AMA Pro Flat Track Heads to Springfield for Labor Day Weekend Doubleheader Round

THE Mile.  You can see it in the riders' faces by the steely look on their faces.  You can see it by looking into their eyes, which mostly appear as black and white glassy balls of sheer determination and focus.  You can see it in their stance and in their body language as they get ready to approach a 25-lap race that pits man/woman and machine against 17 other men/women and machines at speeds approaching 140 mph, and proximity to the person next to you closer then a knat landing on your neck.  Mostly, you can see they want to spend this time before the madness to concentrate on their game plan, let alone their escape route(s).

Round 6 of the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series took place at the one place that most every rider in The Rolling Thunder Show wants to win at, the Springfield Mile, in late May.  And one rider came away with his first-ever series win at the historic venue, and 17 riders went home with that feeling of 'what if?'

With the series ready to roll into the Illinois State Fairgrounds for it's annual Labor Day Weekend doubleheader, the 2011 season is slowly sinking into the sunset, not unlike the summer that has come, and mostly gone.  With just six rounds left in what is now a 20 race season, the time to go or go home is upon the riders in the best racing on wheels in the world.  And at this point in the season, there are four riders with a very legitimate shot at the 2011 AMA Grand National Championship, although at this point it looks to be a 3 man race to the final season checkers at Pomona.  And what those 3 or 4 men do this coming weekend over the course of just over 24 hours will surely dictate what that final outcome could very well be.

On the front line ready to roll are 6 of the top 8 men in the championship hunt, with the 7th man, Jared Mees on his #9 Rogers Lake Racing/Blue Springs H-D/Lucas Oil/Saddlemen-sponsored XR750 lining up on the outside pole of the second row.  This is the man that won the last high-speed jaunt at Springfield in May, and also went on to win two other events in the Twins Series to vault him into the middle of the championship battle.  Mees' year has been spectacular by any fashion, and his Mr. Consistency title from the last several years has led him to also be Mr. You-Better-Watch-Out-For-Me at any/all events he puts it on the line.  Only 3 points behind current overall points leader Sammy Halbert (268-265), The Jammer is poised to strike should the opportunity arise.  And with his run of dominance in the Twins Series events this year, Mees could very well be adding to his '09 AMA Grand National Twins Championship when it's all over.

With Sammy Halbert on his #7 Kings Kustoms/LZ Racing/KK Supply/Nelson Racing-sponsored XR leading the big show in terms of points lead and wins on the year (4), the title is Slammin Sammy's to lose at this point of the season.  Having shown he can win on either the Singles or the Twins machines, his only non-win of this season has been on the mile.  But he does have a 5th from the Sacto Mile to go along with his 2nd at Springfield, and when you do the math, he is a combined just-over 3 seconds from that top spot on the big ovals podium.  The Washington State resident is ready to change that, and Sunday could be the day for the 'mythical' 2009 AMA Flat Track/Flat Track.com Grand National Champion.

Bryan Smith showed up to Springfield I with his newly-formed Twins team with a pair of sparkling aqua, black and white #42 Moroney's Fasthog.com/American H-D/Rockyonline.com/Boughner Racing-sponsored XRs, and quicky showed he hadn't lost the feel of the long-time Milwaukee iron twins after having been away a year riding the Werner-Springsteen Kawasaki.  Flyin Bryan quickly was up to speed, winning his heat race at the line in a sneak-outside pass move over Halbert and Mees.  Unfortunately, his mount went away in the final, but his surge vaulted him to a Twins Series run that saw him take the win at Sacramento, and gather up three more podiums and another top 6.  Some might say that Springfield owes him one.  And although Smith is out of the championship hunt, his move into the 8th spot of the overall standings (133 points) could see him end up in the top 5 should the cards fall right for the Michigan veteran.

Defending '10 AMA Grand National Champion Jake Johnson currently sits in the 3rd spot of the overall standings (249 points) with his #1 Zanotti Racing/Schaeffer's H-D/Boughner Racing/Arai-sponsored XR, just 19 points out of the lead.  With a win at both the Salinas TT and Springfield TT, Jersey Jake is still hunting his first Twins Series win of the 2011 season.  And with 5 of 6 races left in the Twins Series, don't overlook the man who won the title last year by being in the hunt the whole season.  Johnson has two wins at Springfield in the last four events, and you can bet he hasn't forgotten what standing on the top step at the Illinois State Fairgrounds is like, and JJ always seems to come on stronger as the season rolls on.  And when is the last time you EVER counted out the man wearing the #1 plate?  And if you did, you probably had to kick yourself for doing so.  Keep that in mind this weekend, or for that matter anytime you think you might want to bet against the man wearing the Big #1.

Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. sits on his #2 Harley-Davidson Motor Co/Screamin' Eagle/Spectro Oils/Fox-backed factory Harley-Davidson XR750 with a win each at this point in the season in the Single Series (DuQuoin) and the Twins Series (Hagerstown) and the ability to pounce like the 3-Time Twins Series Champion that he is.  During the 2010 season, The King of Cool had gone since the previous year's Lucas Oil Indy Mile without a win, until the series hit the Minnesota Mile, where KC showed the troops he was far from being forgotten.  Here's another man to NOT forget this weekend, as he is still within striking distance of point leader Halbert, with 211 points (4th place in the overall standings.)  Coolbeth knows the mile, and he rides the bike that has won the most times in the last almost-30 seasons on a mile, of which he has won 8 mile events himself.  And this brings up another good point...never count out factory horsepower on a mile track.  EVER.  Or a fine rider of Cool's ability!

Chris Carr and his Kenny Tolbert-prepped #4 American Motorcyclist Assoc/DFW Honda/Arai/Phoenix Racing-backed XR750s head to their final Springfield Mile as one of the stops on the Chris Carr Farewell to Flat Track Tour, a venue he has won at 12 times over the course of his career, and only 2nd to career Springfield Mile winner and 9-Time Grand National Champion, Scotty Parker.  The 7-Time Champ is still looking for his first win since the '08 Lucas Oil Indy Mile, but it's not for want of trying (and trying harder!)  With 165 points for the season, and in the 6th spot in the overall standings, don't bet against the Prince of Peoria getting that 79th overall win this weekend in Illinois, as the elder statesman on The Rolling Thunder Show has been showing everyone at every venue this year that he doesn't want to go out hungry.  And I sure wouldn't get in his way at the chow line while he is going for the big steak!  Go get 'em Champ.

'09 AMA Pro Singles Champion and 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Rookie of the Year shoe-in Brad Baker showed up to Springfield I locked and loaded with his #12 Lloyd Brothers Motorsports/TeamHurtbyAccident.com/Foremost Insurance/ENI USA-sponsored Ducati and promptly went out and set fast time and won his heat in his first full year in the Expert Twins Series class.  An ill handling machine saw The Bullet forced to settle for 5th on the day, but when it was all said and done, everyone knew the Washington State resident was in the house, and ready to party.  Since then, Baker has only failed to make one race (Hagerstown, where the Big Duc suffered from a broken throttle position sensor that caused them to miss the main.)  With his 5th place in the standings (169 points) now being threatened by 7-Time Champ Carr, look for Bad Brad to hit the ground running to protect his spot in the overall standings.  And to get that Big Red Duc to the top of the box at the legendary Illinois facility.  The fine young man with the million dollar smile will most likely be the one that mixes up the numbers come Sunday when all is said and done.  And will probably leave a few more believers in the house shaking their heads!

(Note Lloyd Brothers' team coach/wrench and former National #23 Kevin Atherton talking to former AMA Flat Track Director, Mike Kidd, as Baker seems to be the only rider in the mix who is relaxed as he listens in on what the two former competitors are carrying on about.)

There's still a handful of guys that could be in the big mix this Sunday.  Johnny Lewis on his #10 Scott Powersports Kawasaki has been getting stronger at each stop on the tour, Matt Weidman is set to park his #20 White's H-D for one of Carl Patrick's lightning-fast XRs, Willie McCoy always puts on a great show on his #59 Harley-Davidson of Wausau XR whenever he hits the track at Springfield, and with any luck the Werner-Springsteen Monster Energy Kawasaki team with Shaun Russell will be getting closer to getting to the front after what has been a dismal season in 2011 after a stellar year in 2010.  If anyone can pull a rabbit out of the hat, Bill Werner and Jay Springsteen can probably do it better!

It's time to put up, or shut up, as The Rolling Thunder Show pulls the pin on rounds 15 and 16 in Springfield, IL. this weekend, as the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series gets ready to rock 'n roll heading into the home stretch.  Whether you're in or not, you need to strap in, cause it's gonna get wild and wooly down the stretch!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In what looks like a scene from a bomb going off in the movie 'Apocalypse Now,' riders head into turn one of the first lap at the Peoria TT on Sunday, August 21 in what would end up being the race to keep Henry Wiles from winning his 7th straight Peoria TT on his #17 Monster Energy Kawasaki/Jones Bros/Shift Racing/Don's Kawasaki/Arai-sponsored KX450F.  Well, that plan worked well, didn't it, as Hammerin Hank came back to Peoria after his knee surgery to again turn the tables on The Rolling Thunder Show and take the win at the Peoria Motorcycle Club-promoted and run event.

The 2-Time Singles Series Champ heads to the Springfield Short Track with a four-race win streak at the Rodeo Arena, and trying to duplicate the magic that was the 2010 version of the series' stop, where he ran the tables all night, and culminated with his winning the Dash to seal his 2nd Singles Championship, and going on to win his 4th short track event on Labor Day Weekend.  Don't count out The Hammer, as he has shown he is back and ready.

Sammy Halbert on the #7 Woody Kyle Racing/Fredericktown Yamaha/AGV/Kings Kustoms-backed YZ450F goes high and outside, and will be ready for battle come Saturday night.  Bryan Smith follows on his #42 Fasthog.com/American H-D/Rockyonline.com/Boughner Racing-backed Honda CRF450R, with Rob Pearson on his #27 Matt Reecy Racing/RPM/WKR/Moose-sponsored Yamaha YZ450F splitting up the middle of Smith and Jared Mees on the #9 Lucas Oil/National Cycle/Rogers Lake/Montgomeryville Cycle-backed Honda.

Chris Carr on the #4 Amer. Motorcyclist Assoc/DFW Honda/Classic H-D/Arai-sponsored Honda goes high with Chad Cose on the #49 M.E.H. Corp/Arleness/Bell Waters Autobody/Top One Oil-sponsored Honda following suit.  Inside, Jake Johnson on the #1 Zanotti Racing/Schaeffer's H-D/Boughner Racing/MotionPro-backed Honda kicks up a roost as Matt Weidman on the #20 SNIP/Shoei/R&D Springs/Silkolene-sponsored Honda looks up the rightside of Johnson.

Showing some serious styling maneuvers is Johnny Lewis on the #10 Scott Powersports/Dubach Racing Developments/Saddlemen/Triple J-backed Honda while trying to keep Justin Hittle on the #81 Bob Berry Racing/Grayboy Motorsports/WKR/Lucas Oil-sponsored Honda at bay.

The only difference between this first lap dash at Peoria and the one coming up on Saturday night at Springfield, is the riders will be shy a front brake and they won't have to make any jumps during the course of the evening.  Other then that, you can expect complete mayhem when the green flag drops for the main event at the Springfield Short Track, round 15 in the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series.

And boy, will it be fun!

Labor Day Weekend Sees Return of the AMA Pro Springfield Double-Header!

DAYTONA BEACH, FL (August 26, 2011) - The AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Flat Track Championship returns to action in a big way via Springfield's annual Labor Day Weekend Double-Header, for which the Illinois State Fairgrounds will host the Springfield ST on Saturday, September 3, followed by the Springfield Mile II on Sunday, September 4. Rarely are fans given the chance to experience the handlebar-banging, push-and-shove action of Short Track racing and the high-speed, intense strategy of Mile racing in one weekend, and the legendary Springfield venue makes this a can't-miss event.

While no one rider can win the AMA Pro Grand National Championship at Springfield, they could certainly lose it, as the stakes are high and the points-margins are narrow. Current GNC leader Sammy Halbert (Woody Kyle Racing/Fredericktown Yamaha) heads Jared Mees (Lucas Oils/National Cycle/Rogers Lake Racing) by just three points, and with defending GNC Champion Jake Johnson (Zanotti Racing) only sixteen points back -- an easy-to-overcome disadvantage for someone of Johnson's skill -- none of the lead trio can afford to turn in anything but their best.

Halbert has held the points lead all season thus far, but that margin has never been as small as it is heading into Rounds 15 and 16. Mees -- having clawed his way up to his current prime hunting ground -- is determined not to be put off much longer, and Johnson, with the energy and focus of a man whose title is on the line, may be the darkest horse of all. All three are highly capable 450cc singles riders when it comes to Saturday's unpredictable Short Track, and each of the trio has podiumed at Springfield Miles before, Johnson and Mees both turning in wins.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The field will be full of riders handily able to upset the lead trio's plans, however, and chief among them is Monster Energy Kawasaki's Henry Wiles, who announced his post-knee-surgery return to competition by earning a stunning seventh consecutive Peoria TT victory at the championship's previous round. Wiles' Springfield Short Track record is nearly as impressive -- and entirely ominous for the rest of the paddock -- as he'll arrive at the arena's "Bull Ring" hunting his fifth consecutive Springfield ST win.

The Chris Carr Farewell Tour will roll into Springfield for the last time next weekend with Carr in search of a win to end his long, awe-inspiring career on, and the Springfield Mile could easily be the race in which he gets it done. It took Carr ten years to win his first Springfield Mile (in 1995), but since then he's won a staggering eleven more. Carr -- contending his 49th Springfield Main -- has been on the Springfield Mile podium no less than twenty-nine times, and he heads for Illinois determined to make it thirty.

As an added incentive for the weekend racers, former National Number 26, Tommy Duma (owner of Thom Duma Fine Jewelers in Warren, Ohio), will be awarding Tissot watches to the winners of the Short Track and Mile Dash for Cash, a prize worth $2,500. "The whole racing community holds a special place in my heart," says Duma, "and being able to give back and stay connected means the world to me. I remember being a rookie expert and mentored by my hero, Steve Morehead!"

Adding more luster to the event will be winner of the 1964 50-Mile Springfield National, Sammy Tanner, who will serve as this year's Grand Marshal and will be on-hand to sign autographs. The big Labor Day Weekend kicks off with traditional Friday-night Amateur Short Track races, which will run on the same track the AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Flat Track stars will line up to conquer the following night. A full schedule of Amateur classes will fill Friday night with action while setting the tone for the excitement to follow.

Reflections From the 4th Annual RedBull Indianapolis MotoGP Weekend

A quartet of riders hammers down the long front straight at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the third practice session for round 12 of the 2011 MotoGP World Championship.  Although announced attendance was down somewhat from last year, the crowd on Saturday actually appeared much larger then figures released.  IMS and Dorna were to have announced yesterday the return in 2012 of the MotoGP World Championship, but according to Mel Harder of IMS, this announcement has been delayed while 'final tweaks' to the schedule are being hammered out.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ben Spies motors off on his scooter behind the Yamaha Factory Racing team's garage after the 3rd practice session on Saturday, August 27.  Spies had a great race after qualifying later in the day on the front row, and being bumped back to 9th on the start of yesterday's final.  He rode like the champ he is, and most likely will be in MotoGP, to bring the 50th anniversay Yamaha home in 3rd behind winner Casey Stoner and runner-up and 2010 Indy winner Dani Pedrosa.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kenny Roberts' 1980 YZR500 championship winning machine sits on display under one of the Yamaha tents.  Roberts rode some demo laps on this very machine at Laguna Seca last month, but unfortunately it was 'display only' at Indy.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alvaro Bautista does some interesting stretching exercises as he rolls out of pitlane on the #19 Rizla Suzuki GSV-R during the 3rd practice session on Saturday morning, August 27.  Whatever they were, they definitely seemed to work as Bautista brought the machine home in the 6th spot in Sunday's round 12 action of the 2011 MotoGP World Championship race at Indy.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mike Lloyd of the Lloyd Brothers Motorsports Ducati team had the team's AMA Pro Flat Track machine on display inside the massive Ducati Island area over the course of the weekend.  In both passes I made to try and get a chance to say hi, Mike was busy with the fans talking about the machine that currently sits in the 5th overall position in the point standings with rider Brad Baker.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nicky Hayden appears all smiles en route to Ducati Island at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on August 27.  Hayden had his worst-ever weekend at IMS in finishing 15th and only scoring a single point after choosing a tire that was too soft, even in the cooler Sunday final temperatures.  The Kentucky Kid spent the better part of his off-time away from the bike hanging with friends and family and signing autographs for many a fan over the weekend.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As Dean Adams from SuperBikePlanet.com puts it, the 'bike that wouldn't die' was on display in the Yamaha display vendor area over the weekend at Indy.  This is the same replica TZ750 that The King rode some demo laps on at the Lucas Oil Indy Mile in 2009.  I never get tired of seeing this, even after 36 years passing!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Colin Edwards' #5 Monster Energy Tech 3 Yamaha M1 sits on display under one of the Yamaha tents at the RedBull Indianapolis MotoGP round.  The Texas Tornado was inundated with questions as to his plans for the 2012 season, but wasn't able to shine a light on his future over the weekend.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One of the late Gary Nixon's former Triumph Triples was on display in the paddock area at IMS over the weekend.  Former racer Steve Parrish also did a lap of honor on the bike to pay homage to his departed friend, who passed away in early August.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Monster Energy umbella girls kept many a race fan very happy while posing behind the MotoGP garages at Indianapolis, including long-time race fan and compatriot/best bud of Stu's Shots, Tim Powers.  Powers is also a former National WERA champion from back in the mid-late '80s.  Smiles all around!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Figuring out the MotoGP credentials board takes an advanced degree in algebra.  WTF!?

AMA Road Racing: Chris Fillmore Wins His 4th Vance & Hines XR1200 Series Race at RedBull Indianapolis MotoGP

Chris Fillmore on the #55 Bruce Rossmeyer's Daytona Racing/Revolution Performance-sponsored XR1200 leads the breakaway front runners during mid-race of the AMA Pro Road Racing Vance & Hines XR1200 Series presented by Harley-Davidson Insurance race 1 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on August 27.  Following closely on his heels is eventual winner Tyler O'Hara on his #29 Tyler O'Hara Racing XR, with Steve Rapp on the #5 Parts Unlimited/Vance & Hines-sponsored XR1200 and Jeremy McWilliams on his #99 Harley-Davidson of Bloomington/Indiana Biker's Choice-sponsored XR.

Fillmore made up for his crash during race 1 from Saturday afternoon, by leading Rapp and O'Hara home to the checkers in race 2, and in the process gapping Rapp in the championship battle by 12 total points heading into the season ending round at NJMP over the Labor Day Weekend.  McWilliams finished 5th yesterday, with Rapp's team mate, Michael Barnes bringing his #34 machine home in the 4th spot.

Fillmore Finds Retribution in Vance & Hines XR1200 Race 2 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Championship Battle Narrows via Vance & Hines XR1200 presented by
Harley-Davidson Insurance Doubleheader

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (August 28, 2011) - After suffering heartbreak in yesterday's AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 presented by Harley-Davidson Insurance Race 1, Chris Fillmore -- who crashed out, and out of the points, after Jeremy McWilliams made contact -- took his revenge on the field with a determined victory in Race 2. Finishing ahead of his closest championship rival, Steve Rapp, Fillmore crossed Indianapolis Motor Speedway's famous Yard of Bricks with a margin of just .169 seconds after a race-long duel. Yesterday's race winner, Tyler O'Hara, finished third.

"My plan going in to yesterday was to kind of play it a little bit conservative," said Bruce Rossmeyer Daytona Racing GEICO's Fillmore, whose victory today allowed him to extend his lead over Rapp from three to twelve points. "After the crash I had on Friday, I wasn't sure how I was going to be on the bike. Yesterday didn't go as planed, so today I came in with a game plan of trying to throw down and pull away. It didn't happen, and those guys were right there the whole time, so we just had to race it out. It was a little stressful for me, but I wasn't going to let them by and I was going to do everything I could to keep it out front."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Taking his second runner-up position in as many days, Parts Unlimited's Rapp diced furiously with Fillmore and O'Hara through each lap of the ten-lap race. "I tried [to win] from the front yesterday," said Rapp, "and the only thing different today was that I tried from second-place and it was the same result. It was a good race today; it was nice that it was just me and Fillmore at the end just going for it. I was definitely faster going through Turns 5, 6, 7 -- I could make up all the time on him there -- but the straightaways were tougher."

Wearing a Gary Nixon tribute shirt over his leathers, yesterday's winner, Tyler O'Hara, was once again a major factor in today's race, leading the opening three laps and staying right in the thick of things throughout. "On the victory lap yesterday," said O'Hara, "I was doing some burnouts and I messed up my clutch. It sounded really bad, but we got it fixed last night so I was happy to be out here on the grid today. The racing was just awesome from Lap 1," O'Hara continued. "Steve and Fillmore were just on it -- they weren't making any mistakes. We were racing back and forth swapping positions, and everyone was racing clean. It was aggressive, and I had a lot of fun."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Michael Barnes piloted the Drag Specialties XR1200 to his second fourth-place finish of the weekend, followed by Jeremy McWilliams (Harley-Davidson of Bloomington) and Canadian Harley-Davidson XR1200 Cup Champion, Steve Crevier (Motosports Plus/STS Racing). Latus Motors Racing's Jason DiSalvo -- yesterday's third-place finisher -- again worked his way into the lead group but suffered a Lap 6 mechanical heading down the front straight that forced him off the track.

The incredible footpeg-dragging action of the AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 presented by Harley-Davidson Insurance doubleheader aired within hours of Race 2's finish, via a 6 p.m. ET broadcast on SPEED. With just a single race left in the 2011 Vance & Hines XR1200 season, a total of thirty-two points will be up for grabs when the Harley-Davidson field rolls out at New Jersey Motorsports Park, putting all the pressure -- and all the eyes -- on Fillmore and Rapp this Labor Day Weekend.

AMA Road Racing: Tyler O'Hara Wins Inaugural Vance & Hines XR1200 Event at RedBull Indy MotoGP Round

Tyler O'Hara on the #29 Tyler O'Hara Racing-sponsored H-D XR1200 leads the lead pack of riders with just a few laps to go in the inaugural AMA Pro Road Racing Vance & Hines XR1200 Series presented by Harley-Davidson Insurance event at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this afternoon.  O'Hara kept it out front for the final run to the flag to beat out Steve Rapp by just .048 seconds after 10 laps of exciting racing at the Brickyard.

In what was a high-level energy event at the first of a two-race round this weekend, the XR1200 Series put on one heckuva show today that more then showed they belong on the undercard of the premier road racing series in the world at the World Capital of Racing.

The lead pack of O'Hara, XR1200 point leader Chris Fillmore on his #55 Bruce Rossmeyer's Racing/Revolution Performance-sponsored machine, Irishman Jeremy McWilliams on the #99 H-D of Bloomington/Indiana Biker's Choice-backed XR, Steve Rapp on the #5 Parts Unlimited/Vance & Hines-sponsored mount, and Daytona SportBike-regular Jason DiSalvo on the #40 Latus Motors Racing/RSRaceCraft.com-backed XR broke off from the 33 rider field early in the going.  Taking advantage of the large hole that the over-500 lb. machines punch through the air, the estimated 50K+ crowd was treated to what surely will go down as one of the most exciting races of any kind to run at the century old Indianapols track.  Needless to say, between the draft and the slick moves these riders were putting on one another ALL over the 2.6 mile track, it was quite the racing spectacle of who could make the move on whom throughout the 10-lap race, let alone where.

Swapping the lead too many times to keep count, the five-rider lead pack was slimmed down to 3 men when McWilliams and point leader Fillmore came together on the final lap of the 10-lap race.  Fillmore was the big loser on and off the track on this one, as his machine was too damaged to continue and was credited with 21st place, with McWilliams going down a couple of corners later, but able to remount to finish a very credible 10th.  Fillmore's lead in the point standings was whittled down to 6 points with Rapp's resulting 2nd place finish, after scoring a single point for what up until his crash was a very fine performance.

Meanwhile, Rapp, DiSalvo and O'Hara were having a battle for the ages on the final lap, just as they had throughout the whole race, with O'Hara taking a hard-earned and well-deserved win over Rapp by just .048 seconds.  DiSalvo was another .59 seconds back in what was all but a photo finish.  Rapp moved within striking distance of the championship as a result of his great run in 2nd and Fillmore's crash, after coming into Indy with a 30 point deficit.  With tomorrow afternoon's round and the final event of the season next weekend at NJMP, Rapp sits firmly in the catbird seat ready to pounce for the championship.

Tomorrow afternoon's event is scheduled to roll off at 3:30 PM EDT, and the weekend's events will be shown on SpeedTV tomorrow night at 6 PM EDT.

You owe it to yourself to check this one out!  These guys put on one of THE best races to have ever run at IMS, and that's coming from someone who has seen an awful lot of racing at the Brickyard in the last five decades.  It very well could have been one of the most exciting races to have EVER run there, and the riders, teams, sponsors, fans and AMA Pro Road Racing should all be applauded for putting on such a great show today.  Bravo!

Tyler O'Hara Takes Career-First AMA Pro Victory in Inaugural XR1200 Race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (August 27, 2011) - Tyler O'Hara joined a select group of racers today by taking his career-first AMA Pro victory in the inaugural AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 presented by Harley-Davidson Insurance race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Though O'Hara led eight of the ten laps, his win was anything but easy, as Tyler -- running under his own team banner -- battled Parts Unlimited's Steve Rapp, series points-leader Chris Fillmore (Bruce Rossmeyer Daytona Racing GEICO), 2010 British XR1200 Trophy Champion Jeremy McWilliams, and Latus Motors Racing's Jason DiSalvo throughout the pass-laden contest.

"It just feels really good right now," said an emotional O'Hara, who ran down pit lane on foot -- waving the checkered flag -- after his bike stopped on course during the victory lap. "This is my first AMA Pro win, and I feel phenomenal right now; it's been a long time coming. I've been racing pretty much my whole life, about eighteen years, and I've had a lot of upsets, led a lot of big races, and never really caught a break, and it seems like this weekend I was in the right place at the right time and caught a break there at the end."

A dramatic start to today's race saw eight bikes crash out within seconds of leaving the line, Kyle Wyman one of the quickest of the unlucky riders. At the front, O'Hara and Fillmore tore through corners followed closely followed by Rapp, McWilliams, and DiSalvo, the five-rider group kicking off one of the classically intense passing-and-drafting battles the Vance & Hines XR1200 class has become known for.

While O'Hara and Fillmore traded the lead over and over again -- O'Hara drafting by Fillmore on the Brickyard's long front straight, Fillmore answering back in the corners immediately after -- Rapp and McWilliams both signaled their intention to be podium contenders, with DiSalvo ramping up his own times as the laps clicked off. After sinking momentarily back to fifth, Rapp surged up to third and immediately engaged fellow 2011 XR1200 Championship contender Fillmore. McWilliams, however, wasn't inclined to sit back and watch -- he joined the slicing-and-dicing of Fillmore and Rapp and the trio headed into a corner three-wide.

Contact looked inevitable, and it was. "I saw McWilliams trying to come down on me," said Rapp, "and there wasn't enough room. I knew Fillmore was on the outside of him, and I figured there definitely wasn't enough room for him. I touched Jeremy slightly, and after that, I don't know what happened."

McWilliams, having split Rapp and Fillmore, tangled with the latter, Fillmore getting the worst of it and going down. Though he tried to rejoin the race, Fillmore's damage machined forced him to retire, resulting in serious damage to the Michigan native's championship hopes. McWilliams himself was down moments later, though he was ultimately able to reenter the race and finish tenth.

Up front, meanwhile, Rapp had gotten by O'Hara and looked prime to take the win, but Tyler absolutely refused to be denied. Instead, the cagey former AMA Pro SuperSport Top Gun champ was able to draft by Rapp at the line to take the historic victory by a margin of just .048 of a second.

DiSalvo, who'd put himself in perfect position to take advantage of the last-lap incidents, took third. "I saw [the contact and resulting crash] coming but I didn't think it was going to be there; I figured it would be off the back straight. I thought guys were going to get a little bit wild, and when it happened, it definitely opened the door for me. I'd been kind of swinging wide there in Turn 2 all race long, and on the lap it happened, I was in the right place at the right time and was able to take advantage of it, for sure."

Drag Specialties' Michael Barnes earned fourth after a solid race, followed across the line by 2011 Canadian Harley-Davidson XR1200 Cup Champion Steve Crevier. Local rider Gene Burcham made his dream of racing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway come true today with a nineteenth-place finish, followed by the first female rider both to compete in the Vance & Hines XR1200 class and to race at the Brickyard, Shelina Moreda.

Today's race results have blown the championship points-race wide open, as Fillmore -- who earned only a single point, for pole position -- has seen his prior thirty-point advantage over Rapp dwindle to just six. Race 2, which goes green at 3:30 p.m. ET tomorrow, will provide one of only three opportunities remaining for Fillmore to strike back.

Casey Stoner Takes His #27 Repsol Honda to His 7th Pole of the Year For the 4th Annual RedBull Indianapolis MotoGP

Casey Stoner rolls down pitlane during free practice session #3 at the RedBull Indianapolis MotoGP round at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday, August 27.  The Australian again showed the field at Indy this year that he is on top of his game in leading the fastest practice session of the first day of on-track action on his #27 Repsol Honda RC212V, and backed it up by leading the 3rd session this morning, and then decimating the field by over .5 seconds to win his 7th pole of the 2011 season.

The '07 MotoGP World Champion showed the way this afternoon and set his fastest time on lap 22 of 25 laps turned in the qualifying session, laying down a time of 1.38:850 to take pole over Texan Ben Spies on the #11 Yamaha Factory Racing M1 by .523 seconds.  Defending 2010 MotoGP World Champion Jorge Lorenzo on the #1 Yamaha Factory Racing M1 was another .256 seconds back of team mate Spies to round out the front row.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Casey Stoner is on a roll in 2011 and is well on his way to what could be his 2nd MotoGP World Championship.  The Repsol Honda rider led the 17 rider field this afternoon in qualifying, and dusted the competition while doing so to set a new track record at the recently repaved Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, in preparation for tomorrow afternoon's 4th Annual RedBull Indianapolis MotoGP round 12 race.

Ben Spies on his #11 Yamaha M1 ended up in the middle of the front row, .523 seconds behind pole man and championship points leader Stoner, with fellow Americans Colin Edwards on the #5 Tech 3 Yamaha qualifying in the 6th position, and Nicky Hayden on the #69 Ducati ending up in the 8th qualifying position.  9-Time World Champion Valentino Rossi struggled during the afternoon qualifying session on his #46 Ducati, setting in the 16th spot throughout the 60 minute session, and with less then 10 minutes left managed to qualify 14th on the grid.

Reliable rumors have it that tomorrow IMS and Dorna will officially announce that the RedBull Indy MotoGP round will return for the 2012 season, as not only were the crowds strong today, but the MotoGP folks are very happy with the recently repaved track.  This is great news for the East Coast fans not wanting to have to travel to Laguna Seca, or for that matter to Texas in 2013, to see a premier road racing event.  Indy's dedication to keeping the MotoGP round here at the infamous Brickyard looks to have paid off with the announcement expected during tomorrow's events.

AMA Road Racing: New Entries, Larger Purse & Great TV Times for AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Series Rounds During RedBull Indy MotoGP Weekend

Jason DiSalvo can be seen talking with some members of his crew, while team mate Chase McFarland pulls on the gloves and gets ready to hit the track during the AMA Pro Road Racing Vance & Hines XR1200 Series presented by Harley-Davidson Insurance two-day test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.  DiSalvo's #40 Latus Motors Racing/RSRaceCraft.com/FMF/Speedymoto-sponsored machine sits at the ready for the Friday, August 19 afternoon test, while McFarland's #19 Latus Motors Racing sits just behind.

After turning the fastest laps of the two-day test during the afternoon session, DiSalvo made himself a very likely contender to win the doubleheader round at this weekend's RedBull Indianapolis MotoGP events, which have picked up some extra purse money for both races as well as some name riders from the world of motorcycle racing.  But he'll have that much more added competition with the weekend's entry list growing.

Here's hoping the weekend goes good for all, and the extra addition of the XR1200 Series to the MotoGP weekend undercard can help to bring in some new AND returning faces to the track, and add a few paying butts to the seats.  This should make for a great event overall with the addition of the XRs and should make for some pretty exciting racing.

More Big Names All-in for AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Competition at Red Bull Indy GP

DAYTONA BEACH, FL (August 24, 2011) - With entries for this weekend's AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 presented by Harley-Davidson Insurance double-header at Indianapolis Motor Speedway already more than eight rows deep, several additional racers have stepped up to throw their helmets in the ring, including HOG's Shelina Moreda. While AMA Pro Motorycle-Superstore.com SuperSport star Elena Myers became the first female to earn an AMA Pro victory, Moreda's participation in the August 26-28 event marks the first time a female motorcycle rider has competed at the venerable Brickyard in the venue's 100-plus years of motorcycle-racing history.

"I am very excited to be a part of this huge race," said Moreda, "and to not only be the first female to race in the AMA Pro XR1200 class, but the first female ever in the 100-year history of the track to race on a motorcycle at Indy!" The former District 3 California Dairy Princess -- who learned how to ride motorcycles while growing up on a dairy farm -- added, "My father is a huge fan of the Brickyard, and we were naturally excited about racing at a track that has strong ties to the dairy industry."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While a track famous for serving up milk in Victory Circle is sure to make a fourth-generation racer and fifth-generation dairy farmer feel right at home, Moreda and every other racer on the grid will have their hands more than full when the races go green at Indianapolis. The ferocious, thirty-plus riders already committed to the event tore through two days of testing last week, and though AMA Pro Daytona SportBike star Jason DiSalvo set the bar high by notching the quickest overall time, Vance & Hines XR1200 Championship points-leader Chris Fillmore -- who held back during testing to give an injured shoulder more time to heal -- remains a dark horse.

The Harley-Davidson class' Red Bull Indianapolis GP debut will also see the U.S. return of Canadian Steve Crevier, a former AMA Supersport Champion, six-time Canadian Superbike Champion, and reigning Canadian Harley-Davidson XR1200 Cup Series Champion. Add 2010 British XR1200 Trophy Champion Jeremy McWilliams, two-time race winner Steve Rapp, and season-opener victor Kyle Wyman to a host of other quick names, and Red Bull Indy GP fans are sure to be treated to some of the best competition that's crossed the yard of bricks.

AMA Pro Racing Announces Enhanced Purse and SPEED Coverage for XR1200 Indianapolis Double-Header

DAYTONA BEACH, FL (August 24, 2011) - AMA Pro Racing is pleased to announce a special $30,000 purse for this weekend's Vance & Hines XR1200 presented by Harley-Davidson Insurance races, which will run as part of the Red Bull Indianapolis GP weekend, August 26-28. To honor the class' inaugural appearance at the famed Brickyard, a number of companies -- Harley-Davidson Insurance, Dunlop Tires, Vance & Hines, and Harley-Davidson -- have stepped up to provide extra support for this historic event.

The generous support of these companies has resulted in a $15,000 purse for each Vance & Hines XR1200 race (paying down through twentieth position) and has helped make possible a special SPEED TV broadcast that will deliver complete coverage of the Indianapolis XR1200 double-header to home audiences. The show will air Sunday, August 28, at 6 p.m. ET, and history will be made Saturday, when Harley-Davidson motorcycles line up to race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the first time in more than 100 years.

The riders who take victories this weekend will be following in the distant footsteps of A.G. Chapple and E.G. Baker, who earned the August 1909 five-mile and ten-mile race wins at IMS, respectively. Among the thirty-plus riders who've signed up to vie for that honor are current championship points-leader Chris Fillmore, Daytona SportBike star Jason DiSalvo, two-time XR1200 race winner Steve Rapp, 2010 British XR1200 Trophy Champion Jeremy McWilliams, and 2011 Canadian Harley-Davidson XR1200 Cup Champion Steve Crevier. Joining them will be a litany of other quick riders including Shelina Moreda -- the first female motorcycle racer to compete at Indianapolis -- and popular Indiana locals Michael Morgan and Gene Burcham.
