2013 AMA Indoor Dirt Track National Championship Series in DuQuoin Sees Tight Racing & Talented Fields

JD Beach on the #95 USC Racing/Red Bull/Barnett Farms/Bell Helmets-sponsored Kawasaki KX450F lays down a lap during one of the practice sessions at the Springfield Short Track on September 15 at round 12 of the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season.

The part-time flat tracker had a weekend off from his duties in the AMA Pro Daytona SportBike Series and put it to good use in running the final National for the foreseeable future at the Multipurpose Arena on the Illinois State Fairgrounds.  Beach had a strong showing on the day after qualifying 7th out of the 48 riders on-hand to take a qualifying lap, and pulled off a solid 6th-place finish in the National main and backed that up with a 4th-place finish the next afternoon on the Springfield Mile.

Beach, who makes Philpot, Kentucky his home now, has again been contesting the AMA Indoor Series at the Southern Illinois Center in DuQuoin and is once again making it his personal stomping ground.  Of the three rounds and ten races he has contested thus far in the season, Beach has taken a whopping nine wins.

The series has been seeing a great turnout in terms of amateur and pro talent, and the confines of the Southern Illinois Center's layout and the great promotional and operations work done by the Steve Nace Racing crew has again made for some exceptional racing during the winter break.  Some of the other pros that have been contesting the indoor races so far include among others Jeffrey Carver, Jr. #23, Chad Cose #49 and Brandon Robinson #44.

There are several rounds yet to go with this weekend, December 8 & 9 hosting the next set of events.  You can check out more below from the official press release from the AMA and also see the promotional flyer for the year-end rounds that are scheduled for December 29 & 30.

AMA Indoor Dirt Track National Championship Series brings tight racing, big names to Du Quoin, Ill.

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- December 5, 2012 -- The AMA Indoor Dirt Track National Championship Series is running full throttle at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Du Quoin, Ill., with tight racing and an impressive lineup of Pro and Pro-Am riders highlighting the on-track action in the Steve Nace Racing-promoted series.

"We're having a great series with competitive racing across the board, in both motorcycle and ATV competition.  These riders don't slow down when the outside temperatures drop," said promoter Steve Nace.   "There's a lot of exciting short-track and TT racing on the schedule through late February -- not to mention an indoor, heated facility to keep the fans nice and warm -- so come on out and catch some racing."

One of the tighter championship races is in the 250cc Modified class, where just 1 point separates class leader Kolby Carlile from Canandaigua, N.Y., and Jeffery Lowery from St. Louisville, Ohio. Carlile, who has performed better in the short-track events, has three wins to Lowery's two.

Lowery, however, leads the points in the 251-500cc DTX class and 450 Mod class, where Carlile is fourth in the points.

The Vet riders are also heating up the track. Shawn Granderson from Chandler, Ind., leads the Vet 30+ class and the Senior 40+ class, where Tim Trowbridge from Eau Claire, Mich., sits second in points. James Dean Faulkner from Simpson, Ill., with one short-track win, is keeping Granderson honest in the Vet 30+ class, while Trowbridge currently leads the points chase in the 50+ class.

The fastest racing on the track is the Open Pro-Am competition, which has included current dirt-track and roadracing stars, including JD Beach from Philpot, Ky.; Hayden Gillim from Philpot, Ky.; Chad Cose from Freemont, Calif.; JR Addison from Bucyrus, Ohio; and Jeffrey Carver from Alton, Ill. Addison and Carver are past winners of the AMA Dirt Track Horizon Award, presented to the amateur dirt-track racer poised for success in the pro ranks. Gillim has won the AMA Roadrace Horizon Award.

All racing takes place at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds' Southern Illinois Center in Du Quoin, Ill. Gates open at 2 p.m., with practice beginning at 5 p.m. A pit pass is $15, while children 5 years old and younger get in free. Friday night practice is available from 6-9 p.m. for $25.

Remaining rounds are Dec. 8, Dec. 29, Dec. 30, Jan. 12, Feb. 9 and Feb. 23. The Dec. 29 round is short-track competition only. The other rounds feature both short-track and TT racing.

Corp/Arlen Ness/Bell Helmets-backed Honda CRF450R into the second starting spot.  In next comes Jimmy Wood on his #37 Southland Racing/M.E.H. Press release from Chad Cose Racing, April 2, 2012:

Hello Everyone,

This weekend I got the chance to stay pretty close to home as we had a local race in San Jose, California.  Every year San Jose Fairgrounds plays host to an indoor concrete short track to pay tribute to the legends of our sport and give some of us pros a chance to bang each other around for a decent amount of money.

This year Rod Lake didn't promote the race and put up the big purse we were accustomed to seeing over the last few years, however P&D Promotions kept the event going and offered a purse for the pro riders. There was about 6 or 7 National number guys on-hand and a flock of local guys ready to race what some call "a fist fight in a phone booth."  I didn't bring my National bike to the race, so we threw some flat track suspension on my '05 motocross bike and gave it a go.

After our one-lap qualifying session was said and done I ended up 7th overall.  This would line me up second over from pole in my heat race.  I got off the line 2nd and hounded fast qualifier Kayl Kolkman for the quick 7-lap heat race, falling about half a wheel short for the win at the finish. I ended up second but they only transferred the winner to the small 10-rider main event.

I pulled the holeshot from pole in my semi and went on to win to punch my ticket to the main.  You had to either win your heat race or semi during the whole program which meant everyone in the main was on their game.  My semi win would line me up second over from pole in the main event.  Our first start was red flagged after about 3 laps due to a couple riders going down.

Once we got the green and were going again I was sitting in 6th. I passed one rider and closed in on Jared Mees for 4th.  It looked as if Jared was having trouble with his bike, but eventually took over 4th and set my sights on 3rd.

I slowly began to reel in Mikey Rush for third and thought I had a shot at him when lapper Briar Bauman and him got together.  It was a little late as he settle back in for about 5 laps left.  The checkers flew and I crossed the line 4th.  It was definitely one of those deals where if you got out front you were in good shape and if you were coming from behind you had your work cut out for you.

All in all we had a decent weekend and a good time. I also got a chance to meet up with a few of the great guys from Bell Helmets who came out to check out the race and support Flat Track.  Most importantly I stayed healthy for Springfield, which at a race like this the crazy accidents usually happen.

I can't thank my sponsors, family, friends and fans enough for everything.  Thanks again to everyone!

Chad Cose 49

Round 5 of the '12 AMA Racing Indoor Dirt Track National Championship Series by Steve Nace Racing Runs February 11 in DuQuoin

Jeffrey Carver, Jr. lays down a lap in qualifying on his #23 Van's Yamaha/Woody Kyle/Yamaha Motor Corp GYTR/Carver's BBQ-sponsored YZ450F at the DuQuoin Indoor Short Track, during round 3 of the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com on April 16.  The '10 AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Champion qualified a respectable 24th out of the 55 riders that laid down a qualifying attempt for the event, of which 48 would make the final cut.

The Alton, IL. resident had a rough go of it the rest of the day when he DNF'd his heat race and finished out of a qualifying spot for the National main in his semi race with a 6th place finish.  Carver recovered finely through the rest of the season and ended his rookie Expert season in the 12th overall spot in the championship standings.

Living just over 100 miles from the Southern Illinois Center at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds, Carver has been taking advantage during the off-season by running Steve Nace Promotions' 2012 AMA Racing Indoor Dirt Track National Championship Series, and should be on-hand this weekend when round 5 kicks off Saturday, February 11 with practice starting at 5 PM CST.  There is also a practice session scheduled for Friday night, February 10 from 6-9 PM CST.  Some of the other riders that have been running the indoor series include JD Beach, Rob Pearson, Dan Ingram and JR Schnabel.

If you are in the area and looking for some big excitement and a rush of adrenaline to get you through until Daytona on March 15-16, head over to this great little facility and see a well-run and tight program as put on by the folks at Steve Nace Racing Promotions.

Steve Nace Racing to Promote 2012 AMA Indoor Dirt Track National Championship Series at DuQuoin-First Round November 12

JD Beach lays down a fast lap on his #95 USC Motorsports/Top 1 Oil/Alpinestars/Arai-sponsored Honda CRF450R during the final qualifying session for round 3 of the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series inside the Southern Illinois Center at DuQuoin, IL. on April 16.  Beach went on to qualify with a time of 11.215 seconds on the indoor short track, .178 seconds behind fast-qualifier Kenny Coolbeth, Jr.

Beach is one of a handful of AMA Pro Flat Track riders who have taken advantage of the off-season schedule of events inside the confines of the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds facility over the last couple of seasons.  With Steve Nace's group heading up the program in Southern Illinois of late, his team has produced some great racing with a tightly-run program.  Sammy Halbert, Chris Carr (who kicked off his 2011 Farewell to Flat Track Tour at DuQuoin back on January 1) and Rob Pearson are a few of the riders who have entered events at DuQuoin to stay in shape during the long winter months.

Steve Nace and Kelly Bell, who head up the SNR group of folks, are a couple of great people who bleed flat track racing.  Working with the AMA Pro Flat Track folks at the Nationals, both of these folks know how to put on a good show for the paying butts in the seat.  They also promoted round 3 of the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship Series at the Southern Illinois Center and did an outstanding job of putting on one fine show.

This is great news that they will be bringing the Indoor Nationals back, with the amateurs-only eligible for the Indoor National Series.  The series will also see some Pro/Expert classes as part of the schedule that may see some of the National-ranked riders participate in, depending on their schedules.  Sammy Halbert had posted on his Sammy Halbert Racing Facebook page that he may attend the January 1, 2012 round to help ring in the New Year!

You can read the official release below and check out the dates...first round kicks off next Saturday, November 12.  If you are in or near the area you owe it to yourself to check out some great action in DuQuoin, and to keep the adrenaline flowing during the off-season!

AMA Flat Track: 7-Time Grand National Champion Chris Carr Calls It a Career at Pomona Season-Finale

For the final time in his career as a legendary rider, 7-Time AMA Grand National Champion Chris Carr walks out towards rider intros at another track that made him famous.  A 12-time winner on the Springfield Mile, The Prince of Peoria came up just-short of his 13th on September 4 in round 16 of the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series.  How short?  Just .012 seconds short, to first-time winner Willie McCoy.  Leading the majority of laps throughout the red flag-delayed 26-lap National main event, Carr was one of the first to greet winner McCoy on the victory podium, giving his former team mate a bear hug for the ages, and commenting that if he had to lose to somebody that he was 'glad it was Willie.'

With his long-time tuner, Kenny Tolbert rolling out his #4 American Motorcyclist Assoc/Classic Harley-Davidson/DFW Honda/Arai-backed H-D XR750, Carr's 50th and final main event at the Illinois State Fairgrounds was just like the almost 400 races the man has run throughout his AMA Flat Track career--fast and exciting, leaving fans and friends alike on the edge of their seats and the tips of their toes as the former champ showed the way at the front and battled side-by-side with his fellow competitors.

The long-time racer announced his Farewell to Flat Track Tour 2011 early in the year, and besides running the 20-race schedule on the AMA Pro Flat Track Series, competed in another 15 events this season to close out what can only be described as a phenomenal run for a 44 year old man.  There wasn't an event on the National schedule where the fans weren't mobbing him in their quest for that final autograph or t-shirt, and from the first, at the Steve Nace AMA Flat Track race in DuQuoin back in January, to the last at last week's season-finale at Pomona, the transplanted Californian wowwed the crowds at each and every event he hit this season.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The MavTV cameras are rolling and AMA Pro Flat Track official announcer Barry Boone is ready to talk with the winner of the 2nd heat race at round 3 of the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series inside the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds' Southern Illinois Center's indoor short track back in April.  And it was Chris Carr who came out fighting after ending combined practice in the 4th spot, but then qualifying 11th.

But when it came time to lay down the law, The Prince of Peoria delivered in winning his heat, and then going on to get 2nd in the Dash for Cash event behind event and Dash winner, Kenny Coolbeth, Jr.  From that point in the season, you knew it was on as he went on to take 2nd in the main behind Coolbeth, with then-and eventual-repeating Grand National Champion Jake Johnson rounding out the podium.  The Farewell to Flat Track Tour 2011 was off to a pretty darn good start for the former 7-Time AMA Grand National Champion.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On the track that made him not only famous, but a true legend in the great sport of AMA Grand National Championship Series racing, Carr hammers the #4 American Motorcyclist Assoc/DFW Honda/Classic Harley-Davidson/Arai-sponsored Honda CRF450R out of the turn 5 area heading towards the start/finish line at the Peoria TT in round 14 of the 2011 season on August 21.  Practicing in the 7th spot overall and qualifying 5th behind Henry Wiles, Jared Mees, Jake Johnson and Brad Baker, Chris finished 4th in his heat, and had a great battle in the National main event to finish the day in the 6th spot.  The Peoria Motorcycle Club honored the 13-time National main event winner at the track with a ceremony including his family that left very few dry eyes on anyone in attendance.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These two men hold records in AMA Grand National Championship Series racing that put them second only behind former 9-Time AMA Grand National Champion Scott Parker.  Chris Carr and Kenny Tolbert have been racing together for 23 years, and have produced together all of Carr's championships, and a majority of his 78 National main event wins in the series.  Looking to the future, the duo are hoping to get the sponsorship together to put a young up-and-coming rider on their equipment for the 2012 season and beyond.

At the Springfield Mile II event when this picture was taken, Carr told Cycle News.com's Larry Lawrence and myself that they 'weren't there yet' in being able to get a full-season program together, but were hopeful to be able to get things worked out to be able to do so.  With the tutelage of this great pair of racers and people, whomever that person may end up being will have a rock-solid program under them when it comes to fruition.  And they'll have a great time hanging with two of the nicest guys in the sport as well.

Carr has some ideas he is hoping to jointly work with the AMA and some other entities in order to help AMA Flat Track grow even more and prosper in the future, and he talks more about that with Cycle World.com's Matthew Miles below.

We salute the now-retired champ for his super year in placing 5th in the overall championship, and are definitely going to miss him on the track.  One of the fiercest competitors to ever throw a leg over a Grand National machine, his presence in the series has left a lot of great memories over the years for alot of fans, sponsors and competitors alike.  Thanks for those memories Chris, they're golden, man!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Read and view on below more about Chris' great final season in competition, and his last race event a the Pomona Half-Mile.

Paul Carruthers was on-hand at last Saturday's season-finale round 20 of the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series at the Pomona Half-Mile, and got a chance to talk with Chris about his season and his great career over the course of the last quarter-plus century.  You can read it hear, and also see the short video clip with Chris as he reflects on calling it a day, in the latest edition of Cycle News.com's Digital issue:

AMA Flat Track: Henry Wiles Talks Return to Peoria & Rehabbing After His Surgery

Henry Wiles looks down at his machine-and probably also checking his knee and leg-at the DuQuoin Indoor Short Track on April 16, while waiting for rider intros for the National main event in the Southern Illinois Center at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds.  Round 3 of the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series saw the defending 2-Time AMA Pro Flat Track Singles Series Champion suffer leg & knee injuries during his heat race, that by the end of the month, had forced him under the knife with reknowned California surgeon Dr. Ting, and into a rest and rehab program that would stretch to almost three months long.

At the dawn of the return to the Peoria TT round of the series schedule, there are many that probably wonder whether Hammerin Hank will be able to return to form on his #17 Monster Energy/Don's Kawasaki/Shift Racing/Jones Bros.-sponsored KX450F and win his 7th event in a row in Peoria, IL.  Wiles first Grand National win, and first at Peoria, came in August 2004 (the 2007 event was rained out) and the man has been all but unstoppable since, not only in Peoria, but in just about any other event hosted by the IMDA folks in the State of Illinois.  But as has been mentioned several times in the last week by myself, and Tyler Porter over at Fight For Dirt Track.com, this IS the same man who came back from having broken both wrists several years ago to again, dominate at the Peoria TT.

You can bet that Henry will be ready to go when practice rolls out of the gate at the Budweiser Grand National TT event at 1030 CT this morning.  In the mean time, check out what The Hammer had to say this week when he talked with the folks at his main sponsor, Monster Energy, about his return to Peoria.  And if I were a betting man, I sure wouldn't bet against Hammerin Hank today!

AMA Flat Track: Steve Nace Racing All Star Series To Hit Wisconsin, Dairyland Classic Returning to Sheboygan County Fairgrounds

Jared Mees runs away during heat race #3 of the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series round three event held inside the Southern Illinois Center at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds on April 16.  The #9 Montgomeryville Cycle Center/Lucas Oil/Rogers Lake Racing/Saddlemen-sponsored Honda CRF450R-mounted Mees went on to finish 4th in the main event of the DuQuoin Indoor Short Track promoted by Steve Nace Racing and presented by Four Rivers H-D on the day, and after rounds 4 & 5 at Salinas, CA. over the Easter Weekend sits 5th in the overall standings, going into the Memorial Day Weekend Doubleheader at the Illinois State Fairgrounds at Springfield this weekend.

With a week off after the Springfield events, Mees (a former AMA Horizon Award winner and '09 AMA Flat Track Grand National Twins Champion) and a host of other AMA Pro Flat Track regulars will be heading north to Wisconsin to contest the June 3-5 events, starting off with the 27th Annual Dairyland Classic held at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth.  Mees is the 2-Time defending event winner in the event that also boasts previous winners including 3-Time AMA Grand National Twins Champion Kenny Coolbeth, Jr., Shaun Russell, Jethro Halbert and Joe Kopp just to name a few.

7-Time AMA Grand National Champion Chris Carr will be racing and is also scheduled for an autograph signing session at West Bend Harley-Davidson on June 2 from 6-8 P.M. as part of his 2011 Farewell to Flat Track Tour.

If you are in the Plymouth area over the June 3-5 weekend, take the time to check out the Dairyland Classic presented by Hoban Brothers and the other Steve Nace Racing-promoted AMA All Star Flat Track Series events.  You're bound to have a super time and see some great racing!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wisconsin is definitely the place to be June 3rd – 5th if you love flattrack racing. With over $25,000 up for grabs, where else would a flattracker be?

The 27th Annual AMA sanctioned Dairyland Classic presented by Hoban Brothers will be kicking off this exciting weekend of racing on Friday, June 3rd at the Sheboygan Co. Fair Park. This event will offer a payout of over $10,000. Included in this is the Jim Sumner Dash for Cash with over $2,000 going to the top four finishers. Previous winners of the Dash include Jared Mees, JR Schnabel & Joe Kopp.

Saturday night will find the AMA sanctioned All Star National Flat Track Series returning to Wilmot Raceway located at the Kenosha Co. Fairgrounds in Wilmot, WI. After being rained out in 2010 everyone is anxious to test the ½ mile at Wilmot Raceway on June 4th.

To finish the weekend, on June 5th Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, WI will host the AMA sanctioned All Star National Flat Track Series as CW Promotions’ Chris Wilke introduces Flattrack Motorcycle Racing a new ½ mile venue for a Sunday night event.

For more information on the All Star National Fat Track Series contact Steve Nace Racing Promotions at (270)442-7532, http://www.stevenaceracing.com/ or e-mail snace@apex.net.

The AMA sanctioned All Star National Flat Track Series was formed in 2010 to take the place of the AMA Hot Shoe Series when it was discontinued. Our goal is to provide AMA Pro & Expert racers venues to race at during the off weekends and in conjunction with AMA Pro Racing Grand National Championship Flat Track Series. As well as bringing the sport of Flat Track Motorcycle Racing to new venues and potentially new fans across the US.

AMA Pro Flat Track & Stu's Shots Help You Gear Up For the Springfield TT/Mile Doubleheader Weekend, May 28-29

2010 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Champion Jake Johnson looks over his #1 Zanotti Racing/Schaeffer's H-D/MotionPro/Arai-sponsored fleet of Honda CRF450Rs during a break in the action at round 3 of the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series at the Southern Illinois Center in DuQuoin, IL. on April 16, while his fiance checks her messages and keeps abreast of team happenings.  Johnson came home 3rd on the day behind event winner Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. on the #2 Chaplin Kawasaki KX450F and 7-Time AMA Grand National Champion Chris Carr on his Kenny Tolbert-tuned #4 DFW Honda-sponsored Honda CRF450R to keep him in the top 5 in the 2011 series standings.

Jersey Jake is proving himself to be a regular-and-anytime contender on the AMA Pro Flat Track Series schedule, with his ability to adjust to any/all situations at each event and his ability to bring it home, coupled with a great team in the Zanotti Racing camp, Johnson shows up at each and every event ready to go and able to take home rock-solid results.  Starting where he left off at the end of the 2010 season, Johnson has had a great run of top 5 results to start off the 2011 season, including his hard-fought win at round 4 of the series on the Salinas TT.  And lest we all forget that Johnson also has two Singles Series Championships to his credit earned while still a member of the now-defunct Suzuki Flat Track team.

With defending and 2-Time AMA Singles Series Champion Henry Wiles sidelined due to leg/knee surgery as a result of injuries received at DuQuoin, Jake is the last man to have won at the Springfield Rodeo Arena back in '07, and in this reporter's mind and eye a very likely favorite to break Wiles's winning streak on the Singles Series bikes next weekend at the Illini Capitol's premier event.  Add to it his great record on the mile oval not only overall, but in the last 4-5 events, and you have the point leader once the series leaves Springfield after rounds 6 & 7 on May 28-29.  Anything less will be a big surprise for this great champion and spokesperson of the sport who has been a perennial contender on the circuit since winning the AMA Pro Flat Track Rookie of the Year in 2002.

As with any/all AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series race events, there is a healthy list of riders that could prove the above statements mute once the weekend kicks into gear in one short week.  In no particular order of favorites, Chris Carr on his Kenny Tolbert-tuned Chris Carr Racing #4 Lancaster H-D/DFW Honda, the 7-Time Grand National Champ will be in full-swing on his Farewell to Flat Track Tour, and after posting solid results in the first five events of the year will be looking to add to his 78 total wins in the series, and also to his 12 wins on the Fastest Mile in the World.  Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. will be looking mean and green on his #2 Chaplin Kawasaki as well as on his Screamin' Eagle H-D Factory XR, as will JR Schnabel on his new ride with the #33 Monster Energy/Werner Springsteen Kawasakis, '09 AMA Pro Flat Track Pro Singles Champ and current Rookie of the Year candidate Brad Baker on his Baker Boys/ENI #12 Honda and his debut on the weekend on the #12 Lloyd Brothers Motorsports Ducati 1098.

Throw in Jared Mees on his #9 Rogers Lake Racing/Montgomeryville Hondas and XRs, Sammy Halbert on his #7 Fredericktown Yamaha/Kings Kustoms XR, Bryan Smith on his #42 Screamin' Eagle/FastHog.com XR and Kawasaki, and new team mate on the Werner Springsteen Kawasaki #28 Shaun Russell (see more on Russell below.)

Other contenders to watch out for include Johnny Lewis on the #10 Scott Powersports Kawasaki twin and Honda single, Matt Weidman on his #20 Matt's Racing/White's H-D XR and Honda, 2010 AMA Pro Flat Track Motorcycle Superstore.com Pro Singles Champion Jeff Carver on his #23 Van's Yamaha, Willie McCoy on the #59 H-D of Warsaw XR (who finished a VERY close 4th at the September '10 Springfield Mile), and Jethro Halbert, brother to Slammin Sammy, who is entered on the #69 Memphis Shades/Babe DeMay's Racing XR/Yamaha YZF450F, and you have the making of some serious racing stew that any one of which could come out on top after the recipe is done and has finished on the grill.

Who're YOU going to take?!

Springfield AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Flat Track Preview: Get Ready to Rumble!

DAYTONA BEACH, FL (March 20, 2011) - When it comes to Memorial Day and American motorsports, open-wheel car racing has the Indy 500, stock cars have the Coca Cola 600, and the AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Flat Track Championship has the Springfield Mile, held May 28-29 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds.

Long considered the most prestigious race on the series' schedule, the Sunday Springfield Mile (Round 7) also jumpstarts the 2011 Twins season, allowing the big-boy bikes to finally flex their muscles on a track that has historically provided some of the closest racing you'll find in all of motorsports. Kicking off the holiday weekend, however, the Illinois Motorcycle Dealers Association will start by once again turning the Illinois State Fairgrounds Rodeo Arena into an action-packed TT racecourse for Saturday's Round 6 event.

The biggest question leading into Round 6 of the AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Flat Track Championship is who will fill the void left by the absence of defending AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Champion Henry Wiles. Wiles, who's currently recovering (post-surgery) from a leg injury incurred at Round 3, won the last three iterations of the Springfield TT and has been dominant on the 450cc machines. With his recovery process expected to sideline the reining champ through mid-season, however, the field is bristling with potential victors.

Defending Grand National Champion Jake Johnson will be looking for his second Springfield TT victory aboard his Zanotti Racing Honda. Having last won in 2007, Johnson was the last rider to do so before Wiles kicked off his streak. Monster Energy Werner Springsteen's JR Schnabel once had his own win-streak going, though, as he posted victories in 2004, '05, and '06. Then Yamaha-mounted, 2011 will mark Schnabel's first Springfield on a Kawasaki.

Despite those formidable former winners, however, rookie sensation Brad Baker (ENI USA REM) may be the man to beat. Baker had his first National win in hand at Salinas, but a last-lap spill left him with third, which has in turn left Baker more determined than ever. Even adding current points-leader and '09 TT third-place finisher Sammy Halbert (Woody Kyle Racing/Fredericktown Yamaha) to the mix doesn't sum up the depth of field at Springfield, as there are as many as ten other riders with a legitimate shot at the win.

The moment everyone has been waiting for, the start of the May 2010 AMA Pro Flat Track K&N Filters presented by Motorcycle Superstore.com Grand National Championship Springfield Mile main event.  Now called the AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship (unfortunately K&N Filters stepped away after being the title sponsor in the '10 season, but great news in that Harley-Davidson Insurance not only stepped in to be the title sponsor for AMA Pro Flat Track events for the '11 season, they also doubled the year-end payout for the final point standings!), the series is always considered ready to go 'full swing' in terms of the bulk of the schedule, with the kick-off of the Memorial Day Weekend Doubleheader classic.

From left in this shot, Jake Johnson on his #5 Zanotti Racing XR (and eventual winner of the May '10 event), Bryan Smith on the #42 Monster Energy/Werner Springsteen Kawasaki (winner of the September Springfield Mile), Joe Kopp on the #3 Lloyd Brothers Motorsports Ducati (winner of the spring Arizona Mile in 2010), '09 AMA Pro Flat Track Rookie of the Year Steve Bonsey on his #80 Johnny Goad XR (winner of the Calistoga Half Mile in '10), and Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. on his Screamin' Eagle H-D Factory #2 Harley-Davidson XR-750 (winner of the Minnesota Mile in 2010.)

Shaun Russell is interviewed by AMA Pro Flat Track announcer Barry Boone after having won the first semi race at the Springfield Mile on September 5 to qualify for the main event on the Illinois State Fairgrounds oval.  Looking over the #28 Greg Crow Racing/Fox Valley Cycles/MotionPro/Arai-backed H-D XR is one of the team members from the GCR team while Russell looks down to check out his mount.

Russell had a rough year in the 2010 season, only qualifying for three events on the year, including this race at Springfield where he went on to finish in the lucky 13th spot.  But the fire is still there as was shown by this semi win, let alone his 4th in the 2010 Springfield TT main AND Dash events, to go along with winning his heat at Peoria and his 6th in the main and another 4th in the Dash at the Illinois natural amphitheater track.

Russell, who has been a regular competitor and regular top 5-10 finisher in many an event on the AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series for over a decade now, looks to be heading over to the Monster Energy/Werner Springsteen Kawasaki team starting with the Springfield Doubleheader Weekend next week.  The MEWSK team lost rider #42 Bryan Smith between the Daytona Doubleheader rounds in March and the April round at DuQuoin after Flyin' Bryan decided to go off on his own and put together a team riding H-D XRs again after a great year with the new Kawasaki in 2010.  The team had hired JR Schnabel to help with development on the Kawasaki 650R-based twin, and team founder Bill Werner had originally stated they were going to 'stand pat' after Smith made his original announcement.

But with a veteran rider available who knows how to get and keep it up front, apparently the lure of having a pro like Shaun Russell available was too much to pass up.  Bravo for them AND for Shaun!

Having gotten the chance to 'officially' meet Russell at the Gas City Short Track round in June '10 (thanks to my buddy and good friend Larry Lawrence of CycleNews.com and The Rider Files.com) I was pleased as punch to find that he was exactly the type of friendly, outgoing and personable talents that campaigns the AMA Pro Flat Track series after having followed him for years from afar. The Westville, IL. resident has regularly run at the front in the series for over a decade now, and in spite of still waiting for that elusive first GNC win, knows what it takes to run there and compete in The Rolling Thunder Show.  The man with the wide smile and fun attitude has been also featured on several event t-shirts over the years, including the Vernon Downs round event shirt from the 2003 season while running for the Screamin' Eagle team.  Russell has also ridden for the Bartels' H-D team in GN events over the years.

This is a great move for Shaun as well as for the Werner/Springsteen Kawasaki team and could prove to be one of the break-out moves in AMA Pro Flat Track Series competition in the 2011 season.  At the very least, it pits one of the biggest smiles and fiercest competitors in the AMA paddock with three of the other greatest competitors and biggest smiles in the pits, Bill Werner, Jay Springsteen and JR Schnabel.  If I were to use the term 'Super Team' the cliche could be misconstrued, however, so stay tuned to see what this team could become capable of in the hands of these great veterans, it's guaranteed to be exciting for sure!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On Sunday the action moves across the Fairgrounds to the big mile oval, a track that features 140 mph straights and 100 mph lap-times, and that has always favored calculating veterans. Chris Carr, for one, hopes this remains the case. Carr has dubbed 2011 his "Farewell Tour," and there couldn't be a sweeter way to go out than by taking his American Motorcyclist Association-backed Harley-Davidson to a thirteenth Springfield Mile victory.

In addition to Carr, there will be three other riders on track who've taken victories on the Springfield Mile: Werner Springsteen Kawasaki's Bryan Smith, who took victory at last year's Labor Day race; Harley-Davidson Motor Company's Kenny Coolbeth, who won the Springfield Mile in 2007 through 2009; and defending Grand National Champion Jake Johnson, who won last year's Spring race in dominant fashion on his Zanotti Racing Harley-Davidson, and took the Fall 2009 race as well.

Smith has since parted ways with his then-team and will field the Moroney's Harley-Davidson backed Harley. Smith, it should be noted, crossed the finish line first in 2009, but lost that race when his fuel failed a post-race test. (It is rumored Smith may have a personal Kawasaki sitting in the wings, just in case.) Also worth remembering is the very atypical manner in which Johnson won his 2010 event, pulling away from the pack and taking victory by a two-second margin, which constitutes an unusually large lead for Springfield.

The Monster Energy Werner Springsteen team will be trying to defend their win with two new riders: JR Schnabel and Shaun Russell. Schnabel's best Springfield finish thus far is a Suzuki-mounted fourth in 2007, while Russell finished second in 2005 aboard a Harley-Davidson. In other new-rider news, Rookie of the Year points-leader Brad Baker will be making his Mile debut on the ENI USA/Lloyd Brothers Racing Ducati. Joe Kopp showed the power of the team last year when he captured Ducati's first Grand National win (that victory coming at the Arizona Mile), but Baker's got serious work to do in Illinois, as no rookie has ever won the Springfield Mile.

With another doubleheader weekend on tap, the points-race could have a much different look after Memorial Day. A full 58 points are out there for anyone capable of sweeping everything ... another unheard-of occurrence in AMA Pro Flat Track history.

In current championship standings, Sammy Halbert holds an 8-point lead over Jake Johnson, with Kenny Coolbeth and Brad Baker another 21 and 22 points back, respectively. Jared Mees rounds out the top five in points.

It's NOT too late to still get your tickets for the Memorial Day Weekend classic at the Illinois State Fairgrounds races at the Springfield Rodeo Arena and on the infamous Springfield Mile oval.

The folks at the IMDA have for decades been putting on well-managed and super race events, and continue to do so today.  If you haven't seen a race in The Rolling Thunder Show that is promoted and/or managed by the people at the Illinois Motorcycle Dealers Association, you definitely owe it to yourself to do so IMMEDIATELY if not sooner.  These folks don't miss a beat and put on a stellar show for the fans along with the great group of folks at AMA Pro Flat Track.

You can check out seating arrangements (my choice for the TT or ST events at the Springfield Rodeo Arena--on the hill or ANYWHERE in the stands, and up high anywhere in the grandstands on the oval) right here:

Sammy Halbert Finishes Lucky 13th in AMA Pro Road Racing Vance & Hines XR1200 Series Debut at Infineon Raceway

Miriam Deitcher, who brings us Flat Track Live Facebook coverage for AMA Pro Flat Track events (and other outstanding flat track series events across the North American continent), interviews Sammy Halbert at the DuQuoin Indoor Short Track, round 3 of the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series on April 16.  Slammin Sammy's #7 Woody Kyle Racing/
Fredericktown Yamaha/Kings Kustoms-sponsored Yamaha YZ450F is being attended to by one of his crew members just before Halbert went out and won semi race two to qualify for the main event at the Steve Nace Racing promoted indoor race inside the Southern Illinois Center on the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds.
Halbert went on to finish 5th in the main, and over the next weekend's events at the Salinas Sports Complex in Califinornia, finished 5th in the round 4 TT event and 3rd in the round 5 Short Track event.  He will roll into Springfield, IL. on May 28-29 for rounds 6 & 7 for the annual TT and Mile events at the Illinois State Fairgrounds with an eight point lead in the championship over defending AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Champion, Jake Johnson, 103-95.  Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. rounds out the top three early in the season with 74 points.

Sammy has been keeping EXTREMELY busy, as he always does, but with a couple of new twists added into his usual regimen.  The last few weeks have seen Slammy riding a couple of track days in Jason Pridmore's STAR Schools, in preperation for his professional road racing debut at Infineon on the H-D XR1200 this weekend.  Sammy also did some time on a Speedway bike a little over 10 days ago.
However, his debut in the AMA Pro Road Racing Vance & Hines XR1200 Series race over the weekend was anything but easy, besides coming to grip with an over-550 lb. road racing machine for his pro road racing debut.  During qualifying, Sammy suffered a get-off (un-hurt, thankfully!) that forced his #7 HOG Racing/Harley Owners Group/Vance & Hines-backed team to work double-time in order to get the XR1200 ready for the race final.  He finished a very credible 13th while staying on the lead lap, and also staying out of trouble along the way.  Bravo Sammy for bringing it home and breaking your pro road racing cherry along the way!

Round 2 Race Report: AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Series

SONOMA, CA (May 14, 2011) - Chris Fillmore earned his career first AMA Pro Road Race win today, taking victory in the Round 2 Infineon Raceway AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 event. The RMR Bruce Rossmeyer Daytona Racing rider, who'd taken pole earlier in the day, led nine of the contest's eleven laps, and he was joined on the podium by Drag Specialties riders Michael Barnes and Steve Rapp in second and third, respectively.

"This is my first AMA Pro win," said Fillmore, "and I'm glad I was able to get it here at Infineon. Everything was great."

The race was halted briefly under red-flag conditions on Lap 5 following a crash by Gerry Signorelli that left his bike on the front straight's racing line. Once the race resumed, however, so too did Barnes, who'd diced with Fillmore through earlier laps, and teammate Rapp, whose hurry to get off the line resulted in a jumped restart and an attendant five-second penalty.

Rapp, who also contended today's AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike race, continued to charge as quickly as possible once the track went green again, trying desperately to offset the penalty to whatever extent he could in the remaining laps. Although he was second across the finish line, however, the penalty bumped Rapp back to third.

"The first couple of laps, I had to remember I wasn't riding a 200-horsepower SuperBike," said Rapp, "but after a few laps I got right into it. These bikes are a lot of fun to ride, but I knew I had my work cut out once I got the five-second penalty. I tried to stay with Chris, but he just took off after the second start."
