AMA Flat Track: Jared Mees Leads Sammy Halbert & Jake Johnson Home for 1st Win in Almost 4 Years!
The Springfield Mile never fails to deliver when it comes to intense action and waiting until the end to find out WHO brings it home first. Today's round 6 of the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship Series at the Illinois State Fairgrounds delivered as usual in the battle at the front, and when the the final checkers flew, Jared Mees had taken his #9 Rogers Lake Racing/Blue Springs H-D/Saddlemen/Screamin Eagle XR-750 to the win over Sammy Halbert on his #7 Kings Kustoms/LZ Racing/KK Motorcycle Supply/Nelson Racing XR by a scant .016 seconds, with defending AMA Grand National Champion Jake Johnson on his #1 Zanotti Racing/Schaeffer's H-D/Motion Pro/Arai-sponsored XR just .068 seconds back from Mees.
Johnson can be seen on the podium being interviewed by AMA Flat Track announcer Barry Boone while Mees removes his gloves and Sammy wipes off after 25 laps on the legendary Illinois mile oval. Mees' win was his first since 7/7/07 after a stellar year in 2010 finishing in the 3rd overall position in the championship hunt, and he made a great statement today for running for the championship this year!
After an exciting battle between the top three finishers that also included '09 AMA Pro Singles Champ Brad Baker on the #12 Lloyd Brothers Motorsports Ducati and Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. on the #2 Screamin Eagle Factory H-D, the top three pulled out a slight lead over 4th place finisher Coolbeth and Baker who added to his Rookie of the Year chances bringing it home in 5th.
We will have more throughout the week on the mile as well as the TT that was re-scheduled for tomorrow. You can check out the official results and event results below as well!
