AMA Pro Flat Track Spotlights Springfield Mile II 2011 Winner Willie McCoy
With just minutes to go before round 16 of the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season gets the green flag, eventual and first-time winner Willie McCoy gets a handshake from AMA Pro Flat Track scorer Kevin Snyder on September 4, at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. After almost a quarter-of-a-century of trying, the Keller, TX. resident would take his #59 Harley-Davidson of Wausau/Independence H-D/Tucker Rocky/DPC-sponsored H-D XR750 to the win over his long-time and soon-to-be-retired friend Chris Carr by just .012 seconds after a red-flag delay and subsequent 5-lap dash in the National main event at the Springfield Mile II.
One of the long-time competitors in The Rolling Thunder Show, McCoy of late has trimmed down his schedule to run what he considers (as do most) an elite schedule of 5 or 6 events to better fit his
racing commitments and work schedule throughout the year. And needless to say, Springfield being the biggest and pretty close to the best, campaigning both of those rounds is a must for the veteran rider. And after being oh-so-close many times throughout his racing career, September 4, 2011 was the day that he pulled out all of the stops on his XR to take his maiden win in the series.
McCoy will be on-hand this weekend to race round 4 on Sunday May 27 at the oval of awesome, and will be looking to back up last year's win with another on his Harley-Davidson of Wausau-backed mount. As of this writing, the pre-entries have grown since Stu's Shots original preview from a couple of days ago and now set at 46 riders pre-entered in the season-opening Twins Series round at the Springfield Mile I Memorial Day classic.
AMA Pro Flat Track has been doing rider profiles for some time now, and today they picked a most appropriate rider to highlight going into this weekend's doubleheader action in the State Capital of Illinois, National #59 Willie McCoy.
Thanks to AMA Pro Flat Track you can read that interview with WM59 here as you get ready for the opening salvo to the long summer of great racing in the greatest racing series on wheels in the world:
