AMA Pro Flat Track: Gerit Callies Looks Set to Return to the Track in the AMA Pro Singles Championship at Daytona

Gerit Callies is seen signing autographs for the fans at round 5 of the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season at the Lima Half-Mile on June 30, during the fan walk festivities at the Allen County Fairgrounds in between the on-track action.

Callies and his #76L Fun Mart Cycles/Rod Lake/Power Brokers/Gillespie-sponsored KTM 450SX-F team had a solid 12-point lead in the 2012 AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Series Championship heading into round 9 of the season at the Peoria TT (having won three events on the season), before being involved in one of the nastiest-looking crashes of the season during the Pro Singles main event.  Due to injuries suffered in that devasting bang-up, the South Dakota resident missed the remaining 11 rounds of the season and slipped to 8th-place in the final year-end tally.

However, great news came out of the Callies' and AMA Pro Flat Track camps yesterday in that he looks to be ready to return to action in next month's season-openers at the Daytona Short Track.

You can check out the press release from Gerit Callies and AMA Pro Flat Track here that talks about Callies' return this season at Daytona in just under three weeks' time.

AMA Flat Track: Gerit Callies Gets KTM Their First Win in the Pro Singles Series at Hagerstown Half-Mile Round 6

Gerit Callies is shown on his #76L Fun Mart Cycles/Rod Lake/Power Brokers/Gillespie-sponsored KTM 450 SX-F during one of the qualifying rounds at round 5 of the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship season at the Allen County Fairgrounds in Lima, OH. on June 30.

Callies took his 3rd win of the season at the Hagerstown Half-Mile round of the season on July 7 after having won round one at Daytona and at the Springfield TT round earlier in the season, but what was even more significant to the current series points leader was he did it this time on his KTM, making the brand the fourth overall winner in the Pro Singles class since the series' inception in the 2009 season.  Callies was listed at Daytona as riding his KTM but actually won on his back-up Honda CRF450R.  This leaves only Kawasaki as the lone brand in the Pro Singles class that hasn't garnered a win yet in AMA Pro Flat Track's feeder series.

The current point leader over Weirbach Racing's Ryan Wells (79-69) after six rounds of the 16-round scheduled season, Callies has been one of the dominant forces in the series the last two seasons, finishing last year in the 3rd-place spot in the championship behind Mikey Martin and Mikey Avilia, and winning three races during the 2011 campaign to boot (Daytona Short Track II, DuQuoin and Castle Rock.)  Of note, after winning the opening round at Daytona the South Dakota resident failed to qualify for round 2, and also failed to qualify for round 4 at the Springfield Mile I event after winning the previous night's outing.

At Lima on June 30 as shown above, Callies finished with a solid 12th-place effort on his KTM, making him three-for-four on the 2012 season in terms of wins.  Zakk Palmer (Lima), Ryan Wells (Daytona Short Track II) and Jake Cunningham (Springfield Mile I) are the other winners at this point in the series' season.

You can check out the press release below from AMA Pro Flat Track, and be sure to keep an eye on Gerit Callies and his KTM for the rest of the season as he looks to nail down his first AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship while battling the other young guns in the Pro Singles class.

(Please note-the press release below lists Callies as the 2011 winner at Hagerstown, but that round was actually won by eventual series champion Mikey Martin, with Callies placing in the runner-up spot.)

Callies Repeats at Hagerstown Speedway in AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles

AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles

Michigan's Steven Vanderkuur (Parkinson Brothers Racing / Performance Cycle & Dyno) nailed the hole shot in the 16-lap AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles main over last year's winner Gerit Callies (Fun Mart Cycles) and Weirbach Racing's Ryan Wells. The Michigan cushion specialist looked to have the wide red groove dialed in only to have the red lights flash on at the end of the third lap. Danny Koelsch (Hump Racing) and Jamison Minor (Rochester Motorsports) tangled in turn two with only Koelsch making the restart.

The race complexion changed completely on the restart as Callies pushed his KTM under Vanderkuur's Honda and into the lead he would not relinquish. "Restarts will kill you but my team put together a great bike and really gave me a great chance to win," Callies said. "I can't thank my team enough."

Fast qualifier, Adam Bushman (Midwest CNC / Powerbar Honda) took full advantage of the restart to climb into second and closed to within four tenths of a second of the leader, but that is where his charge finished.

Wells finished third over Highs Dairy Stores Jason Isennock and Vanderkuur. Jake Shoemaker (Montgomeryville Cycle / Bob Weirbach), Eric Stump (Markbilt Race Bikes / Eyeball), Wyatt Maguire (Kirkland Racing), Jake Quick (Markertech) and Shayna Texter (DFW Honda) rounded out the top 10.

Callies now leads the Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles points chase by 10 over Wells with Isennock another 10 back.

AMA Flat Track: Today's Cycle Coverage Reviews the Daytona Season-Opening Pro Singles Round

Gerit Callies rolls it on coming out of turn 5 at the Peoria TT on his #76L Twenty Six Suspension/G2 Ergonomics/Vortex Sprockets/O'Neal-sponsored Honda CRF450R during practice for round 14 of the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season on August 21.  Callies would go on to qualify 2nd on the day at the amphitheatre-setting track in the AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship round, and would end the day in the same spot-2nd place-in the Pro Singles main event behind 'declared' winner Mikey Avila.

The South Dakota resident ended the 2011 season ranked as the 3rd rider in the Pro Singles Championship, behind '11 Champ Mikey Martin and runner-up Mikey Avilia.  Callies won three rounds on the season (Daytona II, DuQuoin and Castle Rock) and if not for missing both Springfield Mile rounds would have finished much higher in the year-ending points.  If you consider each round pays 23 points to win, and Callies finished 25 points behind Martin and 17 behind Avilia, he very well could have been the one carrying away the #1 plate at the end of last season.  Both Martin and Avilia ran and finished in all 20 events last season.

Callies started the season out right where he left off, however, after winning round 1 and missing the field in round 2, he currently sits 3rd in the 2012 AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship with 24 points, tied with Weirbach Racing's new young sensation Ryan Wells (who won round 2 after not qualifying for round 1) and just 11 points behind early-season leader Hayden Gillim.

This could be Callies year after finishing so strong last season, but as always the cream is thick in the Pro Singles Championship Series with a handful of great young riders working their way up the ranks.  With Wells, Gillim and Callies starting the season out in the top 3, there is no reason to think that these same three men won't be fighting it out throughout the year right down to the last round at Pomona in October.  Stay tuned!

Today's Cycle Coverage.com has a nice review that you can read below of round 1 of the 2012 season below that you can check out to help you make it through the. next 39 days until round 3 at the Springfield TT on May 26.

Thanks to Today's Cycle Coverage.com's Dan Jacobson, Sr. for this review of round 1 of the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles season at the Daytona Short Track.

Also featured in this review are some great shots of the action at the Daytona season-opener taken by the superb couple of Brent and Stephanie Pierce of BTP Photography out of the Lima, OH. area.  Even if you don't recognize Brent's name, you've probably seen a lot of his great work in the Lima Half-Mile programs for the last few years, as well as in some of the event flyers that the IMDA mails out each year for the Springfield Mile, TT and Short Track rounds.  Next time you check those out, look for Brent and his lovely wife Stephanie in the photo credits!

AMA Flat Track: Mikey Martin, 2011 AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Flat Track Champion

Three of the top 7 contenders for the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship get ready to roll out for the first practice session of the day during round 7 of the 2011 Pro Singles Series events at the Springfield TT on May 30.  Two of these three men would not only end the day on the podium, but would fight it out to the end of the season for the 2011 Pro Singles Championship.

Mikey Avila on the #33E SDI Insulation/M.E.H. Corp/Boughner Racing/Arai-sponsored Honda CRF450R adjusts his helmet prior to heading out for the first of two practice sessions at the Springfield Rodeo/Multipurpose Arena.  Avila would be the champ at the end of the day by just .290 seconds over season-ending champ, Mikey Martin, but Martin would end up winning the war at season's end.  Avila did win six events on the year (to Martin, Briar Bauman's and Gerit Callies three wins each), but his overall results came in just eight points shy of taking the title over Martin.  Avila would end the season with nine top 5s and nine podiums in the Pro Singles Championship, and looks to join Martin and Callies for the 2012 season in the Expert Grand National ranks.

Martin's #91Y Weirbach Racing Honda was virtually flawless all season, and for the most part his and the Iowa-based Weirbach Racing team seemed to only suffer two hiccups throughout the season that were, or could have been substantial.  Just before the previous day's events for the Springfield Mile I round, the team's transporter was partially destroyed by a fire in the parking lot of the hotel where they were staying.  When they showed up later that morning for the rain-delayed event, the team's bikes were discolored from the heat, smelled of heavy smoke and had to be patched together in order to even make it on the track.  Like strong teams do, and with the AMA Flat Track family helping out, they overcame the devastating losses incurred to come back and finish 2nd on the mile and the TT for the weekend.

That could have been the turning point that would have lost the championship to lesser teams and riders, but they endured and went on to take the lion's share of the payouts when the season wrapped.  At the penultimate round of the season, Martin's Honda blew up during the final, but fortunately for he and the Weirbach team, was able to re-start on his back-up machine since it happened before the five laps-in mark.  Martin came home in the 8th spot (his second-worst finish of the year after his 10th at Lima) in another instance of overcoming near-defeat on what ended up being his championship season.  Bravo to Mikey and the Weirbach team for getting it done!

And the man who finished 7th in the 2011 Pro Singles Championship, William Cato on the #35C Shoe Racing/Sportland Motorsports Urbana, IL/Bob Berry Racing/Woody Kyle Racing-sponsored Honda, also took home a win during the season at the Salinas TT.  Cato missed seven events on the year which caused him to drop in the season-ending standings.  He also finished 2nd at the Springfield Short Track over Labor Day Weekend, and should be a strong contender for the 2012 AMA Pro Singles Championship.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mikey Martin gets introduced to the crowd after winning the I-96 Speedway Half-Mile round of the 2011 AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles main event at the Lake Odessa, MI. facility on July 23.  Martin had just taken his second win of the season (by just over four seconds to runner-up Conner Anderson) and took his third-in-a-row on the Sacramento Mile the next weekend.  Martin's win at the Lake Odessa round would vault him into the lead of the championship just past the half-way point of the season, a lead he would never surrender throughout the final nine rounds of the year.

The #91Y Weirbach Racing/General Engineering/Barnett Clutches/Spectro Oils-sponsored and Honda CRF450R-mounted rider had a stellar year in being only one of two men contesting the Pro Singles Series to qualify for all 20 events (runner-up Mikey Avila being the second man.)  Martin not only won three events on the season (Hagerstown being the other win for the California rider), but also scored eight podiums and 14 top-5s on the season in route to being the 3rd AMA Pro Singles Champion since the series' inception in 2009.

Martin will join previous AMA Pro Singles Flat Track Champions Brad Baker and Jeffrey Carver, Jr. for the 2012 AMA Grand National Championship Series season when he moves up to the Expert ranks while wearing his new #91 Expert number plate.

Hats and helmets off to the Ottumwa, IA.-based Weirbach Honda Racing team and 2011 Pro Singles Champion Mikey Martin.  A very well deserved year, that saw them fight through and overcome adversity on their championship winning season!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gerit Callies is shown during practice for round 15 of the 2011 AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship Series season at the Peoria TT on August 21.  Callies would end the day in the runner-up position after Mikey Avila was declared the winner due to Briar Bauman's DQ (see below.)

The #76L Twenty Six Suspension/G2 Ergonomics/Vortex Sprockets/O'Neal-backed Honda CRF450R-mounted rider would end the season as the 3rd ranked rider in the year's standings, after winning three rounds on the year (Daytona Short Track II, DuQuoin, Castle Rock) and would finish the season 25 points down on Martin and 17 down on Avila (316-308-291.)

Look for Callies to move up in the ranks to Expert status for the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship Series season after running the final round of the 2011 season under a provisional for Pro Singles riders, where he made the main at Pomona on the Waters Auto Body KTM and finished the night in the 16th spot.  Super job Gerit!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Briar Bauman all but spoiled the latter part of the 2011 Pro Singles Championship Series for the rest of the contenders.  Turning pro mid-season, the Salinas, CA. resident then burst onto the scene to take what would have been four wins on the year.  However, due to a fuel test that was bad after the Peoria TT, he was disqualifed and the win was given to Mikey Avila after all of the podium ceremonies had passed and the paying crowd had left the house.

Returning to action above on his #10Z Rod Lake Racing/Browns Cycle/Lazer Racing/Gene & Gail Cummings-sponsored Honda CRF450R, the 'rookie' and former AMA Horizon Award winner would go on to get that first win two weeks later at the Springfield Short Track on September 3 over William Cato and 3rd place finisher Callies.

Bauman went on to win the last two rounds of the season at Calistoga and Pomona, and put in an inspiring ride to second place behind first-time winner Shayna Texter at the Knoxville round, to finish the season ranked as the 6th place man in the Pro Singles Championship.  Contesting only eight rounds in the season, he wrapped the season with those three wins, two 2nd-place finishes and one 3rd-place finish at the Springfield Mile II round.  If you throw out his DQ from Peoria, his worst finish in seven rounds was a 4th place finish at the Sacramento Mile, his very first Pro event.

Talk is he could be moving up to the Expert ranks to join the big show in 2012, and if so, the competition has some work to do to keep this kid off the box.  Great job BB!

AMA Flat Track: Motorcycle-Superstore.com AMA Pro Singles Championship to Be Decided at Pomona

Gerit Callies on the #76L Twenty Six Suspension/G2 Ergonomics/Vortex Sprockets/O'Neal-sponsored Honda CRF450R works the low line during practice for round 14 of the 2011 Motorcycle-Superstore.com AMA Pro Singles Grand National Championship Series at the Peoria TT on August 21.  Series points leader Mikey Martin on his #91Y Weirbach Racing Honda holds true to his line while the duo sprints out of turn 5 in the run to the stripe at the home of the Peoria Motorcycle Club.

Callies would go on to out-qualify Martin, 26.214 to 26.348 for 2nd and 3rd qualifying spots behind fast qualifier Briar Bauman at 26.093 seconds, and would take 2nd in the Pro Singles main event behind declared winner Mikey Avila, after Briar Bauman was disqualified for a fuel test oversight.  Martin would finish the day in the 5th spot.  The two contenders for the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Pro Singles Championship both have three wins on the year.

With the final battle to the championship to be decided at the Pomona round this Saturday, the run to the end should surely be exciting, just as the year behind us has been.

A big thanks goes out to AMA Pro Flat Track and Motorcycle-Superstore.com for putting on some great racing this year and for putting up the championship points fund to the tune of $25K.  Motorcycle-Superstore.com hit it out of the park in the 2011 season, their second as the title sponsorship of the AMA Pro Singles Series.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mikey Martin displays his check for winning round 11 of the 2011 Motorcycle-Superstore.com AMA Pro Singles Grand National Championship Series event at the Lake Odessa round in late July.  The series points leader took his #91Y Weirbach Racing/General Engineering/Barnett Clutches/Spectro-sponsored Honda CRF450R to the win over runner-up Conner Anderson (being interviewed by AMA Pro Flat Track official announcer Barry Boone) and 3rd place finisher Jake Shoemaker (far right.)  Martin took charge after early leader Mikey Avila suffered a mechanical, and went on to win by 4.322 seconds over Anderson, for what was at the time his second win of the season.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With two laps to go in round 16 action of the 2011 Motorcycle-Superstore.com AMA Pro Singles Grand National Championship Series event at the Springfield Mile II in early September, Jake Shoemaker on his #55A Scott Powersports/REV-IT/Roy Miller Engines/Penske Suspension-sponsored Honda CRF450R makes an outside move on Zakk Palmer (partially hidden) on the #81C Western Hills Honda/Rick Soucie/TLC Racing/Angie Beighle-sponsored Honda, which he would duplicate at the checkers to take the win for the day.  Hot on their heels are eventual 3rd place finisher Briar Bauman on his #10Z Honda, and eventual 4th place finisher Shayna Texter on her #25A RLT Racing/Lancaster H-D/Herr's/Invisible Glass-sponsored Honda.  Palmer crossed the stripe just .002 seconds behind winner Shoemaker, with Bauman another .008 back and Texter just .016 seconds behind Bauman.

Heading to Pomona, Palmer sits in the 11th spot in the Pro Singles Championship (95 points) with two wins (he only ran a partial schedule this season) and Shayna Texter has worked her way into the 8th spot of the standings (116 points.)  Texter became the first woman to win an AMA Pro Flat Track event in mid September by beating Briar Bauman in a come-from-behind race that saw her chase down early leader Bauman to win the Knoxville Half-Mile round.  Very impressive indeed and a well earned victory for one of The First Ladies of AMA Pro Flat Track!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Third place finisher Briar Bauman is interviewed on the podium at the Springfield Mile II on September 4, while winner Jake Shoemaker and runner-up Zakk Palmer discuss their day with Miss AMA Pro Flat Track, Jenn Lewis.  Round 16 of the 2011 Motorcycle-Superstore.com AMA Pro Singles Grand National Championship Series saw the three finish within .010 seconds of one another after the 12 lap Pro Singles main event.

Shoemaker sits in the 4th spot of the Pro Singles Championship heading to Pomona with 158 points, six up on 5th place man Jason Isennock.  William Cato lies in the 6th spot with 133 points.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mikey Avila on the #33E SDI Insulation/MEH Corp/Boughner Racing/Arai-sponsored Honda CRF450R leads Briar Bauman on the #10Z Rod Lake Racing/Browns Cycles/Lazer Racing/Gene & Gail Cummings-sponsored Honda during the AMA Pro Flat Track Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles main event at the Peoria TT on August 21, 2011.  Bauman got the best of Avila on the track, but was DQed after a bad fuel test, relegating Avila to the top spot for the day, and his 5th win (of 6 total) of the season.  Avila leads the series in wins going into the last round of the season at the Pomona Fairplex on Saturday, October 15, but sits in the 2nd spot in the championship, 14 points behind series points leader Mikey Martin, 303-289 points.

Bauman turned pro just past the mid-point of the season at the Sacramento round, and is quickly showing the world that there is still a hot-bed of racers coming out of the Salinas, CA. area (think Doug Chandler and the late Ricky Graham to name just two!) and has gone on to win two events since his unfortunate disqualification at Peoria in late August.  The former Horizon Award winner should be a force to be reckoned with come the 2012 season, as in his short time in the series he has worked his way into the 7th spot of the championship (118 points.)

Gerit Callies Tops the AMA Pro Flat Track Motorcycle Superstore.com Pro Singles Final at the DuQuoin Indoor Short Track

Gerit Callies took his #76L Full Throttle/Gillespie Small Engine.com-sponsored Honda CRF450R to his second win of the 2011 season in the AMA Pro Flat Track Motorcycle Superstore.com Pro Singles event inside the bullring at the Southern Illinois Center in DuQuoin, IL. last Saturday.  In winning his heat and the 20 lap final, Callies bested a 48 rider turn-out, of which 32 qualified for the Four Rivers H-D sponsored race.
Callies added to his 2nd/1st place finishes from the season opener at Daytona to take a 14 point lead in the Pro Singles standings heading to rounds 4 and 5 at the Salinas Sports Complex this weekend in California.  The young man is off to a great start after placing 13th in the overall standings in the 2010 Pro Singles Championship.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hayden Gillim, Gerit Callies and Jason Isennock gather up their hardware after the podium celebrations in the Pro Singles Series at DuQuoin after celebrating their 2/1/3 finishes after the 20 lap Pro Singles Main event.  After the DuQuoin round, Gillim sits 4th in the Pro Singles Championship with 39 points, Callies leads with 67 points, and Isennock is in 5th place with 33 points, with 18 more rounds scheduled for the 2011 season.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Heat race action inside the Southern Illinois Center at DuQuoin, IL. shows William Cato leading on his #35C Shoe Racing/Sportland Motorsports-backed Honda CRF450R over #91Y Mikey Martin on his Weirbach Racing/General Engineering-sponsored Honda CRF450R.  Following are #69C Hayden Gillim on his Bell Helmets/34 Racing-backed Honda CRF450R and #55A Jake Shoemaker on his Scott Powersports/Penske Suspension-sponsored Suzuki RMZ450.  They would finish 1,2,3,4 in the second Pro Singles heat.  Cato led part of the final before sliding out and remounting to finish 14th, Martin would finish 4th in the final, Gillim 3rd and Shoemaker in 8th place.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After only qualifying for two events in the 2010 AMA Pro Flat Track Motorcycle Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship, Jason Isennock is starting off the 2011 season with a pretty big bang.  Riding what was reportedly a stock Suzuki RMZ450, the #30S Ellicottcity Motorsports/Foard Racing-sponsored rider is sitting in the 5th position in the 2011 Pro Singles Championship.  Jason kept eventual winner Callies honest in the final at DuQuoin, following him closely home but just coming up .404 seconds back after 20 hard fought laps.  He is supposedly been looking for a ride for the Salinas doubleheader this weekend, and with this young man's talent it would be a shame NOT to see him get one!
