The first mile event of the season in the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles Grand National Championship from the Sacramento Mile is in the bag as the stars of The Rolling Thunder Show get ready to saddle up on their Singles Series machines this weekend at the Castle Rock TT.

AMA Pro Flat Track has put together a nice review of round 5 at the Sacto Mile, including some nice videos and interviews with the winners and podium finishers, and the links to the live PPV extravaganza that was seen by thousands last Saturday night.

In the shot above from the running of the Springfield Mile I on May 27, 2012, riders get ready to head out for heat action for the annual Memorial Day Weekend running at the Illinois State Fairgrounds mile oval.

(L-R) Johnny Lewis on the #10 Scott Powersports Kawasaki, Jeffrey Carver, Jr. on the #23 Kiesow Racing H-D XR750, Bryan Smith on the #42 Howerton Motorsports Kawi, Brad Baker on the #12 Kenny Tolbert Racing Kawi, and Jake Johnson on the #1 Zanotti Racing XR are set for battle at the arena of speed in Springfield.

So sit back, check out the videos and interviews and get ready for what will surely be another great event this Saturday, August 3 at the Castle Rock TT, round 6 of the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles Grand National Championship season.

AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles Round 5 Recap - Sacramento Mile

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (July 31, 2013) - Since the Sacramento Mile's return to AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles annual calendar in 2011, two things have remained consistent - the intensity that the Northern California crowd brings to every race and the pure domination of the mile-long track by Flint, Michigan's Bryan Smith (Crosley Radio/Kawasaki EX650) as he has claimed victory in each of the three races held at the Cal Expo.

"Everything went great for me all day," said Smith following his third consecutive Sacramento Mile main event victory. "I really wanted to get away from the pack and win this thing by a long way. I had it going my way early on but my tire got hot and I started to fade back and eventually got pushed off the groove and found myself in a battle. Baker and the rest of the guys really gave me a good run and I knew it would be hard getting around those Harley's but luckily my Crosley Kawasaki was good on the straightaways and I was able to get by them one final time."

In 2011, AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles returned to Sacramento after a 12-year absence from the venue. Before last weekend, Scott Parker, a nine-time Grand National Champion and AMA Pro Hall of Famer, was the only rider in the history of the sport to win three straight Grand National Expert main events at the Cal Expo in its long history with the series dating all the way back to 1959. Parker's string of three straight wins came between the years of 1996-1998 en route to a 94-win career.  Already one of the most prestigious events on the schedule for AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles every year, the stakes were higher on this go around as a number of flat track enthusiasts and industry supporters chipped in to offer an additional $13,500 in bonus payouts to the riders for their efforts, bringing the total to $67,000.

Though Smith is the reigning triple champ at the Sacramento Mile, those victories didn't come easy. In 2011 he won by a mere .042 seconds. Last year, No. 42 claimed victory by an even smaller margin at .037 seconds. This time around, Smith managed to cross the line .083 seconds over second-place finisher and defending Grand National Champion Jared Mees. Don't let the added breathing room for Smith fool you as the racing was as intense as ever all the way down to the final lap.

Smith got off to a fast start. He won his heat race and the Dash for Cash and the 30-year-old looked to be on his way to another victory after getting the holeshot off the pole in Saturday night's main event. Everything was going great for Smith until lap 14 when he slid off the groove on turn two and found himself in a dogfight the rest of the way to the checkered flag.  Once Smith slipped, it was like blood in the water for several of the premier riders of the sport as they all seemed to pounce on the opportunity and within less than a lap there were five riders under a second off the lead.

Eatonville, Washington's Brad Baker (Dodge Bros Racing/Harley-Davidson) was the first to capitalize on Smith's mistake as he quickly stole the lead but forfeited it almost immediately to Jared Mees (Rogers Racing/Harley-Davidson) on the very next lap. Mees went on to lead several laps but the distance separating the Honey Brook, Pennsylvania native and the rest of the pack was so slight that it hardly made a difference who was in first.  With the race hanging in the balance and Smith's impressive streak at Sacramento on the line, he slammed the throttle on the final back stretch just a little harder than his opponents and held on for the victory. The win was Smith's first of the year and propelled him into third in the overall Grand National Championship point standings.

There were four other riders who were all within less than a second of Smith as he crossed the finish line for the final time; Mees, Oxford, Pennsylvania's Brandon Robinson (TJ Burnett Farms/Kawasaki) who closed out the podium with a third-place finish, Brad Baker, and Graham, Washington's Sammy Halbert (Flat Tack Live/Harley-Davidson) who rounded out the top five, respectively.

AMA Pro J&P Cycles Pro Singles

As pressure packed as the Expert Twins race was to cap off a stellar night of racing, the AMA Pro J&P Cycles Pro Singles race set the tone with an even bigger nail biting finish. Shayna Texter (Crosley Radio/Honda) defended her 2012 Sacramento Mile victory with a win in dramatic fashion, taking her first 2013 win. The Willow Street, Pennsylvania native was neck-and-neck with Lodi, California's Nate Wait (Stockton Honda-Yamaha/Honda) for the majority of the race. Wait actually took the lead on a few occasions and looked as if he might pull off the upset. In the end, it was Texter who pushed back on turn four of the final lap to seal the victory and raise herself to fourth in the point standings.  "It was a great race," said Texter. "I was definitely forced to work a whole lot harder this year than I did last year that's for sure. Coming from behind is always tough but it was a good clean race and I'm just so happy right now. I have to thank the fans for supporting me, these west coast fans are one of a kind. I always have to thank my family back home on the east coast, I wouldn't be where I am today without them. I also have to thank my team and my sponsors for allowing me this opportunity."

The win marked Texter's second in as many years at the Sacramento Mile and her fifth career victory as a professional. Texter notched three wins in 2012 and looks poised to compete with even more impressive results this year.

Davison, Michigan's Stephen Vanderkuur (Parkinson Brothers Racing/Honda) put together his most impressive performance of the season, finishing third. Vanderkuur, the defending J&P Cycles Pro Singles champion has struggled at times in 2013 and hopes that his podium finish will be the boost he needs to get back to his championship-caliber self.

AMA Pro Flat Track: Weirbach Racing's Rob Pearson Files His Sacramento Mile Race Report

Rob Pearson and the #27 Weirbach Racing team had a strong result last weekend at round 5 of the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles Grand National Championship season at the Sacramento Mile.

Parking the team's Harley-Davidson XR750 for the evening, they brought out their potent Suzuki SV650 for the evening's events, where 'Bugs' was able to bring the Iowa-based team an 8th-place finish for their efforts for the day at the Cal Expo Fairgrounds-hosted event.

In the shot above, Pearson is shown on his #27 American H-D/Matt Reecy Racing-sponsored XR750 at the Lake Odessa, MI. round of the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship season at the I-96 Speedway, heading out for the day's first practice session along with Bryan Smith on his #42 Moroney's Fasthog.com XR and Sammy Halbert on his #7 Kings Kustoms XR.

Pearson and the Weirbach Racing team released their Sacramento race report today, which you can check out below.

A big congrats to Rob and the team for a solid effort last weekend, and you can check them out next as they head to the Pacific Northwest to contest round 6 of the season at the Castle Rock TT this Saturday, August 3.

July 27, 2013 the Sacramento Mile

We made it to Sacramento Friday after racing in Champaign, IL Wednesday night during the fair and that was a long drive in 2 days.

We had a good night Wednesday at the cushion half mile in Champaign bringing home second to Sammy Halbert.

Sacramento started out like usual, a light cushion until eventually taking rubber and grooving up around the bottom.  Qualifying didn't go as planned, after being around 8th overall the first 2 sessions, during the last session the track was prepped after our group and made for way faster times.  This put us 21st overall and gave me a 2nd row start in heat 3.

Rob Pearson is shown on the #27 Weirbach Racing/KDM Forest Products/Michael King/General Engineering-sponsored Suzuki SV650 during action at round 5 of the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles Grand National Championship season at the Sacramento Mile on July 27.  Photo courtesy of Weirbach Racing, by Ken Kerr/KerrGraphix.com.

Fortunately the Weirbach Racing SV650 got off the line great and I made it from the 2nd row to take a 2nd-place finish in the heat. Our heat race finish was good enough to get a spot in the Dash for Cash where we finished 5th.

I got a decent start in the main event and ran as high as 6th, battling for most of the race with Jake Johnson and Kenny Coolbeth.  I didn't save any tire for the end of the race and eventually had to settle for an 8th place finish.

We ended up having a pretty good day after qualifying as far back as we did.

Now we are getting ready for Castle Rock, WA. this weekend and I'm ready to get back on the Honda and put it on the podium.

Hope to see you at the races.

Geico Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing Previews Round 6 of the AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport Series as it Heads to Miller Motorsports Park

AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport Preview Miller Motorsports Park

TOOELE, Utah (July 31, 2013) - This weekend's AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport doubleheader at Miller Motorsports Park should be another exciting affair. Coming off a terrific three-way fight for the win at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca two weeks ago, the series for up-and-coming racers and fast club aces has built momentum all season long with five different winners in 2013. The wide-open circuit in Tooele, Utah should make for a close weekend of competition.

Tomas Puerta on the #12 RoadRace Factory Yamaha YZF-R6 and Joe Roberts on the #2 California Superbike School Honda CBR600RR lead the field off the line during the running of round 5 of the AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport Series race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on Sunday, July 21.  The series head to Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, UT. for round 6 this coming weekend.  AMA Pro Road Racing photo by Brian J. Nelson.

Joe Roberts (No. 2 California Superbike School Roadracingworld.com Honda CBR600RR) returns for another AMA Pro event in Utah. The 16-year old has been perfect in his three races, but it wasn't easy in California. Roberts was able to get his third straight win to start his AMA Pro career but it took a last-lap pass to get it done. Roberts was able to earn a gap at Barber Motorsports Park in his debut AMA Pro event, but the contest at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca showed his rivals were ready for him this time out. Unlike Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Roberts has ridden at Miller Motorsports Park before.  For Roberts, a Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup participant, the Miller round will be the last time he gets to race with AMA Pro this season. He has a chance to continue his unprecedented GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing debut streak and build momentum towards the next step in what will surely be a long and illustrious career.

West points leader Tomas Puerta (No. 12 Roadrace Factory Yamaha YZF-R6) was the rider who came up just short in challenging Roberts for the win at the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix. Puerta made a move in the last corner and showed aggression on the last lap, but came up just 0.177 short of the win. Still, it was a big weekend for Puerta who pulled further away in the points. He now leads by 45 and is in fine shape to take his first AMA Pro title with two events to go.  Puerta is a veteran of the series and the Colombian has often shown flashes of brilliance since the class began in 2009, but this season has seen a steep rise in his competitiveness. Even when he hasn't been the victor, he's been a factor at the front in every race. In the West contests, Puerta has finished fifth or better in every race, with three podiums in five finals. Add in a win at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and two podiums at Barber Motorsports Park and it makes for a fine season for the Colombian. Puerta could the clinch the Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport West Championship this weekend should everything fall his way.

His counterpart Corey Alexander (No. 5 National Guard Celtic Racing Suzuki GSX-R600) leads the East division. Alexander was in fine form at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, fighting for the win with Roberts and Puerta and finishing just 0.294 short of the win. Alexander has bounced back from some struggles after his blockbuster Road America double victory. His five podium results are proof that he has improved dramatically in 2013 and it appears he's fast and focused. Alexander also has a win in Utah to his credit, having won in 2011.  Alexander is also at the top of the Roadracing World Young Gun of the Year Award standings with 191 points over Stefano Mesa's 168 tallies. The newly-named award will provide a $2,500 cash bonus to the top young, rising star in GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing. To be eligible for the award, riders must have been no older than 18 at the start of the 2013 GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing season. The award will go to the eligible rider with the most overall points in either the Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport or GoPro Daytona SportBike classes and a check will be presented during the 2013 GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing Awards Banquet.

Hayden Gillim (No. 69 Team 95 Yamaha YZF-R6) also has a win at Miller Motorsports Park, and he's one of the men challenging Alexander for the East points lead. The Kentuckian found his form of late. Gillim won his last race at Mid-Ohio and finished second twice before that, setting up a showdown at New Jersey Motorsports Park with Alexander and Mesa. Last year, Gillim showed fantastic form in his runaway win in Utah and this weekend will provide him with another shot at young hotshot Roberts.  Stefano Mesa (No. 37 Motosport.com RSRacecraft Yamaha YZF-R6) has a chance at the title but the fast Colombian needs to reverse a few trends of late. After winning at the season opener in Daytona, Mesa has not only been shut out of the win column, he hasn't made his normal runs at the front in the last few races. Since this weekend won't count for him in the points, it's a good one to fine-tune his game for New Jersey and really go for it.  Miles Thornton (No. 72 CTR Racing Yamaha YZF-R6) is a rider who has that momentum. Thornton won pole at Mid-Ohio and followed up a front row start and two fifth-place results at Barber Motorsport Park, with twin third places at Mid-Ohio. Thornton is yet to win in Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport but looks to be getting closer with each race.  Jeffrey Tigert (No. 91 Baby Appleseed CM Motorsports Yamaha YZF-R6) is second in West points and the veteran has notched a strong campaign in 2013. After problems in Race 1 at Daytona International Speedway, Tigert has finished in the top five in each West round since.

Some other young riders will be in action in Utah, including Conner Blevins (No. 33 Akax Kawasaki ZX-6R), Wyatt Farris (No. 9 Meen Motorsports Yamaha YZF-R6), CJ Weaver (No. 13 BP Racing Yamaha YZF-R6), and Ryan Matter (No. 122 Gearzy Yamaha YZF-R6).

In total, 42 riders have pre-entered for the event and it is shaping up to be another good one. With five different winners in 2012, what happens next is anyone's guess.

AMA Pro Flat Track: Sacramento Mile Round 5 Wrap Up From Circle Bell Motorsports, Cycle News & Next Moto Champion

Round 5 of the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles Grand National Championship at the Sacramento Mile on July 27 was a rousing success by anyone's standards, with a full house on-hand to pack the grandstands and a live viewing audience able to watch from home thanks to all of the efforts of those involved.

With Bryan Smith again taking the win for his third-in-a-row on the #42 Crosley Radio/Howerton Motorsports Kawasaki, the battle for the top rung on the ladder in mile racing picked up where it left off at the end of the 2012 season, even with the addition of the minimum weight to all of the Twins Series machines and the extra millimeter in restrictor given back to the Harley-Davidson XR750 competitors.

With his win at Sacramento, Flyin' Bryan not only took his second straight win at Sacto for his Howerton Kawasaki team, after winning the 2011 event while riding his Moroney's Fasthog.com XR, but took his fourth overall win at the facility after winning back in the 2003 season.

In the shot above from round 13 of the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship season, riders get ready to head out for the first practice session of the day at the Springfield Mile II on September 16.

(L-R)  Brad Baker on the #12 Dodge Brothers Racing XR750, Sammy Halbert on his #7 South East H-D/Kings Kustoms XR, Bryan Smith on the #42 Crosley Radio/Howerton Motorsports Kawi, Henry Wiles on the #17 Lloyd Brothers Motorsports/Ramspur Winery Ducati, Jared Mees on the #9 Rogers Racing/Blue Springs H-D XR, Jake Johnson on the #1 Zanotti Racing/Schaeffer's H-D XR, and Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. on the #2 Screamin' Eagle/Harley-Davidson Motor Company factory XR750 all get ready to test the track after what was a two-week delay in getting what is usually the annual Labor Day weekend race-athon in the bag.

Helping to wrap-up this last weekend's events at the Cal Expo Fairgrounds, Cory Texter, writing for Next Moto Champion.com, put together this great overview of the day's activities at Sacramento.

And Dave Hoenig covered the event for Cycle News and put in this race report from the left coast.

And again a big thanks to Circle Bell Motorsports and the Bob Bellino-led group of folks for not only putting on a great show at the Sacramento Mile, but to AMA Pro Flat Track and Will Fulford from The Fast and Dirty.com for bringing us what was excellent live streaming coverage of the races last Saturday night.  For a first-time effort, you should be applauded and take a bow for the wonderful coverage that you were able to bring us fans who weren't able to make the trek west.  You can view the 25-lap Grand National main as it went down here to see some of the best racers on the planet racing in The Rolling Thunder Show in another super event.

And finally, the Circle Bell Motorsports group have provided us with a nice wrap-up from last Saturday night's races, which you can check out below.

The series heads to the Castle Rock TT this coming Saturday, August 3 for round 6 of the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles Grand National Championship season.

Geico Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing Previews AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike Series Round 6 Heading into Miller Motorsports Park

AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike Round 6 Preview Miller Motorsports Park

TOOELE, Utah (July 30, 2013) - The Miller Motorsports Park round is always a favorite for the GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing field, in large part because the open, flowing layout is a real rider's track. For the AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike field, the doubleheader races will be a chance to compete on a different kind of circuit from the ones of the past few events. Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Mid-Ohio, and Barber are all tighter, more technical, and have a quicker lap than the 15-turn, 3.06-mile course situated just west of Salt Lake City.

Cameron Beaubier (No. 6 Yamaha Extended Service/Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha YZF-R6) could have a weekend that impacts the record books. After winning seven of eight GoPro Daytona SportBike contests so far in 2013, Beaubier could tie the class mark for wins in a season in Utah. Martin Cardenas, currently Yoshimura Suzuki's star SuperBike ace, won nine races in his championship-winning 2010 season.  With one victory, Beaubier can also break his tie with Josh Herrin for second on the all-time wins list. Herrin and Beaubier with 14 wins trail all-time winner Cardenas and his 24 GoPro Daytona SportBike victories.  Beaubier has dominated the year like few have in GoPro Daytona SportBike, continuously working his strategy for settling in during the early laps, then making a calculated run to the front followed by a late race push to shake anyone who might be left. After winning seven races last year, Beaubier has matched that total with New Jersey Motorsports Park and the second Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca event still to follow Miller.  Beaubier was in top form at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and changed his approach to deal with a late red flag that created a five-lap shootout. Beaubier showed he can get a good start off the line and push hard from the start if necessary.  Beaubier and the entire field will be going for their first GoPro Daytona SportBike victory at Miller Motorsports Park as riders not currently in the class have won the previous DSB contests.

Jake Gagne (No. 32 RoadRace Factory Yamaha YZF-R6) is second in points, trailing Beaubier by 56 points and a solid 36 points clear of third place. For Gagne, the rest of the season is about beating the Graves machines, as he stated at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca earlier this month. The Californian has had a fantastic season, but Beaubier's excellence has relegated him to just one win so far in 2013.  Gagne wasn't happy after finishing third at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. He led early but got a poor start after the red flag and spent the last laps fighting for the podium instead of fighting for the win.  Garrett Gerloff (No. 8 Yamaha Extended Service/Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha YZF-R6) had his best race of the year in California, matching his best result of second place at Daytona but this time with a much more competitive battle on his hands. The result was a nice milestone for the young rider's progress after missing virtually all of last season with an injury. The question now is whether Gerloff can do it again and continue toward his goal of getting his first class win this season.  Seventeen-year-old Gerloff is currently the top GoPro Daytona SportBike rider in the running for the Roadracing World Young Gun Of The Year Award standings with 149 points, but the strong seasons Corey Alexander and Stefano Mesa are having in AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport put them atop the charts with 191 and 168 points, respectively.

JD Beach (No. 95 RoadRace Factory Yamaha YZF-R6) is third in points after improving his competitiveness this season and but his lead over Gerloff is down to five. Beach finished seventh last year in Utah, but the Kentucky resident has finished fifth or better in each 2013 event. Part of the reason for his success has been that Beach has concentrated on getting up to speed sooner and has improved his consistency. In California, Beach rallied at one of his least favorite tracks to get fifth.  Two young riders are battling for the fifth-place spot in the points. James Rispoli (No. 43 National Guard/Celtic Racing Suzuki GSX-R600) currently hold the position, with Jake Lewis (No. 85 Meen Motorsports Racing Yamaha YZF-R6) right on his tail just three points back heading into the races in Utah. In the battle of the two class rookies, Rispoli has been the most consistent with five seventh-place finishes. Lewis earned the podium at Road America with two additional fourth places to bolster his third place in Wisconsin. The final races will determine which young ace can have bragging rights, however.

Dane Westby (No. 5 GEICO Motorcycle Road Racing Honda CBR600RR) has been fighting hard to get back on top in a tough season. An injury at Daytona set him back and his team switched to new equipment for 2013. Westby has found himself in a tough group of riders battling for slots in the top ten. The good news is that "The Wolverine" has finished eighth or better in every race since the season opener at Daytona.  Jason DiSalvo (No. 40 Latus Motors Racing Triumph Daytona 675) finished second last year at Utah and the veteran has ridden well in 2013 despite some up-and-down results. DiSalvo and his team continue to develop the 2013 Triumph Daytona 675 with success, but the New Yorker has said tracks that require acceleration onto long straights after slow corners aren't his ideal circuits. That being said, DiSalvo had a strong showing at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, running as high as second place before finishing fourth, and he will look to carry that momentum into this weekend's event.  Bobby Fong (No. 50 D&D Cycles/Castrol/Triumph Daytona 675) opened up the season strong with a third-place result in the DAYTONA 200, but the class veteran has been struggling to get back to the podium ever since. He's starting to show some signs of momentum, finishing in the top ten at the last two events. The Californian has shown that he can turn it around at any time and looks to match or better his top-five finish at MMP last year.  Benny Solis (No. 3 M4 Lucas Oil Racing Honda CBR600RR) and Joey Pascarella (No. 52 Riders Discount Racing Triumph Daytona 675) are fighting for the last spot in the top ten in points.
