AMA Pro Road Racing Previews 2012 Daytona SportBike Series & Season-Opening Daytona 200

Jake Zemke maneuvers the #98 Erion Honda Racing/Parts Unlimited/PJ-1/MTX-sponsored Honda CBR600RR through turn 14 at the Mid Ohio Sports Car Course during a qualifying session for the AMA Formula Xtreme Championship Series round at the Honda Super Cycle Weekend Presented by Dunlop Tire in July 2004.  Zemke, who would go on to win the 2008 (and final) AMA Formula Xtreme Championship, won the Daytona 200 while riding for the American Honda team in 2006.

Zemke will join former Daytona 200 winners Jason DiSalvo (2011) and John Ashmead (1989 when the 200 was a full-on Superbike event) in the field of 47 riders now pre-entered for the Saturday, March 17 endurance race.  It was just announced last week that Zemke had signed on to ride a Ducshop Racing Ducati 748 in his return to the track that he won the Rolex watch at for last year's event.  Dunlop has been working double overtime to ensure no tire problems plague the field like what were experienced during last year's event that saw the 200 shorted to the Daytona 147.

AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike:
2012 Season-Opening DAYTONA® 200 Week Preview

71st Running of Historic Race to Air Saturday, March 17 at 2:30 p.m.ET/11:30 a.m. PT on SPEED

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 13, 2012) - The 2012 AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike season kicks off this weekend from the high banks of Daytona International Speedway, with 47 competitors entered to take part in the 71st running of the historic DAYTONA® 200. America's longest-running endurance motorcycle road race, the DAYTONA® 200 was first held on the shores of Daytona Beach in 1937. Today, the 200-mile, 57-lap race pits man against machine in a demanding battle on the 3.51-mile traditional motorcycle course at the famed speedway.

Practice and qualifying for this year's event will be held on Thursday, March 15 and Friday, March 16, with the start of the race scheduled for Saturday, March 17 at 1:00 p.m. local time.

In last year's contest, fortune was looking down upon Jason DiSalvo as the always-impressive Team Latus crew persevered during a red-flag situation to repair the No. 40 Ducati 848 and get the Batavia, N.Y. native back in the show for the race's final laps. DiSalvo didn't disappoint, earning victory as the sun began to set on the high banks. For 2012, DiSalvo returns with the same team and a different brand to begin his 2012 AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike title fight. Paying homage an American motorcycle racing legend, DiSalvo's helmet, leathers and Team Latus Motors Racing Triumph Daytona 675 will feature a one-off design scheme for Daytona in the style of the classic, championship-winning No. 9 Triumph Triple ridden by the late Gary Nixon.

Grid positions for the DAYTONA® 200 will be determined by the combined results of two timed qualifying sessions scheduled for Friday, March 16 at 8:45 a.m. and later that same day at 1:10 p.m. The DAYTONA® 200 Pole Award, and the accompanying Rolex Daytona Cosmograph, will be given to the pole position winner at noon on Saturday, March 17 during opening ceremonies for the 71st running of the historic 57-lap, 200-mile race.

Jake Zemke, winner of the 2006 DAYTONA® 200 and of last year's DAYTONA® 200 Pole Award, will also be back at Daytona on a new brand. The Californian led the majority of the 2011 DAYTONA® 200 before finishing the race in third and has joined forces with Ducshop to compete aboard the No. 98 Ducshop Racing Ducati 848 in the 2012 season. Italian Dario Marchetti will compete aboard the team's No. 23 Ducshop Racing Ducati 848 entry.

The importance of the team component to success in the DAYTONA® 200 is often underestimated. As the only event on the calendar that requires pit stops, with all of the intricacies of quick tire changes and safe refueling, it's easy to overlook the fact that the race is often decided by just fractions of a second - last year DiSalvo had an official margin of victory of just 0.029 seconds over Vesrah Suzuki's Cory West. West will be looking to improve by one position this year and top the podium on the No. 57 Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki GSX-R600, racing with and against new teammate and GoPro Daytona SportBike rookie Benny Solis (No. 35 Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki Team Suzuki GSX-R600) for the duration of the season.

Following a successful bid in AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike, 2010 AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike Champion Martin Cardenas returns to the class aboard the No. 36 GEICO Suzuki GSX-R600. Cardenas' last result in the DAYTONA® 200 came in 2009, when he finished ninth. That ninth place finish isn't indicative of the Colombian's innate ability however, which becomes apparent when noting the 17 victories he earned over three years in the top tiers of AMA Pro Road Racing competition, including a rare maiden victory in his debut National Guard SuperBike season last year. Dane Westby, riding the No. 5 M4 Broaster Chicken Suzuki GSX-R600, poses an equally-significant threat and both riders' teams stem from the same racing DNA, well-known for being some of the paddock's most experienced endurance racing teams.

Another team with a strong history in endurance racing is Graves Yamaha. This year, the team's impressive two-rider stable of debut-race winners includes Cameron Beaubier (No. 6 Yamaha Extended Service, Graves, Yamaha YZF-R6) and Garrett Gerloff (No. 8 Yamaha Extended Service, Graves, Yamaha YZF-R6). Beaubier is no stranger to victory at Daytona, having earned a victory in his first AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport race in the 2010 season, and Gerloff's Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport debut race likewise ended in victory at New Jersey Motorsports Park last year.

The recently-created RoadRace Factory Red Bull Team also has a solid two-rider GoPro Daytona SportBike roster which is sure to be at the front when the checkers fall. JD Beach (No. 95 RoadRace Factory/Red Bull Yamaha YZF-R6) led two laps of last year's contest and finished the race in fourth, and the 2008 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup Champion has been training hard in the offseason with new teammate Jake Gagne (No. 123 RoadRace Factory/Red Bull Yamaha YZF-R6). Gagne is a GoPro Daytona SportBike rookie whose accolades also include a Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup Championship, earned two years after Beach in 2010.

LTD Racing's Huntley Nash (No. 75 LTD Racing Yamaha YZF-R6) earned two Top 10s last year and now has a full season of GoPro Daytona SportBike under his belt. Beginning at Daytona, LTD Racing's second Yamaha will be piloted by 2011 SuperSport West Champion and GoPro Daytona SportBike rookie David Gaviria (No. 700 LTD Racing Yamaha YZF-R6). Gaviria's last-lap victory in 2011's SuperSport Race 2 at Daytona is a clear indication of the Colombian's riding skill and LTD Racing's two-rider force will be one to be reckoned with in 2012.

Another SuperSport West Champion will be back at Daytona in 2012, with 2010 SuperSport West Champion Joey Pascarella slotted to ride the No. 52 Project 1 Atlanta Yamaha YZF-R6. The combination of Project 1 Atlanta and Pascarella is sure to be fast; The Project 1 Atlanta Yamaha earned pole position and led 25 laps of last year's contest with Zemke at the controls and Pascarella has already demonstrated his winning ways at Daytona with a 2010 victory in SuperSport Race 2.

Tommy Aquino (No. 827 SGA Racing/Yamaha Champions Riding School Yamaha YZF-R6), who finished third in the 2011 AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike Rider Championship, will be racing in the DAYTONA® 200 round of AMA Pro Road Racing before heading overseas to race in the CEV Moto2 Spanish National Championship for Wilmax Racing. Aquino's teammate on the SGA Racing squad is Robertino Pietri (No. 16 Katra/SGA Racing Yamaha YZF-R6), who returns to full-time AMA Pro Road Racing competition following two seasons of racing in the Moto2 Championship.

Yamaha will be well represented at Daytona, with 28 of the 47 GoPro Daytona SportBike riders entered on the Yamaha YZF-R6. The most recent Yamaha added to the fold is the No. 50 Meen Motorsports Racing entry, which combines the riding talent Bobby Fong with some of the industry's best tuners.

The largest team entered in this year's contest, Triple Crown Industries will host a four-rider lineup consisting of Paul Allison (No. 20 Triple Crown Industries Yamaha YZF-R6), Michael Barnes (No. 34 Triple Crown Industries Yamaha YZF-R6), Austin Dehaven (No. 56 Triple Crown Industries Yamaha YZF-R6) and Sam Rozynski (No. 175 Triple Crown Industries Yamaha YZF-R6). Allison finished 10th in last year's DAYTONA® 200.

Fan-favorite Melissa Paris recently inked a deal that will see her competing aboard the No. 13 Sea Miracle Yamaha Racing Yamaha YZF-R6 during the 2012 AMA Pro Road Racing season. Paris, the wife of two-time, reigning AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike Champion Josh Hayes, holds the record for the highest finish for a female rider in the 71-year history of the DAYTONA® 200 with her 2009 finish of 21st place.

The bar was raised for the DAYTONA® 200 mileage record in 2011 and both the current record holder and one of his only close contenders will be at it again in 2012. Heading into last year's contest, Ricky Orlando (No. 12 Ricky Orlando Racing Kawasaki ZX-6R) was nine miles behind Rick Shaw's record of 3,728 miles but finished the race on top with 3,857 miles. 1989 DAYTONA® 200 winner John Ashmead (No. 37 Peter Brady Racing Kawasaki ZX-6R) now sits in third place with 3,679 miles, and is still mathematically within reach of claiming the record for his own if the chips fall in his favor this weekend.

The DAYTONA® 200 will be televised in a same-day delay broadcast on SPEED, scheduled for Saturday, March 17, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. ET (11:30 a.m. PT). The SPEED on-air team for AMA Pro Road Racing will include veteran motorcycle broadcaster Leigh Diffey providing play-by-play, with AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Scott Russell joining him in the booth for analysis. Longtime SPEED reporter and host Greg White will provide reports from the pits.

AMA Pro Fan Walk sessions will take place on two occasions over the race weekend, during which fans will be able to circulate on pit lane to visit with their favorite riders and teams from AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike, AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike, AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport and the AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Series. There will be a host of additional fan-specific activities and events during the DAYTONA® 200 Week at Daytona International Speedway, including demo rides, vendor offerings at the Daytona Motorcycle Marketplace and live entertainment, games and bikini contests at Thunder Alley. Another experience not to miss is the seventh-annual "Spring Dash Around Daytona" - the chance to take two laps around Daytona International Speedway's 3.56-mile road course on Saturday, March 17 immediately after the DAYTONA® 200.

Live Timing & Scoring of all on-track sessions will be available at http://live.amaproracing.com/rr/. AMA Road Racing: Partial Schedule Set for 2012 AMA Superbike Championship Season in AMA Pro Road Racing

Eric Bostrom on the #32 Ducati Austin/Parts Unlimited/Michelin/Alpinestars-sponsored Ducati 999R leads a pack of riders out of turn 14 in the run up the hill to the stripe early in race two action of the AMA Chevrolet Superbike Championship presented by Parts Unlimited at Road America in June 2004.  EBoz was in his first of two years riding for the Ducati Austin team, winning several events on the big V-twin for the Italian marque, and would finish the day in the 6th position.  He would go on to finish 7th in the season's championship standings after missing the final two rounds and four races of the year.

Following closely on the heels of the red #32 Ducati is then-4-Time AMA Superbike Champion Mat Mladin on the #1 American Suzuki/Yoshimura/Motorex/Dunlop-backed GSX-R1000, who would go on to a 3rd place finish in race two at Elkhart Lake, and by the end of the season capture his 5th of 7-total AMA Superbike Championships for the Yoshimura Suzuki team.  Mladin would go on to break all of the records in terms of poles and race wins in the premier class of the AMA Pro Road Racing Series and retire to his home country of Australia after the '09 season, and after winning his 7th championship.

'08 AMA Supersport Champ and '09 Daytona 200 winner Ben Bostrom lays some rubber down out of 14 while trying to keep the duo in reach on his #155 Honda/Parts Unlimited/Alpinestars/Madif-sponsored CBR1000RR in route to a 5th place finish for the day at the track located approximately 60 miles north of Milwaukee.  In his second year back from racing in the WSBK Championship, BBoz would end the year ranked as the 4th rider in the championship battle.  The fan favorite is the only active rider in this shot still contending the AMA Superbike Championship, and looks to be back again for his second year in 2012 riding for the Michael Jordan Suzuki team on their #23 Jordan Brand-sponsored GSX-R1000.

'95 AMA Superbike Champion, 5-Time AMA 600 Supersport Champion and 5-Time Daytona 200 winner Miguel Duhamel also lays down a streak of rubber as he powers his #17 American Honda/Shoei/Joe Rocket/Dunlop-sponsored CBR1000RR in his romp to the front and the win at Road America.  Duhamel would win the event by just over four seconds over runner-up Jake Zemke and another six seconds back to 3rd place man Mladin, and would finish second behind the Aussie in the '04 championship standings.

And bringing up the rear of this pack while also laying down a patch of race rubber is runner-up in this event, Jake Zemke on the #98 Honda/Parts Unlimited/PJ1/MTX-sponsored Erion Honda CBR1000RR.  Zemke would finish the year ranked in the 3rd spot of the championship battle and would go on to win the '08 AMA Formula Xtreme Championship.  Jake took part in the British Superbike Championship Series this season while riding in the EVO class of the European series after contesting the season-opening Daytona 200 while riding a Team Atlanta Yamaha.

With the 2012 season starting to come into place with the announcement of six rounds confirmed for the AMA Pro Road Racing Series, things are starting to come around for the premier series on the North American continent.  With other rounds in the making, the 2012 horizon is starting to look bright some 4 1/2 months before the season kicks-off in Daytona in mid-March.  Stay tuned as we keep you up to date with upcoming announcements for the series upcoming season.

AMA Pro Racing Announces Contract Renewals for Six Tracks on the 2012 AMA Pro Road Racing Schedule

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (October 28, 2011) - AMA Pro Racing is pleased to announce contract renewals for six tracks on the 2012 AMA Pro Road Racing schedule.

The series will feature the same class structure in 2012. On most race weekends, fans can expect to see doubleheaders for AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike, AMA Pro Daytona SportBike and AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport, while the AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Series will continue to battle it out in a single race format.

Daytona International Speedway will once again play host to AMA Pro Road Racing as the series kicks off a new season. The opening event is scheduled for March 15 - 17, 2012 and will feature the 71st running of the historic Daytona 200 on Saturday afternoon, March 17.

AMA Pro Road Racing teams will make a return visit to Infineon Raceway in May but at an earlier date than previous seasons. The series returns to the 2.32-mile circuit, which is located in the picturesque wine country of Sonoma, Ca., on the weekend of May 4 - 6, 2012.

Tooele, Utah's Miller Motorsports Park was added back to the schedule in 2011, and America's finest motorcycle racing talent will again be showcased alongside the international standouts in World Superbike on the weekend of May 25 - 28, 2012. The event will feature single races for each of AMA Pro Road Racing's classes.

Fans in the Midwest will be happy to know that the series will be heading back to Road America on the weekend of June 1 - 3, 2012. The track, located in Elkhart Lake, Wis., has been on the schedule since 1980 and is the longest circuit the riders will face next year, measuring in at 4.048 miles.

Thrilling Sunday sprint races for AMA Pro SuperBike, Daytona SportBike and SuperSport will once again be featured alongside MotoGP as part of the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The international event at the 2.238-mile natural road course in Monterey, Ca. has been pushed back one week from last year's date, scheduled for the weekend of July 27 - 29, 2012.

New Jersey Motorsports Park has impressed fans and competitors alike since debuting on the AMA Pro Road Racing schedule on Labor Day weekend in 2009, and the 2.25-mile track in Millville, N.J., will see the return of the series one week later in 2012, September 7 - 9, 2012.

AMA Pro Racing is working in conjunction with M1 Powersports for promotion of additional events that were not included in this release. Details about those exciting events will be released as soon as they are available.

Jake Zemke to Run British Superbike EVO Series for WFR Honda

Eric Bostrom on the #32 Ducati Austin/Parts Unlimited/Michelin-sponsored Ducati 999R leads then 4-Time (and future 7-Time) AMA Superbike Champion Mat Mladin on the #1 American Suzuki/Yoshimura/Motorex/Dunlop-backed Suzuki GSX-R1000 early in race two action of the AMA Superbike Championship Series at Road America in June of 2004.
Right behind Mladin, a partially obscured Miguel Duhamel on the #17 American Honda/Shoei/Dunlop-sponsored Honda CBR1000RR tries to keep the duo close, while Jake Zemke on the #98 Erion Honda/Parts Unlimited/PJ1/MTX-sponsored Honda CBR1000RR and Ben Bostrom on the #155 American Honda CBR1000RR (and team mate to Duhamel) try to keep the action close during the final premier event of the weekend at the Suzuki Superbike Doubleheader at the Elkhart Lake, WI. track.
Duhamel would go on to take the victory while Zemke and Mladin would follow him home to round out the race two podium.  Mladin went on to clinch his 5th of 7 total AMA Superbike Championships for the 2004 year with Duhamel, Zemke and BBoz rounding out the top 4 in the 2004 championship battle.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Great news for Jake Zemke fans comes from the great folks at Cycle News.com.  Zemke, who put the Project One Yamaha on the pole for the Daytona 200 back in March, and came home a respectable 3rd in the shortened race, has accepted a ride on a WFR Honda CBR1000RR in the British Superbike Championship EVO Series.  The EVO Series is essentially a 'Superstock'-spec series similar to what used to run as one of the campanion classes in the AMA Road Racing Series back before the '09 season, running closer to stock chassis and engine mods, but with slick tires mounted ala the superbike class.

After the downturn in the economy and the U.S.-based AMA Road Racing Series of the last several years, Zemke went from winning the '08 AMA Formula Xtreme Championship to signing with the Michael Jordan Motorsports team in the 2010 season in the premier AMA Superbike Championship Series on Suzuki GSX-R1000s sponsored by The National Guard.  Taking his first two maiden wins for the team at Daytona in March of 2010, Zemke struggled to equal his early-season results and ended up 3rd in the year-end standings behind eventual champion Josh Hayes and runner-up Tommy Hayden.  When the 2011 season rolled around, he wasn't offered another year with the team and was left without a ride except for the Daytona one-off riding for the Project One team.

You can read the story here thanks to Paul Carruthers at Cycle News.com and we'll be behind Jake all the way when he lifts a leg over the WFR CBR for the first time on June 17.  Read on:

AMA Road Racing: Off-Season Ramblings & 'Partial' 2011 Schedule Released

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jake Zemke on the #98 Erion Racing/Parts Unlimited/PJ1-sponsored Honda CBR600RR leads Miguel Duhamel on the #17 American Honda/Shoei/Joe Rocket-sponsored Honda CBR600RR during the Lockhart Phillips USA Formula Xtreme final event, as part of the Honda Super Cycle Weekend presented by Dunlop Tire at Mid Ohio in July of 2004. Duhamel went on to win and lead the most laps in the process, while Zemke finished just inside the points on the day.
The future team mates would end up ruling the Formula Xtreme Series due to Honda going all out in the class to showcase it's 'mini superbike' in the 600 inline-based class. Duhamel also went on to win the Formula Xtreme Championship over Zemke enroute to winning eight events to Zemke's one win in the eleven race series in '04. Between the two of them they scored 18 podiums that season.
Duhamel has seen limited action in the AMA Road Racing series since the bottom fell out after the end of the '08 season, making an appearance at Daytona in 2009 on a Pascal Picotte-led run in the Daytona 200, and then appearing at Laguna Seca this year on a Ducati. The 5-Time Daytona 200 winner, '95 AMA Superbike Champion and multi-time AMA 600 Supersport and Formula Xtreme Champion was always one of the highlights at any AMA Road Racing event, and was always considered a threat on the track. Off the track, at least to this writer, he was one of the most congenial and approachable, let alone down right comical riders in the paddock.
Zemke, who went on to win the '08 AMA Formula Xtreme Championship, rode an Erion Racing Honda during the '09 season in the Daytona Sportbike Class, and then moved back to the premier AMA Superbike Championship Series in 2010 riding for the Michael Jordan Motorsports/National Guard Suzuki team. That seemed to work out pretty well for Jake in winning both opening rounds at Daytona in March, and despite not being able to duplicate his spot atop the box through the rest of the season, he still finished 3rd in the championship behind eventual champ Josh Hayes and Tommy Hayden.
With the Jordan team signing Ben Bostrom and Roger Lee Hayden for the 2011 season (and possibly still running a third bike for Aaron Yates as of this writing), Zemke was left out in the cold and is still looking for work. Of course, he isn't the only rider 'in waiting' or unsigned as of yet for the 2011 AMA Road Racing season. With the release yesterday of what is being termed a 'partial' schedule, and Dunlop testing tires at Daytona next week and in January, there should be a bunch of dominoes ready to drop in terms of who goes where. Stay tuned!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With AMA Pro Road Racing releasing what is being termed a 'partial' schedule for the 2011 AMA Road Racing Series yesterday, there are still plenty of questions to go around as to who is going where for the upcoming season. And with Dunlop doing some tire testing at Daytona next week (and then another follow-up test scheduled in January) the ball should start to drop pretty soon as to what the rest of the unsigned riders will be doing next season.

At this point in the AMA Superbike Championship for '11 we know Michael Jordan has signed Ben Bostrom and Roger Lee Hayden. There is still a possibility being mentioned that once Aaron Yates heals completely from his March Fontana crash that they may run a third bike for Double A-Ron. 2010 AMA Superbike Champion Josh Hayes re-signed with Graves Yamaha for a couple more years, Eric Bostrom is 'supposedly' coming back for the full season with the Cycle World/Attack Performance team (and seems to be returning with a Kawasaki from chatter being heard.) Larry Pegram parted ways with Ducati, and less then 10 days later said he would be competing on the BMW for the 2011 championship.

But from there, it gets real murky. 2010 runner-up Tommy Hayden is still unsigned, as is Blake Young. John Hopkins is healed from his wrist surgery, but no mention of him returning-or not-with the Monster Energy/Road Racing World.com team. Chris Ulrich was giving 'two-up' charity rides on the west coast a few weeks ago, and in all probability should be returning with the ME/RRW.com team.

The next few weeks should get interesting, and we'll all just have to hang tight and wait and see what happens next. I've posted a couple of links written by Paul Carruthers, who is back at the helm of the newly-risen Cycle News.com (which is great news in itself, as well!)

The first story is the release of the schedule yesterday by AMA Road Racing. Road Atlanta and Fontana are no where to be found, and as of this release, Barber is TBD (to be determined) and the VIR round is shown, but also TBD. Not since the '91 season in AMA Superbike have I seen a slimmer schedule for the U.S. series in what was once one of, if not, the premier superbike championship in the world. In the second story PC talks with Jake Zemke, who was left off the roster at Michael Jordan Motorsports in spite of his 3rd place in the championship this year to go along with his double win at Daytona in March, the first-ever for MJ in the premier series after seven seasons of competition.

Stay tuned, and keep your fingers crossed!

Hayes and Cardenas Bag Race 1 Wins at AMA Infineon Raceway

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Martin Cardenas on the #36 M4 Emgo Suzuki GSX-R600 leads eventual winner Ben Bostrom on the #155 Graves Yamaha YZF-R6 in AMA Supersport action at Mid Ohio in July of 2008. Bostrom got around Cardenas and romped to the Supersport final win that day and went on to clinch the 2008 AMA Supersport Championship later in the year. Following close on their heels are Erion Parts Unlimited Racing team mates Josh Hayes on the #4 and Jake Zemke on the #98 Honda CBR600RR's. Zemke went on to win the AMA Formula Xtreme Championship in '08 over team mate Hayes and between them won 8 races and garnered 16 podiums in nine rounds.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Josh Hayes on the #4 Graves Yamaha YZF-R1 won his first race of the year today in the AMA Superbike West Coast Jam at Infineon Raceway, while Martin Cardenas on the #36 Monster Energy Suzuki GSX-R600 took top honors in the Daytona Sportbike class in race one action today. Hayes amassed over a 5.5 second lead in the AMA Superbike race before cruising to an eventual 3.6 second win over Ben Bostrom on the #155 Clark Motorsports Yamaha R1, with Larry Pegram on the #72 Foremost Insurance Ducati 1198R another 3.5 seconds back. The Daytona Sportbike race went back and forth between Cardenas and '09 AMA Daytona Sportbike Champion Danny Eslick on the #1 Geico RMR Racing GSX-R600 until Martin pulled away to win by just over .8 seconds. Tommy Aquino on the Graves Yamaha YZF-R6 #6 was another tick behind to finish third with the top three covered by less then a second.
Results of both races are below, and you can catch the action on SpeedTV tonight 10 P.M.-Midnight EDT and more to be shown Sunday at 2 P.M. EDT and then again Sunday Midnight-2 A.M. EDT. I've also included AMA links to their results and live timing to follow tomorrow's action as well if you get the chance.
In other news, Kurtis Roberts return to the track didn't go quite as planned as the Ace Racing Yamaha R1 suffered what sounded to be semi-terminal electrical gremlins that kept him and the team off the track all day on Friday. We hope the team can get these problems ironed out before the next round at Road America in early June. Hang in there, Kurtis!

Eric Bostrom's Coming Off the Farm to Race Some AMA Superbike Events

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Eric Bostrom on the #32 Austin Ducati/Parts Unlimited Ducati 999R leads Mat Mladin on the #1 Team Yoshimura GSX-R1000 and Miguel Duhamel on the #17 American Honda CBR1000RR early in superbike race two action at Road America in June of 2004. Ben Bostrom on the #155 American Honda CBR1000RR and Jake Zemke on the #98 Erion Racing Honda CBR1000RR follow closely into turn 14. E-Boz ran for Team Austin Ducati in the '04-'05 seasons and won two races with them in the '05 season. His return to the track will be watched closely by many since he retired to the mango farm at the end of the '08 season, and will be great for more parity in the AMA Superbike Series for the three race events he is planning to run.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
E-Boz gets a knee down while qualifying for the Mid Ohio AMA Superbike round in July of 2000. This was his first of his four years with Team Kawasaki riding the ZX7-R-based superbike. Bostrom finished in the runner-up spot in '01 and '02 in the premier class for Team Green while winning several races and won the '01 AMA 600 Supersport Championship for them as well on a ZX6-R-based machine. The youngest of the Boz Bros. also won the '96 and '97 AMA 883/SuperTwins Championship as well as the '98 AMA Formula Extreme Championship.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In 1999, E-Boz was asked to 'fill-in' for Miguel Duhamel (as if anyone could do so-nothing against EB!) on the American Honda RC45 while Duhamel was out injured as a result of his devastating Road Atlanta crash. In this shot Eric is on the outside (on the screaming RC45 #32) of Vance and Hines Ducati's #95 Anthony 'The Go Show' Gobert going through the carousel turn at Mid Ohio in superbike final action in the summer of '99. Close behind are Pascal Picotte on the #21 H-D VR1000 (partially hidden), Jamie Hacking on the Team Yamaha YZF-750 #92 and Larry Pegram on the #72 Team Fast By Ferraci Ducati.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Eric Bostrom hammers the throttle WFO in qualifying for the Road America AMA Superstock round in June of 2006. Eric hooked up with the Graves Motorsports Yamaha team for the '06-'08 seasons putting in time the first two years on the YZF-R1 superstock machine and also in the Formula Extreme class. EB moved to the superbike class with Graves for the '08 season, which was Yamaha's first official year back in the class in several years, and placed 4th in the class behind his team mate Jason DiSalvo that year. After the '08 season he announced his 'retirement' to the mango farm in Brazil that he and his older brother Ben had purchased.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miguel Duhamel on the #17 American Honda RC51 leads Eric Bostrom on the #32 Team Kawasaki ZX-7, Mat Mladin on the #1 Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R750 and his team mate, and eventual dual-weekend winner Aaron Yates on the #20 Yosh Suzuki GSX-R750. Bostrom would win several of his 15 superbike/premier class wins while running for Team Green, including a round at Road America and one at Mid Ohip in '02. This was going through the carousel at Mid Ohio during AMA Superbike race two action in the summer of 2000, Eric's first year with Kaw. Other then Mad Mat, Eric was the most dominant of superbike racers in this span, garnering two runner-up spots in the championship behind Mat in '01 and behind Nicky Hayden in '02.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Great news was rumored over the weekend, and then confirmed the first of this week that Eric Bostrom, the youngest of the Boz Brothers racing duo, would be returning to AMA Superbike Series action for several events later this year. Partnering with Cycle World, Yoshimura Suzuki and Attack Performance, E-Boz will be returning to the track in late July at Laguna Seca, and also competing in rounds at VIR in August and the season-ender at Barber in late September.
After 'retiring' at the end of the 2008 season to work the property in Brazil that he and his brother had purchased, E-Boz all but dissappeared off the racing radar while working in South America.
The timing must have been right, and maybe the former two-time premier class runner-up and the '01 AMA 600 Supersport Champion felt that way as well. With the new rules in the class that were established for the '09 season, and coupled with the loss of 7-time champ Mat Mladin to retirement and 3-time champ Ben Spies now off to MotoGP, the racing has gotten much closer throughout the class and parity is certainly the norm now. Other then the fact the class is still filled with Suzuki's, there are a number of stout teams and racers that could win on any given day. With E-Boz back in the mix, and if he is up to par after having been away for the better part of two years from active competition, you should be able to throw his name in the mix as well.
Highly missed by the fans, it will be good to see E-Boz back in action again and thrilling us all with his riding prowess. We will be watching and rooting for Eric and looking forward to seeing him back in the AMA series where he belongs!
We wish Eric the best of luck and can't wait to see him put it on the box with this new effort. Hopefully it works out good enough to put him on a full time ride for the 2011 season. Fingers crossed! And go get 'em man!

Zemke Does the Double at Daytona and Nips Tommy Hayden at the Line by .009 Seconds!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jake Zemke on the Team Honda CBR1000RR Superbike during qualifying for the AMA round at Barber Motorsports Park in April of 2007. Jake won the second superbike race today at Daytona to make it 2-0 on the competition and for Team Jordan Motorsports for a fine start to the 2010 AMA Superbike season. Today was Jake's second win as well on a Suzuki after having ridden Honda's for the better part of the last decade. Looks like a pretty good career move....

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tommy Hayden on his Team Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 during superbike race one action at Barber Motorsports Park in April of 2007. Hayden came up .002 seconds short of his initial win again today after garnering second in yesterday's race one. Still, a good start for Tommy Gun.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ben 'B-Boz' Bostrom on his Team Graves Motorsports Yamaha R1-based SuperStock bike during qualifying for the Barber AMA round in April of 2007. The '98 Superbike Champ and 2009 Daytona 200 Champ came from 1.2 seconds behind setting the fastest lap of the race on lap 9 to nab third place today .081 seconds behind Jake Zemke and Tommy Hayden. It looks like Ben and Pat Clark Motorsports may have something to bring to the table this year and bringing in outside-the-industry sponsors in the Palms Resort and Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jake Zemke made the career switch of his life this year and he more then proved it today by winning his second Daytona SuperBike race in as many days and giving Team Jordan Suzuki it's second premier class victory in as many days as well. Zemke made a run at the end on Tommy Hayden and beat him to the line by .009 seconds. Ben Bostrom was third .081 back on Zemke.

I wanted to add the press conference from the second superbike race as was put together for us fans by Susan Haas over at Dean Adam's super site www.superbikeplanet.com. If you can't read the whole thing, take the time to scroll down to the bottom and the comment that Ben Bostrom makes about the great week it was for all at Daytona, and how the feeling in the paddock was MUCH better to start the year off from the DMG-run series then the stain it left on everyone's shirts from the 2009 version. Very good sounding news for the fans and the competitors after what everyone had to endure last year. Bravo to the AMA and the DMG folks! Keep up the great work!

One of Dean Adam's long-time scribes, Susan Haas, has the superbike press conference from yesterday's first round event at Daytona over at www.superbikeplanet.com.
Jake Zemke talks about what it's like to win at Daytona, to have won a superbike race after over 3 1/2 years, and what it was like to do so on a Suzuki after having fought tooth and nail on Honda's for so long in the class. Check it out here for a great read:

Daytona Superbike Race 1 to Team Jordan's Jake Zemke

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jake Zemke #98 (this year now #54), Erion Racing/Parts Unlimited Honda CBR600RR in rain practice for the AMA FX class at Road America's turn 10 in 2008. Zemke went on to clinch the '08 AMA Formula Xtreme Championship and won his first AMA Superbike Race in 45 months today at Daytona.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On his maiden voyage aboard the Jordan Motorsports/National Guard Suzuki GSX-R1000, Jake Zemke pulled off his first win in AMA Superbike competition in over 3 1/2 years by beating Tommy Hayden on the Rockstar Makita Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 by a mere .238 seconds. Pegram Racing/Foremost Insurance-sponsored Larry Pegram finished third a scant .021 seconds back. The top five were covered by .307 seconds at the end. And Zemke also was able to celebrate even more as he was able to give Michael Jordan's team it's VERY FIRST win in AMA Superbike competition in the seven years they have been contesting the series. Bravo and take a bow Jumpman Folks. You deserve it!
In what is shaping up to be a good year of racing thanks to off-season changes by the AMA/DMG folks in terms of leadership, rules making and atonement, and a variety of safety maladies that made the U.S. series a laughingstock, the first round of superbike competition was very intense. And with the rules packages in place now, this is looking to be a barn-burner of a year competition-wise.
You can read the full results and race re-caps here thanks to all the fine folks at http://www.roadracingworld.com/, http://www.cyclenews.com/ and http://www.speedtv.com/ who are on site at the legendary racetrack and doing a great job of keeping us land-locked race fans up to date and in the know. Round two of superbike action hit's the track at 4:00 P.M. EST tomorrow afternoon.

Jake Zemke Signs With Michael Jordan Motorsports for 2010 AMA Superbike Championship...and He Won't Be on a Honda!

Having been involved in AMA Road Racing since the late '90s, Jake Zemke has raced Hondas almost exclusively since the early part of the last decade. Racing not only directly for the Team Honda/American Honda factory, but with Bruce Transportation and Erion Racing as well, Jake garnering won the '06 Daytona 200 in the Formula Xtreme class, as well as the '08 AMA Formula Xtreme Championship. From the CBR600RR to the big bore CBR1000RR in the superbike class, Honda has been Jake's weapon of choice for quite some time now.
A dawn of a new era in Jake's road racing career began this week when it was announced that he would be riding a GSXR1000 Suzuki for Michael Jordan Motorsports and it's sponsor The National Guard in the 2010 AMA Superbike Championship. Teaming with multi-time AMA Champ Aaron Yates, the '10 season will look decidedly different for not only Jake but the Michael Jordan team as well. But with big-name sponsor National Guard, and Jake's reputation of bringing it home, it can't but help the overall look of the series after having taken such a serious hit in the off season.
With the loss of direct factory support in the Honda and Kawasaki camps, the retirement of 7-time Superbike Champ Mat Mladin, the loss of a host of riders across the pond to European series and many others that are still searching for rides, the 2010 season will have a very different look. And with the second year of 'the new rules' under the DMG/AMA Road Racing umbrella, not much has changed as a result when it comes to Suzuki's filling out the grid and dominating the class at the top. At times the song DOES remain the same....
With Jake's experience not only in superbike, but in the Formula Xtreme and Supersport classes, the 2010 season just picked up a jump in it's step in regards to rider talent. After running in only the Daytona Sportbike class in the '09 season, this will mark Jake's return to the full liter class after a two year hiatus.
Always one of the guys with the biggest smile on his face, Jake was, before the massive rules changes for the '09 season, the last man to put a superbike on the top of the box other then a Suzuki. Jake won at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah during the '06 season while riding a CBR1000RR for Team Honda to break a stranglehold on the class that the big Suzuki GSXR1000 had held in the premier class for some time. And continued to hold until the end of the '08 season.
This should be an interesting transition year for Jake and for Team Jordan. We wish everyone the best of luck and look forward to seeing them on the box during the upcoming season. You can read the official releases here thanks to Paul Carruthers at http://www.cyclenews.com/ and to John Ulrich and his army of journos over at http://www.roadracingworld.com/. Without their efforts being able to bring you these official releases would be very difficult:
http://roadracingworld.com/news/article/?article=39299
While you are viewing the news of Jake's signing this week, I'll fill you in on Stu's Shots choices for today's post.
Starting from the top is a shot of Jake on the Team Honda CBR1000RR at Barber Motorsports Park during practice for the April '07 round in Leeds, AL. Up next is Jake coming out of the carousel at Road America in '04 during practice for the June '04 round. Jake was riding for Erion Racing on the satellite-based team on a CBR1000RR with sponsorship from Parts Unlimited that year.
We then see a shot of Jake's Team Honda CBR1000RR superbike under the tent in the paddock area during the '06 round at Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI. We then go to another shot of Jake going into turn 14 at Road America while qualifying for the weekend's superbike event in June of '04. Jake was on the Erion Racing Parts Unlimited CBR1000RR this year.
Last but not least is another shot of Jake diving into turn 14 at Road America while riding the big CBR1000RR for Team Honda during one of the superbike practices over the course of the '05 weekend event.
Thanks again for stopping in and we look forward to you coming by to hang out with us again. Take care and have a great rest of the week!

Ben Spies On Top of The World at MMP WSBK While Winning SuperPole #7

For a guy that is supposed to be a 'rookie' in a new series for him, that in
most cases other then this w/e he hasn't even seen the majority of the tracks
he is riding on, Ben Spies is setting the world, let alone the World Superbike Series,
on fire.
Having broken a 17 year old record yesterday in winning 7 SuperPoles in a row, a previous
record held by another Texan and former AMA Superbike Champion as well, Ben stole the
record that was held by Doug Polen when he contested the World Superbike Series in the early
'90s, while winning the championship in '91 and '92 on the Fast by Ferracci Ducati. Yes, for a man that came into a new series this year, on a new team, and on a new and advanced Yamaha R1 motorcycle, Ben is doing his best to show everyone that he is no rookie, and be damned the
hype that you can't win or compete in WSBK on tracks you haven't seen or ridden on previously.
And just to add insult to injury to anyone else who had any doubts, he took this new record yesterday on a track that for once, he had ridden on, let alone seen. And did it while the clouds
were getting ready to open up and shower the track at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah.
And to have broken a record that had stood for 17 years in the now 22 year old series is in itself
quite an accomplishment. Not bad for a 'rookie.'
Both races today at the beautiful MMP in Utah will be a challenge for all entered, and Ben will still have to come out ahead of rival Nitro Nori Haga in order to get back into the championship hunt after a couple of crashes and DNF's due to lack of fuel load and shifter-related problems--both of which occurred as he was either about to win or in the process of leading races. Nitro Nori did suffer a massive get-off yesterday during practice, so he is likely to be a rightfully-so sore today after pounding the MMP pavement from this big highside as made available by the wonderful folks at http://www.superbikeplanet.com/:

http://www.superbikeplanet.com/image/2009/wsbk/miller/haga/

Can you say 'ouch'?

Nonetheless, Nitro may be sore but Ben 'Elbowz' Spies, or The Texas Terror should you have it, will still have his hands full with a field of major stars. Both races will be run today @ 2 P.M. and 5:30 P.M. EDT, and both will be shown tape-delayed on SpeedTV today at 5-7 P.M. EDT as well. And if you are like me, you can follow them both on the net courtesy of the fine folks at the Official World Superbike site here via this link. The live timing is on the right side of the page and pretty easy to spot about 1/3 of the way down:

http://www.worldsbk.com/en/home.html

You can also check out Miller Motorsports Park's website here:

http://www.millermotorsportspark.com/

Finally, the shots above were taken at Road America of Ben leading a various cast of U.S.-based stars from the AMA Superbike Series in June '06 in what was race 2 on Sunday afternoon of the 'old' REAL Superbike Series. On the Team Honda CBR1000RR mounted #17 Miguel Duhamel and #98 Jake Zemke, #22 Tommy Hayden on the ZX-based Team Kawasaki, team mates on the Ducati-factory efforts #100 Neil Hodgson--also a former World Superbike Champion--as well as Ben Bostrom on the #155 and also not only a former multi-time winner on the WSBK scene, but the winner of the '98 AMA Superbike Series, the '08 AMA SuperSport Champion, and this years winner of the AMA Daytona 200. Also to be seen in pic #2 is perennial crowd/fan favorite Aaron 'Yikes' Yates on the Team Yoshimura GSXR-1000, at the time Ben Spies' team mate along with multi-time champ Mat Mladin.

Enjoy the races this weekend, and have a good week. Thanks for coming by to share in the fun
and the speed and the rush that is Stu's Shots R Us! God Bless!

Ben Spies Rolls in Assen to Take World Superbike Superpole #4

As we view some various shots of Ben Spies at Road America in
June of '06--the early part of the year when he won his 1st AMA
Superbike Championship--word comes from across the pond that
Ben Spies not only led all sessions of practice and qualifying this w/e
at Assen, but also managed to take his 4th event Superpole of the year.
And this on a track that before Thursday he had never seen in person.
Great stuff from the Tall Texan who the world is getting to know why he
is called 'Elbows,' as these shots will indeed reinforce. To view the results of
the races in the World Superbike Championship, take a look here:
You can also click on their 'home' page tag to take you to the live timing which
is available during the events of the weekend. The races for Sunday, April 26th
are due to roll off at 0600 EDT and 0930 EDT. Unfortunately, due to licensing
restrictions, the live feed available to other parts of the world are not to us here in
the U.S. But..........they are on tape-delayed on Sunday 4/26 on SpeedTV at 3 and 4
P.M. ET. And for you night owls repeated on Tuesday 4/28 at 0300 and 0400 ET.
So stay tuned as Mr. Spies highlights and shows his talent to the rest of the world for
part 4 of the 14 part World Superbike Series of 2009. You will not be dissapointed in
watching what this very talented young man can do!
The above shots were taken as mentioned at Road America--all of them in turn 14 before or
in mid-corner which leads onto the 3700 foot front stretch in Elkhart Lake, WI. The first two
shots you see Ben leading Miguel Duhamel on the #17 Team Honda CBR1000RR. In the first
shot you will also see multi-time AMA FX Champion Jake Zemke on the #98 Team Honda
CBR1000RR trying to keep them within sight. These two were taken during race 2 on Sunday
afternoon of the weekend. In the other shots, Mr. Elbows is in various forms of practice or qualifying on Friday and Saturday of the w/e event.
So tune in as we see the Tall Texas Elbows Man take on the world again and show them
what the fine state of Texas, as well as the once-fine AMA Road Racing Series has turned out
in the way of talent. Let the pain begin......
