Hosting flat track racing at it's facility since the 2007 season, the local venue will host the stars of AMA Pro Flat Track and some of the riders on the regional and local circuit for what is sure to be a great kick-off to the following night's Lucas Oil Indy Mile held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. For the second year in-a-row, Mid-America will again play host to some of the best racing on wheels in the world as some of the stars of The Rolling Thunder Show in AMA Pro Flat Track will roll into town the night before to contest the Pro 450 Class.

Riders such as current AMA Grand National Championship points leader Jared Mees #9, Illinois resident and Mid-America regular Rob Pearson #27, Canadian flat tracker Doug Lawrence #73, full-time AMA Road Racer/part-time AMA Flat Tracker JD Beach #95, and Pro Singles riders Zakk Palmer #81C, Ben Knight #85P and Fight for Dirt Track.com's Tyler Porter #28C. Last year's event in the Pro 450 Class saw Mees, Australian Mick Kirkness and Rob Pearson fill-out the podium.

As most remember from the 2011 season, the originally-scheduled round of the Lucas Oil Indy Mile was canceled due to the tragic results of the rigging collapse on the main stage just over two weeks before the event was to run. Mid-America Speedway hosted it's original outing on Friday night of the '11 MotoGP Weekend and saw a great turn-out of Pro and local talent in spite of the cancellation at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, and is expecting an even better turn-out of talent for this year's event on Friday, August 17.

Ingram will be on-hand to sign autographs for the fans and will be selling t-shirts to help support his Expert Twins Series program. All riders will be available throughout the evening to sign autographs and talk with the fans.

Mid-America Speedway Season-Opening Round, May 5 Review

Mid-America Speedway at the Marion County Fairgrounds on Indianapolis' southeast side, celebrated their season-opener on Saturday, May 5, proving the old fable that 'the third time is the charm' along the way.  After suffering rain-outs on April 14 and 28, Mother Nature cooperated and a reported field of over 100 riders showed up to do battle at the great little facility, with a wealth of class-offerings for young and 'older' alike.  The evening featured 27 classes, running 6-lap heat & semi races and 8-lap main events.

Unfortunately, Indy received no rain in between the middle of the week when the great crew at Mid-Am had prepped the track, so the early practice sessions proved to be a little dusty, as evidenced in the shot above.  But the crew went to work with minimal delays, and by the time the heats and semis rolled off at 7:00 PM local time, things were looking pretty good.  Track operator and head-man-in-charge Jim Terchila and his crew did a fine job of hosting a great event for their season-opening round, and their second event is scheduled for Saturday, June 9, which they are billing as their official 'Opening Night 2012.'

In the shot above, Brian A. Rowlett #29, Andrew M. Butler #34F and Ken L. Maynard #13J are shown during one of the early practice sessions at Mid-America Speedway on May 5 for the 450cc Motorcycle Class.

Cody Criswell #72, Drew Hart #41F, Landon Alberts #15, Steven Selby #91 and Trent T. Lowe #48 take to turn one at Mid-America for the first practice session of the season in the 80-200 2/4 Stroke ages 9-15 Class.  The younger racers put on a super show and gave the sparse crowd on-hand an idea of what the future of flat track racing has to offer.

Former local racer and former AMA Grand National competitor Tom Terry gets some practice laps in on his nephew's #67 Honda CRF450R during the first session for the 250+ Mod Amateur Class.  Tom's been away from racing for awhile, but showed everyone he still has it for a 55 years young man!

For those who remember those days, The Indianapolis Speedrome (Kitley Raceway to all you old heads like me!) used to host motorcycle races back in the late '70s/early '80s, and Tom was a multi-time champion at the local track.  Tom also used to run the indoor flat track races that they used to hold at the now non-existent Market Square Arena at Indy back in the mid '70s.

Mid-America Speedway President Jim Terchila (red shirt, right background) conducts the first riders meeting of the 2012 season.

The Speedway Class bikes take to the track, with three of the four machines and riders entered for the evening having at it.  Pictured are Mike Hammond on his #110 Jawa, Dan Frasson on his #18 GM, and Paul E. Huggins on his #5 Jawa.  I was loving the smell of methanol in the air!

Chris Avra #19, Gary Terry #67 and the #490 of Clayton Criswell get racy during practice on Saturday at Mid-America.

Mike Farmer's #1 Honda was sitting in the pit area and I couldn't keep my eyes off of this ultra-clean looking machine, which bore a paint job all too similar to Bubba Shobert's late '80s Team Honda/HRC RS600s and RS750s that blazed a trail in the AMA Grand National Championship series in the mid-late '80s.

Mid-America's program has something to offer for all ages, as evidenced by this great battle between Jared Lowe #48 and eventual class winner Layne Walters #85 in the 50cc Class for the way future champions of AMA Flat Track.  Most of the kids in this class were between the ages of 5-9 according to Mike Sciscoe, one of the people in the know at the track that helped me to keep me abreast of what class was what for the better part of the evening.

Mike's son, Kasey R. Sciscoe on the #160 Suzuki, is out front of Trent T. Lowe #48 and the #66F of Cody Chisham during practice.  Kasey is 11 and has been racing since he was 5 according to his Dad, and has competed in the amateur national qualifiers and will be participating in his first Amateur Grands this season.  They've got this bike sold to a European rider for the upcoming Springfield Amateur Grands at the end of May.  Kasey won his semi race to qualify for the main in the 85cc 7-15 Class where he eventually came home with a solid 3rd-place finish.

A couple of AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com Series regulars made the trip to Mid-America from their respective homes.  Tyler Porter #28C (www.fightfordirttrack.com) showed up with his '07 Kawasaki KX450F and won his semi along the way to help him get ready for the AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles event at the Springfield TT on May 26.  TP made the 300+ mile trip from his home in Paducah, KY. to run the season-opening race held at the Marion County Fairgrounds in Indy.

Illinois resident and AMA Grand National #85P Ben Knight also had his Kawasaki on-hand and won the Veteran 30-49 Class main event.  Tom Terry can be seen on his nephew Gary's #67 Honda, with Gary standing just to his left, as they all get ready for the first practice round of the day on Saturday afternoon.

Also seen in this shot are  Lonnie Vanderpool #90, Andrew Butler #34F, Kasey R. Sciscoe #61 and Cody Criswell #72.

A few of the bikes on display at Mid-America include the #17 Honda of Justin Stewart, the #5 Speedway Jawa of Paul E. Huggins, Cory Phillips #18 Honda, Landon Alberts #15 Honda and the #91 Honda of Steven Selby.

Former AMA Grand National competitor and Indianapolis resident Kyle Long on his stealth-looking Yamaha #32 leads current AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles competitor Tyler Porter #28C in their battle in the 450cc Motorcycle Class.

A special thanks and tip of the helmet go to Jim Terchila and his wife for their efforts in putting this great flat track event together, and for inviting me out to check in on the action!  Thanks so much and I'm looking forward to the second event of the season scheduled for Saturday, June 9.

AMA Pro Flat Track Announces Saddlemen Rookie of the Year Candidates

Round 14 of the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season at the Peoria TT saw first-year Pro Singles rider Briar Bauman take the checkered flag and the podium ceremonies after appearing to win the 12-lap main on his #10Z Rod Lake Racing/Brown's Cycles/Lazer Racing/Gene & Gail Cummings-sponsored Honda CRF450R.  In only his third race in the series, the Salinas, CA. resident had won his first-ever Pro main event at an AMA Pro Flat Track race.

Unfortunately, due to what was termed a 'fuel' violation after race-ending testing, he was disqualified for his win and Mikey Avila on his #33E SDI Insulation/MEH Corp/Boughner Racing/Arai-backed Honda was awarded the win.  At the end of the season, Avila had finished 2nd in the overall point standings in the AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship behind series champ Mikey Martin, but Bauman would finish 6th after only campaigning eight of the series' 20 races for the season.

It should be noted that Bauman's DSQ was in no way ever termed a situation where he was trying to get an advantage on the rest of the field, it was simply a case of the fuel not testing to 'spec' for the after-race testing, and in all probability it was most likely a case of some leftover fuel having gotten mixed in with the Sunoco spec fuel for the event.

For the 2012 season Bauman, Martin and Avila are now campaigning the Expert division in the series, and are now in the running for the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Saddlemen Rookie of the Year Award, each hoping to join former ROY winners Brad Baker, PJ Jacobsen, Matt Weidman, Jake Johnson and Jared Mees, just to name a few, as the season-ending top finisher in the freshman class of Expert GNC racing.

In the shot above, Bauman hands his #10Z Honda off to one of his crewmen just after the Pro Singles final, with Avila's #33E Honda setting against the fence in the background.  Also on-hand to take in the Pro Singles ceremonies is Tyler Porter from Fight For Dirt Track.com, who was doing some shooting and videotaping of his own at the August 21 event.

AMA Pro Flat Track and AMA Pro Racing's Director of Sales, Mike Kidd (former '81 AMA Grand National Champion) issued a new-style press release concerning the new class in the Expert division, and you can check it out below.  Be sure to check out all of the sponsors of the series and get signed up for updates, and while you are there get your ticket order in early for rounds 3 & 4 of the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season at the Springfield TT (May 26) and Springfield Mile I (May 27).

Again in 2012 the Harley-Davidson Insurance Year End Points Fund for the AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Experts is the biggest award with a total of $100,000 to be split between the top 12 in the final GNC Combined point standings.
On paper starting the 2012 season the Saddlemen "Rookie of the Year" award looks to hold another competitive class of youngsters. 16 year old Briar Bauman (USC Kawasaki / Ronnie Brown) leads a couple of 18 year old riders, Mikey Avila (SDI Insulation / Joe Bisha) and Mikey Martin (Bonneville Performance Triumph / Acerbis), after a great debut, posting eighth and sixth place finishes. Avila also qualified both nights and finished 17th and 19th. Martin missed both nights with his best finish just one out in his semi on Friday. Bauman is tied for seventh in the point standings 22 ahead of Avila. Saddlemen has once again posted a $5,000 year end award to the eligible rider who scores the most points in the Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship.
Bauman finished the 2011 AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship in 6th place. Bauman won three of the eight races he competed in and finished within the top-five positions seven of the eight races.
Bauman added, "I ask a lot of myself, but I really want a top-ten overall finish in the class and the Saddlemen Rookie of the Year Award. I can't tell what's going to happen on the twins, but top-ten overall and Rookie of the Year."
