Brad Baker #1 Gets His 1st Win of the Season in Round 15 of the AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship at the Ramspur Winery Calistoga Half-Mile, Davis Fisher Returns to Action to Win 1st Pro Singles Race of His Young Career

Brad Baker on the #1 Harley-Davidson Motor Co/Screamin' Eagle Racing Parts-sponsored factory XR750 started from the second row in the 8th spot of the grid and worked his way to the front to take the lead and the win over runner-up and new 2014 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship points leader Jared Mees by just over 1.6 seconds. The points leader going into the race, Bryan Smith on the #42 Villa-Esparza/Crosley Radio-backed Kawasaki, started smoking towards the end of the 25-lap Grand National main and was given the black flag, but reportedly didn't recognize it with only two laps remaining and was stripped of his initial second-place finish and DQ'd from the race, thus handing the series lead over to 2012 AMA Grand National Champion Mees.

Jake Johnson on the #5 Ramspur Winery/Lloyd Brothers Motorsports-sponsored H-D XR750 continued his season strong run of podium finishes to bring the most diversified team in the paddock home in th e 3rd-place spot. With the DQ of Smith and Mees runner-up finish, the points took a swing with Mees now leading Smith 260-247 and Johnson hanging tough in the third spot with 244 points heading into the final round of the season on October 11 at the Pomona Half-Mile Flat Track Finals.

Dash for Cash winner Sammy Halbert brought his #7 South East H-D home in the 4th-place spot, with Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. on the #2 Zanotti Racing XR rounding out the top-5. Fast qualifier Doug Lawrence on his #73 Lawrence Racing XR brought it home in 6th-place, Jake Shoemaker in his second time aboard the #55 USC Racing Kawasaki took home 7th, Jeffrey Carver, Jr. on the #23 Dan Dafner XR was 8th, Brandon Robinson improved his Springfield Mile II finish of 10th-place back on the #44 TJ Burnett Farms Kawasaki to grab 9th-place and Henry Wiles rounded out the top-10 on the #17 Don's Kawasaki.

In the shot above, Brad Baker gets low on the tank on the front straight on the #1 Harley-Davidson Motor Co/Screamin' Eagle Racing Parts/Dunlop Tire-sponsored XR750 during the first practice session of the day at the legendary Indy Mile during round 11 of the 2014 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship on August 8 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

Defending champion Baker's win was a great shot in the arm for the former 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Saddlemen Rookie of the Year after a season of more downs than ups for the 21 year-old Washington State resident. After injuring in arm in a training accident several weeks before the Springfield Mile I, Baker has fought hard through the physical and mechanical challenges that have faced him in his championship defense, and has moved himself into the 5th-place spot in the overall championship standings with just the Pomona round remaining in just 13 days.

The feel good story of the weekend saw Dashin' Davis Fisher return to the track in his first race since his last-lap get off at the Indy Mile round of the AMA Pro Flat Track Pro Singles Championship where he had taken a massive body slam coming out of the fourth turn on the final lap of the Pro Singles main event.

Fisher, aboard the #67M TJ Burnett Farms Kawasaki, came out of the gate on top right off the bat in his return to action to take fast time in qualifying and win his first heat aboard the TJ Burnett rocket over championship points leader Kyle Johnson. Fisher then went on to take his first win of the year and his young and promising career, as well as his first for team owner Burnett after missing the Virginia Pro Singles round and the non-points paying Pro Twins round at the Springfield Mile II in late August.

In the shot above, Dashin' Davis is shown on the #67M TJ Burnett Farms/Bob Lanphere's Beverton Motorcycles/Dan Wall Racing-sponsored Kawasaki heading out for the first practice session of the day in the AMA Pro Flat Track Pro Twins Series at the Springfield Mile I on May 25. In his only appearance on the big twin this season, Fisher showed he has what it takes to compete on all levels in The Rolling Thunder Show's junior series by taking his heat win and bringing it home in the 2nd-place spot behind another of the series's young contenders, Jarod Vanderkooi.

With his great win last night at Calistoga, and in spite of missing the Virginia round, Fisher made a big move into the 2nd-place spot of the Pro Singles Championship battle gaining serious ground on points leader Kyle Johnson, after Johnson's crash in the Pro Singles main. Johnson now only holds a slim 6-point lead over Fisher (172-166 points) with just the Pomona round remaining and has more than shown team owner TJ Burnett that he made a wise choice in bringing the young, hard charger and Oregon resident to his stellar team. Coupled with the tutelage he has received from Burnett, and team mate Brandon Robinson, Fisher has a very promising future in the greatest racing series on two wheels in the world and adds another big-time element to the future of the sport. And whichever way things go in Pomona in just under two weeks, next season's battle for the Pro Singles title between Fisher and Vanderkooi should make the great racing seen in the junior series even more exciting then what it is already.

A big shout out to Brad 'The Bullet' Baker and Dashin' Davis Fisher and big congrats for making it a double Pacific Northwest victory last night in California and for putting on a great show for all of the fans and showing anyone with a pulse that the action to be seen in the AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship is unmatched in any sport on wheels in the world!

Baker wins Ramspur Winery Calistoga Half-Mile for his first AMA Pro Flat Track victory of the year

CALISTOGA, Calif. (Sept. 27, 2014) The battle for the AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship Expert title took an unexpected turn in Saturday's Ramspur Winery Calistoga Half-Mile at Calistoga Speedway in California's wine country.

Brad Baker took the checkered flag and claimed his first victory of 2014 on the No. 1 Factory Harley-Davidson, but championship leader Bryan Smith was disqualified for failing to heed a black flag after his No. 42 Villa-Esparza/Crosley Radio Kawasaki started smoking.

Jared Mees finished second on his No. 9 Rogers Racing Harley-Davidson and will take a 13-point lead over Smith into the final round, the Flat Track Finals at the LA County Fairplex in Pomona, Calif., on Oct. 11.

"It's been an up-and-down season for both me and the team," Baker said. "We knew we had what it took and it was just lining all the pieces together." Baker started eighth but expertly carved through the field. He was sitting third when Jake Johnson passed Mees for the lead. Baker would eventually make his way around both, then cruise to a 1.634-second victory. I finally got by (Mees) and was able to pick off my own pace," Baker said. "I got by Jake at the end and I just came into my own and starting putting down consistent laps. It feels amazing putting this Harley-Davidson XR750 on top of the box."

Baker's last win before Saturday was the 2013 season finale at Pomona, where he wrapped up his GNC title. It's the third GNC victory of his career.

Smith was running in the top five when his bike started to smoke, bringing out the black flag. He took the checkered running in second position, but the finish was erased because he failed to take his bike off the track. "It's unfortunate, I know we're in a real big battle, and he and I are good buddies," Mees said.  "I know that wasn't what he wanted to see tonight."

Johnson took third place points on his No. 5 Ramspur Winery Harley-Davidson and kept himself alive in the championship hunt. The Pennsylvanian is 16 points behind Mees and just three in back of Smith.

Sammy Halbert won the Dash For Cash on his No. 7 South East Harley-Davidson, which had an enormous purse thanks to an additional $5,000 provided by Specialty Fabrications. Halbert went on to finish fourth in the main, capping a solid event for the Washington native. Kenny Coolbeth rounded out the top five on his No. 2 Zanotti Racing Harley-Davidson.

AMA Pro Flat Track Pro Singles

After coming so close so many times this year, Davis Fisher claimed his first AMA Pro Flat Track Pro Singles victory of his career. In the process, he catapulted himself back into title contention. The pilot of the No. 67M T.J. Burnett Farms Honda held off a hard charge from Jarod Vanderkooi on his 17F Johnny's Vintage Motorcycles Honda to finally take the checkered flag. Ryan Foster placed his No. 23Y Thresher Communications Honda third. Before Saturday, Fisher recorded five second place finishes.

"It feels great, I feel like I broke through the wall and I can start moving forward," Fisher said. "If I can maybe win Pomona, that would be awesome." Fisher had to be on point with his starts since the race was restarted three times due to crashes. He did get out to the front each start and led the entire main event. "I led the whole race, I knew I had Jarod behind me," Fisher said. "I just put my head down a little bit."

Kyle Johnson held a 20-point lead over Ryan Wells coming into Calistoga, but crashed out of the main event. Fisher moved into second in the title chase and sits six points back of Johnson. Wells, on the No. 94B KTM, finished 13th and is 16 points behind Johnson, pilot of the No. 77 Parkinson Brothers Racing Honda.

Vanderkooi looked to be reeling Fisher in, but a last-lap attempt to make a run ended in a scary moment and caused Vanderkooi to slip back and give Fisher a comfortable lead when he crossed the finish line. "I kept going harder and harder, gaining momentum on Davis," Vanderkooi said. "But I got too high, it was a little slick up there, and I about high sided down the back straightaway. It scared me for a minute, I thought I was going down. But awesome ride for Davis."

Ryan Kearns was fourth on his No. 99Y Josh Chisum Yamaha, and Bronson Bauman finished fifth aboard his No. 30Z Rod Lake Racing Honda.

Aoyama 8th, Hayden 9th for Team Drive M7 Aspar in MotoGP Aragon Round 14

DRIVE M7 Aspar riders fight against the odds to secure great results

Hiroshi Aoyama, eighth, with his best result of the year and Nicky Hayden ninth, riding at a high level in return race

A wet track initially, then wet-drying and wet again, as the MotoGP riders had to deal with the elements in a colorful race at Motorland Aragon. The track remained slightly damp when the race got underway at 2pm. Iannone took the lead, but Marquez showed he had more pace and intended to dominate. Meanwhile, the drastic drop in temperatures meant that the Yamaha riders stepped up today to match the performance of the Hondas and both Lorenzo and Rossi, despite getting caught up on the grid, were soon up there with the leaders. Iannone went down and then Rossi too. Lorenzo tangled with Marquez in the first half of the race, with Pedrosa riding patiently behind. The white flags came out, highlighting what was about to come, the perfect storm. In the last ten laps the rain caused havoc at Motorland. The more conservative riders changed their bikes quickly, but Marquez and Pedrosa decided to take more risks unnecessarily and crashed on slicks as the rain got heavier. Both Pedrosa and Marquez rejoined the race to finish in the points, while Lorenzo, the last of the ‘title contenders’ to win this year, crossed the finish line in first position. Behind him Espargarò and Crutchlow completed the podium.

If you had said to Nicky Hayden he would finish ninth on his return after two months out he would not have believed it. Apart from experience, one of the greatest strengths of DRIVE M7 Aspar rider is his response in adversity. The weekend at Aragon had been one of constant evolution, without discomfort in his wrist, the most important factor. Today the Kentucky rider managed to start with determination and play his cards masterfully, changing the bike just in time (17th lap) and pushing to the end to achieve ninth, his second best result of the year after his eighth achieved in Qatar. On the other side of the DRIVE M7 Aspar box, Hiroshi Aoyama also used his experience to survive in the hectic conditions. With the arrival of the rain, the Japanese rider went into the garage a lap after his teammate and also showed his best on the wet asphalt. He finished eighth, his best result of the season, a reward for the bravery shown during the 23 laps of Motorland.

Nicky Hayden 9th: "Today's race, with changing conditions, was quite hard. Even early on the track we were sliding and after ten laps the rain started getting stronger. This circuit is quite long, has many ups and downs and some blind corners, even on the straights the visibility was limited, it was difficult to find the braking markers. Still we managed a fairly positive result, but we must also consider that many riders crashed. We lost some positions when it started to rain and with the change of bike. We managed to finish the race, when three months ago I had to stop competing and I had to rebuild my wrist, so ninth position is great for us. I am happy to be back racing and competitive again. I hope to recover more, to race better in Motegi. I want to thank the team for all the work they have done for me."

Hiroshi Aoyama 8th: "Today we had a difficult race at Motorland. We opted for the harder tyre and at first we suffered, hoping to maintain a steady pace in the early laps but it proved difficult. But we were able to cope and stay in the group, and as the laps went by I started to have more grip and gain positions. I had a good feeling and I fought with Hernandez and Redding. Then it started to rain and I had doubts about the best time to change bikes. I've tried to stay as long as possible on slicks. After changing the bike, the sensation in the wet was also good and I was able to keep my position. I am very happy to have finished eighth in Spain, in a very important race for my team. The team worked perfectly all weekend and we have been competitive in each session. Now I go into the race in Japan at home with high expectations."

Motorland Aragón (Spain), 28th September 2014

Today’s Gran Premio Movistar de Aragón proved to be the most dramatic of the season so far as Movistar Yamaha MotoGP rider Jorge Lorenzo defied both his rivals and the changing weather to deliver a master class in Grand Prix riding and claim his first victory of the season.

Teammate Valentino Rossi’s Aragón fortunes were the mirror opposite, the Italian crashing out in the early laps.

With a dry start to the race, Lorenzo was one of the few to opt for the soft front medium rear tyre combination and made a jump of three places to fourth in the opening corners. Third was to follow quickly and then a promotion to second as front runner Andrea Iannone became one of the first of many to crash out.

Lorenzo tucked in behind race leader Marc Marquez, beginning the Spanish duel that race fans had been waiting for. Never more than half a second apart, it wasn’t until there were just 15 laps remaining thatLorenzo made his move through the uphill section of the circuit for the lead. Three laps later Marquez was back through, passing into turn one.

One lap later and the weather became another rival to face on track as the white flag was waved. With some drops of rain falling riders were now clear to change to wet bikes if wanted. The lead group stayed out and with 9 laps remaining Lorenzo mirrored Marquez’ earlier pass, re-taking the lead into turn one.

A lap later and with the track getting damper in places, Lorenzo slowed and both Marquez and Dani Pedrosa passed in the uphill series of corners. With rain now clearly evident the front three played a dangerous gamble, not wanting to allow the others to get away by pitting. With four laps to go Lorenzo made his move, diving in to change for his wet bike and returning immediately to the track. In the meantime, Pedrosa had crashed out in the start straight, promoting Lorenzo to second.

Race leader Marquez opted not to pit and a lap later also fell victim to the wet, crashing out and leavingLorenzo with a clear run to the finish line and his first victory of the season.

Teammate Rossi had started well from his sixth place grid position and had been making progress when he ran wide in the down hill section, running off track and onto the slippery grass where he crashed heavily. He lost consciousness briefly after the crash but regained it quickly and was taken immediately to the medical centre for a check up. There appears to be no injuries however he has now transferred to hospital for a precautionary check up.

Lorenzo’s superb race craft delivers the maximum 25 points. He remains in fourth position, now just 12 points behind his teammate in third. Rossi’s DNF means he stays on 214 points, now three behind Pedrosa in second.

“It's been a very crazy race, because we won at a track where we’ve never won and we’ve had a lot of problems all weekend. I made a really good start, my first lap was very good and I kept at the wheel of Marc. The bike was working very well and Marc was a little bit slower than in practice so I could stay with him and I passed him one or two times. The problem was it was spitting, so I didn't have much confidence, I was very careful and the others were going away in front. Andrea was catching me and I thought I was going to be fighting for third or fourth position. But finally I had an intuition; every lap I felt the spotting was coming worse and it was very dangerous and easy to crash. When I saw Marc and Dani keeping on racing and without going into the pits in the last corner, I said ok, I will take a risk and enter. I changed the bike, the new tyres were very difficult to warm up, not so much grip but I tried to be very focused and not make many mistakes. When I passed the board on the straight I was in fourth position so I thought we are going to finish very far but then the next lap I was first! I was surprised; I didn't expect to be first. Having this victory is a great relief for me after so many months of challenges and fights so I’m very proud.”

“This was an impressive race, Jorge made no mistakes. He took the right decision at the right moment to change the bike and he chose the right tyre for the dry also at the start of the race. All in all he made a perfect race and took a well-deserved victory. His decisions were very well made. Vale was riding very well up to his crash, it’s a pity because after his out lap he said the changes we made were perfect and he felt the bike was working well. We are not clear yet on the cause of the crash but he was clearly riding with potential to finish on the podium. Fortunately he seems to be fine and has been taken to the hospital as a precautionary check up following an initial check at the medical centre. I need to thank the team who worked hard from Friday where we were struggling to find solutions to bring us to a highly competitive level today.”

“Valentino suffered a concussion with a suspected loss of consciousness. From a neurological point of view he has recovered very well. He was taken to hospital in Alcaniz to make a further check, in particular a CT scan of the skull that has ruled out any bleeding in the brain. As a precaution he will be observed in the coming hours, but there are no special reasons for concern.”
NOTES

The above medical bulletin about Valentino's conditions follows the CT scan the Movistar Yamaha MotoGP rider underwent this afternoon at the Alcaniz hospital. His physical conditions will be checked again by Clinica Mobile later today. Further updates will follow soon.
