In what has to be one of THE most exciting classes to be watching in road racing around the world this year is the new Moto2 class brought in by Dorna/MotoGP to replace the 250CC two-stroke class at the beginning of the 2010 season.
With grids of AT LEAST 38-39 riders, and many events having 40, the time differentials in practice and qualifying at these events has been extremely close. And the racing has been superb in a class that when you factor in control Dunlop tires and spec fuel, Honda-provided 600CC-based production motors that are sealed by Dorna for 'no touch' purposes, the teams are forced to rely on chassis and suspension development, electronics, and ultimately a good rider.
The Fimmco Speed Up Team of Andrea Iannone on the #29 machine put it on the pole today at Aragon, Spain with a time of 1:55.148, leading a group of 19 other riders that all qualified within one second of the pole speed. 20th place in qualifying was the #12 Interwetten Moriwaki Moto2-mounted Thomas Luthi at 1:56.124, just .976 seconds behind Iannone. Amazing! And Iannone's team mate Gabor Talmacsi also qualified in the top 10 with a fine run to 7th with a time of 1:55.627 on the #2 bike.
